Another great story from Nikita Parmenter.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot and adventure were entertaining. However I would have loved if Sage and her men explored their connection more. The secondary characters were interesting, especially Cole. I'm looking forward to see what adventures they get up to in the next book.

As with all of Parmenter's books, there is a great deal of punctuation errors and grammar mistakes.

I'm not sure why I keep coming back. Maybe it's because, as I mentioned in my Secrets Worth Keeping (Finding Home #2) review, Parmenter has a wonderful imagination and can hook you in with promising plots but almost never execute. It physically pains me and my wallet to pay for promising books (recently just got Kindle Unlimited, yay, me!) but have them flop after the first chapter or two.

Did I mention that I almost DNF'd on multiple occasions? It seems to be a common occurrence with Parmenter. I will (try to) promise I won't willingly put myself through any more of the insta-love insta-lust "relationships-are-all love-and-cuddling-and-fighting-through-your-demons- together-because-everyone-has-fucked-up-dark-pasts-that-make-them-want-to-violent-and-want-to-kill-everyone-they-see" tropes. It's honestly kind of funny, because I use books as such as this as a model of what not to do when writing any sort of Academy RH or Academy romance with dark themes.

Sorry, not all of us who have shitty childhoods become homicidal maniacs. But I digress.

I found a parallel between her Finding Home series, which brings up how the second books of her series are both fillers. The pacing was awful, and while I appreciated that there was *some* development in the plot around midway, it was next to nothing.

I feel like a lot of people who like this book - the ratings are absurdly high, in my opinion, so maybe they're giving pity stars like I am - will hate on me and call me a prude and whatnot.

I don't give a shit.

I'm totally into the RH, I'm into the dark themes, I'm into all the fucked up shit that makes dark romance dark romance and even more so, I love writing about it. I just hate Mary-Sue heroines and insta-love/lust and half-assed attempts at writing and editing what honestly could be a great series. I feel as though Parmenter could be a great author, but she, one, definitely needs to work on the technical side of things, and two, needs to add just more meat to the skeletons of her stories. This involves taking relationships and trust a little slower, even with the use of mate bonds and convenient character ties. If they truly are so fucked up, they won't trust and love that easily, or very easily at all. There will be a lot of tension and angst and characters pulling away from each other to protect themselves from either emotional vulnerability or from past experiences of being burned with abandonment and separation issues.

I just wish that more time is taken to make these novels, this novel especially, meaningful to the series and meaningful as a whole. There's so much potential, again, but it feels like it just washes away by the time you're five to ten chapters in because there's no true, meaningful plot development or twists and turns that come with unlocking parts of a character's past or future.

I once read a quote that was something along the lines of, "If a book fails to change your perception on an issue or the way you think or look at something in some way, it has failed its job as a book." This book, as well as some of Parmenter's other novels, have failed to do this for me, and is the reason why I've rated this in the way I have: one star for effort.

Man, this book and the series has been such a disappointment so far. It has so much potential because the premise is really good and it’s very imaginative, but the author just cannot for the love of God pull it off!

Don’t even get me started on the extreme amount of editing that this book needed. It was deplorable and she should be ashamed of herself with the amount of inconsistencies, grammar errors, typos, plot holes etc., etc., it’s insurmountable.

This felt like a filler book not a whole lot happened. I mean it did, but it didn’t if that makes any sense?!

You get zero answers and only have a ton more questions.

But that’s not the worst to me, the worst is that there is zero relationship progression or attention at all with her and her guys. I mean, she has five fucking boyfriends for God sakes and doesn’t do anything but kiss them. And then all of a sudden out of nowhere, we’re supposed to believe that two completely straight men that have been friends now all of a sudden might have more feelings towards each other ?! Like come on we already don’t get any progression with her and her men now we’re supposed to have to believe that her men are gonna also have feelings for each other!?! This is not a slow burn. This is pretty much a no burn and I’m over it.

P.s. IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE MENTIONED SOMEWHERE THAT THERE WILL BE MM OR MMF! NOT EVERYONE IS OK WITH THAT!

It could have been easily rated 4 stars, but again I caught errors and typos. If the book had been edited and the errors and typos fixed, I would have easily rated this book 4 stars. The book revealed some little clues that are important for the next book and Sage got her powers unlocked and her males supernatural sides unlocked as well. I would have liked to see more practicing/training and knowledge hunting, but I can see that could be in the third book.

I like how the characters are developing and growing.
I will read the next book when it comes out. But the editing needs to be better.

Good series, hard to read

While this series has a great plot and potential with the characters, the run-on sentences, lack of punctuation, and the constant misuse of the word 'whilst' make it very hard to read. There are several areas where things just progress from one point to the next without any show of thought pattern for the characters or any explanation to the readers what exactly is going on. I ended up skipping over several parts because I would have ended up reading the lines over and over trying to figure it out.

I believe this would be a well thought out book if more time and care was put into expanding and exploring several areas so readers do not get lost and can the entire thing.

Better than the first book, i felt like this where the start of an adventure. When Sage started this school, this was the door into a whole new world and i felt that more and more un answered questions just piled up. I hope we will get more answers in the next book. Aaaand i felt that we need more relationship building, not only with her guys but with her new found family. What i liked was that Sage´s new friend Erin already had her own guys. I think i have almost never read a book when the bestie already have her men.

Hit and miss

I am disappointed that the author released this book (and the first book in the series) without having it properly proofread first. There are many spelling/word mistakes. For example- using the word "patients" instead of "patience". And the punctuation, especially commas and apostrophes are lacking or misplaced causing the story to read oddly.
I don't understand why an author would release without this crucial step. I am a voracious reader and grew up reading before ebooks, that is probably why I can easily recognize these errors. I wonder how auto fill and unpolished books will affect the future generation of readers! I am NOT including the difference in American/UK English spelling.
I enjoyed the story. The world is quite complex. There are a LOT of characters which can get a little confusing between Sage and her gang, Erin and her gang, and also Cole. And that is just her close allies "future team". Even though Sage had a rough and abusive past, everything seems to work out easily for her and she just "knows things". Things somehow seem to easily fit into place, be known or work out perfectly which detracts from the story a bit.
I don't know if I will read the next book or not. If it was released already, then yes. But after waiting (which I do understand), I don't know if I will realize book is released or want to bother dealing with unpolished book that is presented as finished.
I am not usually super critical about books and will rate a book 5 stars if I enjoyed it. I read a lot and don't expect "my absolute ideal read" from every book to rate it 5 stars.

Has potential

The first and second book of this trilogy were hard to read. It had a great plot and storyline potential, but all of the holes, confusion, editing, and grammatical errors make it frustrating to read.

1. The guys tell her at the beginning of book one that there are supernaturals, then at the end she's told there are supes and her and the guys are surprised by this.

There's so many more instances, like her parents, everything with the director that was so obvious I wanted to cry that everyone was so damn surprised when she went all nuts.

Then the whole thing with the tattoos and the soul mates not being really human but there's a lot of back and forth. I hope the series gets an overhaul, I don't think I can push myself to read the third book.

1. The reviews state it left a lot unanswered and was hard to read with the editing and grammatical errors

2. The author's Instagram showed she's NOT done with the series and is making it like a "TV show" and purposely left things unanswered for her to come back to (then why is it a TRILOGY??) That doesn't make sense.

With so many characters and adding more and more warrior friends, it's hard to keep track of everyone. I think there needs to be some sort of glossary in the beginning since there's like 12 to keep track of, not including Nicole and her men or Cole's future mates. And now they're heading to the demon realm to add more people and drama.

So NOT worth my time.. 2 stars just cause the idea of the story is awesome! But such a disappointment for a book that has so much potential..Love the idea of the story but it has such a poor execution... And I have to mention the very ugly grammar.. Hell, my English is a second language I speak, and I believe I write better then that!! The characters are without depth.. with no history and no growth (not counting the supernatural power growth).. they all seem kinda dumb with constant dumb chatter that doesn't tell us anything.. There are bunch of questions all the time, but unfortunately there never are answers for anything. It is annoying cause you read to solve the mystery, to find out at least some of the details that enrich the story, not to be left with just more questions and continously read more filler pages..
Anyways, I read a review for the third book of this series and apparently there will be no answers even in the end.. Thank you for that awesomely bad review *Tanvi*, cause that made the decision not to read the last book, very easy.. there are plenty other books that are worth my time.

Book2 was still pretty good

This book had more editing issues than book 1. It didn't make it unreadable but it was irritating at times for me. None vs non. Stuff like that. Very minor but for someone that catches errors like that, annoying. The storyline is interesting. The dialogue for the most part is believable and the progression is good. My biggest gripe is that they can't/don't talk to anyone. I get that they are supposed to be careful about who they trust but they are taking lessons which someone that is potentially trustworthy and don't say anything? The forced suspense tends to get to me. It can be a powerful writing tool but no answers is just annoying. Book 2 is nothing but open ended questions with little to no direction. If the series continues like this, I will probably stop reading.

While the story is still interesting enough, there were a lot more grammatical issues and pacing issues. I think more time should have been taken to develop a story instead rushing through it to get plot points. I like the idea of the story a lot. I think it has really good bones but it jumps to get stuff done. They were at the academy for a few days before they left again and I think that they should have been there a little longer to develop out the world a bit more. I will continue the series because I think the story is interesting but I am having a harder time with them not being fleshed out.

There is so much happening....
Training school? ✔️
Supernaturals? ✔️
New friends?✔️
New enemies? ✔️
Godess drama? ✔️
Suspicion towards everyone? ✔️
Universe lore? ✔️
Girl drama? ✔️
New tattoos? ✔️
Attacks?✔️
Harry Potter-vibes?✔️
Other realms? ✔️

Trying to get the time to give us this universe’s lore, school history, history of supernatural wars, learn about several different supernatural types, learning new powers, trying to remember who’s what amongst the 10+ people, so many new people introduced, so many people acting suspicius, lots of visions, school classes, relationship building (or really lack there of?!).

It’s just really a lot going on here and I miss Sage and her guys just having some time to explore their relationship and get to know them all better...

😱 why??

Let me start this review off with a simple statement: this is a very good story. That said, I only got to 50% done. Why? Because the editing, spelling, grammar, everything was so bad that I could not read it. I started highlighting typos, incorrect words, homonyms, etc at page 2. By the time I hit 35% complete on my Kindle I had over a hundred highlights. There was at least one on every page and often more than three. With a patient and thorough editor, this would be a five-star book. As it stands, I fought with myself to give it to Stars because I have never not finished a book. See what I did there in the previous sentence? That's exactly how it felt on every page.

great second

I enjoyed this 2nd book. It has a completely dif concept from the first one. The first one was an introduction of the main characters. How shy and introverted she was, and the new guys arriving at her school. They are like magnets. This book has them going to a different academy for paranormal and soulmate bond groups, training to be an enforcer for their world. It ends in question since the headmaster was a double agent for the order and they don’t know if they’re being trained for the order or to be an enforcer to the paranormal world. They have a brush with the headmasters murderer, and she gains a new familiar. I’m so glad she was able to save Ghost. Can’t wait to read about their new start at a New Academy.

drawn out plot

The plot is promising but there is a lot of “I’m too overwhelmed, I can’t ask questions now. We’ll deal with it later”. Like for everything. The author is using that to lengthen the books and it was annoying once (who doesn’t want the very important information to be told to them now?), but it happens about 35 times. It’s clear they need to know this info, they say they need to know this info, and then bam “I am tired, we will deal with it later”, or “what is that strange yet wildly important development? Whatever, I’m tired and will forget about it until it bites us in the butt”. That is allllll over the place. And so are exclamation points? Why is every dialogue have one? It was jarring to read. Are these characters dumb? Flakey? Absolutely useless?

Honestly the first book was good and light hearted with an interesting plot. But unfortunately the second one was tasteless.
The connection between her and her guys is not developed at all and there is no intimacy as ERIN IS ALWAYS HERE. I am sorry i love best friends and new relations in books but is it a book about Erin and Sage ? (Spoilers: « Erin have the rarest powers » « OMG another rare power she has this is extremely incredible ») giiirlI want to read about the MC just to do the book about Erin in this case.

I give two stars because the plot can be good if it’s well use it’s a good idea but not well done, maybe too fast in the development of the supernatural world. It can be good for a quick read or for an early teenager.

Okay, after rereading the first book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect this time round. Thankfully, once away from the setting of the first book, this really improves. This is set a bit before the events of the Black Onyx Academy (BOA) series, and now that we're in the paranormal world the action and tension really ramps up as the Bonded group now has to come to grips with the massive change having Sage's gifts unbound has released on not only the group, but their new friend (Erin and her bonded). And just like at BOA, something isn't right at the academy. Had a great time reading this and I feel better about continuing on to the 3rd book now that we are firmly in a paranormal setting.

Need more

Sage and her guys are back and heading to the Academy. Finally they get to unlock her powers that are bound and the guys get their supernaturals. And WOW was not expecting everything that went along with that, so glad they have the support of Erin and her guys!!

Something is definitely going on with this Academy, not everything is as it seems. With starting classes, goddesses, the Order, trying not to be killed and learning all the secrets that surround the place. They can’t catch a break. I am loving the multiple POV. I won’t post spoilers..... but read this book!

Disappointed to have lost two stars

The storyline for this book is AMAZING. Characters are ones I can fall in love with. But... on multiple occasions I found myself re-reading something I’d read either in the previous book or a couple chapters before and the characters acted like it was brand new information. I’m not sure if the author forgot she wrote it but it was concerning. And there was a lot of grammatical errors and typos. I wanted so badly to love this book but the issues made it so hard to not hate it. I think with some editing and some changes it could be an amazing book.

so whilst is an English thing?

So. Much. Whilst. Lol

Is learnt an English thing too? Just asking…

Also, the word ‘jet’ came up a bunch (jet plane, jets of water, etc) and every single one of them was capitalized.

Lots of continuity errors too.

Great bones, could use better flesh.

Side note, I didn’t mention this in my first review but kinda odd that the big bad in the first book was not only taken care of VERY VERY easily but that we got like two sentences telling us about it and no real confirmation- just Sage’s assumption of what happened.

Still gonna read the next though.

Necessary continuation

Again, this second volume is totally marred by spelling and punctuation errors. The characters also seem to shrink in age and maturity. Book one had some redeeming episodes of angst and personal growth, whole this had a regression. Our heroes are in an academy fraught with danger. They meet new allies and enemies. They discover their supernatural sides and dabble lightly in new powers. Anything new they learn is shrouded in confusion and mystery which is equally frustrating to the reader. The back bone premise of the series remains good, but the poor writing deters from its value.

So book 2 takes a turn to an academy story - Sage and her guys are on their way to an academy. But of course there are some definite bumps in the road. I liked the overall story, but I also felt like there were way too many characters to keep straight. Between Sage’s harem, Erin’s harem and a couple others at the school, it kind of got confusing at times. It was also hard, because the turn towards an academy storyline, made it almost feel like this was book 1 in a new series, versus book 2. I may pick up book 3, because I like Sage and Erin and want to see what happens.

Hmmmm

This book has severe editing issues. Pretty much every page was full of grammatical errors, wrong pronouns, wrong word, beginning of sentences not capitalized...lots of mistakes. The story itself was good. We're all waiting to see how everyone's powers grow. Still a slow burn. Nothing much beside light make out sessions. Apparently two of the males are going to form a relationship. Not happy about this! I wish this was revealed in the first book because I would not have started the series. Just not my cup of tea.

Three and a half stars

This rating is not based on the story itself, but on my feelings about it.

I enjoyed the first book in the series, with the memory loss, the fight club, the bonded mates and all that.

But in this book we've gone high fantasy and turned into something like a PG13 rated (references to sex, some nudity, but no actual sex) reverse harem Harry Potter type series - witches, demons, fae etc.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I think for many readers it will rock. It's just not my thing.

The Lost One’s Books keep getting better and better!

I began reading the Ever series and then went to Jinx’s series, but since I loved the writing style of Nikita Paramenter so much I gave this series a shot as well and so far I have not been disappointed. This author is truly gifted at drawing the reader in and not only keeping them engaged, but making them enthralled and addicted to the stories! She cannot write them fast enough for me and I hope all the series continue for a LONG time because I do not want to go through withdraw from my favorite heroines and their men!

Every conversation ends with an exclamation!

We get the point! But can you settle on either a book for middle schoolers! Or adults! The wish-washy back and forth if exhausting! And not every sentence should end in an exclamation! I’d hate to text with you! Oh! And people! Even though the author writes the story in the USA, she doesn’t speak American English! So warning! Also! There wasn’t any proofreading done on the final copy! So expect grammatical errors!

(Do you get the point? If the review was irritating then the book will be too.)
