Kiritani isn’t as busty or bulky as the other students at Hanamaru Academy, but that doesn’t mean Class 2-A’s rep is lazing around all day. First, there’s the return of an absent student to attend to, then a sports day bulging with plenty of muscle, and finally, a trip to Kyoto…including some steamy onsen shenanigans!
This series is just so cute! It doesn’t take itself too seriously, the stories are adorable and all about boys trying to fit in in an environment where it’s most important to be cute and charming. I enjoyed it!
There’s less fan service in this one, imo, which I appreciated. How ever, Kiritani’s friendship with Harumin isn’t as present in this volume as the first, which I missed. The stories I enjoy the most are the unlikely friendships between the students.
This really is just so kooky and delightful~ I have so much fun and reading this brings a smile to my face. It just hits such a great note of being silly and cute~
Just like the first, I loved this volume. It's over the top with how ridiculous it is, but it's a lighthearted comedy. Apparently Hanamaru Academy isn't the only school that wears skirts. It seems like it's possibly just a thing in this world. The characters continue to develop with the class representative being uptight compared to all of the others. I found it funny how accurate the representations of girls in skirts were, just with guys. Like sacrificing comfort for beauty, or holding the back of your skirt down when it's windy or when you go upstairs. Loved it!
So continues to the exploits of the boys of Reiwa Hanamaru Academy. For readers who made it to the second volume, there will be few new or surprising discoveries upon tracking the boys during a fieldtrip to a regional onsen, during seasonal sports events, or celebrating the holidays. THIGH HIGH #2 is cute and fun but is content to rest in the wake of every schoolyard comedy that came before it.
THIGH HIGH #2 expands its purview, if only slightly. Readers are no longer glimpsing school life over the shoulder of the comically irritable Kiritani, the class rep, but are more comfortably questing from adventure to adventure, without a care in the world. If not for the muscular boys in pretty outfits, one understands this manga wouldn't be worth the effort. However, since the creative team went ahead and drew the delightful Yumekawa, the too-sweet wrestling aficionado, in a dainty maid outfit with a heart-inset thigh garter, perhaps readers will let the manga's lacking originality slide.
Is it any surprise that Class 2-A gets a transfer student, Amayama, who is monstrously muscular after training in the mountains? Not really. But Amayama adapts quickly; when the other boys show him the value of kindness and humility in the face of recklessness, the boy blushes and learns to enjoy himself ("M-me...? I look c-cute?"). Or what about the group's chubby classmate, Kanda, who admires his athletic peers so much, he tries to forcibly change his body type? It's up to Harumi, Kiritani, and Yumekawa to convince their friend that human shape is the best shape (Yumekawa: "You're fine the way you are. It's cute how happy you look when you eat."). The manga's over-the-top emphasis on body positivity is not without its more grounded applications.
The manga remains lighthearted and absent any real challenges to the boys' exuberance. They might encounter a few attempts at bullying, but altogether, it's the usual high-school fluff. The only truly missing facet of genre storytelling rests in the fact that the comic, regrettably, has zero actual romantic relationships. Elsewhere, THIGH HIGH #2 risks expanding its cast a bit too large. It's difficult to keep track of who is who: the manga has more than a dozen recurring characters. Further, some characters are addressed by both their surname and their given name, depending on who they're in conversation with. For example, Mahiro Taki, the dark-haired pretty boy, is addressed to formally as "Taki-san" and more casually as "Mahiro-chan" in consecutive panels. It's a bit confusing.
At least readers earn the chance to encounter the core cast in a setting beyond the classroom. A short, winter holiday party sees the characters in casual, everyday clothing. Plaid skirts and hairpins are cute, but frayed shorts, oversized sweatshirts, and dark dresses paired with fishnet stockings? Truly, this is the glory of the boys of Reiwa Hamanaru Academy.
I actually finished this weeks ago but didn’t have the spoons to write a review.
I still am not entirely certain the intend behind this, but I’ve decided I don’t care. I enjoy it, and I felt like the second volume was better than the first. It felt less like a gag and more like it was… well I don’t really want to say “serious,” but I’m not sure how to put it.
In this volume we see that it’s not just this school that has this genderbend situation; apparently it’s true for the entire city (maybe world?) in which the story takes place. It isn’t clear if the genderbending goes both ways, though.
Still, it feels kind of validating to see the lines of femininity and masculinity blur to some extent. And to finally be able to enjoy a lot of the tropes of HS manga/romance manga that are ALWAYS skewed toward men who are attracted to women.
I think I enjoyed this partly bc it seemed as if it was saying “yes, I’m a comedy manga, but I’m not a *gag* manga.” To me, at least. It’s silly, ofc, but at the same time it takes itself seriously to a certain extent.
I can understand why some people (especially transgender people) might not like this manga, but I have enjoyed it as a nice break from other, heavier stuff, and I’ll likely be trading other volumes (if there are any).
The first volume was cute and I really didn’t intend to continue the series but I already had bought the first two volumes. This really isn’t great. Just like the first volume, there is no plot. There is no introduction of characters. It is just little stories that do not relate to one another. They very quickly become annoying and repetitive. It has potential to be hilarious and great as a weird take on high school life but with the lack of a plot moving the books along it just falls flat.
Honestly not super interested in this series. I was going to try to at least finish this volume since I bought it, but nah. It's not like it's bad and it's pretty quick to get through, but I really don't care about anything that's happening so I'm better of spending my time reading other things.
Still fun and light hearted, so if someone is wanting to look for something with great depth, this wouldn’t be for them, but this volume does have more character history and has started to develop some of the characters.
this is really cutee. love the concept of this manga. For those who kinda boring or didn't like it vol 1, you guys should read this volume ASAP. I promised it's getting better. can't wait for vol 3 😭.
This had more of an overarching story than the first book in the series. The characters were just as charming as in the beginning. It was fun to see more of the outside world this author created. The jokes fell flat and did well about the same as the first book.
Not near as great as the first. The time line jumps.. quickly and it’s become less slice of life more quick scenes. The increase fan service was a gag though! Fight scene where all it takes is a guest of wind to end your opponent is just silly fun no matter how you look at it!
Idk I like this one better than the first book. Maybe it's because we're actually getting more character development is not just fan service the entire way to introduce characters
If volume 1 of Thigh High was a small, slim, cute and spunky little freckled high schooler in his plaid school uniform skirt, sweater vest and adorable little necktie, then volume 2 is a beefy, thick-thighed jock boy who works after school as a maid in a frilly pink dress, adding a touch of sex-appeal with a leather garter and heart-shaped metal fastener.
We return to Reiwa Hanamaru Academy as frumpy, hapless class rep Kiritani is asked to welcome a new student, Amayama, a monolithic, scarred and wild-haired slab of muscle whose family practices combat sports deep in the mountains. Challenged to a duel by the new student, sports hunks Yumekawa and Kitahara (pictured below on the left and right ends, wrestling club and baseball respectively) meet Amayama’s challenge… through thumb and arm wrestling. However, it isn’t until Yumekawa puts a celebratory scrunchie on his new classmate to tie his hair up that he defeats Amayama with the ultimate weapon… CUTENESS.
