It’s just Ted’s luck that he meets the love of his life while covered in the blood of a murder victim.
Funeral worker Ted Sturm has a foul mouth, a big heart, and a knack for communicating with the dead. Unfortunately the dead don’t make very good friends, and Ted’s only living pal, his roommate, just rescued a strange cat who’s determined to make his life even more miserable. This cat is more than he seems, and soon Ted finds himself in an alternate dimension… and on top of a dead body.
When Ted is accused of murder, his only ally in a strange world full of powerful magical beings calling for his head is King Grell, a sarcastic, randy, catlike immortal with impressive abilities… and anatomy. The two soon find themselves at the center of a cosmic conspiracy and surrounded by dangerous enemies. But with Ted’s special skills and Grell’s magic, they have a chance to get to the bottom of the mystery and save Ted. There’s just one Ted’s got to resist Grell’s aggressive advances… and he isn’t sure he wants to.
I don't enjoy this as much as book 1. Despite the same world building, I got overwhelmed with the new information of the different worlds. The reason why Ted was caught for a murder that he didn't commit and need to prove his own innocent also doesn't make sense. I also don't get his chemistry with the cat King with 2 dicks. The King is all kind of flirty like Loch in previous book, but he isn't that endearing to me. However, since book 3 will be of Sloane and Loch, I'll definitely be reading it.
If you're here for the titular Kraken you (like me) will be sorely disappointed. There is not a kraken, squid, or octopus to be found in this book so the title really misses the mark. While Grell and Ted are new to the series, and this technically could work as a standalone, it really should be read after Acsquidentally in Love.
The first in the series was a lot of fun, had good action and a self-contained storyline and I adored Sloane and Toth/Loch. This one had the banter, the interspecies insta-love and even a god with two dicks, but the mystery, IMO, was convoluted and lots of threads were left hanging (I now see book three will go back to Sloane and Loch and seemingly pick up where this left off so in addition to the overarching story, perhaps the mystery of the missing bones and Ted's past may still be fleshed out, but no mention whether Ted and Grell will play a part). There just seemed to be a lot of extraneous information that could have been dropped to make the actual mystery a bit more streamlined.
I didn't feel the love connection between Ted and Grell and at times the banter was just annoying. There were some nice moments between the two but I didn't feel enough of the emotion between them. I did enjoy Ted's connection to his ghostly little friend, and would have liked to see that story resolved better.
I'll pick up the next book since it's back to Sloane and Loch, and hope for a better resolution, but this installment just didn't work that well for me.
Not gonna lie, it took me forever to read this one.
Spoilers ahead
I was actually shocked that this book did not feature the couple from the first book, since it is a mystery series and the star killer is a PI. Also no krakens were used in the telling of this story.
Anyways...
Ok so in here we have Ted. Ted lives a lonely life while he works at a funeral home. He also sees dead people. His roommate adopted a cat who hates him and one day kicks him into a portal, sending Ted into the not a real cats home world. In here we have earth, then the plane of existence ruled by a king with a bridge, then the god world were the gods are sleeping. This is all related to the previous god mcs world of slumber.
Ted lands on top of a dead body and going by the laws of the land, is charged with murder. He then meets King Kitty, who is sexual innuendo personified.
King Kitty has two wingdingers and we are teased with a dp that doesn't happen until 91% of the book is gone.
These two would rather have lots of sexytimes than work on the murder case but it all works out in the end.
I'm gonna be honest again, I did not like either mc. Ted literally said the word f*ck over 320 times. I'm not exaggerating. King Kitty had no depth, maybe if this had dual pov it would have been better.
I did really love the world building and Kunst and Graham. I will reread this one when it comes to audio just to hear the kitties, fish people, and zombie horses talk.
“Oh, Tedward. If a mouse farts in here, I’m going to come because right now, your stuffed little ass is the most fantastic thing I’ve ever felt.”
Yes, y'all...his name is TEDWARD 🤭 hoa hoa hoa.
Ted kicks a cat (accidentally) and ends up falling into an alien world where he's accused of murder. He teams up with the kitty king to find the real killer and clear his name. Their adventure solving the case was fun..Cute n silly romance. I loved their bickering, but dang, Ted said "fuck" and "fucking" wayy too much. The overall plot is entertaining. Who is trying to wake the gods and why?? Things are slowly tying in from book 1. (You should read that one first) I'm excited the next one has more Sloane and Loch. They're getting married 😍
I honestly only finished this because I plan to continue with the series and didn’t want to miss any of the overarching plot for the series. When one MC has two dicks and there’s the promise of DP on the horizon and you’re just very blasé about it, it’s not a good sign.
I didn’t care for either character. I found them both a bit abrasive and a lot obnoxious. Not to mention, every other word out of Ted’s mouth seems to be “fuck” or some variation (used 320+ times in the book, or 1.5x/page). I don’t mind swearing, but this was excessive and just didn’t add anything to the story or the character.
The plot didn’t make a whole lot of sense. There didn’t seem to be any sense of urgency to the whole thing, since they constantly had time for multiple sex sessions… guess no one’s too worried about that murder trial and all the dead bodies piling up.
Where this mostly took place in an alternate dimension and not in the human world, I feel like the world building got a bit much in this one. Do I need to know what all these weird creatures are, if they are just showing up once and never again?!
Funny hot and romantic. What more you want? Tentacles?... Yeah I wanted those too... LOL
I thought this book would be about tentacles too (just as the first), but instead I got a cat shifter king with two dicks. Umm. Okay, that works as tentacle too, hmm...
I'm not complaining because I enjoyed the hell out of the story, but when you want tentacles and got two dicks instead... LOL okay I just shut up.
The writing style and the characters are hilarious, I laughed many times. Ted and Grell are just so funny. I mean Ted is funny on his own too, but Grell, a king? He so is not what you imagine as a king. And I loved him for that. Grell was the most hilarious thing ever and the way he spoke, OMG it cracked me up.
The mystery part of the story was a bit lost for me, it wasn't as interesting as other aspects of the story, but I still enjoyed the whole story.
So not standalone. Cat creature with tentacles this time around. Grell was a lot more clued in than Az. Teasing about Jay but plenty of sex, brush off murder mystery and the return of the pain in the butt Sloane sacrificed. I did prefer this one to the first, mainly because of the ghosts. Would read the next one.

I cannot even begin to describe what goes on in this book! This author has an amazingly filthy & bizarre imagination & I adore them for it!
The characters are loveable, goofy & seriously sexy - I mean if one penis is good, two HAS to be better so why NOT put them both on one MC to have double the pleasure. I was not sure what to expect from the actual story but it didn't go anywhere I thought it would but I was super focused on the main couple anyway. Ted and Grell were sweet together but I am very excited to get back to Loch and Sloane again in the next book!
After I read the first book in this series, I was plenty excited for more. Here in the second story in the series, I was expecting (and hoping) for something similar to book one but didn’t quite find that. This time, the story is set in the same world but King Grell is actually a cat-like being, albeit with some tentacle features—though those don’t play into the intimate scenes between him and Ted—so I’m not quite sure where the “Kraken” in the title comes from.
Ted is a mostly average guy with a penchant for dropping f-bombs quite a bit (to me, overly so). His not-so-average talent of seeing and interacting with ghosts though makes for a definitely more unique life than everyone else. Grell is a slightly obnoxious king who has conveniently varied magical powers, and has an overly healthy libido.
The circumstances of the accusations against Ted may border on the ridiculous, but they are the catalyst for the rest of the events in the story. Sometimes things verged on corniness, but there was a mystery to solve and a convoluted path to find the perpetrators. I’ll admit I didn’t figure it out until the reveal at the end, and I usually can guess correctly beforehand.
As for those intimate scenes? You’ll definitely find the heat level set to high, and while tentacles aren’t part of that equation that doesn’t mean there aren’t other interesting parts involved ;-)
Kraken My Heart was a 3.5-star read for me, and while it was different from what I expected it was still a good read and furthered themes from the first book regarding the old gods, something I hope continues as the series goes on. This book is meant for readers 18+ for Ted’s potty mouth and sexual content.
The sophomore effort for KLH's Sucker for Love Mysteries series wasn't all it was "Kraken'ed" out to be. Sorry, for both the pun and the disappointment of the book. This book definitely feels unfinished. The book follows Ted (Tedward, yes really) Strum, a follower of Lucien, who works for a funeral home, transporting the dead. What little magic Ted does have is the ability to speak with ghosts, something he finds both disturbing and troublesome. Ted has a roommate he gets along with and not much else, and when he's knocked through a portal to Xenon by the hateful "cat" his roommate adopted he finds himself accused of murder of the dead guy he's fallen on top of when he pops out the other end of the portal. Enter King Thiazi Grell desu Etcetera, the very large shape shifting cat monster king of Xenon who declares himself to be Ted's council for his murder trial, and he also has an eye for squishy human flesh and starts flirting immediately. The two pair up to figure out who really killed Sergen Mire, the corpse Ted fell on, and in the process uncover a bigger plot to possibly cause war between Xenon and Zebulon? The mystery is never resolved. Instead, the mystery grows exponentially when we learn that Ted has already died, and has been brought back to life. By who and to what end? No answers are forth coming in this volume, and while Ted does eventually get his murder trial, there are still so many unanswered questions about the murders and the surrounding plot it makes the entire book feel only half done. As for characters, I adore King Grell, and his sassy flirting. Not so much a fan of Tedward , who's favorite, noun, verb, and adjective is "F*ck," and uses it in practically every sentence he utters. Prepare for it's abundance.
I'm not sure what I just read. I was so excited about this book because I loved the first one in the series and this one was ... no idea what it was. There was no real connection to the first book except a couple of references at the end and I did not get the murder mysteries ... or the entire plot to be honest. The smex was scorching hot but I was waiting for the things to make some sense which they never did. I'm still confused about what was the point and the mystery of the missing bones was never resolved...
There is no kraken. I don't mind, really, but it is a weird pun to use in a title, then. I sort-of-liked this book but not much more. It's ridiculous and OTT but not quite funny enough to be the great and absurd journey I think it's supposed to be.
The book started out strong introducing Ted, and it's still pretty interesting when he stumbles through a portal into a new world. But the story went very much in different direction I was anticipating, which in itself isn't completely a bad thing. Ted's story is curious but it's not even wrapped up in this book. The murder mystery and a rather large glimpse into the other world were partly interesting but a bit hard to follow. Maybe a bit too much info for such a short story.
The lecherous cat king was quite fun, the ghostly sidekicks were pretty great actually, and the silly murder mystery was kind of fine. But I was still bored here and there, many jokes didn't really land and the language was just a tad too crude. I liked the idea of Ted being a bit rough and Grell's dirty jokes but they were still a bit too much sometimes. And while I appreciate bickering, Ted going on "F-U" every other second didn't feel necessary.
Some great ideas here and I did like bunch of it, but I'm feeling this could have been much better.
Another excellent book in the series. A brand new set of characters are introduced with new magics and new locations with fantastical beings.
Ted, your everyday funeral employee, collects the deceased from wherever they may be. When the dead start talking, however, it makes things a tad uncomfortable, except for this sweet boy ghost who's attached himself to Ted, When his roommate's cat transforms and pushes him through a portal, Ted's immediately charged with murder, but thankfully Grell, the king, takes his case. Ted and Grell must work together to solve the mystery, all the while Ted unsuccessfully fights off Grell's advances, not that he minds too much. It's kind of nice having all that attention and some interesting bits of Grell's anatomy paying attention to him, right?
Laugh out loud humor, sexy fun times, and a mystery to boot. All wrapped up with a touching HFN which we all know leads to HEA for this human and his King.
I worried for nothing, thinking that I wouldn't like this as much as it's about another couple. I loved it. Ted and Grell were so fun. They teased each other constantly but could also have moments of levity. Set almost entirely in Xenon, it couples rich world building with a mystery. I think it's necessary to have read book 1 first for the background on the old gods and Sage's etc. There's a few plot threads that need picked up but I assume those are for future books
Loved how book 1 opened the way to book 2. Warning: Don’t ever kick a cat, even accidentally! They can open portals to drop you into another dimension. Again crazy fun read with Ted and Grell.,these two never stop arguing. It’s a definite love hate relationship
A lot less tentacles in this one, no complaints here, and just as interesting. I love that this makes the lore of a racist and bigot into lgbt stories.
I am so in love with this series, that I really hope there are going to be a few more coming. I have a feeling I know who’s going to be next, but then again I could be wrong. I also loved seeing some ‘old friends’ pop up in this story. I was very happy they were included and looking like it will be a long time thing. They were a pain in the butt but in the end, they made all the difference. I truly felt for Ted in this book. Being terrified to make changes in your life and not knowing why, but being miserable by the way his life is. Not to mention his ‘talent’ or curse, if you want to call it that. But what hurt me the most about him, is he really had no clue as to why part of his life was the way it was. Until he got a nasty wake up call from what he assumed was a cat. How wrong again he was. Now he’s in another dimension and his world has turned upside down. In more ways than one. He finds an unusual attraction to the King. And when you find out about him, you’ll know why it’s unusual. He’s also being framed for murder. And he finally finds out the truth about what happened to him, but doesn’t know who or how it was fixed. So I don’t blame him for being gun shy or even being foulmouthed and snarky. It was his defense. Everyone expected him to be a certain way, when he really wanted the complete opposite. But I have to admit, it was funny as heck when he met Grell. Oh. My. Word. Ted more than met his match with this snarky, frustrating King, who loves to answer questions with questions or not answer them at all. Because he’s the King and can do what he wants. LOL. But. He is a good one for Ted. Not only does he keep him on his toes, he makes him come out of that shell of his. He sees Ted for Ted. What his real dreams and desires are. And Ted is just as good for Grell. Grell hasn’t been happy for many, many years due to certain circumstances and now is stuck going through more horrors as time goes on. Horrors that hit waaaay below the belt, and is like a knife to the heart. But Ted being the caring man he really is, shows Grell things will hopefully get better. And if they don’t, Ted will be by his side to get him through. At least for now. But Ted is about to be in for another surprise he doesn’t know of yet. And the fur, pun intended, is about to fly. This is a really good series. It is one that is worth reading over again, just for the fun of it. I can’t wait to see if who I think is next and where the plot is going to lead. Because with the way book 1 was trying to turn out and now book 2, I think the world may be in for a rude awakening the way it’s going. And I’m going to love every minute.
Ted can see ghosts, which mostly complicates his job working with dead bodies. Plus, his roommate’s cat wants him dead, and is prepared to take steps to make that happen...wherever you think this story is going from here, trust me, you’re wrong, and you’re going to be so, so happy about it. I did not see any of this story coming, and that just made it more delightful. I’m not sure how this book manages to balance some fairly somber subject material-- portals to mysterious alternate dimensions, a kingdom with a truly bizarre system of determining murder suspects (see also, wrongful murder accusations), and a theologically based conspiracy with the potential for disasters of apocalyptic proportions-- with some absolutely light hearted, almost whimsical romance, and a fair amount of steam as well, but it absolutely does. Grell is too much in all the best ways, and he’s exactly the right love interest for Ted, as only a gloriously irreverent, cat-species shapeshifting ruler of a kingdom steeped in multiple cultures and built, literally, on the bones of those who came before, can be. There’s adventure. And sarcasm. And some side quests of various natures. Plus, some ghostly sidekicks who bring humor and/or sweetness all their own. I highly recommend this book, and, if you haven’t already, definitely read the previous book in the series for some background and context on a larger plot that’s clearly ongoing, and just because it too is awesome. I can’t wait to see where the series goes next.
*An ARC of this book was provided by the author and I have chosen to publish a fair & honest review.*
I am love this series!! Kraken My Heart is the second book in this paranormal series, this time is Ted and Grell story, this two were great together!!! So much bickering , these two were hilarious!
Ted is really a good guy, he has a peculiar ability, he can see ghosts. Because of his roommate’s cat he is transported to another dimension and to his bad luck he is frame of murder. He meets king Grell here and he is going to help him to discover the real killer . Grell is hilarious, he is a good king and it’s smitten with Ted and he really wants to help him and he is a flirt too, these two have a great banter going on! I have a great time watching these two together.
This book has so many great characters and a world building, mysteries and hot sexy scenes, I have a great time reading this book! I love paranormal romance and I can’t wait for more!
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
I am loving this series. Ted and Grell were just delightful together. The sheer amount of bickering they do at each other is hilarious. Their chemistry is off the charts.
We get plenty of world building in this book and it’s highly interesting. Lots of characters to get to know. Ted was wonderful and oddly accepting of being thrust in a situation he had no control over. I certainly don’t want to give anything away, but there are definitely a few surprises for Ted along the way. Grell is hilariously honest and there isn’t a darn thing I didn’t like about him. They were so fun together.
This book has so many things to appreciate: lush world building, quirky and likable characters, suspense, love, sexiness and even a few tugs on your heartstrings. Another home run for me and I especially enjoyed the little Ghost reference hidden inside.
→ King and Prisoner → Stolen bones → Forced Proximity & Age Gap
Okay so imagine being dropped into the middle of nowhere in a puddle of red goo because you accidentally kicked the cat across the living room. Also, there are these monsters accusing you of murdering said goo. Ummmm WHAT. Hehe also there’s more sex with gods, I’m ALWAYS here for that. Are you confused yet? Cause you should be.
I honestly felt bad for Ted, cause he did nothing but WORK and apparently kick the cat too much. He’s intelligent, compassionate, and stands up for himself.
King Grell is just as a cat would be if they could talk, most of the time it’s pleasant but sometimes you just wanna stuff a sock in it.
K.L. has a way of scratching the itch in your brain for just the right mix of squishy and wonderful angst. Run, don’t walk to go read this series!
I can't believe I haven't left a review yet! While I am a sucker (haha) for tentacles, it was incredible to see a different sort of couple in this world - and really, a different sort of world entirely. If you read and love the first book as I do, then this is a very cool change of pace where you get to see some of the other planes of existence and understand these godlike races a little better. You also get to meet an entirely new couple to root for, while trying to solve both a semi-hilarious mystery, and a second much more tragic one. It all still ties in so well with things we were teased in book 1, but this is its own standalone for those who haven't read the first book yet, and as funny, sexy, and intriguing as all Hiers's work. I cannot wait for the next installment!
This was fantastic!! I loved Ted and Grell, they were quirky and easy to like. Their banter and bickering was hilarious and made the story a fun read! Poor Ted is thrust into a world he has no control over and King Grell was smitten with him and just wanted to help. The world building is sooo good. I cannot wait for the next one. I’m voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received.
