It was painful to finish this book. After an interesting and powerful beginning, the middle started to muddle, the last third was painfully poorly written. Everyone says things *softly" or "matter of fact" n this book. I guess this author thinks his writing is so charming, he feels he should use the same adverbs and adjectives repeatedly. Skipped several chapters towards the end , desperate to finish.
Such an entertaining journey! I laughed, then cried then laughed…it was an emotional roller coaster, but I love a novel to get me in my feelings…This one did! For me, there’s nothing like a good historical romance and Mr. Thomas, with this novel, has really outdone himself. Such realistic characters! You may have to put it down and get it together before picking it back up but when it’s all said and done, you’ll be glad you read it! Well done, Mr. Thomas!
The is an amazing story that covers a large part of American and African history. While this family had a awful start being stolen from Africa, then transported by slavers via ship to American and being sold into slavery, they were some of the lucky ones. Their life in slavery was fairly pleasant and they always seemed to find kindness along the way. All of the characters had so much courage and love for all. Great story
This was a fantastic read. It boggles my mind it's so well written. Taking me though the horrors of slavery, torture, hangings and into the best love stories. Births and deaths and the intermingling of races because of true love and the blessed children we fall in love with.
A truly wonderful book to be thankful I discovered. I wish it didn't end but thank the good Lord we have come out of the dark ages and into the bright light.
This book was an unexpected pleasant surprise the is so well written. Timothy story shows how we can overcome anything. Love it and would not out it down as I go so invested in Timothy life.
Had a very tough time trying to get the house chores finished !
I really enjoyed the flow of the story from the mother down to the younger children and how it changes as time passes. I would say that it will change the reader also.
Amazing book filled with events and emotions. Hated for it to end! What a terrible thing slavery was and the cruelty to people of color is heartbreaking. Sad to think of how evil humans can be. May God forgive us!
So much history in this book, there’s love, compassion, evil and good. Easy to love the main characters. I enjoyed the journey the author took you through
