Cast in Shadow (Shadow SEALs)

The Shadow SEALs were once the best of the best, recruited from obscurity after their fall from grace to work in the shadows, enacting justice upon our enemies and protecting those caught in the crosshairs by any means necessary.

This is Zeke’s story.

Scapegoat. Fall guy. Puppet…. Hero

Navy SEAL Zeke Ericsson got shafted, plain and simple. He took the fall for something that wasn't his fault and is understandably bitter. These days, his only allegiance is to himself. And if he’s using his special skills to line his own pocket? All the better.

Aggie Mays, a.k.a, Robin Hood, is a ghost, but a good one. Like her nickname suggests, she's all about using her expert hacking skills to funnel ill-gotten gains to where they're really needed.

When Aggie goes missing, it's up to Zeke to find her - for a price, of course. And find her, he does. But he doesn't expect to lose his jaded heart in the process.

Zeke

Zeke had no plan. That was the great thing about drifting—he didn’t need one. He had enough cash in his pocket to keep him going for a while, as long as he was smart about it. Eventually, he’d find a place he’d want to stay in for more than a night or two, preferably one with a decent tattoo shop where he could pick up some work. If that didn’t pan out and he needed money, well, there was always someone looking to hire a day laborer.

Several days after his abrupt departure, he was holed up in yet another roadside motel, skimming through cable channels, feeling inexplicably unsettled. Something was coming down the pike; he felt it in his bones, like an approaching storm. Exactly what “it” was, he didn’t know, but the feeling had been growing steadily, so he figured it wouldn’t be long before he did.

He was drifting in the subspace between restful sleep and semi-consciousness when the sound of his cell phone chime brought him instantly back to full alertness. He carried a burner for emergencies, but he rarely used it and no one had the number.

And yet… it was ringing.

He extracted the phone from his jacket pocket and stared at the Unknown caller ID. It was probably just a robocall, his number one of thousands some AI bot dialed every hour. Irritated and wide awake once again, he powered down the phone and tossed it on the table on his way to the bathroom to take a p!ss.

Then it started ringing again.

Zeke leaned back and looked through the open doorway in disbelief. A bad feeling churned in his stomach, and it wasn’t because of the questionable food he’d ingested.

He turned it off again. And again, it came right back on and rang again.

Annoyed, Zeke thumbed the answer call icon, and held the device to his ear, ready to let loose a string of profanities.

Before he could, however, a silky-smooth woman’s voice purred into his ear. “Chief Warrant Officer Ericsson.”

Zeke tensed at the address. He wasn’t that man anymore. Hadn’t been since the day they’d dishonorably discharged him from the Navy and told him not to let the door hit him in the ass on the way out.

“Wrong number.” He disconnected the call and tossed the cell onto the bed as if it was going to bite him. It rang again immediately.

Because of course, it did.

Since turning it off didn’t seem to have an effect, he considered alternatives. Dropping it in the toilet, for instance, or perhaps crushing it under the heel of his boot.

The ring tone changed. Instead of the standard default, it played the opening chords of a song. One that chilled his bones. The last time he’d heard that particular melody, he and his team had been preparing to walk into what would become his worst nightmare.

He moved to the window and peered out from the side of the drawn blinds, scanning the parking lot below. Rain was visible in the glow of the streetlights, but he saw nothing unusual or suspicious. No cars that hadn’t been there before. No dark figures lurking in the shadows.

He crossed the room and looked through the fish-eye peep hole in the door. Saw nothing. Heard nothing.

Only that damn phone.

He picked it up and answered for a second time. The woman laughed softly, a dangerous sound that sent a shiver down his spine.

“I don’t make mistakes, Mr. Ericsson.”

“Who are you? What do you want?”

“You can call me Charley. Quite simply, I want you.”

He pulled the phone away from his ear and stared at it for a full five seconds before bringing it back to his face. “I don’t know who you are, lady, or how you got this number, but I’m not for sale.”

Another silky chuckle. “That’s not what I hear, Raguel. What did you think of that burger, by the way? I prefer mine without onions, but to each his own.”

Zeke clamped his lips together, his brain working overtime. This woman knew his former rank. Knew his moniker. Knew his burner cell number and what he’d had for dinner the night before.
Zeke checked the windows and door again.

“I know all about you, Mr. Ericsson,” she continued, as if reading his mind.

“Yeah? What do you know?”

“I know you didn’t do what the Navy accused you of. I know you have a thing for helping those in need, for a price. I know you live in the shadows, a transient existence, and wish for more. I want to grant your wish.”

“What are you, my fairy godmother?”

“Something like that,” she said, amusement coloring her tone.

What the actual f*ck? Who was this woman?

He answered his own question. Not anyone I want to deal with.

“Sorry, Charley. Not interested.”

He disconnected the call. Unsurprisingly, it rang again. He didn’t answer it. Then the landline room phone began to ring. He ignored it too and gathered his things, leaving the burner behind. He’d pick up another on his way out of town.

Except… the same thing happened at the next town. And the next.

Whoever this Charley was, she was good, he’d give her that. She had eyes and ears everywhere. Knew his every move. After four days, he was faced with a choice: go completely off grid or find out what exactly she wanted from him. His curiosity got the better of him.

“All right. I’m listening,” he said finally.

“I have a proposition for you, Mr. Ericssen, one I think you will find appealing.”

He doubted it. “What proposition?”

“A packet has been left at your door. Review it. I’ll be in touch.”

What a wonderful book. I was gripped by the story from the very first page. Aggie is totally bad ass and I wish I had her skills not only with computers but in self defence too. Zeke has been burned in the past by those he was supposed to be able to trust. Aggie is so secretive. She’s out doing her best to save the little guys without anyone knowing who she is. This book was different from what I normally have read from Abbie Zanders, those books are great, this book feels a bit grittier and just as good if not better. I loved the tie in with her other series’s Sanctuary and Callaghan’s. I really hope that this is the start of another series, I’d like to read more about the Chameleons. I also want to know more about Aggie, what’s her real name for a start.
I received this book from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Pure Excellence!

This could be Abbie's best book yet! It is hard to find a book that truly keeps you guessing what will happen from one page to the next, but this book has that nailed in spades. The romance aspect isn't as strong, but the action, adventure and intrigue of it keep you drawn in. I read this book all in one go because I just couldn't put it down.

There are aspects of this book that draw on past books by Abbie Zanders, in particular her Callahan and Sanctuary series, so you may want to look there next if you want more info on some things covered in this book. They, too, are excellent reads.

What a great book, from start to finish I could not put it down. I loved Aggie and Zeke, their back stories and the secrets they kept was reason enough to continue reading. I really hope that she does a story about T, he really has me wanting more especially after Sean and Nic's story. I really hated seeing this book end cause it just seems there is so much to Aggie and Asked story ( hint, hint ). I highly recommend this story and any of Abbie' s books you will not be disappointed.

Aggie & Zeke learn to work as a team of 2 and complement each other strengths.

Aggie is kidnapped and Zeke is hired by the mysterious Charley to find her. He accomplishes this quickly and saves her (She was breaking out just as Zeke turned up. Go figure) anyway he spirits her away to safety and sets about delivering her to Charley.
life becomes complicated as they both develop feelings for each other which eventually Zeke looks for her again. The chase, romance and some gutsy behaviour sees them learn to bond with each other as neither can do without the other.
Great book and you will love it too. Wished it continued on some more.

Wow, Once I started this, I couldn’t put it down. What a fantastic story, I loved that Aggie was smart and loyal and Zeke was a tough, broody, alpha male with honor and integrity. It was great to get to see some of my favorite Callaghans and the guys from Sanctuary and Kyle from the Connelly cousins series. Zeke and Aggie had combustible chemistry from the start but they had to learn to open up and trust each other.I would definitely recommend this book. I was given an arc and this is my honest review.

Loved this story!!
This book intertwined 3 of my favorite series, The Callaghan Brothers series, their “relative” spin-off, and Sanctuary that the Callaghans had cameo appearances in. It did so seamlessly too. But what's even better is this story can be read independently from these series. But you will get hooked and want to binge-read them all. Especially book 4 of the Callaghan's series that ties in those characters introduced with this new book's characters. Which once again intrigued me and wanting more of a certain character back story again!! Now along with his sister too!
Here's hoping Ms. Zanders continues with these characters' stories.
Because I NEED more!!

Cast in Shadows

Zeke has been dishonorably discharged as a SEAL, although he didn't do anything wrong. He received a call from Charley to find and rescue Aggie. Enter mystery, missing people, bad guys that were paid to be good guys, love and friendship. Mix it all together and get a page turner novel you don't want to put down.

I loved this story. Zeke and Aggie come from different worlds, but they are the same down inside their soul. The inclusion of people from Abbie's other worlds is fun. It was a wonderful story of finding your way and falling in love! Perfect for Valentine's day.

It’s Abbie Zander’s of course I LOVE IT!
And the surprises and twists and turns are FANTASTIC!
Zeke Ericsson is a Navy Seal. He once had a team and always had someone to watch his back…. Until it was all taken away from him. He took the blame for a mission gone bad. Now he works alone hiding in the Shadows.
Aggie is wicked smart and a computer genius. She likes to hide in plain site. Until everything goes wrong. And this is where their story begins.
Zeke is sent to save her and what does she do? She saves him right back. After all isn’t that what you do for your Croie? “Your soulmate. Your perfect match.”
It was fun catching up with the Callaghans, Sanctuary guys and Kyle from Connelly Cousins series. I feel a couple of new books on the horizon. Who is Aggie? T?

I just finished reading Cast In Shadow by Abbie Zanders. This book is a part of the Seals In Shadows series.
I loved this book. Zeke and Aggie are perfect for each other. The storyline in this book was so good. It kept me engaged thru out the whole book and had me reading it in one sitting. Every time I tried to put the book my mind raced with what was happening in the book so I had to pick it back up. Lol. This book is a must read for sure.

"Who are you? Aggie asked. "Who sent you? And how did you find me?"

I admit that I am painfully behind where I wanted to be in writing my review for this book; I have been having the most difficult time conveying in words, my sentiments for this book. Honestly, I cannot find enough superlatives! LOL

Admittedly, I am a huge fan of all of Abbie's works, and every time that I read one her books, I decide that it is my new favorite, this time is no exception. Zeke Ericsson, is a quintessential hero, full of dark, broody mystery, sex appeal, and danger. However, he is more of an avenging angel than a run-of-the-mill bad boy. His backstory is a heartbreakingly tragic one, that is very believable and beautifully written. Aggie, much like Zeke, is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. She is deceptively cunning and a lot tougher than her diminutive stature would belie. From the moment these two connect, there is evident combustible chemistry bubbling just beneath the surface, which both are hesitant to act upon, given the circumstances that thrust them together.

This story, like all Abbie Zanders novels, is filled with intrigue, suspense, and of course, romance. However, this book seems to have tuned the dial up on that recipe ten-fold, and for me, was super hard to put down - I lost a LOT of sleep, due to OMCS (One More Chapter Syndrome), because I craved more of the universe I had become so immersed in. And like several of her other books, Abbie had managed to weave many of her other beloved characters from her other books into this tale, from members of the Callahan clan in Pine Ridge to the Connolly cousins in Birch Falls, and several others.

In a lot of way, this book felt like a homecoming of sorts, but yet, so much more than that at the same time. I HIGHLY recommend this read to anyone and everyone, whether new to Abbie or an existing Abbie reader. If I could give more than five stars, I definitely would! I can't wait until Abbie's next offering, however, in the meantime, I will DEFINITELY be reading this one again!!

Oh what an excellent book - I was enthralled and completely gripped from start to finish! Two people who live and work in the shadows and doing so alone operating in every shade of grey. Aggie is a kickass computer geek with mad skills whose mission is to right wrongs, protect the innocent and crush the bad guys but her life is a closed book with more secrets than any alphabet agency. Zeke was the fall guy, burned and hung out to dry by those who should have had his back, people he trusted. He is still after the bad guys but on his terms. The connection between them is soul deep and they burn for each other but how can Zeke trust her when there is so much he doesn't know and she cannot and will not share.
I loved the suspense, the story kept me on my toes and guessing until the very end and beyond, it was slightly edgier with a different feel to a lot of Abbie Zanders books and every bit as good as I would expect. Made even better by the tie in to Sanctuary, the Callaghans and those mysterious Chameleons - I still have questions maybe they could be answered in a new series please??
I received an arc from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This may be book 10 in the Shadow SEALs series but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone! I loved this book right from the start! Aggie is smarter than most people but she is also this kick butt woman who isn't afraid to do the things that need to be done. Zeke is a little bitter about his past, but who could blame him! I loved him though! He is definitely all alpha and protective and while he lives a different life than what he was trained for-all those characteristics are still there! They have this chemistry right from the start that I loved, but they also had to learn to talk to each other and actually trust each other. The story line and suspense involved kept me reading and needing to know more all while falling in love with the characters! And if you have read this author's other books-then you will love seeing some of those characters pop up as well! I am hoping that this book will be the tie-in to getting a Chameleon's series next! Although, I will be honest here, I would read anything this author wants to write because her books are that good!

Grab a good pillow and something yummy to eat before you start Cast In Shadows by Abbie Zanders. Its one of those stories that you will start to read and before you know it hours have gone by. Zeke and Aggie are do-gooders in their own way, they each go try and help the under dog but by different means. Zeke a merc for hirer but he only takes jobs that involve “bad people” and Aggie is the current version of Robin Hood. When Zeke takes a job that leads him to find Aggie and rescue her the fireworks begin. This story has it all, action, romance, drama , and two badass heroine and hero. Not to mention more badass people from past stories Ms. Zanders has written. Anyone who is an avid reader has a favorite Author, their go to writer when they can’t find a new book that they want to read. You always know you can pick up a book by Abbie Zanders and get lost in her stories and later go back and re-read her books and get just as excited about them.

Zeke is jaded after being wrongfully accused of being a traitor during his time in the military. He has decided he needs no one and can only rely on himself. He is working as a transient tattoo artist and taking life day by day. Aggie (aka Robin) is a hacker who likes to work alone. She likes to help the little guy and take on big time corruption. When she is kidnapped, a third party decides Zeke needs to help rescue Aggie. What no one counted on was the attraction between them - two loners who like to work in the shadows.

I love Abbie Zanders books. I have them all. She is an automatic one click author. Every. Single. Book. That being said, I think this book is FANTASTIC. Again, I have enjoyed them all, but there is something about interweaving new with the old that just made this book a top one. I love seeing the Callaghans, Kyle, and of course, Taser. FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!

Maybe my Favorite Read of 2022 So Far!!

Two people. Each flies under the radar. She is a modern day “Robin Hood” who infiltrates and finds evidence of wrong-doing. Those big dollars are taken away from the environmental nightmare companies and individuals and moved over to shelters, and rescue organizations.

She ticks off the wrong people.

He took a dishonorable discharge from the Navy, but did nothing wrong. Now he is an avenging angel by dark, and a tattoo artist by day. A mystery caller asks him to find Robin Hood. His ‘no” turns to “yes” after he learns enough about Robin Hood to respect her.

Fascinating characters, a possible relationship, the intrigue of those doing wrong and those working to remedy them. An absolutely stellar story which keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time!

Zeke Ericsson has taken the blame for a mission gone wrong and now lives in the shadows and does what he wants and goes where he wants until the mysterious Charlie calls him. How does she know so much about him and his past? She has a job for him but, can he trust her? He takes the job to find hacker Aggie. She's smart and also a loner. She lives in the shadow too but has gone missing. When he finds her can they figure out why she was taken and learn to trust each other? There's a chemistry between them that is great. We get to see the guys from Sanctuary and the Callaghan's. How does Aggie know them? This is just one of the questions to be answered. I would like to see a story about her brother T and get his background. Abbie has herself another winner!

I loved this book from page one. Protective and Steady, words to describe Zeke, or white knight, inner caveman, worthy. The author really knows how to hook you, tidbits are released the more you get into the story and I thought, no way!, no way, it couldn't be, ... but it was, in came those other characters, and then the next set of characters, and the smile on my face was so, so wide. Totally awesome. Great story, great characters, great ending. Makes me want to go back and read all, and I mean all those other stories in both series. Actually, I have re-read some of those books. Highly, highly recommend this book. I'm still smiling days after finishing this book.

Cast In Shadow is the latest book in the Shadow SEALS by Abbie Zanders. With Abbie Zanders you are guaranteed a great suspenseful storyline with interesting characters and a happy ending. Zeke was a SEAL, but then he took the fall for a mission gone wrong. Now he is living in the shadows dispensing justice and designing tattoos. Aggie is a hacker with her own secret brand of justice, and she is living undercover as a bartender in a small town. The mysterious Charley has hired Zeke to find Aggie because she is in danger. Along the way the two badasses with good moral compasses find that lives might be better not living alone in the shadows. The kindred spirits with the urge to wander accompany each other on a trip that will change their lives. Their chemistry is sizzling, and they are drawn to each other when their strong opinions aren’t clashing. They get some help along the way from the Sean Callaghan, Nicki, and Sanctuary. Can they be together, or would it just not work? I could not put the book down until I found out!

I am ecstatic that the newest edition of Shadow SEALs has begun and the kickoff book Cast in Shadow is by one of my favorite authors, Abbie Zanders. The mysterious Charley is back to offer opportunities to former Navy SEALs who've had their careers unjustly ended for a variety of reasons. I was delighted that a few favorite characters from other series by Ms Zanders made appearances in this book.

Zeke Ericsson and Aggie Mays kindred spirits. Both lead transient lives not wanting to feel tied down. However their reasons for doing so couldn't be farther apart. Trust isn't easy for either of them but in the course of Zeke fulfilling his promise to Charley, a bond begins to form, between him and Aggie. The attraction keeps ramping up until spontaneous combustion may occur. Giving in is a game changer but what happens after he fulfills jis duties is life alltering.

Aggie is smart and a loner. Zeke and Aggie have great chemistry and must learn to trust each other. I love how this book pulls characters from other books. We get a glimpse of Sanctuary and the Callaghan's. We are left to wonder how these guys all kow Aggie. I was great to hear about her brother T. This is another page turner and defintely a winner. That you Abbie for another wonderful book!

I was captivated from the first chapter! Zeke is the ultimate bad boy ex Navy SEAL hired to find the elusive cyber hacker “Robin Hood” who takes down bad guys and gives their riches to the needy. Both are resigned to a solitary life but eventually figure out that they’ve found their soulmate.
I had no idea this book was linked to Abbie’s Callaghan Series or Sanctaury Series. There was definitely an “aha!” moment that caught me by surprise! You can read this book as a stand alone but it so much better when you know all the characters who get involved. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!!

This story had me continuously guessing throughout as to what was going to happen next. Just when I thought I knew, it would take me in another direction and I loved every second of it. Aggie was such an incredibly smart, tough, independent and bad ass heroine. She loves what she does and can stand on her own two feet. Zeke had his own mysterious background. Another loner who was fine being on his own and doing what he is good at. I loved the slow burn in this and how they both truly had to let their guard down to let the other one in and give trust to one another. Abbie Zanders never fails to deliver everything I need in a 5 star story. Wonderful, enjoyable characters, fantastic dialogue that gives me some LOL moments, throw in some mystery that keeps you guessing and of course my favorite kind of ending....a HEA. This was another story fabulous story I was able to escape too for a few hours and came out feeling so satisfied and smiling.

So far, this is my favorite Shadow SEAL book – and Aggie by far my favorite of the main characters. Indomitable and determined, she is perfect for Zeke – both scarred by their pasts and betrayals, and both skilled and fierce. I defy you to start this book and not finish it – the opening chapters are among its greatest strengths and pull the reader in. And then you stay in because you are intrigued, you are curious, and you are as vehement as Aggie that she should succeed. Fantastic cameos from the Callaghans, Connelly cousins, and Sanctuary, but prior reading of those is not necessary to enjoy this standalone; you might, however, be tempted into reading those series too. This was a book I was sorry to see end.

The Scapegoat and The Hacker

This was another solid offering from this author! Zeke is ex-military. During a mission that went wrong, Zeke takes full responsibility and now takes jobs tracking people down. Aggie is a modern day Robin Hood who hacks individuals' and corporations' information to divert their ill gotten gains to worthy people and organizations. Zeke was given a job to find Aggie and bring her in. He ends up rescuing her from people who mean her harm. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue, with both of them having more than their share of secrets. Loved seeing old friends and colleagues! I really enjoyed reading their journey to happiness, just wished it was longer!

Thank you for the privilege of reading this book! Well done

Two kindred spirits that both work in the shadows. Whilst Aggie is a hacker, Zeke is a tattooist, tracker and ex navy seal taking secret jobs on the side. When Aggie goes missing, Zeke is badgered into finding her. It should have been a simple search and rescue, but nothing about Aggie is simple. Not only are they insanely attracted to each other, Zeke is about to get a brief glimpse into a small part of Aggie’s world. Having been burned before, Zeke doesn’t trust easily. With Aggie still keeping secrets, it will take a lot for him to find the courage to maintain a relationship with her just the way she is. Not only is this a secretive, gripping, intriguing story, we get an added treat of appearances by some of the Callaghans and the guys from Sanctuary.

Oh WOW! I loved this book!! Cast In Shadow is a phenomenal romantic suspense by Abbie Zanders. Ms. Zanders has given readers a book that is well-written and loaded with cover to cover excitement. The characters are outstanding. Zeke was forced out of the SEALs for something he didn't do. Now he's a tattoo artist who at times takes out the trash to help those that can't help themselves. Aggie is a modern-day Robin Hood. She travels and works odd jobs while investigating and bringing riff-raff to justice. Zeke and Aggie's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. Every page of this book was a gift I couldn't put down. Cast In Shadow is book 10 of the Shadow SEALs Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.

A tattoo artist who is a hunter and a rescuer. A hacker who is making a difference. Paths that cross and something happens and happens again. Like so many of Abbie Zanders' books Cast in Shadow is a great story and difficult to put down. Many familiar characters are found within the pages, reminding me of previous books and series I have read (and inviting me to reread) and hinting toward future stories. Bravo!!
