As battle looms between the Fae kingdoms and the powerful underworld demons known as Dragon Lords in England’s quiet Lake District, the Fae king, Cadeyrn, returns to the vicarage of St. Lodore’s where magical bluebell gardens serve as portals to the faerie world and the ominous red mountain known as Friar’s Crag becomes the battleground for Fae, Dragon Lords and mortals. Cadeyrn is desperate to find the right mortal girl who will save the Fae, for she is destined to love him and die a fiery death for that love, as foretold in the ancient Draloch prophecy. All seems lost, for the only girl who can see him is Melody Hargreaves, a very unwarrior-like young woman who has never fought dragons. How can she possibly be The One? Melody is being courted by a wealthy lord who seems to adore her and is about to propose marriage, but she feels the powerful magic of her surroundings and is drawn to the world of the Fae and its handsome king. As Bloodaxe, one of the evil Dragon Lords, advances with his demon army, Melody must decide between a safe, comfortable life with the wealthy lord or dying a fiery death at the hands of the Dragon Lords. Melody’s heart belongs to Cadeyrn, and choosing wealth and comfort no longer seems the obvious choice. Cadeyrn has also fallen in love with Melody. How can he change the course of destiny and save her as well as his Fae subjects?
Meara Platt is happily married to her Russell Crowe look-alike husband, and they have two terrific children. She lives in one of the many great towns on Long Island, New York, and loves it, except for the traffic. She has traveled extensively, occasionally lectures and finds time to write. Her favorite place in all the world is England’s Lake District, which may not come as a surprise since many of her stories are set in that idyllic landscape, including her Romance Writers of America Golden Heart award winning story.
Wow, I couldn't put this down. I was captivated from the start. If I was a biter of nails, I wouldn't have any left. An enchanting story about the Fae Kingdoms and the Dragon Lords (demons). Great storyline and characters. It would make a brilliant movie. I love reading Ms. Platt's books. 5 *****Fae stars.
I had to read this book in two periods as this week has seen the release of 4 awaited books for me. So I do loved the plot, and the paranormal universe created by Meara Platt. She redeemed Cadeyrn’s behavior from the first book, I came to like him and comprehend him, he was kind of obtuse about his feeling for Melody, but even without aloud acknowledging his feelings, his actions were perfectly comprehensible. He came from a man without sentiments to a man in love, he had to learn to swim among all these new sensations, to understand what he now feels mean for him. While I liked Melody at the beginning, the more the story loved forward, the more I disliked her, she went from a nice willing young woman to a dumb coward ninny, unable to think for herself and always doubting herself and the only one man who tries his best to save even in spite of his own security and her own attempt to condemn him. I still love this series but I’m not fond of weak whinny feminine protagonists, Ygraine and Edain were so much more stronger characters, fighting for they believed in.
I had read the first book of this series a couple of years ago and now I'm finally reading the rest! Meara Platt has written such a fascinating and magical series that involve dragons, fae, demons, prophecies, as well as heroes and heroines that are fated for unsurpassed love.
This is Cadeyrn and Melody's story and believe me, it's a story that will have your emotions in a tangle! Cadeyrn is the Fae King and Melody is just a mortal girl who has been chosen to save the fairie world as told by the prophecy. Everything depends on her love for the Fae King but when she finds out her love for him will be the death of her, she will need to trust him and herself! Easier said than done and in the meanwhile, Dragon Lords and demons are playing havoc in the underworld and no one is safe, especially Cadeyrn and Melody!!
I'm loving this series and can't wait to read the rest. Well written and worth more than 5 stars to me!!
Book #2 in the series, continues the fight between the Fae, demons & humans with another human female at the center of it all as the possible "savior/ sacrifice".
You know technically I am a very picky person when it comes to paranormal romance since I read so many of them and it is very hard to please me when it comes to this genre. Some writers need to stay in the genre they write in because they write so well in it. So when they try their hand at paranormal it’s not as smooth as a transition but this book by Ms. Meara Platt not only pleased me as a paranormal romance lover but just made me love to read it. I am familiar with Ms. Platt’s regency historical romance and was apprehensive to even think that she could write the paranormal world sufficiently but Ms. Platt covers this with such easy grace. Sure I have read the first book in the dark garden series and was kind of on the border about it but this book in my opinion truly shines and made me smile. Plus this book despite being in the series could standalone without getting too lost. Ms. Platt gives enough background which also helps too. The writing in both the real world, Fae world and the darker dragon lord world was not only easily imagined but made me want to visit well at least the real world and Fae one. The characters simmer with life and seemed almost real too. Melody Hargreaves sees an unresponsive stranger in her bluebell garden and she wants him out. The stranger is ruining her garden and she decides to get him out by herself. She pushes him and he almost falls into the hot springs and she doesn’t want him to end up in the water. While Melody is checking to make sure the guy isn’t injured he wakes up. The stranger is none other than King Caderyn King of the Woodlands Fairies. Caderyn is looking for the Julia the girl written in the prophecy to save his realm and instead finds Melody. Caderyn wonders since being a Fae King is usually invisible to humans but Melody can see him. Caderyn is intrigued by Melody and she by him. As Melody spends more time with Caderyn she slowly falls in love with him. Is she the one the prophecy spoke of or is she just another ordinary girl? When I first read about King Caderyn in the first book I didn’t like him. Caderyn was arrogant, set in his ways, stubborn and unyielding. It seemed like he had no regard and was just going to push a girl with his magic to make him love him. He wasn’t winning any points with me and I didn’t see him as a very good hero or one that I would even like. In this book I understood him more and even fell for him too. Caderyn totally did a complete turn around and pretty much redeemed himself in this book. He was able to admit his mistakes plus loved his people but was scared to admit his feelings of love. So despite being a king and Fae he was able to admit he was wrong but was willing to save Melody no matter what the cost. Melody was an equally good heroine for him she was sassy, stubborn, and assertive she really loved not only her family but Caderyn as well. She did annoy me a little though even after all the times as being intimate with Caderyn well excluding the first time that he didn’t love her? Especially since touch and feelings weren’t well known to the Fae at times I did want to shake her. I still loved the story enough to finish it and have even read it twice. I definitely can’t wait to see what Ms. Platt has in store for the next in the series because I will be eagerly awaiting that book now.
Melody is perfect in all details, very special, the kind of girl that born to be a Queen!
I loved the complete story, since the begining, amazing! Every time happening many important things.
In the first book I though that Cadeyrn was like a vilain, but on this book we have the opportunity to know more about him and realize that he also could be lovely. Both Cadeyrn and Melody will fall in love and learn about love together, discovering the maginal thing that is love and give the life for whose we love.
When she found Cadeyrn and the way she react, trying to refuse believe that he was a Fae King, I though very funny - I loved the way she talked with Cadeyrn!!! She shows that she was a powerful woman!
It's very funny the way she tried explaining Cadeyrn what is loving, and why she couldn't be "The One". The fight with dragons was curious, but necessary for Cadeyrn to be sure about her. But then seems that she was afraid.
Lord Babcock invited her to know a refined world, and Cadeyrn was jealous and decided take her to know his farie world.
Melody had been hurted by Dragon Brihan, the only way to be saved was coupling with Cadeyrn, later she was sure about her love for him. They together had the opportunity to know a little about the past through the Draloch Stone. Ygraine and Brihan were lovers before he became Bad.
The end, what can I say about the end? I suspected about the vicar's, not really about Babcock, but everything was very well written!!!
"“The only way to heal a dragon’s cut is with a stronger force ... love. The act of love. All out, nothing held back. Melody, it is the only way to save you.” “Wait! What are you saying?” “Are you willing?” “I must give myself to you or die?” He nodded. “Are you willing?” This was her choice? To refuse and die a painful, virgin death or accept and ... she didn’t know what might happen then, only that she would no longer be the person she was this morning. For Cadeyrn, their lovemaking would be a necessary act of healing. For her, she realized with a start, it would be the act of love. Tonight, she would give her heart and body to Cadeyrn. “Yes, I’m willing.”"
Ygraine explaining about love to Cadeyrn: "“Very well,” she said after a long moment, “if only to confirm what you have come to know. It ... conquers every part of you ... your head, your heart ... and soul. It heats your blood and overwhelms your memory so that the joy of love ... or the pain of lost love, never dims. I wish with all my heart that you could save all of us, we Fae and Melody, but it is not written in the Draloch Prophecy.”"
This part was perfect, Cadeyrn talking about his love to Melody: "“A human once told me that to like someone meant you would do something nice for them, but to love someone meant you would die for them. That’s what I’m willing to do for you, Melody. I won’t sacrifice you to save my people. I’ll find another way to defeat Brihann, even if I must die for it.”"
Edain is still suspect for me, maybe we can see something about her in another book???
Well!!! the final is perfect but I ansious about the other books!!!!
This book continues the story of the King of the Fae, Caderyn in his search for the saviour mortal queen who has been foretold will defeat the evil dragon lord and rescue his people from disaster.
He is surprised when he discovers that Melody, the step-daughter of the new vicar can see him. Even more importantly, she can touch him without ill effect, unlike any other mortal woman Caderyn has known.
Like all fey, Caderyn is no-nonsense, brutally blunt, without feeling or human emotions. He tells Melody that she is likely The One foretold in prophecy to become his queen and will fall desperately in love with him. Melody is completely nonplussed. She treats him like an annoying simpleton, with kindness but doesn't take him seriously. Until she becomes convinced of his story and sees the reality of the danger he faces every day from the dragons and their evil minions.
Caderyn slowly falls for Melody, but has zero finesse. She believes he cares for her as a means to an end for his people's future. The risk of falling for Caderyn is fulfilling the prophecy, which states she must die a fiery death to ensure the King's victory over the dragons.
There was a bit too much to-ing and fro-ing over Melody doubting Caderyn's feelings, and her (understandable) unwillingness to become the sacrificial lamb. The action and plot were enjoyable though. The series continues, but I am happy to end things here.
Book two, nothing like book one. I just didn't care for this book. I guess one my biggest complaints is Melonie. I just don't like weak women that whine and whine a whole lot and all the time. Honestly it just made me want smack her or get far far away from her. I didn't get the whole "Melonie will save the Fae " and " Melonie is more powerful than anyone or any being" thing. Melonie couldn't save herself. She hid, she cried, she complained, she whined. Ugh. Melonie didn't save anyone. Aside from that I just didn't get story line and the writing just wasn't what it was in book one sadly. Maybe its just me. Maybe I didn't care for the whole magical kingdom and what not, honestly I don't know. To be blunt Melonie seemed be portrayed as a dingbat. I recommend this book if you like weak whiny complaining women who are just lack of a better word "dumb". If your into magical kingdom of Fae and what not then you may love this book. I'm personally just glad I made it to the end without throwing my kindle. Three stars because I like the author and I haven't read a book she wrote I didn't like until this one so maybe it is just me?
Cadeyrn and Melody ...a lot to take in. I have read all three books. I unfortunately started with book 3 then went back and read book one and now book 2. I have to say that garden of light has been my favorite so far. Even though Melody's insecurities were quite prolonged. That is truly my only critique. I loved watching Cadeyrn, the Fae King, in my mind develope his feelings for Melody throughout the story. He was a Fae King looking to fulfill the prophecy of the Dragon stone in finding his queen in order to save his people. In this case, the woman to fulfill the prophecy, to his amazement, is to be Melody, a human who can see him and who is a little Spitfire.
I look forward to book for Bloodaxe's story. I am hoping it will not be long.
So difficult it was to put this series down and move on to other commitments as it’s such a fantasical tale, and Melody and Cadeyrn are the perfect match. Cadeyrn needs to find “The One,” the mate that will turn the tides in war with the Dragon Lords, or risk losing his people forever. But the Fae don’t have feelings like mortal humans - it’s been suppressed for centuries. Mortal people have trouble seeing the Fae, but Melody does, could he finally have found the mortal woman that can save the fae?
I can say that I liked Cadeyrn in the first book, but I LOVED him in this one. The development of the characters and the world building are in excellent hands with Ms. Platt, and I didn’t want to leave. I am going to be making time for the rest of this series. Reviewed by Cyrene
The second in this series was a story filled with magic, love and the ever present evil. The Fae King Caderyn must save his people from the Dragon Lords, but he can't do this alone. Melody is a simple vicar's daughter at least that was her belief until she actually sees Caderyn. I loved how each of these characters had to come to grips with their vulnerabilities to realize their strengths. The plot was complex woven with a strong emotional relationship. Beautiful setting that made you wish you could be transported to the fairy world. It was action packed that left you holding your breath. It was a overall entertaining read that I couldn't part down. I can't wait for the 3rd installment.
DNF @45%. This book lacked the charm and coziness of the first in the series, and I just couldn’t buy into instalove between the hero and heroine - especially when Cadeyrn’s supposed to be a 5,000 year old, jaded fae prince who had literally zero regard for human life in the first book. I would need just a little bit more build-up to this sudden change of heart. Also, the heroine Melody’s frequent vacillating between loving and fearing Cadeyrn annoyed me since it didn’t read as genuine angst or indecision: just plot convenience.
TLDR: this one didn’t do it for me, but I’d still read other books by this author in the future
Caderyn is back in this second installment of the Dark Gardens series and he has found his right queen this time. This enemies to lovers story is filled to the brim with action. The Dragon Lords were pretty fearsome and I was just glad that Caderyn and Melody managed to defeat the villains responsible for the devastation of the Fae kingdom. It was interesting how Caderyn had a redemption arc in this book compared with the first book.
The strength of love is stronger then fae magic. Caderyn has to learn to love. Melody is the “one” and she has to learn to trust and believe in herself. Caderyn is different in this book than the first book. He’s more compelling and a more sympathetic character than the last book. Melody is fascinating. She’s kind, loyal but insecure. This is a truly interesting paranormal read.
For a man, even a man of the Fae, to know his own heart? Nevertheless, the journey that Cadeyrn takes to find that answer is full of excitement and suspense. Melody also has a journey of danger and desire before the two find their happy ending. This isn't a predictable tale of romance by any means!
A simple vicar’s daughter, the king of the Fae, evil dragons and other demons fight. Early 1800s England knows nothing of the 5,000 year-old war with good battling against dark dragons that intend to rule over all realms on Earth. Not an epic tale but fun to read as rich characters realize love really has strength greater than hate.
Okay so the first book was good but compared to this one!!! Man oh man so much action & adventure!!! I didn't like Cadeyrn at first because of the first book. But I fell on love with him in this one. Melody is a strong woman who doesn't even know her own strength. The pair is a power couple!!! On your book 3!!!
I am a big fan of Meara Platt's stories and this series is fantastic. Anytime you can bring fairies and dragons into the story, you have a winner. Great story with some hidden meanings about believing in yourself and standing up for love and the right. Good read!
And will continue reading your other books!!!😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😗😐😐😐😑Thank you for great books. I hope the next book is even better than number 2 book!!!!!
The pacing of these books, both Romance and plot, is off. The romance is too fast, the plot too slow. It’s definitely a higher quotient Romance than Fantasy.
Set in 1817 St. Lodore’s village Borrowdale England, twenty year old Melody Hargreaves is surprised by the unexpected appearance of a mysterious handsome man named: Cadeyrn. This is a fantasy romance, as the majority of the story’s action takes place in the fairy realm.
Loved it. After the 1st book in the series I wasn't sure if id like one about The Fae king but it turns out he isn't such a bad guy after all. Lots of magic and love in this book
I was so glad Cadeyrn found someone! While reading the story I was kept wondering how everything would turn out because of the prophesy! Now I just hope something comes around for Bloodaxe!
This may be a fantasy but has real emotions so well portrayed that you can't help but get charmed and engulfed by its magic. A thoroughly enjoyable story.
Captivating and enchanting, I enjoyed the story and romance between Cadeyrn and Melody. A magical world of fascination and danger and a wonderful happily ever after.
This did not quite wow me as much as Book 1, but I did enjoy reading how the Fae king finally found his One. Here the reader spends more time in the Fae kingdom.
The story left me extremely gratified after experiencing the Fae king’s tumultuous inner battles understanding what feelings are, since Fae had long ago lost that part of them. Some humans are connected to the Fae, sensitive to their presence. King Cadyrn needs to find his mortal queen, a queen who knows how to fight dragons and save his people. The Prophecy must be fulfilled.
This time the king decides not to jump to conclusions as he did with Julia (her story is book 1), nor force himself upon a human, thinking she were a possible candidate to be his queen. Yes, Melody Hargreaves sees him as she stumbles upon him sleeping among the bluebell flowers in her yard. Yes, when he touches her she feels no pain, as mortals would. But would kissing her have her meet her death? But Cadeyrn is cautious, he doesn’t want to scare her off, nor kill an innocent. He very carefully decides to seduce her as his council recommends he do. He is also a very nice Fae king, not like in some stories I’ve read. He has my heart, right away!
He explains very matter of fact to Melody, his predicament for his Fae realm, hoping to convince her she may be the One. Melody things him insane, but manages to put him off, gently, of course, because she is that sort of person. However, soon enough she believes he is Fae. Her fears are set in motion.
Young, innocent Melody Hargreaves, too, doesn’t understand her feelings toward Cadeyrn. If you are following the series, you may recall in book one he thought the vicar’s daughter, Julia Marsden, was his queen to be. She, too, saw him, but only after she started believing. Being fae, he little understands the feelings of humans, and very methodically works for a solution, without engaging his feelings. After a dismal failure with his wrongly-chosen queen, he once again hopes to find his queen. His very realm is in danger.
The author, with her delightful descriptive scenes, takes us to the Fae kings home, where we get to visit those he protects. We learn he’s been fighting a battle with Dragon Lords for 5000 years. We see the damage done to his kingdom by these evil demons. We drop into the underworld and smell the stench of the wicked and see the oozing green slime. Yes, this is a most satisfying read, for those who love Fae, the unbelievable made real, where a young maiden has the power within her to fight and above all for those who believe what magic the power of love can work.
I received this ARC copy from the publisher for an unbiased review. These are my opinions and in no way are influenced by anyone except the talent of the author. I highly recommend the series.
