In Paris, a renowned art historian is found dead in her bathtub with a fatal stab wound in her gut, leaving the authorities to question if it was a suicidal publicity stunt—or murder. An Algerian student goes missing and Louie finds her bones in the catacombs.
Konstantine, notorious leader of a Florentine gang, does what he can to assist Louie in her search—until he is asked to choose between his loyalty to her and the men who rely on him.
Then as Louie investigates these two cases for answers and a connection, more women disappear.

I adore all of the Louie Thorne books, but I think this one might surpass the first as my favourite in the series. There is tons of character growth along the way, and damn if I haven't become fond of Jabbers... There is a variety of well-written settings here, some new and some familiar from the other books in this series. As always, the author has placed us so firmly in these settings that we can smell the mustiness of the catacombs and feel the cool lick of water in La Loon.
I thought I knew who the killer in Paris was, but holy crap was I wrong! I love it when a book can surprise me that much. This book, like the others in the series, is re-read worthy. So many times over. There is angst, fear, confusion, new fondness that might be called love, there is loyalty, hope and justice. All the things that make a story relatable and binge-worthy. This one has it all and might just be Kory Shrum's best yet.
I was so thrilled to be granted an ARC (thank you, Kory!), but I love this series so much, I'll be buying it. (We really should support our favourite Indie authors, don't you think?)
Another fantastic story in this unbelievable series. Intrigue and suspense to keep you reading to find out what happens at the end. The characters are something special. Definitely ready for the next one.
Not sure what it says about me that adore Lou and her gleeful delight in murdering mobster so much. But I really, really do. And I also really like her friendship with Piper. They are so different but the affection & support & acceptance is so genuine. There was no bigger story arc with this one - just smaller individual story arcs for the characters. All of which were great and I enjoyed every one. A random serial killer in Paris for Lou, some mob politics/threats for Konstantine, a potential girlfriend for King and some family/relationship issues for Piper & Dani. That said, my favourite was Konstantine's insofar as Lou played a part in it.
What Comes Around is the sixth book in the Shadows in the Water series by my new favourite author, Kory M. Shrum. I have come to the conclusion that Bookbub has a lot to answer for, on one hand it is a fantastic way to ‘find’ new books/authors to read- but on the other hand I end up spending my entire yearly book budget in a matter of a few months lol. But if it weren’t for Bookbub, I would never have found Ms. Shrum’s books, which would have been a real tragedy, because she really knows how to weave a riveting tale. This is an awesome urban fantasy with so much going on- in a fantastic way. With plenty of action, adventure, mystery, danger, a different realm aspect, suspense, tension, intrigue, drama, the mafia, serial killers, agendas, ‘hunting’, team work, friendship, family, investigation, time factors, gripping scenes, intense developments, twists, romance, and so, so, so much more- you really need to read it to fully appreciate this gem of a series as I doubt my words can really do this series the justice that it deserves. Louie Thorne is the daughter of assassinated DEA agent, Jack Thorne. He, along with her mother, were murdered by a drug cartel when she was just a young child- his death scarred her, in more ways than one. She has bided her time honing her skills, becoming a force to be reckoned with- one so powerful that the ‘bad guys’ will never see her coming. In the process of wreaking revenge, she builds a terrifying reputation that will strike fear into the hearts of her enemies- and it’s her secret ‘ability’ that gives her the upper hand- and gives this whole series a completely unique and addictive quality. So much action. With a lot of violence. And a huge helping of adventure. Resulting in a serious book addiction- while also set this book/series apart from others, and this is a book ‘high’ that will be hard to beat. I developed this addiction to Ms. Shrum’s stories when I stumbled on the Shadows in the Water series -> picking up one book, which then led to two, which then had me devouring the whole series, back-to-back (11 books) in a matter of days. Now I am on tenterhooks, excitedly anticipating the release of Book #12, which can’t come quickly enough for my liking lol. Each book in this series follows on from the previous one – with each instalment having its own ‘story’, but also adding to what has come before, thereby building a much bigger picture along the way- so the series really needs to be read in the correct sequence, to fully appreciate it- and prevent any kind of confusion. The books are available individually if you wish, as well as in Boxed Sets- which, again, is really great value for money. The Series consists of: -Shadows in the Water (Book #1) -Under the Bones (Book #2) -Danse Macabre (Book #3) -Carnival (Book #4) -Devil’s Luck (Book #5) -What Comes Around (Book #6) -Overkill (Book #7) -Silver Bullet (Book #8) -Hell House (Book #9) -One Foot in the Grave (Book #10) -Blood Rain (Book #11) -First Light (Book #12 -> coming soon) If you love highly original urban fantasies with plenty of action and adventure- then this is definitely a series you will want to sink your teeth into- but be prepared to develop a (Kory M.) Shrum addiction! Happy Reading…
This Book continues the exploits of Lou Thorne, the nemesis of criminals and villains. It's best to read the previous books to understand the characters, get the references to previous adventures, and be familiar with the supernatural aspects of Lou and La Loon. With her adopted family of Dani, Piper, Konstantine, and King, they work together to investigate, uncover, and end crime. Lou does the "wet work", the rest investigate and report miscreants to her. There is lots of relationship drama among the team members, but when the occasion warrants, they all work together, looking out for each other. Everything is here: dark mystery, romance, hot sex, good food, bad people getting what they deserved, a happy, satisfying ending - can't ask for more. [CAUTION: spoilers ahead: a quick recap of story highlights, which are no substitute for the actual story!] Lou finds a mystery in the catacombs of Paris. Konstantine faces war with the Albanian Mafia. Lou and Konstantine are still an item. Dani and Piper enter a rough patch as Piper realizes the gulf between their wealth and status. Piper's mom dies of an overdose. Lou finds out what Konstantine's problem is from Stefano and decides to help eliminate the Albanians. Which she does, completely, with extreme prejudice. King and Beth start a relationship, King finally starting to let go of Lucy. Lou solves the mystery of the bones in the catacombs, but almost loses her life. Konstantine manages to save her with the help of La Loon and Jabbers. Finally, everyone is together for Thanksgiving.
What Comes Around isn't a standalone book. As the sixth in the series, it relies on a deep pool of understandings, concepts and structures created early on. That said, the first book (Shadows in the Water) sets the tone and principal characters; if you read that you'll be rewarded even if you skip down a bit.
Which you should not do.
Because while Kory Shrum's first entry into this series is blindingly brilliant, her second, Under the Bones, is even better. And, in fact, every entry in this series is well worth the short time you invest in them. Short, because her books flow so quickly through your eyes and mind with characters who make you laugh aloud, and the tears flow.
What Comes Around is no exception. The sudden death of Piper's mom throws lives in turmoil. Lou is called on to aid ... some bones? Meanwhile Constantine's sister forces him to make the devil's choice: either call on his strega to kill her enemies or give up something terribly precious. King slips into an awkward confrontation with the Law. And it's Lou's turn at last to be dragged to the mortal peril of La Loon.
I read Shrum's books at least as much for the characters and dialog as for the action and mystery. This one succeeds very well on all counts. Like the others, this was read in a single sitting.
The latest in the Louie Thorne (Shadows in the Water) series certainly doesn't disappoint. I'd recommend clearing your diary for a day before you start it, because you aren't going anywhere until you've finished. We see Lou back to her deadliest best, but why isn't her compass working in Paris? In seeking out the killer of an artist, Lou is constantly drawn to the famous catacombs. What is the significance of the strange dark room she keeps dreaming of? In other news, Lou's relationship with Konstantine becomes more complicated as she helps him to consolidate his position, while he helps her to understand more about the mysterious La Loon. Piper and Dani's life together is threatened as each learns more about the other's family life and past. Meanwhile, Robert King is receiving amorous signals from a powerful woman. As always, we get a great adventure and an insight into the hearts and minds of Louie and her circle. Just don't expect to get anything else done until you've finished the book.
Once again I am in awe at how deftly Ms. Shrum brings her characters to life with thoughts, reactions and conversations that totally "fit" that person and circumstance.
Book 6 of the Louie Thorne series continues the saga of a strangely gifted woman who can travel within the curtain of darkness using a technique Louie calls "slipping". With this ability Louie has become a force to be reckoned with as she pursues criminals across every corner of Earth, and administers her own, permanent, brand of justice. Avenging Angel? Vigilante? The Devil's doorway into Hell? Yes. Yes. And Yes.
You'll find these supernatural suspense-thriller books impossible to put down, so pick a lazy afternoon, pour a tall glass of your favorite beverage and settle in. Louie is once again on the trail of a sinister murderer that takes her deep into the absolute darkness of an ancient catacomb. This is darkness that even she can't wait to leave behind.
This is the 6th book in the Lou Thorne series Shadows in the Water and wow, what a fun read!
Lou and company return in this roller coaster of a ride. Once more I urge you to read the previous books before starting this one as Lou's previous adventures are referenced. The pacing is fast and Lou is, as always, one of the baddest in the room. One of the delights of this series in general and this book in particular is seeing Lou's development. The supporting cast - Lou's friends and 'family' - are complex characters in their own right and they too develop and change.
And of course the Paris setting doesn't hurt!
I enjoyed this book and the twists and turns that Author Shrum gives it.
I read an ARC of this book and have chosen to review it.
Het down to business with the newest case Lou is working on! Let's go to the Paris Catacombs and investigate some murders. While we are at it, let's save some young innocents, and take care of some real bad people.
Lou and the gang are at it again taking on crazy trouble and coming closer together! Want to get to know Piper more? Then I recommend this book! Want to see Lou and King take a chance on their hearts? Then I still recommend this book! Want to learn more about La Loon and Jabbers, because who wouldn't???? Then you need to read this book!!!
There is some crazily dark $&!! happening in this book, but it is all what you would come to expect Louie and her friends to face and they do it with some incredible flair!
I love all of Louie Thorne thrillers, but this is my favorite. I truly didn’t suspect who the murderer was until it was revealed by the author Louie and Konstantine’s love story is interesting and at times very turbulent. There were many side stories with the secondary characters that were superbly described. I feel like I know them all. I stayed up all night to finish this book. I received this book as an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.
Wow! Welcome back Lou Thorne. Perhaps the best book in this series to date. I really enjoy this series - well written, great descriptive passages, great characters and character development, and plenty of action, with many twists and turns to keep the reader on the edge of the seat. With her special abilities, Lou is a bit of an enigma - a super effective, cold-hearted crime fighter, yet also warm and supportive/loving/caring friend and lover. I received this book as an arc and this review is entirely voluntary.
I have enjoyed every book in this series but for me, What Comes Around takes the crown. In this latest offering by Kory M. Shrum, I laughed; felt like slapping someone upside their head; cried angry tears and inwardly cringed at the vitriol spouting from a particularly nasty person's mouth; shed tears of joy when something so wrong was made oh, so right; waited with bated breath to see if Lou was going to survive her latest misadventure. I was sad to reach this book's ending and can't wait to find out what lies ahead.
I love Louie Thorne books. It's funny how I couldn't stand the Dexter TV series but Lou is a paranormal killer and I love the books. It must be Shrum's writing. Her characters are human and likable and their problems are so normal, except for Lou and Jabbers. I am happy Lou has found someone who accepts her for what she is and that she can use her talent to stop the bad guys. Loved this book and can't wait for the next!
Kory Shrum's stories are SO good that I cannot put them down and read them far too quickly. That's why I read it a second time right after finishing it. The characters are whole and defined, the story line definitive and unlike anything else you'll ever read! I applaud you Kory for your imagination, skill and deep tangible love of your gift of writing! Another outstanding FANTASTIC BOOK!
A book with the whole gamut of emotions. I'm only halfway through, but writing the review now, so I can't give anything away. Lou Thorne is a complex character A lovable murderous angel, or devil. Take your pick, but anything for a friend. Plenty of other great characters making this a book you get engrossed in, not wanting it to end, but there's bound to be another. I have not the slightest doubt in recommending this series.
This was so good. Always look forward to each book in this series. If you want to read a good thriller with characters that you grow to like and want to know what will happen to them next, then this is a series for you. Best to start with the first and then you will probably want to binge read them all. Will now start looking forward to the next work and hope she writes fast!!
Louie Thorne, a dark and unrelenting huntress, returns in this riveting new supernatural thriller from bestselling author Kory M. Shrum. More crime to investigate is she up for the tasks? So the hunt for a new killer begins… Great normal character's you can relate too. Non stop action a really great story.
This is an amazing storyline filled with danger, murder mystery, violence, retribution, character development, romance, great secondary characters, resourcefulness, and of course, Jabbers. Love Jabbers! There is more to learn and love about Lou and Konstantine. I love this series and would recommend it to others. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I cannot believe I have finished it so fast! I'm gutted that I will have to wait another year ish to get the next story . I re-read the previous five books in anticipation of the new book which was great to recap. A new approach to the storyline which I like and a different change of pace for the characters. Great work kory, please keep em coming ☺
I love the way this series just continues to build upon itself and we see new character development in each book. There were some shocking twists in this one, and I really liked learning some new things about La Loon.
My only complaint is that it wasn't longer. I feel like I was able to finish this one much faster than any of the others.
This a a brilliant series for all readers of fantasy books. It is also so different to anything else I have read in this genre. All the main characters are very relatable, and the main character Lou Thorne, is a very surprisingly likeable assassin, who only goes after the bad guts. Love the series and will be waiting very impatiently for the next in the series.
Another terrific novel from my favourte author. Her characters are unique and very real people. You become part of their existence and the story wraps around you to encompass you. I would definitely recommend this novel and the entire series. Bravo again Kory.
I can’t believe I actually am rooting for Lou Thorne to kill all these people , but they are pretty rotten persons. Several things happening in this book. Action, action, romance, loss, animals, friendship I see all these characters in my mind while reading, even Jabbers. I love reading this series.
I really enjoyed this book. A little bit different this time, because we got more of an insight into one of my favourite characters from the book. Still lots of action to enjoy. Brilliant book from Kory as always
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC, which I read in one sitting. What I particularly enjoyed was that the author delved into the relationships between the characters. Also, we saw a softer side of Lou. She's still a kickass heroine but a more humane one. A great addition to the series!
I received an ARC copy and couldn't put it down. As always Kory delivers. The characters really come alive and reading this you 'see' the story better than if watching a film. Keep them coming please.
Just finished reading 'What Comes Around'. Each addition to this series is better than the last! A great story! I love how Lou's character seems more mellow specially with regard to K! All Lou's close fiends also are finding their own "bliss". I highly recommend this series to all.
