What do they say: opposites attract? I guess this is the case in this book. Fate was planned, but detoured when two young boys met. One was to end the world, the other boy was fated to stop him. But they made friends at a young age, and everything goes awry from there.
My favorite part was the boys growing up, and maybe even seduction school. Could you imagine if that were a real place? How cool. I don't want to give anything away, but the second half of the book was nothing I would have expected in a million years (or maybe 3000 years lol). It was full of surprises from beginning to end with some likeable characters, even if they were considered villians

THE DARKEST SWORD by Samantha Kroese is an engrossing, unputdownable novel with dark fantasy and horror themes.

Our main characters, Ashiyn and Soryn, are opposites who find salvation in each other. I love their dynamic, their powerful attraction, and how their bond forces them to question their viewpoints. Their relationship encourages growth and spawns questions. Do we follow in the footsteps of nature, of nurture, or do we carve our own paths? Do we propagate stigmas, or do we break through conditioning to define ourselves?

Kroese deftly details the blessings and curses of immortality and how we persevere through cruelty. Her story is rife with magical beings, enemies-to-lovers vibes, magic, torture, and brutality. At its heart, it’s a character-driven tale of clinging to hope through horror, of finding power through pain.

From the cover, you might expect this to be a relatively standard fantasy romance novel. However, it’s an interesting subversion of the genre. Be warned that this book is dark, and not just because of the violence. Many of the characters are about as evil as you can get, including the protagonist.
This was a bit too depressing for me. As a result, I didn’t necessarily enjoy the reading experience that much, but it was still very gripping. The chapters are pretty short and it’s paced well.

Heroes are great and all but how about a tasty antihero? The Darkest Sword has that and more! Ashiyn and Soryn were born as two opposing forces, but fate had other plans.

Despite, or perhaps because of his immortality, Ashiyn has suffered terrible abuses. He’s raised as a prince to a cruel master who raises him as a warlord.

Ashiyn wants more from his life and befriends Soryn. But their friendship becomes problematic and Ashiyn’s master intervenes, forcing the youngsters apart.

But Soryn is determined to be reunited with his friend, and from there things seem like they may work out. That is, until the titular sword becomes involved.

Give this book a try—the ending is one you won’t expect!
