Gothic horror lover Cassandra L. Thompson has been creating stories since she got her grubby little hands around a pen. When she is not busy managing a house full of feral children (human and canine) with her beloved husband, you can find her wandering around cemeteries, taking pictures of abandoned things, or in the library researching her latest obsession. She has a B.A. in History and an MLIS, but she ignores her degrees to focus on writing and running Quill & Crow Publishing House, both of which require copious amounts of coffee and Crows.

Poems to be relished...

In the introduction Cassandra Thompson, the editor, states that horror often gets overlooked as a genre in literature. Sadly, she is correct although it is interesting that Stephen King outsells Jonathan Franzen. This collection is a challenge to that view. Standing as a testament to not only good dark poetry but as good poetry period.
The authors in this collection tackle the poets view of love, nature, and self-examination as well as Dickinson, Longfellow, or Frost. One of my favorites, if I had to choose, is Vampiric Umbra by Ravven White. I won't quote it here, just tease you with it is a must read.
This one gets five stars, or should I say five full moons.

Delightful and surprising. Beautiful written word that leans into the macabre and gothic while making the words come to life! A short and magnificent read that makes me want to read more from these talented authors that make up this collective. Excited to read the next one!

An absolutely breathtaking collection of dark, melancholy poetry from a dizzying array of upcoming talent.

Sorrow and tragedy can be hauntingly beautiful, and that fact is demonstrated with consummate ease by the poets in this anthology.

I especially appreciated the inclusion of brief biographies of all of the contributors at the end of this book. It was nice to glean some of their inspiration.

Absolutely wonderful little collection. Recommended to all lovers of poetry.

Beloved
Remember when I was yours?
Me neither
Another wasted wish
Upon a burning star.
-Melanie Whitlock

She calls to him
And he sways towards her
Her siren song bewitching
There is no denying her
As he splashes into the water
Swimming towards the maiden
He doesn’t notice the others
An entire crew called Drowned,
by the beauty
Of their fantasy come true
- K.R. Wieland

I believe that there is a rare quality in certain people that love the darkness; captivated by its raw energy and mysterious substance. Similar to a tomb, this book of poems embalms our senses, enraptures us into a wild frenzy. For the poets they do not fear darkness or death or grief, for those are the topics that captivate their attention, and it is plainly seen in the myriad of poems divulging on the subject matter. If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or Poe's poem, it is certain you will enjoy this read. By far my favourites are the one posted above, but I also enjoyed "Vampiric Umbra" by Ravven White and "Melancholy" by Lynn-Cee Faulk.

NOTE: this review is for both Crow Calls Vol 1 & 2

Poetry has this talent to fill the void that regular stories cannot. The prose can often be abstract and lyrical, giving the reader room to interpret the emotions being expressed however they want it to be. They can be clear cut with a poignant message delivered in few lines, or paragraphs worth.

The poems expressed in these two volumes run the gamut. Bringing together a wide net of poets, there is bound to be something that will impact the reader. The styles are unique, the words and messages are beautiful and deadly.

There's no shortage of wordplay, of prose that dances eloquently on the tongue and page alike. This is a collection that demands rereads and will make you linger at certain passages. I absolutely adore these two collections.

I have to premise this review with a confession: I am typically not a fan of poetry.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of dark poetry. As with most poetry, some can be clear, and others can be abstract giving the person the ability to decipher the meanings themselves.
This is a dark and macabre collection of gothic poetry and as usual with everything I have read from Quill and Crow Publishing House, I was not disappointed.

I love these poems

A lovely mixture of themes, styles, and authors, all weaving darkness and beauty in rich words. I am already looking forward to the next edition. These poems are as evocative as they are profound. If you are a fan of gothic literature and poetry, you will find treasure here, if not, this may introduce you to creativity you might have missed. I highly recommend this book!

This is an astonishing collection of poetry that celebrates all that is dark, all that is grotesque or macabre. Each poet brings their own voice and pulls their own emotions out to blend with the words on the page. A definite recommendation.

A collection of poetry that leans fully into the gothic theme. Sometimes to the point of being a little unoriginal or melodramatic, but there were some winners in this anthology as well.
