FROM THE BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GOD AND DONALD TRUMP
64% of Americans believe cancel culture is a threat to their freedom.
This book will help you realize the seriousness of the battle before us and illuminate the present circumstance for the purpose of doing good-to bring hope. It will document what is happening in our country, how believers can respond, and why we can look expectantly to the future. This is the time for neither religious fatalism nor political inaction. No matter how bad things get in the culture or in government, the Bible is true and God has plans and purposes we don't understand-and in the end we win.
Things are chaotic in America. Liberal policies are advancing. A rash of executive orders appears to be moving the nation closer to socialism and a one-world government. And conservatives, including many Christians, are being censored as never before. There's even a term- cancel culture -which 64 percent of Americans believe poses a threat to their freedom, according to a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll. (Among Republicans, that figure is even higher at 80 percent.) The term applies to all conservatives who oppose the politically correct crowd, but it's part of a bigger effort to cancel Christianity and those who espouse biblical principles. It almost seems this is the beginning of the end and the Antichrist will appear at any time. You pick the cultural or political issue, and there likely is not even the semblance of widespread agreement. It seems that Christians are in an unprecedented season of fragmentation, potential division, and actual separation on many fronts. Instead of going forward, much of the church seems to be moving backward or standing still, waiting for what's next.
The body of Christ is a big, diverse family, and we must choose to cheer one another on rather than get into circular firing squads. We are called to advance on every front. This book will assess and affirm the different approaches playing out. The body needs clarity and unity- and has little of both right now. Wounded armies want hope, focus, and encouragement. This book will not throw anyone overboard who is standing for the truth in some positive way. Rather, it will allow readers to look critically at the various approaches vying for our allegiance and attention here in the middle of 2021.
In the course of this survey, we will find reason to affirm where people are fighting on the battlefield and validate the perspectives they bring. Featuring interviews with a cross section of leaders, this book will document what is happening in our country, how believers can respond, and why we can look to the future with hope. Even though things are bad, we must understand that conditions have been this bad or worse in the past and God always came through. He has plans and purposes we don't understand. Christians must not lose heart. We must stand strong and not be intimidated. We must pray, and we must believe God for a great awakening. No matter how bad things get in the culture or in government, the Bible is true and "all things work together for good to those who love God" (Rom. 8:28, MEV). That's because we are called according to His purpose. A purpose never goes in reverse. This book will reveal what that looks like in its various forms in the day in which we live. It gives a great handle for promoting unity and appreciation of one another when that is breaking down so badly elsewhere. Indeed, maybe the love Jesus spoke about that makes us recognizable to the world will be seen as this book illuminates the supernatural unity among people of very diverse opinions and approaches while pointedly addressing these various hot-button areas.
Strang sure has some cognitive issues shown by his inabilities to understand that freedom of speech doesn’t mean your free from consequences from what you say. If you start publicly voicing hurt on someone you’re probably in for a bad time. If a private company like Amazon or Facebook decide they don’t want to publish your thoughts then that’s their right. Whilst he does bring up the point of these companies being too big and having too much power he fails to see the irony that he really wants to censor others. If he truly wanted to fight against big tech he’d help push for breaking up the big companies and bringing back strong anti monopoly regulations to help remove their power but if he did that he’d be cancelling them so he can’t go that far.
Ultimately his arguments are never fully explained and his examples tend to be half told stories in an attempt to paint them in a positive light. It’s one giant polemic that only “Christians” are right and should be able to control what gets published. In a complete misreading of the bible, Strang calls his hate “Christian love” which I’m pretty sure Jesus would turn over his table in the market for.
The kind of ahistorical sophistry and polemics here are the marks of the modern grifter crank.
Absurd, yet it made me laugh at some of the ridiculousness of this book. E.g., when calling on his co-religionists to be more like the founding fathers, he specifically mentioned Thomas Paine by name. Is this the same Thomas Paine who wrote "The Age of Reason"? Who Teddy Roosevelt called, "a dirty little atheist"? It is absurd to the point of laughter to think that Paine would in any way endorse the personal christian god or the evangelical movement/it's influence on American politics. Much ranting and raving, straw men, boogeymen, fear mongering, hearsay, anecdotal, prophesying nonsense.
Still, the book was moderately well written and—as previously mentioned—it made me laugh out loud a couple of times at the sheer lunacy this guy was spouting.
This book comes from a Christian perspective, but covers a problem that is affecting all aspects of our culture: the belief that offensive views should be cancelled from the public square.
While it feels good in the moment to silence a voice you disagree with, this creates a massively unhealthy culture overall. And this only works as long as those in power believe exactly as you believe--oh, and are never wrong about anything.
It's not a new phenomenon. In fact, this has been the standard practice of governments for most of history. It's still standard practice in countries like China. It is however, a radical departure from the ideals of America.
It is largely happening on private platforms, making this more complicated since it's not a formal government initiative, like it is in China. But that doesn't make it less of a probelm.
The book does a good job outlining the problem, sharing specific examples in various arenas of culture, but is less specific on how we should respond.
A PROMINENT CHARISMATIC EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN COMPLAINS
I have difficulty in being very sympathetic with Strang’s complaints about PRIVATE companies like Facebook and Twitter banning certain types of ‘hate speech’ from their sites; how is this different from Stang’s Charisma magazine refusing to cover ministries that had ‘scandals’? If Amazon restricts or removes someone’s book, that doesn’t make the book UNAVAILABLE; neither Amazon (nor Barnes & Noble, for that matter) have any OBLIGATION to carry any particular book or author. If you choose to broadcast your controversial views, you should anticipate some opposition. And he places WAY too much confidence in what he ‘has been told’ (usually by persons he declines to identify) about the 2020 election, BLM, CRT, Antifa radicals in MAGA hats on January 6th, etc. (The persons being jailed for the invasion of the Capitol were TRUMP supporters, by their own admission, who used social media to organize their illegal actions; and---Mike Lindell’s and Dinesh D’Souza’s complaints notwithstanding---no actual EVIDENCE of significant voter fraud has ever been presented in a COURT.) Strang’s book makes me wonder: Would he have a problem with Amazon/Facebook/Twitter banning racist or anti-semitic language? (Or how about interracial marriages such as of Justice Clarence Thomas?)
He wrote in the Introduction to this 2021 book, “this book is about one of the most important, alarming, and life-impacting trends in America today. People call it ‘cancel culture.’ What this is, why it is happening, and where it may be taking us speaks profoundly and prophetically about where America is spiritually and culturally---and what the future holds for society, the church, and each of us personally… It is no secret that more and more Christians find themselves the targets of social media and corporate powers that delete them, block, them, or shadowban them in an effort to undermine their legitimacy and credibility… At present, liberal policies are advancing, and a secular culture is aggressively trying to eliminate all conservative thought that doesn’t agree with it. If secularists don’t like what you say or what you represent, they shut down your social media accounts, take away your ability to make a living, and tell you that you have no right to your opinion. The message… is simple: ‘Be quiet and go away.’ Soon, it may be harsher than that… What is happening? … Where does God fit into all this, and what does Scripture say about how to defend biblical truth in this hostile environment? These are some of the questions---and solutions---we will examine in this book.” (Pg. 1-3)
He continues, “we live with the… possibility that, with a one-world government, there will be nowhere to go if surveillance and artificial intelligence help to enforce total submission. Already, Chin has cameras with facial recognition and microphones for voice recognition seemingly everywhere. GPS tracks our electronic devices and where we drive. Could it be that with … self-driving cars, technology could be taken over by authorities to limit or control our travel? What if currency becomes totally digital? Or what is computer chips are implanted into our brains[?]… These are truly alarming science fiction scenarios now in the realm of fact. So far, no one is implanting computer chips into people’s brains or regulating travel through self-driving vehicles. But the growing possibility presents even more reason for us to stand up and sound the alarm before it does.
“I believe perhaps the greatest danger now is that believers will… leave the faith, or become part of the progressive wing of the evangelical community where they compromise the gospel and ‘go along to get alone.’ Worse, yet, believers could retreat… Retreat is the one thing we must not do. We were… called to advance on every front… Many believers are advancing and taking ground for the kingdom in a time when the kingdom seems to be retreating… That is in large part what this book is about---seeing what wise, well-regarded, and proven Christian leaders are saying about the challenges we are living through, especially in the face of cancel culture, and how to overcome them… Featuring interviews with a cross section of leaders, this book documents what is happening in our country, how believers can respond, and why we can look to the future with hope…” (Pg. 4-8)
He notes, “Amazon banned several books around the time it updated its rules on hate speech, but it did not say how the banned books contained what the company deemed hate speech… Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube aren’t much different. When they remove a video of post, they don’t always acknowledge the censorship or let the accused know what exactly it did ‘wrong.’ The removal of Christian and conservative voices from major platforms happens in silence, often leaving little proof that the book or video was censored… In most cases these cancellations occur without any public notice, and frustrated victims are left to suffer alone.” (Pg. 11)
He reports, “In early January 2021 something happened that I believed would never… happen in this country… tens of thousands of Christians and conservatives were suddenly---stunningly---barred from participating on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms. The Big Tech companies, including Apple, Google, and Amazon, then … muscled a conservative social media company—Parler---out of the market… (It was reborn later, under new owners, as a compliant, brainwashed child of the new Left.)… The victims of this accelerated deplatforming weren’t merely those in corporate boardrooms; they were normal people, respected journalists, researchers, and leaders of various kinds who, only months earlier, fell within the mainstream of American politics.” (Pg. 18-19)
He explains, “I’ve heard the criticism that all groups censor and cancel in some degree. Some Christian groups have been known to shun those considered heretics… Even at ‘Charisma,’ the magazine I founded, a few ministries that had high-profile scandals are no longer covered in print or online. But that only means our company is picking and choosing what to cover, as we do with any story. We are not deprogramming anyone. Someone else can write about those ministries, or they can report on themselves. But we aren’t imposing our will that certain people are to be banned altogether and enforcing it with the power of a gigantic corporation.” (Pg. 25)
He states that “[Mike] Lindell and others claim to have examined evidence of massive voting irregularities that tipped the scale toward Biden after it appeared Trump would win. I haven’t witnessed what Lindell claims to have seen, but the examples I have heard about are very concerning to me and worth investigating… in 2021… many conservatives, myself included, believe the election was stolen, and both by a wholesale changing of laws and by voting irregularities.” (Pg. 32-33)
He acknowledges, “COVID-19 became a political bludgeon even before it led to mass lockdowns… leftists… tried to use the pandemic---as they try to use everything---as a means of control people… COVID-19 caught up with me in December 2020 when I flew… to attend an important conference… I came home with COVID-19… [I] went into quarantine for ten days… My personal experience was very mild… so I’ve had a hard time understanding why people panicked over this virus… I know only four people personally who died with COVID-19, and each was over 80-years old… One of my part-time staff members … went to lunch with other staff members and gave the virus to several more, a couple of whom ended up in the hospital. I am grateful everyone recovered.” (Pg. 46-47) [He doesn’t tell us whether he was vaccinated, or not.]
He interviews “Rob McCoy, a brave pastor and former elected mayor of an influential city in Southern California [Thousand Oaks],” who reports, “behind CRT [Critical Race Theory] is a totally different motivation that has nothing to do with race or even gender… Atheists clothed in critical race theory ‘don’t want a one-world government; they want absolute and total chaos… it is demonic. [The devil] … wants the church destroyed. He wants all morality removed.’ … it’s going to be ‘just absolute anarchy if they get their way because they’re defunding the police. They want to create as much riot as possible… under the guise of social justice.’” (Pg. 79-80)
Strang continues, “Those who hold to this narrative were ready when George Floyd was killed; they were waiting and organized, and they sprang into action almost immediately when the videos of this death went viral. That’s not to say much of the reaction by ordinary Americans wasn’t spontaneous. Everyone who saw the videos should have been repulsed and angered. But there are stories of rioters being bused into urban areas, and the rioting that followed the release of the videos was almost immediate. Don’t tell me that that this wasn’t planned in advance!” (Pg. 96-97) [BLM has been ‘ready’ since Trayvon Martin’s death in 2012.)
He states, “on January 6, 2021, when the US Senate was voting to confirm electoral votes for Joe Biden in the presidential election (that many, including me, believe was stolen), huge crowds converged on Washington… But these Americans… were portrayed by the media and leftist politicians as radicals coming to overthrow the government. Unfortunately, some were violent, and sadly, five lives were lost. But I’m told by friends … who attended that January 6 rally, that … all he saw ‘was worship and prayer surrounding the Capitol grounds---a sea of patriots who … suddenly started singing the National Anthem in unity.’ I have been told that radicals, wearing ‘Make American Great Again’ hats to blend into the crowd, were the ones breaking windows in the Capitol to make supporters of Donald Trump look bad. I can’t verify that, but that’s partly because no one will investigate… I believe the unrest on January 6, while not justified, could have been trumped up…” (Pg. 97-98)
He asks, “Is it possible to forestall cancel culture---and even civil war---by emphasizing ministries of compassion and justice[?]… Or would this emphasis just make us dupes of a leftist state… ‘useful idiots,’ at the service of an expanding of an anti-Christian state?... Is majoring on compassion ministry a form of spiritual leadership or the white flag of surrender?” (Pg. 148)
He recalls, “Over the years, I’ve received prophecies that were stunningly correct. The late Paul Cain … gave me a public prophecy … [he] said God has had a calling on my life since that relatively young age [14]… Another personal prophecy, by Marilyn Hickey in the 1970s, when Charisma was struggling to survive financially… encouraged my wife and me because she said God had put his hand on our little magazine… For that reason and many others, my ears are open when proven prophetic voices such as Rick Joyner, Lou Engle, Bob Jones, John Paul Jackson, and many other godly people say God has shown them that a massive move of the Holy Spirit is on the way.” (Pg. 164)
He includes, “I encourage you to stand up, speak up, and push back at the cancel culture bullies before it’s too late. But don’t just target the secular, godless bullies; call out complacency and sin in the church… the problems in secular society accelerated because the church has not been the church for the past several generations.” (Pg. 179)
Some people will LOVE this book; for the rest of us, we’d prefer that Strang renounce his fealty to Trump, and focus on the message of Jesus about God…
Was going to give this a 3 for being more political than spiritual, however with a few chapters remaining, Strang took a turn in the right direction and showed that the recent attempts to silence people's views and class all politically inconvenient views to those on the left as "misinformation" is indeed a larger problem than just political- its very arguable demonically inspired and an attack on God's truth itself.
Strang offers a well timed call against passivity and towards boldly yet graciously sharing the truth with others, not backing down when the barbs gets thrown.
He draws an accurate parallel between modern cancel culture and the hostility the OT prophets faced when they warned of God's judgment, and similarly uses this parallel to show that sharing God's truth will always be met with backlash, but we need to love others enough to tell them the truth regardless.
It is focused on the scene in America, but all Christians in the West would benefit from this message I think - we need to be aware.
Very informative read. Even if you know what is going on in this country right now, there are things in here you probably never heard of until now. It's alarming and shocking. Really opened my eyes to a lot of things happening in the U.S. right now.
I picked up this book at a thrift store, unsure of what to expect. It started off decently, highlighting examples of cancel culture in the context of the 2020 election and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the book feels slightly outdated—it would have benefited from more current examples. That said, there were some serious issues. The author's theology is, frankly, bizarre. He calls on all Christians to prophesy, speak in tongues, and even walk on live scorpions. He also references several false prophets, including Paula White, which was disappointing. The part I appreciated most was the author's call to action. He encourages readers to boycott products made in China (a great idea, by the way) and stop shopping at Target and other liberal-leaning stores. Overall, it’s a strange and often dull read, but the call to action is compelling. Despite its flaws, the author’s genuine devotion to Christ is evident.
