The Wise And The Wasted

Rate this book
“Wisdom may belong to the wise,
but the journey belongs to the wasted.
Always wandering,
hopelessly dreaming
faltering, learning,
forever seeking.
And darling,
if this is not life,
then what is?”
A passional mother, shielding her child from an archetypal society. An estranged father, disappearing without a warning. A loyal lover, struggling to embrace his true identity. A free-spirited artist, facing his insecurities. A curious daughter, set to find her own trajectory.
What happens as they set out on their own journeys? What happens when their paths intertwine?
Following the novel in verse narrative, the book carefully follows the journey and graph of each character. The story delves into current cultural conversations including mental health, sexual abuse, displacement as well as timeless themes of love, passion and art. The poetically weaved verses, subtly impel the readers to have more perspectives than just one and ultimately follow their hearts.

A heart that breaks, learns to heal, and that is stronger than the one that knows no pain

There are few books that come your way with the sole intention of soothing your mind and putting things in perspective and I would irrevocably say that THE WISE AND THE WASTED, did that for me.

Narrated in novel in verse form, The Wise and the Wasted seamlessly portrays the story of a conventional mother trying to shield her child from the dread of the world, an artist on their path to leave an imprint in the universe and an inquisitive daughter exploring the possibilities of her life.

I can't be prejudiced between melancholy and rapture.
They work in tandem.
One following the other.
One watching the other's move like a forlorn lover.
Capsizing each other,unawares

'The wise and the wasted' let me revel in poetry that seeks a reader's heart out with the truthfulness of it's words. The floundering mind of a child at the crisp of life, the creative and seeking mind of an artist and the lovelorn soul of a mother is immaculately captured through Chopra's poetry. The fact that the voices are so distinct and honed and yet you can relate to every character as they go through a plethora of emotions, makes the book stand out!

Don't wait for your prince or a happily ever after, "cause you'll be on your own when the night gets darker

The Wise and the Wasted
By Chandni Chopra

This is not a typical fiction or a poetry book. It has a unique trait about it and that is, it is a novel in verse!

I can vouch for how much time and hardwork it must have taken the author to inculcate all her thoughts and weave this story kn the verse form which again is not in plain freestyle but rhymic classic styled that I prefer more.

This is a story about Hireath. The term Hireath if some of you know means a deep yearning for a place one calls home. She is one of those who are real seekers and learners for life. This story is divided into five parts: Hireath, Metamorphosis, Voyage, Reclaim, Homecoming. Each of these sections comprise of several poems that paint a new turn in her life. Sprinkled with emotions and meaning, this story speaks of a mother who tried to protect her little daughter from the hypocritic society, a father who was unavailable and later left them leaving a hole in the child's life, an artist facing inner conflicts and a daughter who tries to find her truth.

The story starts with the mother witnessing her beautiful little child growing up. You get a new freedom when you loose everything. Join her life where she embarks on a journey to find her truth. A story for ones who are bohemian at heart and maverick enough walking a path to find themselves.

After reading this book, I choose to be wasted because a wise person is always careful and seldom lives life, but a wasted one makes mistakes, takes on new adventures, learns, unlearn, and reaches heights.
.
As Chandi quotes “Wisdom may belong to the wise but the journey, belongs to the wasted.” She convinced me.
.
And here I am to convince you all. You must read this book to experience all the emotions hidden in short beautiful verses.
.
This is a novel written in verse, it's short and crisp. It takes you on a journey of a girl, who grew up in a protected but broken family. She truly loves her mother and desires her father to love them back. She follows her heart, opens herself to love, heartbreak, and moving on. She finally learns to heal.
.
She observes people around her keenly and describes beautifully how they feel.
.
Through her journey of life, the book also touches many sensitive social issues such as sexual harassment, female foeticide, rape, etc. It’s fiction but feels more than real.

Ever read books where you understood each verse couldn’t paint out the meaning as a whole due to different POVs and timelines ? Well, that’s what the first part was for me . They difference is that they all fell into place to entwine with each other to bring out a beautifully scripted story .

‘The Wise and the Wasted ‘is the second story in the form of poetic verse Ive read ( first being The Black Flamingo ).
This book has the background of a single overprotective mother, a deserted father, a lover struggling with his identity, an insecure artist and a wanderlust daughter.

They all have their backgrounds and at some point their liver interwine providing us different perspectives on love, abuse, loneliness, creation and passion. The verses were heavy and I won’t recommend to beginners .
Whereas if you are a lover of the genre, this book is a treat for you !

To be honest, this was the first time I was reading a novel in verse. It was a profound and a very relatable book. Many many poems touched my heart, as I felt the author was speaking to me through her words. Many a times I felt as if she wrote what I wanted to say, but I couldn't find words for.

It might seem as if the poems are random, but each one is connected to the other. You just have to read them with all your attention. Many a times they speak to you, as if silently supporting you and letting you know that you're not in this situation alone.

It is a brilliantly written book, that calls out to you often. Allows you to introspect and answers many a questions.

Kudos! :)

I’ve been following the poet for a while and I love the images she weaves with her words. While reading this book I was trapped in her world. Such a beautifully written, engaging book. A perfect gift for poetry lovers and a must have for your personal home library!
