Dragon's Mate #1

Family of Fire

Rate this book
Two clans of dragon shifters – the noble Somervilles and the warrior Hoskins – have kept an uneasy truce for generations.

But times have changed and the Hoskins clan has agreed to train young Morgan Somerville. Specifically, Lew has been told that he’ll be training Morgan.

Lew doesn’t expect to like the stuck-up Morgan at all, but he can’t help being attracted to him. And when Morgan turns out to be not so stuck-up after all, Lew is in serious danger of losing his heart.

Morgan was afraid to be left alone with a strange clan after the stories he’s been told about power and war, but Lew is always so kind, and he’s sure the Hoskins clan isn’t as bad as everyone said. Soon, Morgan’s biggest fear isn’t being left with Lew, it’s being summoned home again. But his training won’t last forever.

Can Lew and Morgan trust the bond they feel between them? And will they act on that bond and claim one another before it’s too late?

Times are indeed changing, there is danger approaching from the outside world and two dragons are about to find their fated mates.

My new series DRAGON’S MATE is everything I love about fantasy, shifters, fated mates and happily ever afters. Sweet and funny and steamy, what more could you want?

Warning: contains explicit scenes.

I was in the mood for dragons and stumbled across this book. It's an interesting concept that underlies this series, even if unfortunately you don't learn much about the world in this first part, which is apparently divided into hostile dragon clans and other mythical creatures.
Unfortunately, it drags on a bit and I had to skip over the sentences a couple of times until it became more exciting again.
What bothered me more, however, was that the many things not addressed prolonged everything unnecessarily but then there wasn't really much time between the two main characters.
There's a beautiful scene on the beach that really would have been perfect to give Morgan and Lew time to get to know each other, but then they're interrupted by annoying cousins. And this happens all the time. Lew's family is interesting and I would be curious to know more, but I really miss the companionship of the characters.

I’d known it was him, even in his dragon form. He just looked like Lew. And he was so incredibly beautiful with his dark grey scales that faded to a much lighter shade underneath his belly. A little part of me wanted him to lay on his back so I could rub it, not that I’d ever tell him that. 🐉💗🐉

More of this would have been good, or rather I was waiting the whole time for this thought to be implemented in a scene. 😩
I think I'll read more of this series, eventually, but it's not a priority.

MM Romance
Fated Mates-dragon shifters
2.5 Stars ⭐️

This was just free so I grabbed it and it was a bit annoying tbh. I love the idea of fated mates especially how they just know from the first time they talk, touch etc that they are mates but these two were so damn idiotic and oblivious that I wanted to bash my head against the wall. Morgan was extremely innocent so I understood why he was maybe confused but for Lew to not understand what his dragon was telling him just made me stabby. So there was all this really annoying inner dialogue in both their POVs wondering why they felt things like jealousy, possessiveness, vulnerability etc to the point I almost DNF’d this thing but it’s so hard to DNF books I own even if I got them for free.

Lew and Morgan are both dragon shifters from different clans. Lew is a part of the Hoskins clan and a curaidh dragon and Morgan is from the Somerville clan and a uasal dragon. Curaidh’s are warriors and train others to protect their own castles so when Morgan is sent by his clan to learn to fight, he is paired up with Lew. They have this instant attraction to each other but Morgan is from a clan of dragons that are very formal and standoffish which has ruined Morgan’s self confidence and Lew is just a moron who flirts with everyone but can’t see what’s right in front of his face. Curaidh and uasal dragons are also not very fond of each other and it’s considered forbidden for them to mate.

I liked this enough that I want to read the next one because the couple it’s about really interest me but this book’s couple were kind of boring. The sex scenes were pretty hot but there was a lot of drama and not just because their union would be forbidden but other external factors that just had no reason to be there. All the extra crap made this book dragggg and when I saw on goodreads it was over 400 pages I wanted to die. Strangely enough though the kindle book is only 330 pages so I guess it’s a typo on here?

My biggest complaint about this book wasn’t the couple or the OTT drama but the fact I felt like I was missing something. The way this was written made me feel like I was supposed to know wtf uasals and curaidhs were before I was told. Even after it was explained a bit, I still felt like I was missing important information yet this is the first book in the series and I didn’t see a prequel anywhere. I absolutely hate starting a new series and feeling out of the loop. I’m not sure if it’s just this author’s writing style or what but it didn’t work for me.

The other issue was the spelling and grammar. This book has a disclaimer about using British English but there were lots of the wrong words being used like I’m pretty sure “waking” is not the same thing as “walking”. Same with “who” vs “wo” among other words and it took me completely out of the story because sentences made no sense. Here’s an example:
”I set off for the cliff path quickly.  No way did I want to get stuck behind Lew waking up there, with his arse right in front of my face.”

The other thing is my problem and not the book but Morgan is the name of my sister in law so having it as one of the main characters was a tad off putting at times but like I said that’s on me and I didn’t hold it against the book.

The reason the couple of the next book intrigued me though was because it’s going to be enemies to lovers second chance and Dane is so possessive over his mate already that I just know it’s going to be explosive. There is more than meets the eye with them and I’m just really excited to read it. I can only hope the editing is better and it doesn’t bore me to tears. 😂

Thankfully there is no mpreg in this book and I’m pretty sure for the entire series. Every time I read the word “uasal” I kept seeing “nasal” and it made me laugh. 😂

I'm not rating since I was not able to finish this book. Picked it from KU but the writing style did not work for me.
I got as far as 40% after which I threw the towel in. This book had all the elements that should have pulled me in but somehow I was bored and could not keep my attention or care for either MC.
The juvenile "he likes me, he likes me not" and the misunderstanding with the resulting jealousy/cool behavior without attempting to discuss matters like adults is a pet peeve of mine.
But the biggest issue for me was the writing stile that did not engage any of my emotions.

I didn't know what to expect from this series, other than dragons and romance. This exceeded my expectations. The world building is clear yet leaves more to be learned. And Morgan and Lew make for a lovely couple. I'm actually pretty excited to get to the next books! So glad I have the box set!

This read a bit like an omegaverse setting but without mpreg and had a great potential touch-starved sad boi. All in all, it was too long and had me bored. Note to self: start looking at how long books are before starting them.

Quotes
"...my dragon hummed inside me in satisfaction. It like to see him in our clothes, marked as ours." (Loc 521)

"Shit," he said again, and yanked me forward. My whole body went stiff, not sure what he was doing. It took me several long seconds to realise that he wasn't hurting me. He was holding me in his arms and pressing me against his warm chest. His face was buried against my neck and, slowly, I relaxed into the hug. I couldn't remember the last time I'd had a hug. In fact, I couldn't remember ever having a hug, though I was sure I must have had one once." (Loc 680)

This book was amazing...a great dragon's mate read. Hope Bennett, in my opinion, wrote a captivating story about the misinterpretation of a person's behavior doesn't necessarily mean they are like that on the inside.

The Hoskins clan had agreed to take on the Somerville clan's eldest son, Morgan, a usal dragon, to train to be a fighter to protect his clan, and Lew was to be his trainer. At first, Morgan held the attitude of a snob, but deep down inside that wasn't Morgan's true nature, but he could not display those emotions he held inside. No one from the Hoskins knew anything about the young man's home life, and that there was harsh discipline if this father did not approve. That was just the way it was at Somerville Castle.

Lew had grown up in a loving family atmosphere, had been in the Fife Army, and was a curaidh dragon, curaidh dragons used to be protectors for the Somerville, but they no longer do that.
Lew had experienced a normal life with his family, the opposite of Morgan.

Unknowingly they were Fated mates, the two wanted to get together, of course not telling each other, but Morgan never thought he had a chance with Lew and he had obligations to his family preventing him from even thinking about it. Plus, they could never be together because Morgan's father would prevent that.

The Somerville clan leader, Morgan's father, hated the Hoskins clan. I would highly recommend this book, I haven't read any of the others, but I just bought book 2 to find out more about another very angry dragon in their family.

3,5☆ - cute and I loved Lew and Morgan and his family 🥰❤️
Buuut I don't like the misscommunication trope. Guuuuys, talk with each other and Morgan didn't show his dragon?! 😭🤔🤨
I don't like the showdown too because it was soo lame, boring, anticlimatic. I think Hope Bennett wasted potential here. Come on Morgans Father?! He could have been an amazing, douchebag, evil dragon and think about crazy, mad Brandon... 👀😭😂
I saw right through the "OMG" moment. Sorry too easy. Nice try 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Thoroughly enjoyable with enough steam to make you blush.

I normally don’t go for dates mates/insta love stories but this one really made my week. Seeing Lew and Morgan fall for each other and just be lovable buffoons as they have misunderstandings galore was a treat. Even though it played on the miscommunication trope it didn’t feel forced or too annoying like some stories and I think the resolution that led to them confessing was done so well!

I did think some of the plot points were a little bit obvious and the jealous lover scorned could have been explored in more depth. I also think he could have had more of an underhanded and explored villain arc as (especially with the climactic events at the end) it felt a little rushed and I would have wanted to see the frustration build, like in the earlier chapters, so that the overall redemption/climax/happy ending has more of an impact!

One think this book had in spades was great characters. Not only did we get to see the layers of our two main heroes but also the other members of the Hoskins clan. Morgan is my favourite character type, a closed off sweetheart just waiting to be able to bloom into their best self and him having Lewis being a fierce bamboozled protector just made me melt. Nadia, Nana and Gramps also deserve a special mention - they felt so good and I want to be part of their family too! Not seeing them in all the chapters really speaks volumes of the authors talents as I felt as though I could understand them almost as much as the main heroes.

I cannot wait to read about Dane and Soren in the next book - I think this is a series I am not going to be able to put down.

5* from me.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It was actually the second book I wanted to read, but I figured I'd start at the beginning because context, right? Meet all the characters and the two families, get some worldbuilding and background, develop some of that lore. And the synopsis for this first instalment still sounded interesting enough to delay just starting with the second one. I mean, what's not to love about dragon shifters with fated mates from two clans with a... somewhat turbulent history between each other, shall we say.

But unfortunately, the author doesn't really manage to fully deliver. Or at least, they certainly didn't live up to my hopes and expectations. The foundation was good, and as I said, the synopsis and plot layout is definitely intriguing. It's the execution that really leaves much to be desired.

The writing has quite a few mistakes and is underdeveloped, and I personally didn't enjoy it; the worldbuilding is barebones and left me with a lot of basic questions throughout that I felt really should have been answered; the training that Morgan is ostensibly visiting for is absent except when needed for the purposes of plot (why couldn't he have just been an ambassador or emissary to try and encourage relations between clans instead? Oh, wait.); the so called p0litics are so badly handled that it all just comes across as childish; the two MCs are fine but hardly captivating or attention-grabbing.

Morgan (our visitor) is quite young so a lot of his behaviour is more or less understandable, or at least forgivable, plus he's on the backfoot being the outsider. But Lew is over 100 years old (he spent a century with the Fife Army - which, what is that? Is it made up of dragons? Other paranormals? Mixed in with humans? Is the paranormal known? Who knows, not me) but he reads as barely older than Morgan instead of someone who has age and experience on his side. I found myself starting to skim at around about 40%, wanting to know where the plot was going but not interested enough in the fine details or their relationship.

I still love the sound of the second book but I can't bring myself to read it written like this. I won't be exploring the rest of this series.

Let me start the review by saying that I enjoyed the first book to the next two books in the series. And the review is about the whole series as I read it in a sequence.
The outline of the story and the world-building is very good. The characters are somewhat well-established.
What is dragging the book down? Well, it is the dialogue and the subplots. Furthermore, the timing of the event happening in the book makes no sense.
I strongly believe that this book had potential but unfortunately the narrative was a drag.

***𝙵𝚊𝚖𝚒𝚕𝚢 𝚘𝚏 𝙵𝚒𝚛𝚎***

I liked the first book, Lew and Morgan are my favorite couple in this series. Morgan gives all cold vibes but he is a sweetheart whose life has been controlled and ruled by his father. Lew is an honest and brave warrior. He is protective and cares a lot for Morgan.

***𝙷𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝙵𝚒𝚛𝚎***

Dane and Seren were introduced in the first book, Dane was rejected by Seren and heartbroken for years. Even though his heart was in pain he always was there for Seren to protect him. Seren had a reason for his rejection but now he yearns to take control of his life. It's a second-chance romance and hence I can't say much.

***𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝙿𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚎***

The third book is about Prince and Darren. Prince is the cousin of many cousins introduced in this series. Darren is a security consultant who is also a gargoyle. He is a headstrong, career-oriented workaholic whereas Prince is young, sweet, and a bit messy.

Overall it was average for me, low on angst. You good give it a chance if you love dragon shifter and fated mate kinda story. It did have a few amazing moments.

Family of Fire is a warm, magical, and emotionally rich start to what promises to be a swoon-worthy series. Hope Bennett delivers a fresh take on dragon shifters with her DRAGON’S MATE series, kicking things off with the unexpected bond between Morgan Somerville and Lew Hoskins two dragons from rival clans caught in the crossfire of duty, desire, and destiny.

What I truly enjoyed about this book was how Bennett balances world-building with character-driven storytelling. The centuries-old tension between the noble Somervilles and the warrior-like Hoskins gives the story an edge, but it never overshadows the tender, slow-burn romance developing at the core. Watching Lew's initial assumptions about Morgan unravel into something softer and more meaningful felt authentic not rushed or overly dramatic. The chemistry between them? Instant spark with a slow build, exactly how I like it.

Morgan’s vulnerability, especially his fears of being abandoned in a hostile environment, hit hard. His emotional journey from guarded uncertainty to genuine affection for Lew is written with care. And Lew? He's the kind of gruff yet golden character you can't help but root for. His protective instincts toward Morgan tug at the heartstrings.

The fated mates trope can sometimes feel overdone, but Bennett brings a sweetness and sincerity that makes it feel new again. Add in a few steamy moments, a touch of humor, and the looming sense of external danger, and you’ve got a page-turner with real heart.

Mating for power or love

A really sweet opening book to this world of dragons, with a couple in a slow burn romance because they just can't seem to actually communicate with one another.

Morgan is a royal class dragon and Lew is a warrior class. Once the warriors protected the royals, but something has changed in the world and now each clan protects their own. As such Morgan's family sends him to be trained by Lew so he can learn from a warrior. The two are physically attracted upon meeting but in every other way they spark and clash. Morgan has been trained to hide his emotion, speak down to others, and expect social retaliation for any mistakes. Lew on the other hand has an open and loving family, but he is a bit blind to society double speak. As such the two spend a lot of time completely misunderstanding each other while they work on training. It made for many unexpected missteps and even some interesting misunderstandings, but it was all as they learned how to truly talk to one another.

The Hoskins clan of dragons is large and varied and they played a big part in Morgan and Lew coming together. Not only are there unconventional but true matings within their clan, but they believe in love and choice for their family members. There is sure to be other great stories about further family members that will make up this exciting dragon series!

This book is really good and a very promising opening to the series. I found the author’s writing to be extremely compelling and quite fun and found myself laughing out loud several times, despite the dark and deep themes of the book.

The romance in it is great as well and I loved both MCs. It has the perfect amount of angst and miscommunication, balanced at the perfect point with them being open and getting together and then dealing with obstacles together.

Morgan is a sweet dragon who has been emotionally abused by his father who is basically a tyrant. He has been forced to fold into himself, constantly hiding how he feels behind a blank mask for his own protection.
When he is sent to the Hoskins castle to learn how to fight, he founds himself absolutely amazed by how different life is over there. They aren’t forced to wear formal wear to dinner, they can have fun and play games, they are informal with each other and even with their Elder who is respected and obeyed but not feared. They are a family. And, to add to all of that, Lew is part of that family and Morgan’s trainer.

Lew is the best fighter in the Hoskins clan, which is a clan of fighter dragons. When Morgan arrives to be trained by him, he can’t get his eyes off him.

Turns out, these two dragons are fated mates.

Beautiful story, I really recommend it.

A beautiful story of awareness, acceptance, and love. Family of Fire has dragons, villains, magic, kids, loving relatives, spice, and it has humor infused throughout. I was captivated. Morgan is so adorable, and Lew is too, in a rough warrior way. Together they are dynamic. All of the characters were well-written, and the secondary characters enhanced Morgan and Lew’s story. I am intrigued by several of them and excited to read their stories.

I enjoy when a series includes books that are connected or have characters that appear in multiple books. I really like it when there is a theme or an issue that flows throughout the series, especially when the author doesn’t throw in a cliffhanger. I was delighted that Family of Fire covers Morgan and Lew’s primary journey and leads the reader perfectly into the second book in the series.

Surprisingly sweet

At the start of this book, I wasn't expecting much. Slowly the author surprised me with this interesting family and unique world that parallels our own. I really enjoyed it. I also highly recommend the short story the author wrote Morgan's Magic that occurs pretty much immediately after this book. It explains a few things that confused me.

There was only one thing that bothered me and it was enough to give 4 stars instead of 5. Unfortunately, I can't mention it here because it would be a HUGE spoiler. For those who read it, I feel like the big conflict at the end was completely glossed over which seemed strange with this close-knit family. Perhaps there will be an explanation to why that was in the next book?

Morgan and Lew's story was very sweet, if somewhat slower than I anticipated. A true slow burn romance, both characters are adorably naïve where relationships are concerned. The story provides some great world building and introduces us to the author's world of paranormal, with what I see as implied castes in the dragon world, recently broken and leading to some creative chaos when the two dragon clans interact.
I loved both characters. Once the story picks up it has some good pacing, definitely some angst and inner turmoil and action. Oh and some nice MM spice.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First impressions can intrigue. Lew and Morgan are challenged from the very beginning. They are thrown into circumstances not necessarily of their choosing. There are misconceptions and miscommunications. The family is a delight and the personalities are a hoot. The world our characters find themselves in is a bit different than the majority of stories. First impressions don't always leave good lasting impressions, but our guys try to work through them. Good story. Lots of action and surprises. The supporting characters are fun adn keep the story strong. Nicely done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book by this author I’ve read.
I really enjoyed Morgan and Lew’s story, because who doesn’t like hurt/comfort mixed with dragons?

Morgan’s story was so interesting and sad, his family sucks and he doesn’t know how typical families should interact.

Lew’s background was equally interesting, coming from such a large family, I really enjoyed reading his interactions with each family member.

I also enjoyed the world building, how the descriptions of the different species of dragons were explained and how they don’t get along.

Overall this story was intriguing, and I really enjoyed it!

Fun!

This is the first time reading this author. Good solid story, well laid out plot with drama thrown in throughout to keep it interesting. First book in the series, and it sets up a good foundation to future books. Good surrogate family type of feel. A hint of predictability in the climax. For a vacation into the world of dragons, this is a great lighthearted HEA. My only critique is that upon seeing the unique classifications, I was unable to pronounce them, and that was a bit annoying, since they use these classifications throughout the book. It detracts from the flow of the book when my brain has to guess at how to say a word.

I will give this book a 4/5. This is the story of Morgan and Lew. Both men are dragon shifters. Morgan is from a noble class and Lew is from a warrior class. Morgan is sent to Lee’s family to learn how to fight and protect himself. But the two men fall in love. Morgan’s father is happy about that. Morgan and Lew have to work on their relationship and determine if what they want is worth the trouble it will cause. I liked the a toon in book. I wish there had been more. I feel that there could have been a little more explanation of other characters. I guess that will happen in other books.

Overall, this book was pretty good. Good lord though, both Lew and Morgan are SO OBLIVIOUS for a good portion of the book! I mean, I know Morgan was raised to hide his emotions/feelings, but I can’t believe that Lew was totally in the dark about other people, and then it was really obvious that the “twist” was going to happen!

This book was a smidge too long for my taste, there were parts that could have been more succinct. That said, the last part I was on the edge of my seat so overall recommended. Just try not to hurt your eyes from rolling too much lol

Morgan and Lew are pretty cute together, and the narrative was interesting, especially as we could see that they had both been pining for the other with no idea that their feelings were reciprocated.

I’m not the biggest fan of the insta-love trope but at least there was a well explained reason for it here.

It really did feel like Lew and Morgan were well fleshed out characters, and I quite enjoyed Nadia as well. I do wish we’d seen more of Brendan’s motives behind his actions though, as things did seem to escalate quite quickly.

I think Hope Bennett will become one of my must-have authors. I like the writing style and how sweet the stories are. While I had read some of the shorter books by the author, I hadn't tried this series yet. I quite liked it and can't wait to read about Dane and Seren. That tension! It was a bit too long and drawn out, but considering it is the first in a series and some world building had to be made, nothing could be done about that. I still enjoyed the story and its sweetness. I am always up for fated mates, dragons and magic, so this was right up my alley :)

This is the story of Morgan and Lev. Please read the trigger warnings. It is the first book in the Dragon's Mate series. I absolutely love this book and I cannot wait for the next installment. It is written wonderfully with amazing characters. The story is flowing and have a realness yo it which make for a quick and easy read. Loved the chemistry between them and how they grew and developed their relationship. Definitely recommend.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.

Lew and Morgan are adorable. While both had heard of the legends of curaidh and uasal pairings, as it hadnt happened in many years, people believed it to be a myth.
Morgans people are very private, thry hide things from other clans and eachother, leaning that Morgans magic was a surprise to everyone. While the big bad warrior of the Hoskins clan, is actually a big marshmallow, who would do anything to avoid hurtimg his family and mate.

Family of Fire by Hope Bennett was an amazing book. I really enjoyed the dynamics of the different dragon families and the different type of dragons. I can't say I could pronounce them but it was interesting nonetheless.

I really like the main characters and the side characters of Lew's family. Lew and Morgan were hot together. And I love the age gap - the huge age gap between the two and how Morgan was an innocent until Lew.

Two dragon clans are in an uneasy truce so when one is told he needs to go to the other clan, he is worried. They are not happy at being told they need to look after him but it soon becomes clears they have an attraction to each other. Can it be a match made in heaven? Will either clan try to stop it? Can this be the start of a much easier relationship between the clans? See just how it will all go
