Wow, I wish I was this wise when I was 26 years old! Country singer Laura Alaina uses her personal experiences to help show others how to treat yourself well and grow through your hardships. She gives excellent advice about self-talk and reminds us that we sometimes treat ourselves worse than we would ever treat anybody else. She talks about growing through breakups, heartaches, and her father's alcoholism. She shares the tragic death of her stepfather and how she grew even closer to God through it all. She talks about being yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin.

I loved the chapter where she explains abusive, gaslighting behavior she experienced in a bad relationship and a list of signs to look for so you will know what's happening. This will be really helpful to women of all ages.

I would advise everyone to read this book because there are lessons in here for all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This is such a great book that I would highly recommend for all women/young ladies, but especially so for college aged women & women in their early 20s. Lauren has so many good, good nuggets of wisdom in here that she’s learned through life experiences. She shares so many reminders of keeping priorities in your life, what they should look like, what healthy relationships look like, and how to see yourself the way God made you to be. It is on the shorter side, but I didn’t mind. I definitely recommend the audio. She did a great job narrating it!

I, like Lauren, find a lot of my value in what I can do for others. Trouble is I often give (or promise) too much of myself and then cycle in self-loathing as I struggle to build back up my inner-well.

Getting Good at Being You totally deserves 5 stars! As a huge fan of Lauren Alaina, I was really excited to find a book that she wrote. She has so much wisdom and is so passionate about the Lord. I loved learning her testimony and teachings. She talks about loving yourself because God made you just how He wanted you, and I know she truly means it! Thanks to Lauren, I totally believe it!

Kinda difficult to rate this, as it is mostly her story... which I did find interesting to read. Didn't agree with some of the things said, but I loved how the author read the audiobook - it was SO easy to listen to because it was her voice telling her story. I liked the message on beauty and how everyone's definition of beauty is different.

All in all, I liked the book.

The book itself was good. It just wasn’t my typical genre I read, so it took me a little longer to read it. The advice in it was really good, and I love that she was so open and honest with some of her experiences.

I wish there were more stories.

I really liked Lauren on American Idol and have looked up, read and sang a lot of her songs sing then. When I saw this book I was like should I though? I dont normally read autobiographies or self help books. I don't normally read books about religion. I did but it anyway because I liked the sample I downloaded and I wanted to read more. I liked the way she wrote about her life experiences and sprinkled in some advice. It was not a bible or forcing a religion on anyone, but her talking about her faith and what she thinks. I do wish she had more stories about all of the things that she has gone through so far in her life.

I really enjoyed learning more about Laurens story and thought that the truths she shared in here were ones that are good for anyone to be reminded of. If you’re a fan of hers you’ll definitely enjoy this book.

Favorite Quote: “The hard truth is that if you aren’t happy right now, you won’t be happy when you reach that goal. Because you will still be you… You’ll still have the same insecurities, the same doubts, and be just as hard on yourself. If you don’t feel content with who you are and what you have today, you won’t be more content tomorrow with who you might be or what you might have.”

Written like it's coming from big sister wrapping her arm around your shoulders and leading you towards wisdom and a better way of living, Lauren Alaina is her authentic self throughout this memoir/Christian living book. I did this on audio and Lauren's charming accent made me not want to press pause. I have been following Lauren on Instagram for several years now and I enjoy the snippets of her life she shares as well as her masterful puns, but this book helped me see more of the women behind the screen and appreciate her as a person and artist even more. If you like Lauren and/or celebrity memoirs, this is a delightful read!

Easily the best book I’ve read all year. I can’t put into words how much I needed what Lauren Alaina had to say on each page. As a college girl pursuing performance, I related to Lauren’s story and felt like she was a big sister giving me advice. I totally recommend this book to any girl with big dreams like I have whose story is a lot less than perfect. I closed the book with tools to help me love myself a little more and look to my Creator for hope.

I need her as a bestie! Raw personal stories with life lessons she's learned along the way with some insight behind the songs she's written and the meaning behind the lyrics & how to be your own biggest fan. (She's also amazing in concert :D )

Through faith, joy, perseverance, and compassion Lauren teaches the reader many life lessons about how to be yourself, stand out and live boldly and courageously in a world that does not always celebrate it. She shares her experiences of grieving a loved one, going through poverty, an alcoholic father, her parents’ divorce, her journey on American Idol, as well as overcoming an eating disorder to teach us how to love ourselves the way we are, embrace what matters to you most, have gratitude, don’t give up on your dreams, and find comfort in the little things in life. This book is not written in a typical autobiographical style. Rather than telling her life story in chronological order, the book is divided into chapters each representing a life lesson, in which she uses messages from her own life experiences anecdotally. Each chapter also includes “self-help” pages which offer questions, journal prompts and thought-provoking messages to the reader, to help with self-discovery, gratitude, and learning to live your best life. Her messages conveyed in this book are done so in a refreshing way, with unique insights and stories to accompany them, and I’d recommend to anyone going through a difficult season in their life, especially to adolescent girls and young women learning to love who they are and discover their path in life.

TW⚠️: ED & Alcoholism⚠️

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book. I’m a HUGE fan of Lauren and her music, so I was really excited about finally getting the chance to read this book. Lauren talks a lot about her relationship with the Lord, counseling, and just real life stuff. I definitely learned a lot and I love how she challenges the reader at the end of each chapter with in depth questions. Knowing more of her story… her being vulnerable and encouraging readers to do the same is really uplifting. This felt real—sometimes I feel like people just write a book about themselves or a “self help” just to say they did it. That isn’t what Lauren did here. She talks a lot about romantic relationships, friendships, grief, loss… I really think all girls need to read this book. I would recommend 13+ just because there are some heavy topics talked about, but I’m really impressed by this one. Lauren, thanks for being a friend💜

This has been sitting on my shelf for a while and I finally decided to read it. I listened to most of it on audio and love her southern accent so it was an easy listen. I think I would’ve appreciated this book more and found it more meaningful when I was younger, but some of the advice offered still rings true as an adult (vision books instead of vision boards, talking to God more, don’t wait for that someday when you have ___ to be happy, be thankful now, etc). I enjoyed learning more about her life through the book. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about the book, I just felt it was the wrong time in my life to read it and would recommend it for younger girls in teenage years through their twenties to get the most out of it.

Absolutely amazing!

Lauren’s descriptions of the events she shared are emotional and raw. The way she describes how she has become the person she is today is thought provoking and real. She has a way of viewing her life and the world in ways that I, at 45 years old, haven’t come close to. I’ve struggled my entire life with eating disorders and addictions. I’ve gone from one extreme to the opposite extreme…from anorexia as a teenager to a food addict and compulsive overeater in adulthood. I’ve allowed men to steal my joy and trample on my dreams until they became distant memories. But Lauren Alaina’s book opened something in me. For that, I am grateful.

My brother gave me this book as a Christmas gift and I read it in 6 days! I’ve never read so fast ! She had so many powerful messages to say that really gets you brain thinking! I love how she incorporates details of some hardships she went through before idol , during and after. It made her feel more relatable despite living in the entertainment world! I also love how she had little exercises the end of each chapter that gets you to tap into your inner school and discover the reasons why I am the way I am! Highly recommend to anyone who has self esteem issues and needs a kick in the confidence boost !

I listened to the audio, as well as read the book, and I think that even if I had only read the book it would've still sounded in my head like Lauren. I love when memoirs/autobiographies read like the person writing them and this one does. It was even better because Lauren Alaina actually narrates the audio version, so no imagining.

The book is split in to 12 chapters and covers several different moments in Lauren's life. At the end of every chapter is a section meant to help you think, learn, and grow to be a better you. I enjoyed those. I also loved how the book comes across as a friend talking to you and telling you what she learned along the way.

I've been a fan of Lauren Alaina since I saw her on American Idol and love Road Less Traveled as it's my anthem. I was not a super fan and did not know about some of the struggles she had to overcome until I read her story. A story every girl, especially one who has an eating disorder or is in a bad relationship, should read. You always come first. You always should matter as you are. Never, I repeat, never change for someone who doesn't appreciate you for you. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way in order for it to stick. I'm glad Lauren found her way and had the support she needed. Always lean on those who love you for you.

This book was positive and uplifting and well-intended, but I do not believe it was a great book. It felt like a way for Lauren to get a lot off her chest and inspire, but the inspiration doesn’t work for me as much as at 25 years as it would’ve at 12, and that’s okay.
Lauren also stated in the introduction that this book is for anyone - Christian or not, but I must disagree. There was an entire chapter called Talking to God, which would’ve been uncomfortable if I wasn’t Christian.
Overall, pretty uplifting book with good self-love tips, but not a phenomenal piece of literature.

This is an excellent book for young girls. Lauren deals with insecurity, self-hate, pressure to be someone you’re not, etc. At the end of each chapter she has a “Get To It” section that lists things to do and how to do them. Some of the best advice is in her section on “It’s Okay to Not To Be Okay.”
Lauren has a strong, well- grounded faith in and relationship with God and emphasizes the importance of both.
Depending on the maturity and reading ability of the girl, I’d say ages 8 or 9 and older for when to read the book.

I loved listening to this book and wish I would have had it in my twenties.

“If you don’t know yourself and aren’t your own biggest champion it is so easy to settle for a pretty good situation instead of fighting for the amazing situation you really want and deserve.”

“Take a chance for something better. It’s up to you to know what’s worth fighting for. Sometimes you have to be the bad guy to be the good guy for yourself.”

“A hard season doesn’t mean that something really beautiful can’t come on the other side.”

“You can’t change anyone but yourself.”

Best book I have read in quite a while!! Would recommend to women (and men) of all ages. I think we sometimes look at celebrities and think their lives are full of all sunshine and no rainy days. Lauren quickly explains that is not true and shares situations in her own life that are relatable. I love how she shares unapologetically about how her faith has guided her through both the rough patches as well as the high moments she has experienced. Time well invested!

I wanted to love this book, but it wasn’t very helpful to me as a married 27 year old woman and mother to 3 kids. This seemed really targeted for young teens who are still in their early dating years. I personally wouldn’t recommend this to friends in my age range but it might be a great book for when my daughter is a pre teen. The book did help me come to the realization that I haven’t been my true authentic self though and I need to work on that.

Very uplifting, amazing book!

This was a wonderful book and I am so thankful that I read it. I started keeping a gratitude journal this year so I loved how Lauren pointed on that we should be thankful for everything we have and to refer back to our journals when we feel like we have less than others. I loved the examples that Lauren gave also in this book as they were very powerful!

I finally finished this book! I have been “currently reading” this book for almost a year 😬😅 This is a good book, I’m just the wrong demographic for it. It’s geared toward girls in their late teens to mid-twenties who are still trying to figure themselves out. Chapter 8 The Other Side: Climbing the Mountain of Grief was beautifully written and impactful. The book itself is also very aesthetically pleasing. 3.5 💫

I have loved Lauren since she was on American Idol!
I got this as a gift for Christmas because it was on my wish list and this was my 3rd book read of 2025.
I am so happy I chose this book! It was so amazing to read about her life and see a little deeper into her life. And also to learn the little bit of advice she has for how to live life. After reading this book, I feel a little weight lifted off my shoulders, like something really clicked when I was reading this book!

Inspiring. True. Vulnerable. Lauren Alaina poured her heart into this book. She took her own experiences along with her bubbly and authentic personality and used them to encourage and inspire others who are on this journey of life. This book covered everything from relationships, goals, and God. Truly a great read!
