Ahh ... there's not much like a good leadership book. And this is definitely one of them.
I read Rebecca Minkoff's book Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success earlier this year (and loved it, spoiler alert)--Perell's book _Jump_ is in a similar vein, and well worth a read. She writes engagingly, humorously, and frankly about her own struggles and successes in life, parsing out a number of insightful lessons.
No, I am not an entrepreneur (and am finally okay with that, lol). And maybe you're not either. Can non-entrepreneurs learn from this? Absolutely.
The challenge for me at times was to pull back a little bit and let my faith (ultimately, God) guide where the author places the self. "Your truth" (and its related messaging) is always a bit of a troublesome phrase for me in this regard; not that I was surprised to have it show up here, at all--I fully expected it, haha. So, knowing that and being prepared to rework that framework is something for me, at least, to be aware of and ready for.
I particularly enjoyed each chapter's "jump prep" and "jump hacks"--basically a built-in study guide--as well as several questions in Chapters 5-6 that are particularly timely as we approach the start of a new year.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Kim Perell's book Jump is about daring to trust your instincts and live a purposeful life. If you feel you are meant to be an entrepreneur or be successful in whatever field you function best, the author says Jump right in and make it happen.
Perell writes with the right attitude about topics such as three reasons to jump, master your mindset, turning fears into fuel, using your own powerful decision making, defining your own success, creating a one-year plan, using the art of relationship building and tapping into your inner strengths.
She introduces her readers to a concept I've not heard before, but I love it called the DWYSYWD - Do What You Say You Will Do. The acronym is the same frontward or backward. The book lays out ways to jump into business by planning, using your emotional courage and just flat out giving your idea a try. UShe also talks about failing and getting back up and trying again. The business strategies are not all that new but writing about the emotional side of starting a business and possibly failing or possibly being a success offers some great insight in how successful entrepreneurs think.
She describes three types of jumpers, Survival Jumpers; Opportunity Jumpers and Stagnant Jumpers. Perell was forced to become a survival jumper when she got laid off from her high-profile, high-paying job. She found that jumping from rock bottom is easy because you have nowhere else to go but up.
She writes, "Stagnation is death. And change isn't as nearly as scary as it might seem on the surface."
Perell does provide the reader a number of relevant case studies including her own and her fathers' history of business.
I really liked the book and the concepts she introduces. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to make any type of career or even personal changes in their life.

Most helpful to me is the section on how to build networks - not just yours, but helping others build theirs. One of Kim's quotes that resonates with me is: "One of my goals when I meet someone is to introduce them to someone else who can support them." If the relationship flourishes, they will always remember who introduced them.

It’s a fast read. I do like her breakdown of why people jump ship to a new job. This book is more for the entrepreneur who should take that risk and jump to it. Almost makes one wish schools would teach this.
‘I would like to have seen more examples of people who have ‘made it’ and not just the usual ones such as Oprah, Bill Gates, Facebook, Netflix, Ben and Jerry’s, etc. These are the ones everyone talks about but what about the ones that have made it but yet get no lime limelight?
Like with most of these books let’s face it the author has already succeeded in business. I doubt I’ll see a book about someone who has tried time and again and failed every single time.
I did want to know about her prior company that she had built and just seeing those hardships.
It’s not a bad book and if it helps someone in the end well that’s the best part.
If you're interested in a career change (especially the leap into entrepreneurship) and are scared to jump ship, this book might just give you the gentle kick in the ass you need.
Kim Perrel explains how many others did so including herself. And she provides you with a roadmap to figure out what you want and how to take action.
I listened to the audiobook and downloaded the supporting roadmap PDF.
Jump is a great motivation to make the change in your life you've been thinking about. Kim Perell writes in a frank and conversational tone putting together a plan that leans into making it personal not perfect. A great read.

I thought perhaps this book would be full of fluff instead of substance but I was wrong! Kim includes relevant data, engaging stories, heartfelt personal experiences, and personal growth lessons and activities that will encourage you to make that JUMP! I want to leave my 20 year career in education to jump into my own business and this the perfect book to help me wrap my head around the fears, thoughts, and hesitation s holding me back.
Really enjoyed it. Kim does a nice job of summarizing things that are important in business and also ways to cope with getting over your fear of starting a new or improving on your current role. It was a quick read and she provides a ton of great antidotes on how to move forward, worth the time.
I listened to this ebook. I hated it. If I never have to hear “trust me” or “I guarantee it” again, it will be fine by me. Written from a privileged point of view with anecdotal examples. Few useful “tips”.
Easy read. Good intro into a self-help genre. I would reccomend it. It would also be a nice book for a recent grad from both high school or college. Or someone thinking to start a company. Few good nuggets for more experienced jumpers as well. Approachable content.
If you’re new to the subject this book could be a very helpful compilation. But for those more familiar with the subject you may find the information contained within a bit generic, though placed within an interesting enough life story to not make it hard to get through by any means.
Great book! Kim Perell gave a lot of great advice on how to over come your fear to a point so you can make that jump to a new job. Good motivational tidbits too.
Kim Perell offers real-world advice for taking that next jump in your career and it is never too late to jump. Olivia Auerbach does a great job articulating the Audible version. The new book details Perell's own success, as well as the success of those from Sara Blakely (Spanx) to James Dyson (Dyson) to Reed Hastings (Netflix) along with many others. Jump offers a reminder that fear is fleeting while also a crucial part of success. I just finished reading this and would recommend it. ☕📚
