Don't miss this original canon story set in the world of the Emmy Award-winning Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince, with story by the creators of the series and of the New York Times bestselling Through the Moon (The Dragon Prince Graphic Novel #1).
Every Moonshadow elf child knows the scary stories of the Bloodmoon Huntress, the evil sorceress who steals your blood on the night of the Harvest Moon. Everyone also knows those legends aren’t true.
But for young Rayla, whose parents recently left her behind to fulfill their duty as members of the elite Dragonguard, this autumn is scarier than most. Her guardians, Runaan and Ethari, are still getting the hang of the whole parenting thing, and no one will tell Rayla what Runaan does for a living. She spends most of her time exploring the forest outside the Silvergrove.
When Rayla discovers a young Skywing elf in danger just hours before the Harvest Moon will rise, the scary stories become real. Can she stop the Huntress before the moon reaches its zenith?
Fans won’t want to miss this exclusive, original graphic novel from Peter Wartman and Felia Hanakata, with story by The Dragon Prince creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond!
Rayla's parents leave to be part of the Dragonguard and they leave Rayla with Runaan and Ethari. Rayla is not too thrilled about it and it's quite an adjustment for Runaan and Ethari too. When no one tells Rayla what Runaan does for work, Rayla gets curious and follows Runaan. She also wanders in the forest but with Harvest Moon also known as the Blood Moon fast approaching, Rayla is told to be careful. But when Rayla finds a skywing elf in trouble, she wants to help. Would Rayla succeed?
This story is a flashback into Rayla's past so it only features Rayla and her guardians Runaan and Ethari. Obviously, I missed the whole gang but at the same time, I enjoyed this story. It gives an important insight into the existing world but I only wish it were longer and there was more about the Blood Moon Huntress. An exciting read nonetheless for the fans of this world and the Netflix series.
🍷— mini review .ᐟ second read ┆graphic novel ┆lgbt side characters
⤿ i love the show “the dragon prince” on netflix so these graphic novels are a fun read that add some insight to the plot in the show!! a character that appears in this book, kimdael, is in season 5 so i highly recommend reading this before watching it. also, it was pretty fun reading ab rayla as a child, and now i definitely get why she hates water lol
Don't get my rating wrong—I really appreciate that the team behind The Dragon Prince is giving us extra content outside of the animated series itself, and I especially appreciate that this graphic novel is extremely Runaan and Ethari-centric outside of Rayla being the main character. But something is keeping me from giving it a full 5 stars, and I can't quite put a finger on it, so I'll list a few things that stood out to me.
I'm not sure I vibe with the way Runaan is portrayed here, as he seems more of a heartfelt character than what we see in the show. I know we have not seen a lot of him as of yet, but the characterization just felt a little off to me personally. Maybe it would have translated differently if he was animated and voiced by Jonathan Holmes. (Free Runaan from the coin soon, I beg of you.)
Speaking of, I definitely felt like this would have been even better if it were animated. Again, don't get me wrong, because I will take all the graphic novels I can get. It's beautifully drawn, and I know prequel and backstory material is difficult to incorporate into the show, especially regarding a story like this that would probably take a few episodes in itself were it to be animated. But in reading the dialogue, I couldn't make out the distinct voices of each character like I was able to with the last graphic novel.
Finally, I wish it was a little longer. I would have liked to know more information about the bloodmoon huntress herself, whether that be information they put together at the end regarding her powers and possibly her own backstory, or just more observations regarding her present state. What even IS she aside from some sort of corrupt Moonshadow elf who is far older than she should be? The way it's set up, I do wonder if she will be returning in the show somehow. I'm very curious.
Overall, still very much worth it for the Moonshadow lore and worldbuilding tidbits, let alone the story itself, even though I'm almost left with more questions than answers.

A flashback tale set during Rayla's childhood as she learns the meaning of...something? Duty? Protecting the people you care about? Why murder is okay sometimes? The moral of this one's a little murky, to say the least.
It's also kind of difficult to pinpoint why she learns it, other than because Runaan and Ethari...are nice to her? And while we're talking about murky plot points, everyone writes the Bloodmoon Huntress off as a legend, but Runaan and Ethari talk about her like they knew she was out there the entire time, so which is it?
The more I think about this book, the less sense it makes.
I do like that the story kind of subtly touches on the idea of leaving people you love for the greater good, which seems to be Rayla's MO between seasons 3 and 4 of the show, so that's kind of appropriate even if it wasn't intentional.
The artwork's pretty, but it's also very low on backgrounds for most of the book, with just solid fields of colour most of the time.
This'll tide you over between seasons of the show, but don't expect much.
Čia labai specifinis komiksas, nes jis yra animacinio serialo The Dragon Prince tie-in. Čia istorija iš pagrindinės personažės Reilos vaikystės. Gerai susiskaitė, piešimas gal vietomis šlubuoja, bet deja negaliu rekomenduoti nemačius serialo.
Great addition! Adorable baby Rayla learning about making sacrifices for those you love, domestic Runaan/Ethari, and a cute moment with Rayla and her parents before they leave. Plus a cool fight at the end.
(I wonder if the bloodmoon huntress will make an appearance in the show.)
I'm sorry I really wanted to love this one. In fact the Bloodmoon huntress in season 5 was so cool it's the entire reason I decided to read the graphic novels so I could know her better. But this comic was just kinda... Dull. Very very dull.
First off this not a Bloodmoon huntress story but rather a story about Rayla settling in with her new found family with Runaan and Ethari and coping with her parents leaving her. Ok so it's not what I expected that's perfectly fine, so if this is gonna be a mediation on a new family dynamic and the struggles they must face in this new phase of their life then that's okay. Except as a family and character drama it just falls so flat. We spend pages and pages of unimportant jargon. We can tell Rayla and Runaan don't get along but is there more to this. We know she's upset about her parents abandoning her but is there more to this?!? I feel like this would be so much more interesting told in the perspective of Runaan and Ethari. The way the bloodmoon huntress was integrated into the narrative is genuinely worse than amateur writing. It borderline reads like middle school grade writing. The Huntress is foreshadowed with a few lines of dialogue, no real intrigue or mystery behind her. No real sense of a sinister unnatural presence. Just her showing up in the last quarter threatening a family and Runaan coming in to fight her off. OK so this conflict brings them closer with eachother and influences Rayla to take on the role of assassin simply because the Huntress was a threat that united them, I guess it helps them trust Rayla but why is trust the central conflict here. Shouldn't it be about something more paternal?? Maybe you could do a cool thing about the BLOODmoon Huntress needing specific blood perhaps the blood of family. You could then intergrate this into the idea of family going beyond blood ties and have the Huntress presence fold into this central theme for the dynamics within Rayla's new family. I don't know... anything unique or interesting like that?? That's not even a good idea, it's just a half baked something I made up while writing this and it's still more compelling than what we got. This is just such a painfully bland unimaginative lazy read that wastes such a cool character and concept.
This is a must read for all the fans of TDP, and it helped me with my read lock (if that's how you call it...?)
It was a good story. This shows more the kind of relationship Rayla and Runnan have, it's like, they love each other but at the same time, there's some bitterness between them, the same for Rayla and her parents. And I think, for the way they both are, it makes sense. This comic helped me to understand more the moonshadow elves culture and their way of thinking.
Now, the bloodmoon huntress appeared briefly. Her character design is really good, and I can't wait to see her on the tv show facing Rayla once more.
About Rayla choosing to be an assassin, I wish they had made something more significant, she decided to be an assassin way too easily.
The little moments between Ethari and Runnan melted my heart. Now I like Runnan a little bit more, because we see how he feels regarding his assassin job.

A brief dive into the relationship between young Rayla and her "adoptive" family, Bloodmoon Huntress walks us through Rayla's decision to train as a Moonshadow assassin. Leaning on atmospheric art - especially for the fight scenes! - this story both expands the world of Xadia and explores the difficult path that sometimes must be walked in order to protect loved ones. The Dragon Prince team has delivered once again!
A wonderful glimpse into Rayla's early life with Runaan and Ethari. God, I hope we see Ethari and Runaan reunited again soon. They're darling (see what I did there?) together.
I heard in an interview that Kimdael may appear in the show, so this is a good time to prep yourself and read this comic!
Loved reading Rayla's backstory on how she because an elven assassin! The art is the same style as the show and it has the same cute humor! Only downside: there's no Bait in the story, but oh well guess I'll have to wait for the next season to go on Netflix.
it is a truth universally acknowledged that two murder husbands need a little assassin daughter😌 a very cute backstory of how rayla came to live with her adoptive dads. especially recommended to the dragon prince fans who want to see more of runaan👀😳
I loved seeing how they handled the difficult conversations with Rayla, they did a really fantastic job. Also the Bloodmoon Huntress is gorgeous, my goodness.
kocham smoczego księcia bardzo i cieszę się, że mogłam bliżej poznać runaana i ethari mała rayla jest przeslodka i w końcu wiem czemu ma lęk związany z wodą
It follows a pivotable moment in one of the MC’s life has her parent leave her in the care of her uncles who married good that the creative didn’t stray from that. The story moves with her trying to find own place among them feels detached til she’s how what there jobs and comes in contact with her future postion in the elf community.
Do the story takes a dark turn has amn original villain is introduced not from the show but this might be my opinion a chacther for season 3 but only time will tell. Has from that it gave the story great great chacther development and it’s own place secrets from the show to gives own place to grown into and impenetrable into the shows 3 season.
