KinderGarden Of Eden: How the Modern Liberal Thinks

Rate this book
Why the Modern Liberal's thinking leads him to side with evil over good, wrong over right and the behaviors that lead to failure over those that lead to success. Further extrapolating on the ideas in his wildly popular viral youtube talk to the Heritage Foundation, that has received over 600k hits, Evan Sayet uses his signature wit in this new book to ask thought- provoking questions during these turbulent economic and social times. And he provides the reader with some surprising answers. Andrew Breitbart said that Evan Sayet's Heritage Foundation Speech was 'one of the five most important conservative speeches ever given.' That speech was the foundation for this book. How did the song "Imagine" by John Lennon become the perfect symbol of liberal thinking? Why does Bruce Springsteen dub "pain" as the wages of toil and hard work? What’s the Democrats’ beef with God? What do they have against the Jews of Israel? Why do they want abortion to be commonplace and frequent? Why does the Modern Liberal –the dominant force in today’s Democratic Party and in so much of today’s popular culture – seem to always side with evil over good, wrong over right and the behaviors that lead to failure over those that lead to success? Evan Sayet answers those questions and a lot more.

Fantastic read, rings true. If only we could do something about it. This is in the same vein as David Mamet's book, also highly recommended.

This quick read explains why the Modern Liberal's thinking leads him to side with evil over good, wrong over right and the behaviors that lead to failure over those that lead to success. It helps me understand how liberals can feel so strongly about validating sexual perversions, protecting terrorists and criminals while endangering law-abiding citizens, promoting sexual promiscuity and widespread abortion, ignore basic laws of economics (i.e. pushing for a higher minimum wage that is only causing more workers to lose their jobs), and looking down on hard work (capitalism) and encouraging socialism, laziness, and a welfare state. To me, right and wrong is obvious and it's mind-boggling how liberals feel that nothing is "better" than anything else, such as: Islam (and its terrorist acts) are as good as Christianity, a gay lifestyle and pedophilia are no worse for society than a married heterosexual monogamous relationship, criminal immigrants are free to wander our streets and kill US citizens, and criminals who defy police should not be "handled roughly" by police. It's a sad state our country is in, as we embrace terrorists, murderers of babies, criminals, and sexual deviants and affirm that their lifestyle choices are not "worse" than other lifestyle choices; they're just different (and equal) preferences. Evan Sayet explained things well in his book. Because he was a liberal until 9/11, he truly knows how a "modern liberal" thinks!

“an essential distinction must be drawn between intellect and what I’ll call “intellectualism.” For my purposes throughout the book, the former is the use of one’s mind to discover the rightful answers. The latter, on the other hand, is the use of one’s mind only to conjure clever explanations for what is already believed.”

"Since he believes that objectivity is impossible, (the liberal) does not and will not engage his intellect to seek out the rightful answers. Whatever he might discover through the process, he's convinced, would be at best merely his own "point of view" - a point of view that, by definition, would be no more right and no more valid than any and every other. Since he believes all points of view are equally right and valid, (he) is convinced that anyone who would declare his own point of view right or another point of view wrong is and can only be a bigot (for his side) or a phobic (against the other)." -p. 2

"Without right or wrong everything becomes just a matter of taste and the alternatives merely different flavors. To the Modern Liberal, then, any attempt to use God or science to argue on behalf of one "flavor" over another - say Western civilization over Islam - would be like trying to make a moral or scientific argument on behalf of chocolate over strawberry ice cream" -p. 39

"What binds those at the very, very top and the very, very bottom to the Democratic Party is their shared rejection of the existence of the better and, in turn, their disdain for - and, in fact their loathing and fear of - rational thought and physical toil." - p. 52

"Since the Modern Liberal's paradise requires denying the existence of the better, all behaviors - hard work and sloth, ingenuity and chicanery, sobriety and drug addiction - must be equally and indiscriminately rewarded." - p. 96

"So great is this 'moral imperative' in fact, that punishing the successful and rewarding the failed is not only a priority it is the Modern Liberal's top priority - with no other consideration even coming in second." - p. 108

"The Modern Liberal will ascribe to the better the negative qualities associated with the lesser, while concurrently ascribing to the lesser the positive qualities found in the better." - p. 115 (i.e. trying to make Christians look like terrorists, in defense of Islamic terrorists)

“If it were truly “income inequality” that the Modern Liberal cares so much about, then why isn’t there an “Occupy Hollywood” movement?”

A very interesting look into Modern Liberal thinking!

As someone who is fresh into the adult world of working and becoming a provider for myself and my future children, I'm realizing more and more the problems my generation and upcoming generations will not only face but cause as a result of buying into this entitled, "I don't need to do better" fantasy of the Modern Liberal movement for mediocrity and complacency. We are no longer taught to think for ourselves and form our own opinions, but to agree mindlessly with left-wing idealism, or else be severely criticized.

Although extreme at times, there are many great points to be found in this book, most of which I agree with having seen some of the idiocy, and lack of responsibility and self-respect firsthand among my peers. If you're looking for something to rip into Modern Liberal ideologies, you may find this book more than sufficient.

The simple idea of the value of discretion is exquisitely examined against the alternative...never making a value judgement. What happens in this case is the liberal state that always chooses the worst possible side in almost any debate. I found myself first saying "no, this cannot be true" , and then ultimately unable to find fault with the thesis. His youtube lecture sums up the book almost better than the book and is a better starting place to understand this argument.

I don't disagree with the theme or the specific points, but I guess I'm spoiled; Prager, Shapiro, Whittle, and their kind do political humor so much better. I have read this mean-spirited, caustic style of analysis from those who criticize conservatism, and it's no more palatable here just because the target is more deserving.

To say that this book is a steaming pile of tripe would be an insult to steaming piles of tripe everywhere. He drags out the same old discredited and disproved strawman arguments that have been brought out by conservative christians everywhere for decades to use against the left and adds nothing new. I'm no fan of the left, either. As a scientist I want facts, not beliefs. His arument that everything good and right in this country is due to men of and women of God and science is highly annoying and just shows his naivete as to what the Founding Fathers intended with the separation of church and state. I've got news for you Mr. Sayet, the government of the Us was not and was never intended to be a christian nation (to paraphrase John Adams). While he brings up some good points (mostly his quotes from Allan Bloom), to use his own phrase, "not only is he wrong, he is as wrong as wrong can be." And for just once, I'd like to find a conservative writer who is an atheist and doesn't go dragging their imaginary friend into every argument they make against liberals.

Basically an opinion piece, this short book is compelling and thoughtful. It cogently connects the dots of things I have observed, experienced and wondered about.
The content was originally developed and delivered as a speech. There were sections that provided drama for the spoken word, but seemed difficult and awkward for me as a reader. Perhaps a more active editor would have reworked the text to accommodate the different format.

Outstanding, but....

Evan Sayet’s explanation of the modern left is spot on! The book is superb. Outstanding. My only complaint is that also appears to be incomplete. He keeps referring to a later edition that’s supposed to come out in 2013, but... I’ve not yet seen this later edition. And I did look for it. Still, the book is so good that I couldn’t bring myself to give it any less than a 5-star rating.

This is a quick read. Funny, insightful, and relevant to the times we live in. I realize calling someone stupid is not the best way to make a point or win an argument, but Sayet does a wonderful job of categorizing, explaining and reasoning why the model left is....stupid. Lots of juicy tidbits here. Highly recommended for those who "think discriminately."

The greatest sin is to call sin sin

Evan Sayet captures the core of our culture. To address the corruption and destruction of virus, Sayet clarifies the values (or lack thereof) being pursued today. I think he nails it.

Shocking and. Disturbing

I chose this rating because the co cntents are not new but written so there is no doubt about what is happening to our wonderful country. Just throw in a large chunk of Orwell's. 1984 and pay attention to. Your nightly news.

There are two kinds of people in America today, those who are Liberals and those who are not. Evan Sayet was a self professed Liberal on 9/10. On 9/13 he became conservative in his thinking. We all know what happened on 9/11. On 9/12 he took time to reflect on what happened on 9/11 and on what he thought about it. This book explains how Liberals think, how he once thought and why that thinking is wrong. Personally I knew that Liberals significantly thought different that I did/do but never knew why or how. It all boils down to opposites, good vs evil; success vs. failure, etc. In Sayet's opinion he believes that Liberals are dominated by people in the business of rhetoric or better said people like politicians, educators, actors, etc who are in the business of creating or doing nothing. that is the premise of this book and it was an eye opener for me. I would challenge every Liberal to read it and defend your liberal beliefs if you can can; but I doubt it.

Like drinking from a firehose

I didn’t realize there was a longer version of this book, which I am about to look up. This book brought ideas and conclusions so rapidly that I will have to read it again tomorrow to recall the points. I really enjoyed the book. I hope to find ways to put these conclusions into actions.
