A completely compelling, original crime story - not sure why I picked it up but so glad I did! I laughed out loud but shed more tears than I have in a long time. I will think of Duchess Day Radley for years to come and try and channel some of her courage
WHOA. I did not expect to end my night in tears, but We Begin at the End gave me a broken heart.
The story follows a 13 year old girl who has lived a hard-knock life and has to grow up way before her time. Each chapter unraveled a new revelation along with the character growth of the girl. By the end, there are just so many emotions for a reader to sort through. There is very little that is black/white, and oh-so-much gray.
I don't want to spoil anything futher but if you want a heartfelt, small-town story where everyone sacrifices their own happiness for the "greater good" (in their opinions), this is for you. If you want a good cry, this is for you. If you want to just wallow in your feelings, THIS IS FOR YOU.

First time reader of Chris Whitaker…just engaged with the story in the first chapter and couldn’t put it down!So many twists and turns and loved it. Will be looking out for another by this author for sure.
This is the third book I’ve read of Chris Whittaker and I’m not sure which one now is my favourite. Although not as big as all the colours of the dark a really deep story that just has so many twists and turns. Duchess is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
I loved this story, great writing and characterisation. I had a lump on my throat quite a few times and didn't really want the story to end. Will be looking for other Chris Whittaker books. Recommend!
I didn’t particularly like his writing style but I must have got use to it as the story hooked me right in. On the whole it was a very sad story with quite a few surprises along the way.
I have had this book on my TBR list for such a long time. So glad I have now read it. A mystery book that made me laugh out loud and cry lots and kept me guessing until the end. Loved the characters- Duchess Day Radley the Outlaw, Robin her wee brother and Thomas Noble. Then the adults in the story - Chief Walker ((Walk) - his weariness flew off the pages, Star the children’s mother and Grandpa Hal. Just loved this book. Very highly recommended.
