“I know you think it’s weird that I don’t hang out with girls, but the girls don’t like me. They say things about you. They talk a lot about famous people—famous guys especially.”
“And that’s why you don’t make friends with them?” She nods. “Was it the same in Dallas?” Another nod.
“Outside of my family, there’s only one girl who’s ever had my heart.”
“Who’s the lucky woman and what did she do to land you?”
I search for Haley across the room. “She yelled at me, hit me and followed me around for months. She sang my songs even when I told her not to. She kept all my secrets and pretty much showed me how to live again.”
“So the way to your heart is through stalking?”
“Nah, so please don’t try it. This particular version of stalking can’t be replicated. It was a one time deal. I read it as charming. It should’ve been weird as fuck.”

Haley Cross may have lasted two years at Wicked… But she won’t last an hour with me.

I wonder why he’s here. I wonder what took him so long. I wonder what he’s going to do to me when I get off this stage.
This girl’s my shadow. We’re bound together by a thread that won’t let go even though we’re opposites in so many ways—she’s bright, I’m dark; she’s new, I’m jaded; she’s curious, I’m closed off. But from the second I noticed her, I can’t unsee her.
“I can’t be what you want.” I expect her to protest or pull away. Instead she smiles, the tiniest gesture in the blackness of the car, but I feel it in every part of me. “You already are.”
I realized being alone is good sometimes. Because no matter what happens, there are times in your life when all you have is you. And you’ve got to learn to have your own back.
