A second shot at love. Her best next chance at happiness.

After years of torment and pain, Charity Cole feels safe again. The isolated house within which she lives and works is her haven. But her sanctuary is invaded when her icy, reserved boss shows up unannounced. He sees her as he was never meant to see her and Charity’s carefully constructed safe world begins to crumble.

Miles Hollingsworth is a stone cold workaholic. His life revolves around his company and when ill health forces him to take time off he heads to his holiday home where he knows he won’t have to deal with anyone but his dour live-in housekeeper, Mrs. Cole. Cut off by violent winter storms and alone in the huge and isolated house, Miles and Charity are forced to spend more time together than they have before.

The attraction between them burns fiercely and uncontrollably but both are reluctant to act on it. Something has to give but both Charity and Miles have too much at stake to be the first one to break.

I feel I might be slightly generous with the rating, and it’s probably because I usually enjoy reading this author.

That being said, this book was not bad but it wasn’t great or particularly interesting either. When I read the synopsis for it, I clicked preorder in a heartbeat because it sounded like the perfect mysterious/angsty/dramatic deliciousness that Anders usually delivers. Speaking after having read it.. boy was I wrong to assume.

This whole story read very flat. I didn’t feel anything for the characters and I couldn’t sense any chemistry either.

The domestic abuse angle took centre stage in the book and unfortunately it did not come across as real and convincing. It was a very textbook story of spousal abuse and manipulation but it didn’t leave me feeling sad, angry, frustrated or .. anything for the victim. It was like she was an actress given the script of an abuse victim and she went through the motions and dialogue of such a person. It sorely lacked feeling of any kind.

Couple that with the fact that the chemistry between the main couple was almost non- existent, the plot also next to non-existent if you don’t count the abuse backstory of the female lead .. we are not left with much to like in this book now, are we?

All that being said, there was nothing truly wrong with this (meaning, if you’re looking for a simple, safe, love story with a touch of trauma dialogue this is a good one for you) if anything it might actually be a decent read. But knowing the kind of stories this author has delivered before, and my monumental expectations going into it.. I can confidently call this a letdown.

DNF @ 41%

I LOVE Natasha Anders and I have enjoyed every book she has written so far; but, I just couldn’t gain any traction with this one. I tried on multiple occasions, sometimes weeks apart, hoping it was just my mood. I am usually very quick to DNF a book if I’m not enjoying it, but as I said, I love Ms. Anders and wanted to give this every ounce of effort I had within me. Sadly, this book and I are just not meant to be.

I feel awful for not being able to finish this, but I look forward to whatever she gives us next.

Natasha Anders takes us back to Riversend, although a little way out of town this time for Houskeeper; Charity and grumpy business mogul; Miles' story. Moreover, the old adage that appearances can be deceiving is wholly true when it comes to this couple, because as soon as you start reading you quickly realise that both of them have a whole lot more going on than you, or either of them originally thought about the other.

She felt awkward and out of sorts having him in her space…

After overwork and serious illness mean Miles is forced to take an extended break from his work, he immediately up sticks to one of his vacation properties to recuperate, his housekeeper can be trusted to leave him in peace, deal with things without getting in his way and make sure he has everything he needs to convalesce in private. What he didn’t take into account is that she is usually given weeks to plan having guests in the house and ensure that everything is on hand to fulfil everyone requirements. So turning up in the middle of a storm and expecting everything to be ready for his occupancy causes more than a little inconvenience for her, and it doesn’t take long for Miles to realise there is more to Charity Cole than the mild, meek and almost invisible domestic help he had always thought she was.

This man… was nothing like the cold calculating person she had originally believed him to be…

Stuck in close proximity for long lengths of time, with only a stray puppy as a buffer means this is a couple that both learn more about the other as the days pass, and they both start see past the facades the other hides behind to the real person beneath. Attraction burns fast and hot for Miles, but it doesn’t take him long to understand that although Charity is on the same page, she isn’t a woman to trust in a man easily, the reasons for why become clearer and clearer the closer they become, the trust that builds also gives her the strength to face her past head on, something she has spent three years hiding from as Miles Housekeeper.

She had been broken for so long, it was hard to remember being whole and undamaged…

Once again Natasha Anders nails you in the feels, giving her readers a story built around a likeable but troubled couple. Charity and Miles’ story is loaded with heart, heat, emotion, and most importantly, a really cute dog called Stormy, who I have to say added a little levity at points where it was most needed. I devoured this book, it was great to return to a locale that I have come to know with the authors previous books, and checking in with the Alpha Men and the Broken Pieces couples was the icing on the book cake!

"I don't need you to make things easier for me. I just... need you."

This book isn't about the hero protecting the heroine from the bad guy; this is about the heroine fighting her own battles and learning to move on... with a little help from the hero. It had me sad crying, proud crying, squealing and laughing. Oh, did I mention there's a dog?

I don't usually read books where the hero and heroine are cooped up together because it just seemed boring, and honestly for the first part of the book it was kind of boring. Not enough to make me want to DNF but enough to make me wonder 'So... where are we going with this?'. It soon picked up for me, though, and it became a story that I love! It helped that there was the cutest little dog hehe.

"But I have to warn you... I'm not neutral. I'm like 150 percent in your corner."

Miles and Charity start off as companions, turn into friends and then eventually find themselves falling for each other. I really liked this progression of their relationship; it didn't feel rushed, and I also appreciated that the book touched on the fact that they're employer/employee. Miles and Charity cared about each other and had so much fun in each other's company and I found myself very invested in the relationship. It's the small things... like how Charity finds it so adorable whenever Miles talks about his fantasy novels or how they talk about whatever cute thing Stormy's done recently. These two were just so. cute.

Miles was an amazing hero. He's presented as a workaholic, but we later find out that a lot of what he does stems from the fact that he wants to take care of those he loves. He wasn't perfect- he did and said some dumb things- but he recognised his mistakes and owned up to them. Also despite his first impression, he was so open to emotions and especially love. I really adored that so much. His interactions with Stormy were one of the best parts of the book- Oh Charity, you never stood a chance.

I don't have as much to say about Charity but I did like her! She'll be the first to admit that she's still hiding but no one can ever say she's not strong. I also liked how aware? she was- e.g. when she would question whether she's falling into the same patterns with Miles.

Stormy deserves a whole paragraph to herself. The interactions between her and the other characters were gold. She had her own personality and it always put a smile on my face.

"'Oh my God, what's this? A pupper? Who are you, buddy?' Vicki asked, scooping Stormy up into her arms. The dog didn't know how to react. Looking excited and terrified and ecstatic all at the same time."

This part was so funny because I could imagine my dog doing the exact same thing!

Honestly, when I look back at the book I can't tell you exactly what made me say 'WOWOWOW' upon finishing it. I just know that this book made me feel. A lot.

“Meet me in the den. Dress comfortably. Mrs. Cole’s services not required. Leave her behind.”

2020, so far, has been… well, I don’t quite know how to describe it. Life has become very chaotic, and me, an avid reader of typically 200-300 books a year haven’t even managed to read more than 50 books so far this year. Anyone who knows me knows how out of character this is. Part of it has been extra demands from work and feeling like I need to do so much more so that I can be one of the lucky ones that gets to stay employed; Another part of it has been general anxiety about the world at large and the rest has been my lack of ability to concentrate for longer than 15 minutes on ANYTHING. It’s been a struggle. It has, though, made me really appreciate the books I HAVE been able to get through, even if it takes me longer than normal to do so.

This story was a real departure from Natasha Anders’ signature angsty asshole hero who must redeem himself. Miles Hollingsworth had no idea what was waiting for him when he went to his vacation home in Riversend to recover from an illness. Charity’s introduction onto the pages was intriguing and entertaining. A trope I’ve read many times, yet Miles and Charity’s story felt quite different. I think this is because the power dynamic seemed to be reversed and I found it quite refreshing.

I immediately felt immersed in the story, ready to be “stranded by the storm” right along with Miles and Charity. It was really nice to not have it all be about attraction and mental barriers. Instead, I was treated to unexpected vulnerability, humourous side plots and interesting personality quirks.

“There’ll be no talk of handing her over to the you-know-what right now, Mrs. Cole,” he said, with a pointed look at the top of the dog’s head. ”

Miles, our hero, was a welcome list to Natasha’s long list of heroes that I have enjoyed getting to know. Though gruff, rich and powerful, his personality was so surprising that I found my grinning throughout the story. He kept surprising me at every turn. From Stormy to his “space operas”, there were a few spit takes that had me giggling. I really don’t think there could have been a better love interest for Charity.

“Come.” There was no hesitation in the familiar command. Not for the first time, Charity shocked and amused herself by picturing him using the exact same word and intonation in bed with one of his lovers as he commanded her to climax.”

Charity’s traumatizing past did not feel forced or overly dramatic. I enjoyed being a part of her finally being able to begin to emerge from hiding, find herself again and start healing.

Having the story set in Riversend was also a nice touch. The integration of Miles and Charity into the already existing set of characters in this town felt very organic. I loved getting to catch up on how some of my favourite couples were doing. And I don’t mind saying that I hope that I get to continue reading about the stories of some of the other characters in the book that have not yet been explored.

Fantastic read!!

Natasha Anders is typically an author that I really enjoy reading, however this book fell a little short. The beginning was very slow and I almost thought I was going to have to DNF. but it picked up a little bit so I continued on. I didn’t feel that much of a connection between the h and H, but I could’ve possibly rated it four stars if the h hadn’t dated in their three month separation. I felt like that ruined their romance for me

"The Best Next Thing" is the story of Charity and Miles.

Really beautiful book about recovery after years of emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

The heroine lives in a limbo, hiding under a disguise and running from her tragic past. When her boss decides to recuperate in his vacation home, they are forced to share an accommodation. As circumstances force her to open up, passions ignite and we see her finally confront her past.

Please read TW as flashbacks have graphic violence against the heroine. The hero was a sweetheart, and there's an adorable puppy in the mix too. The heroine has enough space to recover without pressure, and overall a difficult yet pleasant read.

Safe for me

4 1/2 stars, There are a few things I’ve come the realize as I have read Natasha Anders books. For one and maybe the most important is she can write, she’s not afraid to write situations that most authors would shy away from and she seems to have the knack for making them work when most couldn’t while making you love a book most authors couldn’t pull off with help. Natasha Anders can write drama but she can also write a great uncomplicated romance where you meet characters and get to know them and watch them fall in love. Natasha Anders is just one of those authors you know you can trust and you know you will enjoy her books. This newest book is no exception, this is a perfect summer read not only is this a great romance but the story is great as well.

Miles has come to stay at one of his homes to recuperate even though many thought he should travel to someplace warm and rest Miles knew Mrs. Cole his housekeeper was just what he needed to heel and recover. Mrs. Cole can anticipate everything he may need and take care of everything. Showing up to his home Miles is shocked to find a mysterious woman in his home and shocked to find out who she is. This new revelation changes a lot of things and maybe complicates a few things as well.

Charity left three years ago to lick her wounds and heel but not from woulds like Miles. Now after so much time Charity hasn’t heeled as much as hidden away. When Miles comes home clearly sick Charity is concerned but also knows her place but things quickly change and soon there are so many changes Charity’s mind is spinning.

The more time Charity and Miles spends together the more they realize their plans are quickly changing and what they thought they knew in actuality is really not a lot about the other. But they both are enjoying each other, maybe too much. Miles isn’t the man Charity thought, he’s kinds and thoughtful. Charity is giving but has been broken for so long she has forgotten how to heal deep wounds. The more time they spend together the more they crave the other and open up to the other. But Miles time here is short and the real world can’t be pushed away for forever.

This is a great read I was sucked in right away with these two characters and their story. I loved seeing them fall in love and heal and help the other because they loved them so much. This is just one of those reads you open up and just enjoy, from beginning to end this was just a great book. I loved seeing the changes both Miles and Charity go through as well as the nice cameos we get from previous characters. This really is an amazing read very much worth reading and with all going on right now this is the perfect not only summer read but distraction from all the horrible things going on. I can’t recommend this one enough Ms. Anders yet again did not disappoint.

*Thank you Natasha Anders for this ARC for my review.

I will be honest and say that I normally stay away from boss-employee romances. In real life, those kind of situations bother me, hence the reason I don't like reading about it.
But Natasha Anders is the kind of author that captures my attention even when the topic in her book isn't one I particularly like. Therefore, I decided to give it a shot.
Honestly, it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
Miles Hollingsworth went to South Africa in order to get his health in order, after almost dying because of some respiratory illness (I was certain it was going to be covid-19, but it wasn't).
Charity is his housekeeper, an efficient woman who has mastered the art of becoming invisible. Only Miles manages to see past that facade.
I think this is a slow-burn type of romance. The main characters don't jump into each other in the first chapter, partly because of their work relationship: they are not willing to jeopardize that. But also because of their own issues. Of course, like any other Natasha Anders' book, this one is full of drama and angst.
I really liked this story and their main characters. Miles was a really complex man, fist appearing cold and aloof, but then he shows his kind personality. Charity is also a bit like that, a really close-off woman who seems sullen and unfriendly. The thing is, she has been through something horrible (that the author handles in a perfect way), but her real self is nice and caring.

I have a random comment to make. While I was reading, the song "when the party's over" by Billie Eilish and "that's the way I loved you" by Taylor Swift kept coming into my mind, particularly in the ending. I can't help thinking that a playlist of the book should definitely include at least Bilie Eilish's song.

MEH or the BAD:
Started skipping after 50% coz late-30s/40s hard-working businessman H was kinda beta. He even had average looks & height, compared to his stronger abuse-survivor 30yo strict housekeeper h of 3 yrs. Didn't help that H was also currently recovering from a serious illness. I even skipped the detailed sex scenes since seemed not-so-hot considering her abuse history & their careful romance about healing h.

The GOOD:
H was a good man though and was good for h & his non-judgmental love for her helped heal her from the abuse she went thru from her 3-yr marriage to her perfect & handsome pastor husband who violently abused her but deceived everyone else.

3-3.5 stars?

I am in the middle and DNFing for now.

And I dunno if it's me or this book.
Because I love the characters, the storyline and actually everything.

But there's too much inner monologue for both characters and not enough interactions between them I just can't get into the story completely.
I keep stopping and dunno why.

I think I'll give it a go again later.

Now I wanna read Don't Pretend I'm Yours.
Because it sounds like my kinda read :).

And I still love Natasha's writing, nothing will change that.
And me dnfing might be completely my fault because i'm in the middle of my kitchen renovation and my mind is somewhere else.

DNF @ 35%

I wanted to be daring and read something I usually avoid like the plague; contemporary romance with a Billionaire male MC. This book was an interracial romance between a powerful rich guy and young house keeper with emotional scares hiding out from her painful past.

This interracial romance was boring, annoying and the extreme power imbalance was a real turn off. I should've listened to my instinct and avoided this book but I'm a sucker for romance and opposites attract type of stories.

The hero came across emotionally immature, he was moody at times, snappish for no reason,
and he used his power and authority to get his way even when the heroine was just doing her job. He didn't know how to respect the heroine's personal boundaries and constantly barged into her corners of the house. All of this just made him rude, overbearing and immature. It didn't fit his character description.

I just couldn't stand the slow pace, the lack of plot, the lack of anything worthwhile happening, the annoying hero and the lack of genuine connection or romance between the two and i just couldn't stand it anymore.

This a slow burn romance. Very slow burn. I really enjoyed reading about Miles and Charity's budding/growing romance. Miles is a wealthy businessman who retreats to his So African beachside home. Charity has been his housekeeper for 3 or so years. She's had the home mostly to herself while Miles and his siblings live in the UK.
Miles has previously taken Charity for granted. She goes by the name Mrs Cole. With Miles in a weakened condition (recovering from a respiratory illness), he starts to see "Mrs Cole" as a person.
He sees her as a person. She's a lot younger than he remembers. He catches her out of uniform and likes what he sees. He enjoys her company. Charity isn't as stoic as he once thought.
They each hold back quite a bit-at first. They gradually let their guards down.
I enjoyed the characters very much. The story just didn't move very much and it had some slow parts.
Charity and Miles spend more and more time together. Charity has some secrets that she guards-even from the reader. She eventually opens up.
I've read a few of Ms Anders books, I enjoy the quiet heroine and the growing relationship.
I love how Miles opens up too. He's funny at times and is compassionate. Shhh, he doesn't want that known.
I will read more from this author

When I realised this was a Natasha Anders book I hadn't read I clicked on it straight away. There was nothing wrong with this read but it didn't have the same energy as the other books by the author.

The chemistry between the MCs didn't simmer or sizzle, the connection wasn't there for me.

Charity's in-laws are douchebags and wish there had been a scene where they really had a public setdown.

The domestic abuse angle of the tale took centre stage but didn't have the emotional intensity it needed.

I'm so bummed about my rating for this. I've pretty much read Natasha Anders' entire backlog and know that even if I don't love a particular book, I'll at least enjoy the characters' chemistry and a very good grovel. I'm not sure either of this was present! The story about domestic abuse felt tepid and afternoon school special-y, and the characters themselves feel very similar to Sam and Lia from Anders' "The Wrong Man," which was bothersome because the latter two characters actually showed up in this story and it made me think, "Huh, remember how awesome Sam and Lia were?"

Charity Cole's husband was a monster but no-one would believe her if she told them, so she has changed her name and given up her career to be a housekeeper for a billionaire at his holiday home. Her boss and his family rarely visit so she can stay holed up, rarely venturing into town, hidden away from the world.

Miles Hollingsworth is a self-made billionaire who looks after his family as best he can, but after he nearly died from a virus he ignored, the doctor has advised him to take a complete break for several weeks and Miles decides to stay in his holiday home where the dour Mrs Cole keeps everything running with military precision. But when he arrives unexpectedly, he finds that the woman he has always seen as a middle-aged, repressed, buttoned-up, automaton is actually a gorgeous woman with amazing legs helping herself to a snack from his refrigerator.

Cut off in the house by storms and the bridge being washed away Miles and Charity give in to their passion, but can they keep this as a holiday romance?

See my other recent reviews, I've been a bit of a Debbie-downer and I've DNF'd more books than I would like, so at least I finished this one, right? I just didn't feel this one, I am so tired of abusive exes and billionaires and contrived situations, I love Natasha Anders but this one was just okay for me.

Victims of domestic abuse, you are not alone!!!
Raw book with scenes of domestic abuse (memories), it was hard to read.
I loved this hero, he is patient, funny, caring boyfriend, his way with this stray puppy were such a tender thing to look at. Not egomaniac, thinking first about his family and his woman and not about his needs.
I liked this heroine a lot, she was through a lot, painful marriage, she cut herself from her family, friends... But she is a strong tough cookie, she made herself alive, like fenix.
Slow burn, although they were together at 50-60%.
They were separated.
SHE was dating at this time
He was not. Was not a playboy before meeting her. He calls himself “awkward” with people.
He was faithful. She was as well through their separation.
Safe read.

I have mixed feelings about this book. The actual writing is excellent, but my problem is with the slow moving story. I'm not a fan of excess inner monologue in a romance and this one has it in spades. Especially the first two chapters - I zoned out. Charity has been the housekeeper at this holiday home somewhere in South Africa for 3 years and Miles (the owner) decides to go there in winter (from an English summer) to recover after a long illness. She's around the age of 30 and the family thinks she's near 50. Take down your hair and wear casual clothes and your real age is revealed. Miles is instantly taken with Charity, but she is still recovering from an abusive marriage (which he doesn't know about) and while her body is interested in him, she doesn't want to be. Miles finds a puppy, so there's lots of scenes involving the dog that are quite entertaining.

I enjoyed the H/h's dialogue/banter when it appeared and I think if there had been a lot of culling of additional information, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more. It would have been shorter, but hey, nothing really happened, so that would have been fine with me. Also, I did not like the pages of description about the synopsis of Miles's si-fi audio book. Unnecessary information. Also, there is lots of background blurb surrounding side characters who pop into the story briefly. What they're doing, who they are, what they look like, etc.

The romance was slow burn, but I just wasn't convinced about it. Lots of push and pull and denial and inner monologue on both sides. Lots of telling, rather than showing. Unfortunately, this is not my type of story, although lots of other readers loved it. I have several of this author's books on my kindle and I do intend to read them. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me the e-ARC in return for my honest opinion. 2.5 stars.

4 Stars!

First off, thanks to Netgalley for a copy to read and review!

I've been missing some Natasha Anders in my life! WOAH!

This story starts off with Charity who is the live in housekeeper for Mr. Miles Hollingsworth. His name happens to be the most snooty thing in this world so I was expecting a rude and entitled rich boy. He was not that at all--he was sweet, caring, gentle, patient AND SUCH AN ADORABLE NERD! All the qualities that Charity needed in a partner. Charity's strength with what she experienced was a sight to read about.

This book should have come with a trigger warning because of the past situation of Charity and all she faced with her ex, it was so brutal and heartbreaking. She locked herself from the world, unwilling to let her self love and be loved for 3 years.

Reading about her journey to recovery was a tough one but so well done. It's very apparent Anders did a lot of research in terms of the repercussions of abuse and how one moves on from life after facing that brutality. I honestly commend the author in the process of which Charity underwent to achieve her happily ever after.

The writing once again, is just amazing and full of wonderful prose. I think it's very telling of the author's writing when they have the ability to make their characters real and relatable. While, I never experienced these situations, I was still able to connect with these characters and feel their emotions.

I will say however, the beginning was a bit slow and it took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did, I was hooked--I stayed up until the early hours of the morning glued to my reader because I fell in love with these characters and their story. They deserved to find happiness.

I really enjoyed this read and I look forward to more awesome books by Natasha Anders!

The Best Next Thing follows Charity our female lead, who experienced something terrible and has been hiding out, working as Miles's housekeeper in his vacation house until she is ready to join the world again. Miles has always been the grumpy, cold closed off boss who always left her alone when he visited his holiday home, he never really had taken a good look at the mysterious housekeeper that made sure that everything was as he wished during his stay.

But then when Miles overworks and even ends up in the ICU because of it. He decides to move into his holiday house for a good while to recover, he suddenly realizes that there is more to his mysterious housekeeper then meets the eye.

The Best Next Thing is a beautifully written story about overcoming traumatic experiences and finding a second chance at love.
