And a mysterious death that brings them under the same roof.
When I learn I’ve inherited a house in Salem, I’m sure it’s a mistake.
Besides, I have zero desire to return to a town where I’m an outcast.
The surprises continue when I meet my tenants, including a broody vampire and a foodie wolf shifter.
But I’m only staying around long enough to sell my long lost aunt’s house.
Even when they convince me to go to a Halloween ball.
Even when I agree to pretend to be the vampire’s girlfriend.
Even when I discover his softer and oh-so-sexier side.
Because a witch without magic in Salem makes as much sense as a pig with wings. And I’ve never seen one fly.

I have this in my library because the summary seems intriguing and fun. And I don't have much expectation either. I really just started this blindly but seeing the ratings (4.25 stars), I am hopeful for it to be good than expected.
The premise is definitely promising but the execution was unfortunately, poorly done. Supernatural books are one of my favs, but this one is way more laidback and I think the author really just went for a quick and light read. I felt like it's really rushed and underdeveloped.
The mystery element on finding the "dark magic" or the cause of Nova's aunt's death is probably the only thing I enjoyed. It makes the book interesting enough to read but again, it was not as extensive as I hope it will be. The revelation was a hurtle with little to no details which are disappointing. I couldn't also feel connected with the romance in this book as it was badly presented. The relationship progresses unsmoothly and escalated really quick to the point that I don't find myself enjoying them.
Nova as a witch is also badly outlined but I think her character is accentuated the best compared to Diego or the rest of the supernaturals in the book (lycan, siren and dragon). The author stereotypically attributed the characters to the myth/stereotypes. Like Diego, a vampire who sucks blood and can't walk in the sun. Apart from that, he is as mundane as "normal" human beings with no other special superpowers. As I said, maybe that was not the direction that the author is going for, but no harm in making the book more interesting.
The fact that this book could have been better is a shame. Else, it can be an enjoyable read for me!
I liked the story overall and it was a quick read, but there were a few flaws that dragged down my star rating. The writing was way too simple, the characters were shallow, and the ending was rushed and not satisfying.

Life changes drastically for Nova when her aunt that she hasn't seen for years leaves her house and inheritance to her. Surprise, the tenants are three supernaturals. Not familiar with sups she finds the three fun and people who could be her friends. Especially Diego, the vampire. Another surprise—she's a witch, really. Why do people start telling her that?
This is the beginning of a series I am anxious to read. The first book is a winner. Do you like PNR? Steam? Great characters? Wonderful world-building? Really bad bad-guys? Then this one is for you. Don't miss it.
Nova & Diego's story was fresh, fun and flat out fantastic! This book quickly had me hooked with its lovable characters and its well written storyline. A smartly crafted blend of humor, romance, twists, steam and mystery fills up the pages and has you eager to sneak every minute you can to read just a little bit more. Altogether a wonderful read that left me very excited to read more books in this new series. I am posting a independent, impartial review.
I really enjoyed Nova's story. It was a great story that started off with Nova learning her Aunt passed away. Not realizing that her new adventure and life had just begun. I really liked and appreciated all the many characters as well as learning all about Nova, her Aunt, and her family back story. I can't wait to read the next book.
Nova a witch with no magical abilities to speak of has left her hometown of Salem and now lives as a mundane in New York working two jobs, one at a children’s publishing house and the other as a waitress in a diner neither of which give her any feeling of satisfaction. She has no intention of returning to Salem that is until she receives news that her aunt, Margaret Goodwell, has died and left Nova her estate including her house which has some unusual tenants, Sabastian a wolf shifter who's a chef, Diego a vampire who works at a healing centre and Lucas a half-dragon stripper.
Nova has no idea what she'll do with her inheritance or the tenants, should she just sell everything and go back to New York? Or should she stay and try to find out just how her Aunt Margaret died?
This is an entertaining fun read, it's well-written and has some really interesting characters including Witches, Vampires, Shifters, a Demon, and a Half-Siren. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
I read an ARC of this book and am voluntarily writing my review.
Omg! Ms. Carlisle has done it again! “REBEL SPELL” is the 1st new page-turner from the brand new series ‘Salem Supernaturals’ :) Another one of her 5 star must reads that grabbed me from the get-go with a fresh, unique plot, magic, shifters, & demons; romance & suspense! ... I loved the relatable characters, both the H/h, Nova & Diego, & the interesting secondary characters! Ms. Carlisle provides the always clever dialogue with great descriptions & surprise twists, so that I was glued to my seat not wanting to stop when real life got in the way! ... Even tho I volunteered to read this in advance, it was without any outside influences and these are my own feelings! Also I do buy kindle ebooks whenever I am able, so I can honestly recommend this to Adult 18+ fans of fiction and can’t wait for more- but I will ;)
Nova is a young witch without powers she believes and is not making it like she was hoping to in New York City, she works for a publisher but she is only an assistant and she had to take a 2nd job just to make ends meet. On her way to work, one day something strange happens and she receives a call from a witch lawyer in Salem, Ma. with news some very bad, and some that could be considered good. In Salem, she meets three guys Sebastian, Lucas, and Diego, one of them will be special. Great storyline and the characters were very interesting. Drama, magical suspense, romance, and adventure. Enjoyable book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Nova is a failed witch heading back to Salem for an inheritance
What I enjoyed: * I liked the roommates - Sebastian and Lucas
What could have been better: * The writing style didn't work for me * It seemed rushed, had insta-love and both leads were snapping at each other for no good reason * The supernatural agency was awful *
I'd rate this at 2.5 ... right smack dab in the middle.
I finished this last night and when I went to write my summary in my journal I couldn't remember much about the book or its characters. I had to skim back into the chapters to remember names and what they did or who they were, i.e. whatever shifter they happened to be. That, unfortunately, summarizes the book.
I'd say that the book was a good no-brainer read. The type that you pick up, you read it, and then you forget it. Nothing in particular is drawn out enough to remember. Most of the details, including the people, are very underdeveloped. But it's the perfect read to rest your brain ... which clearly I did. Normally my reviews are much longer, but I don't have anything to say because I can't remember much.
Will I continue with the series? Maybe at some point. I'm not in any rush to put the other two I have on my Kindle, on my TBR, so perhaps I will but I may not. If I need another read like this to rest my brain, I might.
Nova, a witch with no magic, inherits a house in Salem when her aunt dies. She finds out that not everything she thought she knew was the truth. She also found out that her aunt did not die of natural causes! Will she decide to stay and solve her aunt’s murder? And with one of her three supernatural tenants interested in her, would she stick around a little longer to see where this relationship with the broody vampire Diego might end up?
Unexpected homecoming Such a fantastic introduction to the quirky side of magic and love. I loved Nova! She is adrift in the world until she suddenly gets handed the life that will ground her, I enjoyed her uncertainty and her openness to whatever comes her way. Diego is the perfect match for her, if he can overcome his own history. The dark mysterious vampire has a way with him that brings light into the dark. The author did a wonderful job keeping the story interesting and I love how they handled the danger that threatened their sense of peace. This book was amazing, and I can’t wait to see what happens in book two.
This was a fab series opener, full of drama, humour, suspense, mystery and romance. I loved the characters and details for clear world-building. It's smoothly written and had all the elements to have me madly turning pages to see how things would unfold. All great fun and I'm looking forward to the next book!
What a fun and quirky read. I enjoyed the story line and characters immensely. It was fun, energetic and entertaining. The characters are paranormal and what better place to have the story take place then Salem. Home of the weird and creepy!
Overall this book had a good plot, with excellent characters. The story flowed smoothly throughout and did not have any dull moments. It has the perfect mix of danger and romance. I give this book a heat level of six! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Think cozy mystery with a dirty side! Can’t wait to read more
Cute pretty quick read. I want to read the next in the series at some point. It has romance, supernatural (witches, vampires, demons, werewolves and more) and an interesting plot. The only issue I had was it seemed it moved rather fast but considering it’s a shorter quick read, I suppose I understand.
The book is a good, and enjoyable paranormal romance read. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry. The story has magical suspense, drama, adventure, mystery, humor, romance, and love.

This was a fun and sweet paranormal witchy romance. Nova and Diego are so cute and to watch the mystery and romance unfold was fun... and yes Lisa, I think I know who Sebastian is tracking. ;-)

Nova receives word that her aunt Margaret, died and left the house to her. How can that be? She hardly knew her aunt and her own mother rarely speaks of her sister. When she returns to Salem for the first time in years, she finds the house and it appears that she has inherited some tenants as well. In the land of supes, of course they are a super bunch! Diego, the lost vampire, Sébastian, the wolf shifter and Lucas, the lady killer dragon shifter reluctantly greeted her and wondered how their lives were going to change. Here's this stranger, a human, who now has control of where and how they live. Nova isn't real clear about her identity, but she does know that she nearly killed her entire family, when she was a girl, as she cast a spell and it turned to literal fire. Her tenants realize, rather quickly, that she is not human and they sense the magic in her. This is a delightful story, the first in the Salem Supernaturals series. Ms. Carlisle sets the stage effectively, introduces a group of unique characters and delivers a bewitching story of spells, love, friendship and a mystery with major consequences. Following along with Nova, in her quest to find her true nature and as she finds her true love, is a journey that should not be missed!
Rebel Spell Vampires, Shifters, Witches, Half-Siren and a Demon! There is so much to like in this book. I am excited there is a brand-new series from Lisa Carlisle! Nova is riding on the subway when she feels a jolt that shakes her and knocks her book to the floor. She feels her body tingling head to toe. No one else feels anything. This small event starts Nova on a new path. Nova lives and works in New York. She has a job at a children’s publishing house and her second job as a waitress at a diner. Nova is a witch without any magical talent. She lives and works as a mundane. She left her hometown of Salem. I know what you are thinking – a witch from Salem! Hahaha. Nova tried the magic life but almost burned down her home when she was young. Now she gets a voicemail from a lawyer at the Salem Supernatural Network. It says to call her back ASAP. Her aunt, Margaret Goodwell, passed away and left her the estate that includes a house. It might not be so bad to go for a quick visit. She can catch up with her best friend, Gianna, a half-siren. Gianna own and runs a retro rock club on Salem’s north shore called the Danger Zone. There are tenants to deal with that live in Aunt Margaret’s house. These guys are an interesting bunch. Diego is a handsome vampire that works at a healing center. Sebastian is a wolf shifter Chef and Lucas is a half-dragon stripper. What will Nova do with all this inherited wealth, house and tenants? Stay and learn about how Aunt Margaret died or sell everything and go back to working two unfulfilling job? Then there is the Halloween Ball. I loved the references to Mary Katherine Gallagher and Monty Python. The music references just put you right into the book. I laughed out loud at the scrabble game. I am hooked on a new series and this makes me happy!
This is book one of the Salem Supernaturals series and the main character is Nova Adams who is struggling to make ends meet in New York City, working in her lowly paid job as an editorial assistant in a children’s publishing house, which is part of her dream to bring books to all children, but doesn’t pay well enough, so she also works as a waitress in a diner. Fighting on the subway, to and fro from her shared apartment isn’t her favourite, but she left her childhood home in Salem, as being a witch with no magical talent at all, other than nearly burning down the house with her parents in it when she was five, is bad enough in a place like Salem. With her parents living separate lives, she left for NY as soon as she could, to make a name for herself. When a lawyer calls her from Salem Supernatural Network, it is with the sad news that her aunt Margaret Goodwell has died. Someone she hasn’t seen since she was a young child, with a falling out happening between her mother and her sister! She has somehow inherited her aunt’s home, which has tenants still in it, as well as a large sum of money. She takes some time off to go and sign all the relevant paperwork and sort out her aunt’s estate, but also ends up meeting the three tenants, Sebastian a wolf shifter and head chef at a local restaurant, Lucas a dragon shifter and exotic stripper, and then Diego a newly made vampire, who works nights in a lab of a healing centre. Diego agreed to become a vampire, when his vampire fiancé persuaded him they would be together forever, only to break up with him six months after he was turned. He hasn’t gotten over Diana, and has spent some eighteen months pretty much skulking around the house, with all the blinds and curtains shut. Nova isn’t sure what to do about the house, wanting to get back to her life in NY, but soon starts to realise she hasn’t even thought about it as the week progresses. She gets to meet her old friend Gianna, who runs a club, Danger Zone and tries to sign Nova up for a singles night event as well. Gianna is half siren, so her club is the perfect atmosphere and job for her. Problems arise, when another witch is killed and Nova has a paralysing dream, and feels signs of black magic around her aunt’s bedroom, where she died. One of the people she speaks to about it, tells her of a friend who had a similar event and another that Nova does have magic, something she has disbelieved for nearly her whole life. She has to work hard to clear out all the clutter in her aunt’s separate side of the house and her attic magic room, where she makes a surprising discovery. She is persuaded to go to a Halloween Ball and even to act as the reclusive vampire’s date, to show his ex he has moved on. After being really frightened by his scary figure to start with, she has now seen his softer and protective side and even with Nova’s somewhat up and down attitude towards him, he has always ended up wanting to look out for her. She felt like an outcast in Sale, with no magic, but she may now have found somewhere she belongs and is needed. An interesting mix of characters and an unusual living situation. The storyline moved along at a fair pace and there was a definite sense of danger, with a fight against someone stealing magic and only wanting more power. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Rebel Spell begins the Salem Supernaturals series with a charming, fun, smoldering, and dangerous tale that quickly caught my attention and held it through the ending… when I wanted more.
Nova is a witch who doesn’t seem to have magical abilities. Well, she might have started a fire that terrified her parents when she was very young, but nothing since that event – and how can a witch who has no magic really call herself a witch? She moved from her hometown of Salem (yes, that Salem) to New York City where she works for a children’s book publishing house and has a side job as a waitress – it is, after all, NYC where the rent is not cheap! All that is about to change when she feels an unsettling punch to her nervous system that basically knocked her to the floor of the subway but, surprisingly, no one else noticed the sudden jolt. Yet, that moment is the beginning of a strange and wonderful adventure for Nova – and decisions that will change her life are just ahead.
I enjoyed Nova and Diego’s story. There is world-building, in the first story of a new series there has to be some. I wasn’t overwhelmed by details, everything I needed to know flowed easily through the story’s narrative and dialogue. Nova will discover that her aunt that she’s lost contact with over the years has died and left her estate, her home to Nova. Oh, and her aunt was definitely a practicing witch who had three gentlemen renting rooms in the house… supernatural gentlemen, that is. As Nova heads back to Salem to decide what to do with this sudden windfall and catch up with a good friend, Gianna (a half-siren), who owns a retro bar in Salem she’s about to walk right into danger and discover the love of her life… if she makes the choice of letting herself believe in love. But did her aunt die of natural causes or did something magical steal her life from her. This quick trip home suddenly becomes so much more.
Rebel Spell has everything I need to dive right into a new series. A tempting mystery, danger, a tortured man who will do anything to win the hand of his lady, secondary characters who bring the world to life and knowing that I’ll devour their stories one day as well, and a heroine who has a lot to discover about herself while she chases down evil and falls in love. I had a blast in the Salem Supernaturals world, and I can’t wait until I can return in June for Hot in Witch City.

Nova has been overworked while trying to make it in in NYC and using public transit working extra shifts at her two jobs just to make ends meet. Some of the time she loves it, but it is hard. While on the train a strange thing happens. Then a few days later, she receives a voicemail from a lawyer with the Salem Supernatural Network, asking her to call back. There had been a scary incident involving a spell gone awry when she was 5ish and she hadn’t been back to Salem since high school. She finds out that her Aunt, Margaret Goodwell had passed away a few days ago and that she had left her estate to Nova, including a house that her Aunt had split with tenants. So Nova figures she’d spend a week there and probably sell the place because she needs the money to live in NYC and get back to her jobs. Poor Nova immediately gets totally stressed out. Nova’s parents had split up and her mom is egocentric, to say the least. One of friends, the closest, still lived in Salem, Gianna. So she gives her a call and tells her what is going on. Gianna is way cool, she is part siren and owns a nightclub that’s theme is 80s and the 90s. I really enjoyed stuff that happened there. Nova’s plans go awry as things go a bit crazy. She meets her 3 tenants: Diego the vampire, and the wolf shifter chef, Sebastian and Lucas who is a dragon shifter who is an exotic dancer. Seb and Lucas constantly razz Diego. Upon Nova’s arrival, Diego freaks. The guys give him a talking to and things get funnier. OMG. There are so many funny things in this book. I loved it so much! It has the great songs of the 80s and 90s and other mentions of that time. As well as weird happenings and spells. Lucas is abso hilarious and a riot. Outrageous and crazy. Diego and the guys end up going to the Supernatural Ball with Nova and talk her into something crazy. The guys also have a cat named Shadow. I love that cat. Of course, it is Nova that Diego is drawn to, and vice versa. Things get stranger when Nova begins going thru Margaret’s stuff. Then it just gets crazier and scarier. Finding out what really happened when Nova was little was heartbreaking. A lot of the book made me chew on my nails, put the AC on both for the steam and because I was fear sweating. Lol. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

When Nova unexpectedly inherits her aunt’s house in Salem, she doesn’t know what she’s going to do with the place – or the three men renting space and living there. When she meets Diego – one of the boarders – sparks ignite. But can a failed witch with a life elsewhere and a vampire find lasting happiness?
A dash of mystery swirls through this first-in-a-series witch and vampire romance. Carlisle brings to life a town full of various supernatural beings living comfortably together, introducing a variety of sympathetic characters. I enjoyed getting to know Nova as she found her feet in this version of Salem, and the interactions between Nova and her various new and old friends. Nova and Diego’s blossoming romance is fun, and there are several couples that readers have to look forward to finding their happily every afters, I have no doubt. Nova learning about herself and her heritage was interesting as well, though overall I did wish that the story had a little more oomph to it. I really look for a lot of emotion in my romance, and Rebel Spell focuses more on the paranormal plot and introducing Salem and the various creatures who people it. The series has a lot of promise, and I’m sure that Rebel Spell and the Salem Supernaturals will hit the spot for a variety of readers of paranormal romance even if it wasn’t quite what I look for in a romance story.

It's a highly entertaining fiction story with a witch and a vampire, which I found at times had terrific satire. What would you expect with a combination like that? It was a lot of fun, although some might construe it as a bit horrifying. But I have always been a fan of witches and vampires, which satisfies my macabre side. If we're being truthful with ourselves, we all function from the gray areas of our inner being knowing that we have both light and dark when presenting ourselves to the world. Some may think others don't see it, but I believe humanity is much more enlightened than most people think. If they believe they are hiding their dark side from the world, they are fooling themselves. This book was a great example of that concept with a brilliant story and a few plot twists you'll enjoy.
Knowing it's the beginning of a series, this will be my go-to when I need some fun in my world of imagination. I'll bet Lisa, the author, is a fun woman to chat with on a rainy day with tea, perhaps even a brandy or some sherry.
