this one didn't do me too many favors, it wasn't mind-blowingly amazing, kinda mid to be honest. there was a lot of underlying social and political themes at play but i feel like they weren't really brought into the spotlight. i liked that there was a broad cast of characters but they also kind of felt shallow!

in terms of plot, it really didn't start picking up until i was significantly into the book itself and it wasn't driving me forward, which i expect out of a mystery book. the style of writing was nowhere near juicy enough for my tastes, it was kind of dry and hazy. the relationships between characters were a little too undefined and hindered the clarity of the plot structure. what i DID like about this book were the cinematic little pockets of time: the crowded bar anticipating the outcome of a government election, the ambiguity of a friends with benefits relationship, nighttime lovers sharing their visions with each other, friends watching famous movies at a bar together. while these gave the novel some breathing room they didn't feel too connected to the major plotline. ultimately the stakes didn't feel high enough to me and it was hard to connect to the characters outside of these gentle moments they had.

ultimately i'm gonna say it's safe to skip this one, maybe a little more cohesive or redeemable if you understand the politics its built on but too nebulous otherwise. <3
