Quinn has a rare and powerful gift, one that manifested from the rage and trauma of her harrowing childhood. Years later, the anger she can't let go of makes her an unpredictable and dangerous weapon of last resort for a kingdom on the brink of war. Diviners like Quinn are venerated yet feared, protected yet exploited. Bonded to the Queen, they are forced to endure hardship and sacrifice to protect her empire. After a near loss in a key battle and the death of the Diviner of Fire, the Queen calls for aid from the elite soldiers of the allied territories to the East. A striking warrior named Kiran is assigned to protect and train Quinn, and as the pair become close despite the rules that bind them, they discover that the enemies within are just as dangerous as the ones at the gates.
Time is running out for Quinn to harness her power. The enemy is closing in around them. Impossible sacrifices haunt every decision Quinn makes. As she fights to keep what little she's claimed as hers, Quinn learns that her destiny might not lie in the hands of fates or kingdoms, but in her own.
Praise for The Diviner
" The Diviner is a wonderfully immersive fantasy set in a carefully crafted magical world and is as much a deeply emotional love story as a suspenseful adventure. The slow burn became an inferno." - W.D. Henning, author of Paradise Blight and Dark Fall
" The Diviner is intricately written, and not like any fantasy story you've read before. This book will get you hooked and you’ll build special connections with the characters… (you’ll) love Quinn of course, but you’ll also fall in love with Kiran, Skye, Adri, and Rolfe. The Diviner is worth the read – every second you spend on it is not wasted." - Aina Untalan, author of Exes and Ohs
"Quinn is an actual badass instead of being a damsel in distress, which I hardly ever get to see in books." - Court of Miracles Awards (Finalist)
”Fans of fantasy romance series like From Blood And Ash and A Discovery of Witches will love The Diviner.” – D. Samms
You mean I can review my own book? Heck yeah. I think I'll take myself up on that offer :)
I genuinely love the hell out of this book. I loved writing it, even on the days when it was tough to put more than a few words to (digital) paper. The days where a chapter came to life quickly felt like stuffing 200 fizzy pop candies into my mouth and downing a bottle of coke. I mean, in the best possible way, not in a Pepto Bismol-inducing, 'what have I done with my life' kind of way.
The characters are real people for me. I'm almost convinced they exist out there in the world independent of my imaginings. They are distinct people, with nuances and complexities, shortcomings and hidden desires and internal conflicts. Some of the things that happen to them.... well, I won't give anything away, but there were times I wasn't sure I wanted to write those outcomes. It broke my heart to steer them through some of their experiences. Sometimes, I even cried for them. But even when it hurt, I did what I felt was right. It was as though they were whispering to me in the dark when I was falling asleep, or when I was going about morning chores, or when I was daydreaming about this story that's taken over my life. They showed me what to do, and so I did it.
If you have read my book, thank you. If you're thinking about it, I hope you give it a shot. And I hope that I did these characters and their story justice. That's what I wanted most, to be able to tell a story of love and anger, of pain and growth, of loyalty and friendship, and to have it feel real. As said by the MC, Quinn: "I am the surface of their memory, reflecting them back to the world." (I just totally quoted myself and I'm not even mad about it.)
Really enjoyed this book and was a nice break from some of the more intense and experimental literature I've been diving into this year. Definitely worth reading if you're wanting something light, but also well constructed and witty with likeable characters. It sort of put me back into the mindset of being 14 years old and staying up late all night - despite having school - to finish reading the next volume of a David Eddings saga.
DNF at 30% I'm putting this one on ⏸️ pause. My mind keeps wandering, my reading bubble didn't make it. It's too long, too soft. Something doesn't work here. Too bad, the idea was good.
loved this book! 😍 ✨ Quinn, the MC, is such a badass. She Is that type of character who doesn't give a fuck but actually she does! ✨ Kiran, OMG, i want to marry him. I love every single aspect of him and i want to know more about his secrets ✨ Every single character in this story Is fantastic but i want to shout out my girl Skye because she Is the true star of this book. She Is in the cover so you know she Is super cool and also a viper 🐍 ✨ If you like romantic fantasy, found family trope, deep friendships, a lot of amazing couples to ship, animals that call you out, witches, mates, gods and goddesses and individuals with unique powers: you need to check this book. Bonus reasons? Stunning covers in both, book 1 and 2 😍
🍭I cant wait to read The Elysian because The diviner's ending was a fucking bomb. Not cool leaving your readers like that Brynne😂 but oh well, book 2 Is going to be release soon so we forgive you 🤎
TW: Abuse, emotional abuse, and slicing into arms for rituals.
Thank you Brynne for the ARC! I honestly was not sure if I would enjoy this book because I was a bit confused with the synopsis and how the Diviner concept worked. But omg this turned out to be one of my favourite books of the year. I thought the worldbuilding was pretty well done and I thought the concept of Diviners was really neat! Also I was so happy that there was a queen with a commander ranked husband because yasss queen 🤣 I was so invested in the characters and I loved the camaraderie between all the Diviners (except she who shall not be named). All the little quips the characters make about their Diviner family is so cute and just makes their bond seem that much stronger. I thought the friendship between Adri and Quinn was so strong and a great example of a sisterhood friendship. The way they support each other is so admirable. I also totally shipped Adri and Rolfe. Ansel was also so fun and such a mood. It was also really nice to see a relationship between Kiran and Quinn develop and not be so insta-love. (Sidenote: I love how they actually mention contraception and have consent in their lovey scenes.) Also what happens between Kiran and Quinn when she has to reaffirm her bonds to the Queen omg I just died. Such heartbreak. I love how supportive Kiran is of Quinn though, it’s like unconditional and beautiful. Ooh and the battle scenes were so detailed and epic! Plot-wise there were some bits that didn’t really make too much sense logically but it was such a great story overall and I need the next book now thanks 🤣
I LOVED this book! Everything in it was pure perfection! There's just something magical about the way Brynne brings this new world to life and gives you an inside look in how things run and work. Quinn (the main character) was a complete BADASS, Kiran was every girl's dream man and the other characters added to the story so well! Romance, fantasy, adventure, all the things you could love are in this book! Can't wait to read this over and over again!
The author very kindly sent me a copy of this book after I hosted a small, informal awards on Wattpad and named her in first place. I am very happy that I did because this book is a work of absolute magic. I love fantasy stories and this ticks so many boxes of what makes that genre so interesting: great characters, amazing worldbuilding, tons and tons of political intrigue and mystery, and such an engaging, twisty-turny plot.
The prose is so clean and beautiful. I was in love with so much of the storytelling and the rich, immersive words. Each chapter had such texture to it. Castle Eridanus and the lands around it are described in such intimacy, with intriguing history and small details. You really get a sense of a world with such deep threads running through it. The concepts of magic are so unique - the idea of different Diviners with powers over various elements and forces was amazing! I loved seeing how they blended into the plotline - and what a plotline it is! I was kept guessing all the time, and was so impressed at the amount of different arcs running through it. Each character and event is so structured and blended into the whole, there is not a single dull, filler moment.
Most of all, the characters were fantastic. I was rooting for Quinn all the way, but I loved how she had such a dark, troubled side too. What I hate about some fantasies is that authors come down way too hard on the Strong Female Character trope, and it just becomes cliche and too perfect. Quinn is a fabulous character, full of depth and nuance, able to hate and love in equal measures, and want vengeance but also peace and safety for her friends. The way she treated her loved ones was my favourite part of this book. It really nailed the Found Family trope - I loved Adri and Kiran and Ansel and Angitia. Such a diverse and interesting cast! Oh, and of course Skye, Quinn’s loyal ‘attack snake’. I mean, what’s not to love about that?
Overall, this is a truly impressive book, I loved every moment! I got chills in some parts, which I don’t often get when reading haha. I can’t wait to read more!
I read the author's Butcher and Blackbird book and adored it, so hen tried this as another of her books. Sadly, it didn't work out for me.
I need at least one of two things in a book: decent world building and an interesting plot, and/or characters you adore. This didn't deliver in either and at about 50% I just got bored and decided life's too short to pick up a book you don't really want to.
The concept was interesting but not developed. The characters had potential, but fell a bit flat. The romance felt very shallow and I just wasn't invested.
But this might well be a case of 'igs not you, it's me'!
I loved this book. It invested me emotionally. I fell in love with the characters. I couldn’t wait to pick it back up. Brynne, if you are reading this, I desperately need you to right a sequel. It can’t stop there! Please. PS you are a brilliant author ❤️.
So I really enjoyed the story. And I love the characters. And the storyline kept my interest from beginning to end. But there was no ending, Nothing got resolved. We have no idea what happened why it happened. There were so many plot holes that I am angry. Now that I spent all this time reading the story for it not to have an ending. How do you publish a book without a real conclusive ending? This hurts my heart to give a bad review because I have loved everything else I’ve read by this author, but I want everyone going in to know that they will just have to make up their own conclusion I suppose. There is no mention of this being a series to justify the abrupt cliffhanger ending. If that turns out to be the case I will edit my review for sure.
I got snagged by the absolute girl power and then gripped through every page by the wit, the anger, the lust, the love, the betrayal, the imperfection. The characters are well written, and you come to feel for them all through their bond with Quinn and each other. I mean, I cheered for a snake. Come on! How do you get people to love a snake as a character all its own when it is in a magical world weaving book? Making it absolutely badass. That is how.
Obviously, I’ll be awaiting the release of the sequel. The magic in this one is very wonderfully unique, and I hope to see it expanded as we go through the series.
This book has everything I didn't know I needed. The perfect break from my usual genres, plenty of adventure, likable characters (especially special snake Skye), a love story that defies all odds, magic, fantasy. Everything I needed! There were twists and turns I didn't expect, I was on the edge of my seat for some chapters. It's just simply a beautiful read. Well done, Brynne. I'm endlessly impressed with your novels!
In the beginning of the book we are introduced to Quinn. With her parents dead she has been living with her uncle, who was abusive to her. In order to get rich he decided to take her on a hunting trip. Whilst drunk he used Quinn as bait which resulted in her calling on the spiders and the viper for protection. That is when her diviner powers unlocked as the diviner of the beasts. Throughout the book we see Quinn’s powers grow, which started when Kiran touched her arms resulting in her calling upon numerous animals. Her feelings for Kiran allowed her power to unlock fully which just amazed me. What broke my heart a little was when Quinn saw Kiran and a girl together before the ball. She then decided she needed to let her feelings for him go, she was trying to put his happiness before hers since they were forbidden to be together. However as she pushes him away a lot in this book i wish she would just admit her feelings for him and find her own happiness.
"You are so beautiful. A blade twists in my heart every time I look at you." This has to be my favourite quote from this book. My heart genuinely fluttered when i read it. I smiled so much and the fact that this then lead to them both having their first kiss made my heart want to burst. Their chemistry and tension built up so much throughout the book that when they finally let go it was such a relief.
I loved Kiran the moment we were introduced to him, he is just so sweet to Quinn. He fully supported her throughout this book and wanted to help her grow into a stronger version of herself. When he pushed at her to help control her anger i rooted for this relationship. Also the fact that he decided to escort her back to the sanctuary from afar when she said she would be okay just made me swoon. It was so obvious he cared for her and wanted to ensure she was safe. Another moment where i loved Kiran was at training when he had to ask Rikar to take over so he could see the captain. When he came back and saw that Rikar wasn’t going easy on Quinn at all he went into straight protective mode. Full on touch her and you die, i definitely experienced a mixture of squealing and swooning. This man is too good. The moment where we found out he was a diviner was the biggest plot twist of all time. I was so shocked about this, i didn’t see it coming at all, i had to stop reading for a little while to fully process the information.
A side character i loved the moment i was introduced to her was Adri. The fact that she was always their for Quinn just made me love their friendship, especially when Quinn returns the favour. I hated the fact that she had an arranged marriage and wished she’d find a way out of it, which she did. When her relationship with Rolfe progressed to her admitting she loved him made me swoon. I fully shipped their relationship from the start so when she admitted her feelings i was elated. I also loved the fact that Rolfe will fight against the kings and queens to keep Adri and their baby safe, my heart couldn’t take it. It was just such a sweet thing to say, i swooned so hard.
Characters i hated in this book are pretty obvious, I definitely disliked the queen. The fact that she arranged Quinn to marry another diviner in order to bring her some ‘happiness’ was insane! Kiran was obviously the one bringing her happiness. The fact that Brogan decided to tell the queen that she saw Quinn manipulate metal when she threw that dagger straight threw another made my blood boil. I cant believe how disloyal she was to Quinn, all to get in the queens good books. Especially when she told the queen that Quinn and Kiran were getting closer, i fully supported Quinn’s actions against her, she 100% had that coming to her. Then the mage is another character i hated, her putting a protection spell on her bonds so Kiran cant touch Quinn made me so angry. These three characters annoyed me so much, like couldn’t they just leave Quinn and Kiran alone to love one another in peace! Since Quinn is bond and cant leave she should at least give her the freedom to love who she chooses.
Overall, I have no words for the ending, none. The cliffhanger was so dirty, I’m going to be thinking about the ending of this book for a while now. I have so many questions and no answers. I 100% enjoyed this book, I have read this authors other books so i thought id give this one a chance boy am i glad i did. The plot line intrigued me and i loved the characters too, hopefully there will be a sequel to this book, i would definitely read it.

are you kidding me right now??????????? i don’t even have the capacity to put into words what this book made me feel. i..i’m in awe. absolutely overcome.
**edit - i picked my jaw up off the floor long enough to type this review:
Quinn, our FMC, has a rare gift that stems from the trauma and pain of her childhood. Now older and with the Kingdom on the brink of a war, Quinn’s finds out that her powers can be manifested in different ways, and motivated by different feelings. This story brings us along on Quinn’s journey of finding love amidst sacrifice, longing, and pain.
Not enough people are talking about this book and how incredible of a debut novel it is. The characters in this book felt so real to me; they hurt, they push, they fight, they withdraw, and through it all they remain consistent. I appreciated that Quinn was a strong female lead character, and her powers came from within and weren’t just a “given” thing. I loved how she is supported in her journey of trying to harness her powers and allowing herself to guide them and not vise versa. There was mutual respect and a soft love that is literally to die for. The world was something I could easily picture, thanks to Brynne’s ability to weave a captivating picture of the Kingdom and the statuses. I loved everything about this book and I need a sequel like right now.
Oh my magical HEART, "The Deviner" by Brynne Weaver is an absolute gem! Quinn, our fierce and sassy main character, is a total badass – that 'I-don't-give-a-flying-fuck-but-secretly-I-do' type. And Kiran? LORD JESUS, can we just talk about swoon-worthy Kiran? I'm ready to marry him on the spot,(Minus his secrets) Every character, especially Skye (I hate snakes with ultimate passion but major shoutout to the viper queen on the cover), adds an extra sprinkle of WITCHY VIBE to this tale.
If you're into romantic fantasy, found family vibes, deep friendships, ship-worthy couples, magical creatures that call you out, and a world filled with witches, mates, gods, and goddesses, this is your next must-read! Bonus points for the jaw-dropping covers in both books – a feast for the eyes! But beware, Brynne, that ending was a cliffhanger bombshell! Not cool leaving us hanging like that, it's Brynne Weaver so das okay. Can't wait to dive into the next magical adventure!
I read to switch off and travel away, this book did exactly that. I really enjoyed the quality of the writing, it was really refreshing to have such vibrant descriptions. The actions scenes are incredible, you genuinely feel in the middle of it and can’t wait to get to the next. I usually see two type of page-turner books: the one you go through just because you want to know what’s going to happen and the one where you just can’t get enough of every single word. This is latter. Take a chance, try it, you won’t regret it
I wish I could give this a 4 but 3.5 just barely. It was a great thought, fascinating world( definitely not fleshed out at all) and strong FMC, but so much unexplored territory, I literally checked twice to see if I missed a book previous to this book. Around the 200 page mark everything distracted me, I just was not involved. It got kind of bland and definitely did not have the urgency that part of the book should’ve had. It was good but a lot of room for improvement for sure. It took almost 10 days ( also reading another book, but still) and that speaks volumes.
I really liked the concept of this book, as well as the characters. After reading Butcher and Blackbird, I decided to explore her other books and stumbled upon this one. I was really excited to read it, as I am a huge fantasy fan, however it took me a while to finish because I kept losing focus while reading. I feel like the pacing was off for this book, and made it difficult to stay locked in. I would like to see how these characters develop in the future, especially with the cliffhanger the book ended on.
The idea was fun, but a lot of what worked in the book worked because it has been done before so it's easier to do. The actual world and magic system and relationships weren't very well developed or shown in a way that explained them. Also, the book was clearly supposed to have sequels thst just never happened. Not terrible for what seems to have been a first novel, but the author thrives much better in non magical genres I think. (I still want to read her other fantasy trilogy to be sure though, since maybe having a completed story arc helps the stuff that lacked here)
Totally different than Brynne’s typical writing. But I love the story I love the animals I love Quinn I love Kiran. I’m upset that it ends on a cliffhanger and there’s no second book in sight at the moment…. ‘The Elysian’ and ‘The Resurrectionist' are referenced in the back of her other books hopefully they see the light of day
Wow! I loved it! Unique take on a gift. Is a story of abuse, survival, resilience, and indomable spirit and love ❤️ 😍 sweet, strong and ideal. Read it! You won't be disappointed! I can't wait for the next book !
YAS!! This book is AMAZING & I can't wait for the second book to finally be released :) She leaves it on a cliffhanger and I've been itchy to read the second book!!
Even with waiting I still recommend everyone read this book and enjoy the world Brynne Weaver has created!
i vibed with this book ms. weaver HOWEVER… the cliffhanger had me frantically searching for the sequel while on the treadmill and i can’t find it anywhere. please i need to know what happens
