I am so glad I held on to this series. The author has managed to get the right balance of writing a novel and making it adaptable for manga. As he promised in the afterword to the last volume, Sleeping Murder was a relatively short arc that ended in less than two volumes. This story may seem to standalone, but it also served to move the overarching plot of the story by having the main antagonist influence the events of this arc in the shadows. This series has finally become something that I can enjoy one volume at a time.

Some things were a bit of a stretch, but all in all I enjoyed this two volume murder mystery the most so far out of all the volumes of this series I've read so far - the pacing was excellent, and it was satisfyingly convoluted while not being so complicated that I lost track of important details or people. I think it was also satisfying and a refreshing change of pace to have characters other than Iwanagi-san playing detective and offering solutions.

... Also, although I enjoy that it is unique, Iwanagi and Kuro's whole relationship makes me feel very uneasy, so it's a relief to not have it focused on much during this volume. I appreciate that the ending does make it sound like that uneasiness is intentional on the creators' behalf(s) (...behalves?), which is also as sort of relief. Potentially.

Anyway, I enjoy how twisty turny and yet concise and consistent this series is. Detective Conan just got a bit too ridiculous (after 50 volumes or so?) so I appreciate that this series is easier to stick with.

I always enjoy the word dump nature of In/Spectre, but this volume is aping a traditional Agatha Christie mystery and spends its entire time largely relegated to a single room. It doesn’t make for the most thrilling read.

Kotoko is merciless in this volume, but it fits her perfectly and leads into an interesting ending that appears to be setting up something big. I also really liked Rion, she was a fun character I wouldn’t mind seeing again.

The artwork is as amazing, no surprise there. In/Spectre is probably the must lush book I’m reading right now outside of Witch Hat Atelier.

As always, I hope the slow burn (as in, barely anything at all) between Kuro and Kotoko eventually becomes something. I feel without payoff in that department the story will have been particularly miserable to her in the end. Jury’s still out on that one though.

I read volume 6-11 while on the way to North Carolina. Volume 6 finally ends the Steel Lady Arc, with Kuro and Kotoko getting involved in other cases while looking for Rikka.

The father wanting to have his children figure out how he killed his wife, took up a few volumes, with some confessions causing turmoil within this family.

Rikka kinda being the start as to why Kuro and Kotoko was contacted in the first place. I really wanted Volume 12, but Barnes and Nobles in North Carolina didn't have it so I decided to start Food Wars in the meantime.

Reread on 7/16/22:
Bumped up from 3 to 4 stars.

While following one really long case can get exhausting, this was a really good volume and I genuinely enjoyed watching Kotoko take down this privileged family. I also liked how much of an emotional rollercoaster it was and the family drama was the icing on the cake. Though fun, I'm glad we'll be moving on to another case now, but it was still quite good.

This is the completion of the second serious arc in the series. And although it only lasts two volumes (10 & 11), I liked it better than the original arc (which was interesting but too long). (And I read the English translation.)
