After giving myself up to the Fae, I expected to become the latest casualty of a war that should have ended centuries ago. Instead, I ended up inextricably bound to the last vampire on earth.
My life since the Fae marked me has become unrecognizable. Inside, I’m still the 26-year-old waitress who struggled with working two jobs while being serially dumped by a parade of disgruntled boyfriends. Now, I’ve somehow become a figurehead, coveted, and despised in equal measure by two warring supernatural races.
Can I trust the fragile bond connecting my heart to the unbeating heart of a vampire? Every instinct I possess tells me to pull back...protect myself...protect him. But every time I try to run away, I end up back in his arms.
Alliances are shifting. Old resentments are flaring. Both my father and I are now chess pieces in someone else’s grand strategy.
No more. I’m done with being a pawn.
It’s time to up my game.
The Last Vampire is a steamy new urban fantasy romance series from USA Today bestseller R. A. Steffan and Jaelynn Woolf, co-authors of the Circle of Blood saga.
Download this book today, and enter a world shared by humans, fae, demons, and one very reluctant vampire. It’s a place where the supernatural threatens the mundane, nothing is as it seems, and love will either be the world’s downfall - or its salvation.
USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.
A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.
That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.
So, here's the thing. Even though there was plenty going on here, it wasn't all that exciting. And I think a lot of that had to do with how frustrated I was with so much of this. I get that Zorah has a very hard time thinking that anybody would actually care about her, but her absolute blindness to how Rans felt about her was annoying. Then there was this random chapter or two where Rans and Zorah go to some members only BDSM club. Which okay, I guess was part of her training. But I do not like it when the female is the dominate one. At all. So that little play of theirs only grated on me. And while we're on that subject. We got zero heat from them here. The last book I commented on how I really liked the sexy fun times between these two, but in this one, every time it was about to happen we get none of it. Instead it's a flash forward a few hours and we're told how great it was. Totally stingy.
For much of the beginning, not a whole lot happens. Rans and Zorah go check out the disaster that is her house a couple times to clean up a bit and see what can be salvaged. Rans is trying to get Zorah to learn how to only take a little of his energy at a time and to also be able to feed from others around her on purpose. They go to that club I mentioned as a way for her to practice taking energy from others while not taking it from Rans. But things go bad fast in a way nobody saw coming. Honestly though, what goes down there doesn't make a lot of logical sense when you think about. I mean, for one, how did all these bikers get into a members only club while all carrying guns? I just have a hard time accepting that.
It's after that attack that Rans accepts that Hell might actually be a safer place for Zorah, so it's not long until she's taken there. This was definitely the most boring part of the story, but we do learn that Hell is not what most people expect and the demons aren't like the Fae make them out to be. Zorah's dad is still broken with random moments of lucidity and she often finds herself squaring off against her succubus grandpa. It's a few weeks or so later that Zorah learns what the demons are up to and she needs to get back to Rans as soon as she can. Easier said than done in so many ways. But she manages to get to him and from there she finally learns her love wasn't one sided after all. Too bad that's not enough to combat what she learned and the betrayal that cuts Rans deep.
I received an Audible Code via Audiobook Boom for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation for this review.
This is the third book in an ongoing paranormal romance series about a young woman named Zora navigating her now crazy life. Everyone seems to be out to get her and she only wants one thing, the safety of her estranged father.
I have listened to the previous books and writing wise, I liked the first one but wasn't impressed with the second. This one, however, is more up to par with the first or slightly better. We get to see the way the demons live and get a larger idea of the world. Events of book one are referenced in a twist I should have seen coming, but didn't.
The narration is still good and I was pulled into the world. As I stated before, the story itself is better in this one than in the second. It doesn't feel like a long-winded wait fest and I was actually invested in Zora's journey again. I definitely want to know what happens in the future and cannot imagine how Zora and Rains are going to get out of the situation they are currently in.
Audiobook review: The Last Vampire: Book 3 is a slow paranormal romance served with a side of world drama and villains in sheep’s clothing. The story closes without conclusion to the conspiracy but on a very happy note 😉! The narrator did a good job, but read at a bit slower speed than I liked, a speed of 1.25-1.5 was perfect! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Having finished this 3rd book in the series (the last I have, since I was listening to the compilation of the 1st 3 books), I’m still pretty meh on the whole thing. Plus, I’m finding that I really resent that I’ve read 3 books (600+ pages, almost 21 hours of audio) and gotten no conclusions in any of the books. They each just randomly stop. Which, of course, means there won’t be any kind of satisfaction in book 4 or 5. So, I’d need to read or listen to a further 600 pages or another 20+ hours of audio to get a single conclusion. The simple fact is that I’m just not that invested. Hoopla has the audio of books 4-6, so they’re available to me (even if I didn’t want to buy them) but I don’t think I’ll bother. Which means I’ll never know how it ends and have just wasted 20+ hours of time listening to what is essentially half a story.
And let me tell you it is FULL of filler to stretch the story over 6 books; you especially feel that in this 3rd book. I was just bored with a lot of it, especially all the sex/succubus stuff. By which I don’t just mean the sex (there’s not actually that much of it, compared to what could have been), but all the testing this and trying that, the fetish club and play and requisite description of the outfits, her sexy shows, etc, etc. I was BORED. The whole thing drags like the middle of a book…like the middle it is.
I was also seriously tired of all of her “woe is me, no one could love me” doubt of Rans and the veracity of their relationship. It was tedious and silly. The man had already bound himself to her FOR LIFE. I think it was abundantly clear how he felt, so her continued doubt felt like the contrived plot device it was.
Again, the actual writing itself is fine and the audio versions seem pretty well done. It’s not an issue with quality I have, but with the style of breaking books into serials that have to be read as a whole. This is a personal preference kind of thing, but I’m pretty done with it.
Audiobook narrated by Gwendolyn Druyor, as the rest of the series, definitely liked the job she did a bit slow on times but like her voice changes. Edition was done well. As for the story, it's a paranormal romance, with lots of different characters and action that kept me hearing. There is a lot in the story so I am sure you will enjoy them all as I did, this time we get Zorah.
okay. kinda glad that I kept with this series. I bought the entire series for I think two dollars in total on kindle, and that contributed to my continuing reading of the series while being unimpressed by the first two books. But this book, while it wouldn't stand on its own due to the amount of prior knowledge it requires to enjoy reading it, was the best in the series thus far and kinda... by a lot. The writing still has its annoying tone of voice that it has in the first two books, but I find that it was a lot more tolerable in this book. Zorah is coming into her own in this book more than in the first two, and while she and the reader are still being thrust into frightening new things, it feels like she's becoming more able to do those type of things. It also feels like she became cleverer in this book, while still retaining her weird awkwardness. I still dislike her self-loathing but that's a part of her character I think I'm just going to have to ignore to continue liking her LOL. Sooo I don't know this has been super rambly but I love the change of scene in this book and also the development of a lot of the plotlines and relationships. It feels much more substantial than the first two books and I'm finding myself excited to continue this series, instead of treating is as something that I'm only continuing because it's easier to continue the status quo than to distrupt it. Anywaysssss ummm I'm actually super excited for the next book sorry that this review makes no sense i'm really tired. i cried a little during this book bc my own daddy issues were targeted i fear and also I'm started to actually like Zorah and Rans together :))
also i love myrial idc if she might be evil i love gender things i love succubi and incubi they are so cool i love things like this i
Fantastic Story & Audible Listen🎧 Fascinating & Addictive!
The Last Vampire: Book Three By: R.A. Steffan, Jaelynn Woolf Narrated by: Gwendolyn Druyor Series: The Last Vampire, Book 3
I love this great series! R.A Steffan & Jaelynn Woolf created an imaginative and fascinating world of where humans, demons, Fae and yes, the last vampire live. The world dynamics are amazing and we learn more about it as Zorah delves deeper in the supernatural world. In this book she goes to be with her Dad, who was brought to Hell after his release from the Fae realm. Nigellas convinced Zorah & Rans that Hell was a safe place for Zorah and he takes her there. Zorah not only spends time but she stumbles upon things that point to bad things happening. Betrayals and possibly threats to world peace amongst three realms. I highly recommend this exciting series, it has so much to offer including drama, action, twists, suspense and hot romance. I am looking forward to the 4th book and what happens next for the DemonKin & The Last Vampire AND their world! Thank you R.A Steffan & Jaelynn Woolf for another awesome story!
I listened to the Audible edition, narrated by the talented Gwendolyn Druyor. She is an awesome voice performer who puts a lot of heart and emotion in to her performance. She brings the characters to life, gives each their own unique voice and personality. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another amazing listen🎧
With each new installment of this paranormal tale, the plot thickens as layer upon layer of secrets are discovered, deceptions and betrayals are brought forth, and we connect more dots between the human, fae and demon worlds—slowly uncovering how Zorah and Rans fit in and the importance of it all. As Zorah continues to negotiate for the safety of her father, she unearths more than what she bargained for, becoming more entwined in an ancient feud, while bringing Rans and her friends in the crossfire. When the safest place is to go to Hell, she finds there is more there than what meets the eye, discovering the true nature of her grandfather as well as a deception so horrible that it could only mean destruction of the treaty and the reason why Rans is still the last vampire alive. Every twist and turn kept me on the edge of my seat, as characters cannot be trusted and each new discovery dives deeper into a world with its own rules, a possible war among paranormal realms, and what will become of Zorah and Rans as they navigate through it all.
Listened on audio: Gwendolyn Druyor continues a great performance on narration, keeping with the consistencies of the characters’ personalities and distinguished voices.
Zorah visits her dad in hell, he is still in a mostly non verbal until a demon walks in & he lunges at him! Myrial the incubus/succubus changes her/his appearance and it is Zorah's grandfather. He tries to get Darryl, Zorah's dad to agree to a soul binding, which would enable the demon to feed him health & heal him but Zorah forbids it.
While there, she befriends a girl so she can continue her sex charade so she can feed from the audience. She also finds out about the blood wine. She begins to piece the puzzle together & now she needs to get back to earth to tell Rans what she has discovered.I
She tried to withhold her feeling for him but he has a way of pushing her buttons & in an fit of anger professes her love to him. After telling Rans her discovery, they have to come up with a plan to make sure another war doesn't break out.
This book you discovered the realm of hell & about the demons & people that lived there. How Zorah & Rans withheld there true feeling from each other. Now, the people that Rans thought were friends are betraying him.
I am an avid listener of Steffan, Woolf, and Druyor. For this series, we have the Last Vampire of the title Rans, but the real main character is Zorah. In the first book, she is weak in mind and body, but she grows as a character so much. In this story, Zorah visits hell quite literally, and it's a big contrast to the land of fairy that she visited in book 2. She comes into her power in a very self-possessed way. Watching the character growth has been fantastic, and there is still more to come to find out what's happening with them.
Druyor as narrator is typically excellent. She performs and gets out of the way of the story. That's how a good performance should be.
This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I don't recommend it. Readers who like vampires, a hero's journey, and two characters with undeniable chemistry should pick this up. You'll enjoy it!
This third installment of the series advances the story a lot. We get an even larger glimpse into how the fae, human, and demon worlds are connected and the importance of the last vampire, Rans. These writers are extremely talented and I have enjoyed this series immensely. A series full of originality! Love Zorah and Rans as characters, they're well written and have many great qualities. There is some surprising betrayal and the plot thickens in this book. There is a lot of excitement and intense moments as we follow Zorah into Hell and back.
Love the narration throughout the series and this book is just as amazing. The narrator is staying consistent from book to book and has given fabulous performances. She fits the story and characters well and had been a pleasure to listen to for each book!
Rans saves the day again and Zorah is now safe from the Fae but she still needs answers. So when Zorah's father is sent to Hell by the Fae as a titheling to the demons, she leaves Rans behind and heads to Hell. But will Zorah be able to get the answers she seeks now that her father's mind has been broken by the Fae? While Zorah is in Hell, she learns something so disturbing that she's shaken to the core. Someone Zorah has put her trust in can't be trusted. Which means that Rans may be in danger too. Will Zorah be able to find Rans and warn him?
The Last Vampire is a funny, suspenseful and steamy story that you won't be able to put down. I can't wait to read Book 4 of The Last Vampire series.
Entertaining story with interesting paranormal aspects; I really liked how this one ended too, I like where the story seems to be going. I’m still not a fan of the whole succubus scenario; my least favorite paranormals to read about. The beginning of this story did focus too much on Zorah needing to deal with her succubus powers and her having to feed on sexual energy; definitely not into the sex club scenario. The beginning is a bit too slow because of the succubus stuff, but the story does pick up in the 2nd of the story. Plus, I do like the chemistry and banter between Rans and Zorah; some really sweet moments between these two. I love how supportive they are of each other. Overall, I’m really enjoying this series; Zorah is growing on me! Looking forward to the next book!
Time to go to hell. Yep, Zorah need to go to hell to see her father. And what an education that turns out to be. The cost is high to get into hell, she must leave Ran, but he is a 700 year old undead. He had been teaching her to survive without him. He must want to be rid of her and her neediness. He taught her some self defense. How to use some weapons. How to drain her sexual need from others to feed herself. Yep, girl cut your ties and go to hell. Maybe you can figure out how to come back someday.
This book is slowly getting better. So after the last book we now know that Zorah and Ransley's lives are bound together with a blood bound, which means if one dies they both die. It was Suggested that Zorah would be safer if she were to go to hell and help take care of her father (who was sent there by the Fae. After what happened at a club to Zorah and against Ransley's better judgement he agrees and off to hell she goes. While there Zorah discovers the hidden truth of what the Demons are really up to and it involves Ransley and why he is The Last Vampire.
I was holding my breath all the time the Zorah was in bell and apart from Ransley. Finally they came clean about their feelings and OMG. I was crying and at edge of my couch. I love this series so much the I gonna feel a eternity waiting for The last vampire book 4. I really enjoy reading book. I'm I obsessed with Rans and Zorah and ttheir future together against the world.
This series just gets better and better. Well developed characters and world building, humour, sass and a touch of hot romance (succubus here guys hmm). After being saved from the fae by our sexy vampire hero Zorah heads to hell to try and help her father to recover from his treatment by the fae and there she finds some truths that turn her world upside down. Trust is hard won but easily lost and Zorah finds her trust has been misplaced. Loving this series and can't wait for book 4.
Ugh! I cannot stand wishy washy characters- especially when we see this behavior from the MC’s. I am past the point of just being irritated by Zorah and am already on the path of irritation. What does Rands have to do before she can stop with her insecurities? I have passed finding her actions, thoughts and actions as annoying and now it just feels like non stop whining. Ugh.
Surviving the Fae was a shock. Sending her Dad to hell isn’t what she expected but at least he isn’t in Dinah anymore. This book continues the why is he helping me, does he Like me, no he doesn’t. Not sure why lately so many books have the self doubt bouts that just drag on and on. Glad when it finally ended. Book ends on a cliffhanger but I’m happy to see some changes and answers finally revealed
Really like these books and so glad that Zorah and Ran have finally started to communicate. These books are on the edge of kinky without being gratuitous; not a huge surprise when your main character is an incubus. As usual Zorah is clueless and playing catch up about the demon world whilst trying not to get killed.
As were the first two books, this one was a really great read. The story just keeps getting better and better. June is way too far away to wait for it but I will force myself and wait with baited breath for its release. When you start reading this series, be prepared to not want to put it down!
The plot thickens. I really liked the political maneuverings in this book. The only thing that I didn’t like is the sex scenes, but I understand that the main character needs it to survive because she’s a succubus. I still think the scenes are over the top. I’m falling more and more in love with Rans though.
As much as I enjoyed this book, I’m still irritated that Z is throwing everything at saving her father when he’s been a closed off dick for 20 years. Buuuut it had a point and Z and Rans’ relationship is fiiiinally making progress. Right before more shit hits the fan of course.
This series has me hooked. I've already pre-ordered book four and I am desperately waiting for it to drop in June. Lord help me this series gets better and better with each book.
This series gets better and better. I am totally hooked and can't wait for book four. This is a new and interesting take on a vampire/fae story. The book has tons of action and drama with a wonderful mystery.
As usual with a middle book, this one seemed a bit drawn out. There was minimal action and less explanation of what was going on. It's clear that this is the set up to the next stage of the plot, but it comes across as a bit tedious.
I really enjoy the relationship between Fans and the other characters in the book. Although the female is the main character ,the plots revolve around Rams and the others..
And the journey continues....Fae are tricky and self-important, demons are deceitful and treacherous, humans are self-absorbed and fearful. And the last Vampire on earth is trying to prevent another war.
As I go through the story book after book, I suppose I get used to the woman's voice who is one of the narrators in the audiobook. Of course she doesn't sound so stupid as in the first one. The story is steadily progressing. Though there are some scenes which could be shorter.
