“Go on a date,” she said. “You’ll love it,” she said. She was wrong! It had been one year, two months and seventeen days since my last date. So my best friend Abby decided to sign me up for a dating app. She guaranteed that she could get me the best date of my life within one week. I didn’t really want to do it, but I figured what did I have to lose? Turns out that I 1. $500 2. My dignity 3. My patience and 4. My innocence to lose OK, so I didn’t really have my innocence to lose, but believe you me, Jack Morrison was my worst date ever. And I’ve been on a lot of bad dates. Trust me when I say that that was the longest ten hours and 33 minutes of my life. I never wanted to see or speak to him again. But it turns out you don’t always get what you want in life, because Jack showed up the very next day at a family gathering I was attending as a fake plus one. As you can imagine that was a real pickle, Jack wanted to know why I went on a date with him when I’m dating someone else. But he can’t know the whole complicated truth of the matter. I’m in a fake relationship and now I’m being blackmailed by the worst date ever. That’s not even the worst part. I decided to log onto this new app called “confession board” to seek some advice, but it turns out Jack Morrison is absolutely everywhere and he’s not going to leave me alone until I submit to his demands.
Was this a debut novel? Because that writing was a dumpster fire.
It starts out rough, Isabella is abrasive and tightly wound. She goes on a date her friend set up with Jack. They're both nightmares to the point that I had to go back and reread part because I couldn't figure out how they got from her being offended he touched her shoulder, and saying "what makes you say that" after EVERY comment. And him calling her a gold digger REPEATEDLY. To them having sex. And then BOTH feeling rejected and butthurt afterward
Dumpster fire.
Then we hit the actual plot where Isabella pretends to be Lucas's girlfriend and realizes Jack is his cousin.
Not gonna lie it's so redundant that I genuinely wondered if Isabella had a traumatic brain injury that damaged her short term memory. She repeatedly says or learns something and then on the next page she says/discovers it all over again.
I was ready for an offhand mention to some sort of accident as an explanation.
Like oh hey Isabella we painted the kitchen blue, here's a picture. She'd be all, oh that's nice. Walks into the kitchen. OH MY GOD GUYS LOOK THE KITCHEN IS BLUE DID YOU KNOW THE KITCHEN IS BLUE I CANT BELIEVE IT HOW IS THE KITCHEN BLUE
Not a real example, but stupid shit on the level happened
The hot and cold between Jack and Isabella was more confusing than anything. Like if they don't know which they're doing right now, it makes it hard to be the person reading it. None of it was good.
Dumpster. Fire.
And then we get to the endish. The shift to I KNEW I LOVED YOU FROM THE SECOND I SAW YOU, WE'RE GONNA GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES was abrupt and weird. (And complete bullshit)
Weird, but also somehow redundant. Jack seems to have caught her brain injury and apparently forgets he's announced that she's the love of his life a couple times. (Too soon man. Too soon.)
Meanwhile the Grandma is like I KNEW YOU LOVED EACH OTHER I COULD TELL RIGHT FROM THE SECOND I SAW YOU TOGETHER... but they were still in full on dumpster fire hate mode at that point????
If the grandma thinks that's love, holy fuck is there a marriage counselor nearby?
I read it, but I feel like there must have been super secret pages in between because I have no idea how it got anywhere.
If this isn't a debut novel, it's existence baffles me.
Dumpster fire. Dumpster fire. Dumpster fire.
It's so bad, I want to read the next one because it seems like there's no way it could be this bad too.
I remember when I first picked up one of J. S. Cooper’s books, I instantly fell in love with her writing, it was clear that she could piece a story together. As the years have progressed with her writing, the books that I’ve read has changed in a variety of ways, but considering I’ve not been able to keep up every book she’s released it’s hard to see where she’s grown as an author. I don’t even know how many stars I’ve give this book because adding everything up and what I thought about the story, it’s one of those books that just makes it a hard decision. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea that this story has to offer, but from what I was picturing is completely different to what actually happened. Normally I love that type of idea, but when it’s not exactly been thought out all that well and you can see inconsistencies throughout the story. I understand the hard work that goes into creating these stories, plus I know that it can be a kick to an author when they see that not everyone was in love with the book that they have put out there. However, no matter what happens in life you won’t be able to win everyone over, but it’s just how you handle it is how it will determine what type of person you are. I know for a fact that there’s a huge portion already that think this book was incredibly amazing, but to me I’m not sure what it is that I’m missing. As I already stated, I loved the idea of the story, but there was just so much that just didn’t feel right or even work… but again, that’s just my opinion. I actually found myself not liking Isabella, there was just something about her that just didn’t seem real about her. For example, I get that she would do anything for her best friend, but for someone who wasn’t interested in someone’s family money or even wealth for all that matter if they hadn’t earned it themselves, it sure showed a shallow side of her for going ahead and wanting to try and con her best friend’s family into giving him money so that he can open up his café. Surely if you’re not the type of person who thinks money isn’t important but who you are on the inside is, then I don’t think she should have gone along with the scheme that was taking place. To me it just gave us females a bad reputation, and I hate that now a days we’re most likely referenced to being similar like Golddiggers as the minute we know someone is from money we do anything we can to try and get a bit of it… And in all honesty, I hate that’s how we’re subjected too at times. Hell, if I was Isabella, the minute my best friend even suggested the idea to me, I’d be like as much as I respect you, that’s just something I can’t do… even if it’s for both of our futures I just can’t because I’d much rather find a way to work for what I need. At times I thought Jack was okay, but not fully the best, I get he has issues from the past, but still 10 years is a good while to actually mull over them considering he’s meant to be an adult and be in charge of a company… but I hate how one minute he’s so flirty (well as much as he tries without putting his foot in it) but then in an instant he’s a right jerk, he’s all up in Isabella’s face constantly and it just seems like he doesn’t respect women. I get he’s this big shot guy and could have anything and everything he wanted in the palms of his hands, but still, there’s a way to go about things. I would honestly go into more but I feel like it would spoil the book for you and that’s the last thing I want to happen, plus I don’t want this to turn into one big essay even though I can kind of see that it has a little and that truly wasn’t my intention however I have to be honest and sometimes we have to make choices that we don’t exactly like or want to do… If anything, I’d much rather you experience it for yourself and see what you make of it. It’s okay us leaving reviews, but it’s not our reviews that will make up your mind, it may sway you slightly, but it’s still not your own opinion… that you need to form for yourself. After reading so far, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to read to the end, as this story has the ideas, it’s just not been executed all that well. It seems like the story was rushed and I hate it when that happens as I love getting to know the ins and outs of them all, the gritty little details, but still there was just so much that didn’t work in my opinion. Even the whole Worst Date got brushed over, okay they would go back to it every now and then, but in terms of Isabella wanting to have it out with Abby, that didn’t really happen… Abby didn’t exactly feel guilty for how things played out between Isabella and Jack. If I’d done that to my friend, I’d be feeling so bad and guilty considering all I’d want is for them to be happy, to experience a fun time especially when it comes to them trying to find their forever person. I’d be going up to my friend and doing my best to actually apologise for how things turned out, but that never happened in this book. To sum up this book and what I thought of it, it’s been such a hard process and I know for a fact it’s going to either upset people or possibly have so many that don’t agree with what I’ve thought and said, but at the end of the day, reviews are our own thoughts, what we think. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for how this has turned out, but we can’t love every book that is ever published. But even still, don’t just take my word for this, go and explore for yourself as you’ll most likely think something else to me.
Isabella and her friends haven’t been on dates in a while, they always end up picking the worst guys possible. So, when Abby (one of Isabella’s best friends/ flatmates) suggests of setting each of them all up for online dating, the only catch is that the persons who profile it is wouldn’t get to have access to it, everyone but Isabella can’t help but jump at it. After Abby manages to find her the perfect date, Isabella knows instantly that she should just turn around and not walk into the restaurant, but still Isabella can’t help but want to please people… so she does the only thing that her feet allow her too, walks into the restaurant and ends up having the worst date ever. Something is off about the entire date, even after making the stupid mistake of going back to his and sleeping with him, he just instantly switches and starts making demands of her. Doing the only logical thing, Isabella walks out, hoping to never see the jerk again… But clearly luck isn’t on her side as when she goes off to help her best friend, the last person she was expecting to see was her date (Jack) from the night before…. Realising that he is related to her best friend, she could literally cry… Will Jack give up and out her or does he have something to score with her???
Unlikeable, combative, presumptuous FMC who whined pessimistically throughout . Also, good third of her dialogue so far consists of her saying, "what's that supposed to mean?".
It's not all on her though, the MMC is quite a smarmy, cheesy ass.
Was it the worst date ever? Not even close, but maybe it wouldn't have turned out that way if the FMC had checked her attitude at the door.
Isabella is tired of trying to find someone to connect with. Her last boyfriend left a bad scar in her brain. She is tired of the bar scene and dating aps that don't seem to work. One night, she and her three best friends came up with an idea. They would write each other's profiles on dating site. They would try to find the best person for each other. What can go wrong with this plan?
Jack is use to people knowing who he is. He is wary of women who just want him for his money. Setting up a dating profile sounded like a good idea. When Isabella's friend set up a date, it doesn't go as planned. He admits, to himself, that he was a jerk on it. Talking about stuff that Isabella doesn't know about because it was her friend talking, posing as Isabella. What a mess the first and probably last date this turns out to be.
J.S. Cooper's story is funny and charming. There are great moments of laughter and also sweetness. The friendship aspect of the story is amazing. How they look out for each other and support their decision. This a fun book for those days or nights you need something light hearted to read. I am excited to see what happens in the next book in this series.
After being betrayed by her ex, Isabella is content without a man in her life but her best friends don’t agree. Not only have they created an online profile for her but they have arranged a date for her as well the only problem is that blind dates seldom turn out as planned.
From the moment she meets Jack the sparks of antagonism fly and the sarcastic banter begins. She knows that they don’t have a future together, but one steamy night would be okay and then they can go their separate ways. She is about to find out that fate has other plans as a favor for a friend brings Jake back into her life and that is when the fun really begins!
Although Isabella and Jack got off to a rough start there was no denying the chemistry and connection between them. Misunderstandings, humorous interactions and intriguing characters leave us wanting her friend’s stories as well.
This was a very disappointing read. There was redundancy and contradictions throughout. Isabella did come across as a bitch when she first met Jack and he ran hot and cold. After having the worst first date ever, Isabella goes on a weekend trip with her gay best friend Lucas. For them being best friends since college and then him supposedly giving her information about his family before their trip, Isabella sure didn't know anything about his family. She runs into Jack during the trip and is bothered with the attraction she feels towards him. I wish the book would have had his pov to know what he thought. The ending was ok and I was glad when the book finally ended. I have read other books by this author that I really liked. That's why I was so disappointed in this one.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. This is the first book in this series and what an amazing story. Isabella lets one of her roommates set her up on a dating app. When she meets Jack, their date doesn't go like she thought. He is very hot and extremely handsome but very arrogant. She agrees to act as her gay best friends girlfriend at a weekend trip to his grandparents. Once they arrive she sees Jack who is Lucas's cousin and the head of the family company. Their attraction is still off the charts. Lucas finally comes clean to his family and Isabella and Jack finally get their happily ever after.
Train wreck. Or a plane crash? Which is worse? Because this one... oh my god ... Oh. My. God. The heroine drove me up the wall. The hero made me want to bang my head against hard surfaces. The hero and the heroine together... made me want to throw my kindle out the window. Their dialogue was stilted and awfully painful to read. I quite literally read the second half of the ... story diagonally and liberally skipping some paragraphs. I forced myself through this one simply because I chose this book as my book club read for October, 2023.
This book has so much potential but also so disappointing . Are there no beta readers?? So many mistakes!!! Locas instead of jack, jack instead of john. At 87% i just quite This book need professional editing, it would be amazing it will!!
The writing was immature. The characters hated each other and then would have sex. The male lead would say horrible things to the female lead and she would forgive him and miss him "passionately." I can't believe I read the entire thing. There is no way I will read the next book in the series.
Los diálogos son basura; todo el rato están "I mean...", "... you know" y preguntando "what dou you mean?". La relación de los dos pasa de odiarse, o al menos no soportarse ya que él piensa que ella es una cazafortunas y ella cree que él es un capullo, a decir que son el amor de su vida y almas gemelas...
It was such a mess that I stopped reading mid-word. I just couldn't go on any longer. Aside from grammatical errors, reading the dialog was like watching something move fast in a circle. The behavior on their first date was a constant repeat of insulting one another, stereotyping, misunderstanding the other person and asking "What? What do you mean by...?", shallow compliments and overall acting rude on both sides. I didn't feel a thing, the words I read... it was as if I was forced to read them that they had no emotions, no nothing, just "read and get it over with". Overall, it was so unenjoyable, I permanently deleted it from Kindle, despite luckily getting it for free from Amazon Kindle.
Too many comments with ”girl, blah blah” and ”you know”. All the girl phrases with Abby were distracting. There were some editing issues separating who was speaking. The characters were cute but there was something missing from there development. I would have liked some moments when they got along or saw something special in the other. It seemed like it went from "you're hot but annoying, let's have sex" in first 3rd of the book to ”wow I care” to "let's get married”.. my perception.
Not what I was expecting. A decent story, but not what I was expecting based on the story synopsis. I read the whole book and no where in the story does Jack blackmail Isabella, and she doesn’t go onto an app for confessions where she looks for advice. Based on two key factors I was expecting to happen missing from the book, I was a bit disappointed in the overall storyline. I was also expecting two narrators, but the entire book is narrated by the female narrator and only the bonus epilogue is done by the male narrator. Disappointing.
I got 20% in and I couldn’t take it any longer. The writing is abysmal. Reads like a high school junior’s essay about their weekend. The dialogue? Cringe-worthy. Made no sense. There was no flow. It was painful, to be honest. Isabella is needlessly abrasive, and, frankly, came off ridiculously dumb. She had zero social skills and was just argumentative from the get-go.
Personally I didn’t enjoy this book. I felt it had some funny one liners but that was about it.
I felt it was immature and I don’t know if it was poorly written or poorly edited but there were typos and characters were getting mixed up in scenes. It just didn’t flow well for me.
I always know I’m going to smile and laugh when I read a book by JS Cooper and this book was no exception. Isabella and Jack just can’t seem to get it right and Isabella just can’t get away from him when he’s literally everywhere. The back and forth banter between these two was priceless!!
I usually like books by Cooper but this book was just not great. Both main characters sucked. She was an idiot and he was kinda an a-hole at first but she kept being just a bitchy idiot. Then the end was rushed into a HEA.
The main H was an absolute ass to the heroine and she still gave it up every time. EVERY TIME. I finished the book but I hated how badly she let him treat her like trash. Turned me off from reading the rest of the series.
The addition starts with the book cover….yeah…yeah…yeah don’t judge a book by its cover they say ….well we all do it and this one here it is the scratch to your itch! Within the first chapters you get the panoramic view of whom you’re dealing with! What are best friends for then to make things better even if you have to go through some mess to get there. Isabella an art teacher, isn’t rich in fact doesn’t have much money, and hasn’t had a date in over a year. So, her roommates agree to use a dating app to create a profile for another one of the roommates and if the match results in marriage the bride will pay the roommate who set her up with her other half one thousand dollars. Her roommate texted with Jack to get a feel of him and after she setup a date for Isabella and Isabella met him for dinner. Jack sexy as all get out older guy, grumpy (just a little), rude, and his rudeness made for some hilarious back and forth between them. Isabella caught an attitude and he liked to egg her on. The chemistry was insanely intense, and the magnetic pull couldn’t be ignored so despite their differences they ended up back at his penthouse for a one-night stand but again his insults made her leave with her stating this the worst date ever! In supporting her best friend who is gay to his grandparent’s house as his girlfriend because he wanted to get money to start a business. Afraid that if he revealed his sexual preference to grandparents, they would one hate him and two not give him the startup monies. However, fate have other plans because when they get there, she meets her friend’s cousin John, CEO of the family business. Yep, you guessed John CEO of family business is Jack (worst date ever She explains to Jack about the dating app. agreement with her roommate and apologize for lying to his grandparents, but she is doing it for her best friend (his cousin). Again, John/Jack shows he is jerk however, the chemistry is just as intense even if neither one wants to admit to it. Will his grandparents disown him, will they be upset finding he is gay, will she get to see another side to John/Jack, can there be more and can they find happiness?
Spice Level: 🌶🌶.5 3 scenes over 6 chapters that begin with a one-night stand. Hit up chapters 19-20 for what I think are the spiciest.
This was a fun and different plot!
Isabella is broke and over men. Her bestie decides that they should give online dating another try and set up profiles for each other, act as them, and pick their next date. Which is how Isabella ends up on a date with Jack. She has no clue who Jack is, and it’s very obvious her bestie did her dirty by saying all this stuff about her that is categorically not true. These two have the most awful date ever. He even lets her pay for the like $500+ meal that she can 0% afford, and well, he can, haha. They end up going home together because they know there isn’t going to be a second date, but both are interested in getting laid. So they do just that, and she bounces. Now it’s the next morning, and she is going to go pretend to be her other bestie's girlfriend so he can get his inheritance and open his coffee shop. His super-rich grandparents are super conservative, and well, he’s gay, so she acts as his beard. What she doesn’t know is that said bestie is Jack’s cousin. So, now she has to see Jack again, and yup, it goes about as well as you’d think it would.
They still have that chemistry from the night before, but they are just so annoyed with each other and clearly not a good match, or are they? They can’t seem to stay away from each other, though, and end up getting it on behind the scenes while pretending to hate each other. Nothing like a good hate f*ck haha!

I have to cringe as I remember how I had a bad feeling reading the prologue of the story, and how it was an absolutely perfect set-up for how the date from hell would pan out. Isabella hasn't been on a date in 427 days and one of her roommates, Abby, has come up with a plan for all four of the roomies to find a date. Choose each other's' names and pretend to be that person when filling out the information on the dating app. Great idea, except that Isabella won't have any idea what "she" had filled out on her interest sheet and her date would already know what she said. Jack Morrison (you mean like Jim?) meets her at the bar and immediately things become a little awkward. She's ticked because he had the audacity to be late and he says that he expected a blonde, someone like Pamela Anderson. Oops! Ms. Cooper does a really good job of writing uncomfortable and silly dialogue that seemed to go on and on, making both Jack and Abby reach for words and thoughts to stay on track. It's really a cute story and the only thing it needs to be excellent is a tighter, crisper dialogue and less repetition. It's a great start to a new series!
Jack and Isabella have the worst first date ever. But was it really? There was so much tension and argumentative banter that they even tried to start the date over after only 10 minutes, who does that? Maybe it didn’t end so bad, but then again maybe it did. They never expected to see each other again and Isabella really thought that was for the best. Then Jack turns up at the worst time and place, when she’s trying to be the best friend in the world, and it just confirms his worst assumptions about her. Secrets, family politics and business and confusing sexual chemistry are rife and it takes these two some time and courage to see their way through to the HEA they equally deserve.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The girls all have a apartment together in New York City. They all went to college together and became great friends. None of them were married or had boyfriends. Abbey decided to try and fix Isabella up with somebody on a dating app. As it was in this story Isabella meets Jack and they have a date that turns to hell, but the sexual relationship really hit home. The end up hating each other and part ways. Now Lucas is Isabella gay friend, she agrees to go meet his family, he wants Isabelle to pretend she is his girlfriend, he wants money to start his own business. Anyway I don't want to spoiler the story for all of you out there getting ready to read this story. This story was a delicious funny story. Enjoyed the banter of the people in this story, very good story. Enjoy it ! The author has done it again, with awesome story.😊
Not a fan. The characters felt super immature. Every single one of them. And some were very cliche. I read through to completion but was tempted to DNF early in the book.
There are a lot of typos and misspellings. There is dialogue that I think comes from separate characters but runs together.
There are decent bones for a book here but it needs work. There was so much extra trivial things added for no real reason. It didn’t add to the plot it was literally like a side quest.
I also don’t understand the first few chapters gave us the bank account, days since last date, and her weight? And then all of a sudden that was gone. The timeline is confusing and there were moments when they are speaking about their date and acting like it was weeks before. I literally said aloud “it was two days ago.”
