The small town of Beaumont is idyllic and the perfect holiday destination. However, the town hides a dark secret. In a span of a few decades, a series of murders happened. Not only has it terrified the residents who were proud residents of the town, but it has affected the number of tourists that want to visit the town.
Girls, with their ages ranging from 13 to 16 have been disappearing and showing up dead. Unfortunately, the police and the residents are unable to find who has been killing their girls. They have all but given up.
Until Evelynn Prescott is called in. Evelynn is a private investigator who is called in to solve the case as part of a grieving grandmother’s dying wish. Her granddaughter was the most recent case.
Now she must race against time to complete this case before her client dies and before the killer strikes again.
Author Clara Lewis has always been an avid fan of mysteries. As a child, she devoured the “Nancy Drew” and “Hardy Boys” series’s, which inspired her desire to write her own mystery thrillers. Though Clara’s journey took her in several different directions, she eventually published her debut series early in 2021.
Besides spending her time creating vast worlds and convoluted mysteries for her readers to divulge in, Lewis spends her time at her home in Portland, Oregon. As a mother and wife, she wears many hats, and can often be found baking and crocheting.
Lewis always had a passion for creating, and she wants nothing more than to provide the same thrills she loves to her readers. She loves to read (and smell) books just as much as she loves to write them! She has several projects in the works, and can’t wait to share them with her audience.
The author has absolutely NO idea about a Police procedural or even detective fiction. But her portrayal of a complex character was good, although extremely formulaic and derivative. Never again.
A murder/kidnapping mystery by an author I've never read before. It is a quick one-hour read. Interesting in its own simple way, as one doesn't expect to find much depth to any of the characters in such a short writing of 52 pages.
The Plot: PI Evelynn is called on in the middle of the night to take on a cold case across the country of a missing girl. It seems there have been other cases with similarities years prior. She accepts, unrealistically without knowing much about the case or discussing money. It all seems a little far fetched as many of the details seemed to me. The predictable ending didn't surprise either.
This is a short novella, but it packs a punch. Girls aged 13-16 are going missing and showing up dead years later. Evelynn is a PI who is called in to find the killer. This story grabbed me from the first page and kept me turning the pages. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. I would highly recommend this book. I received this book for free and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
This is the first book in Detective Lagarde and it was good. It was a short read just enough to get you interested in Detective Angelina Largarde, both her past and her present. She moved to Detroit to continue her career as a detective. She had some bad memories of Detroit since she had lived there early in her life and lost all her family members in a fire. While she started her job Detective Rodges doesn’t seem to want to do anything but close cases and that’s what he wanted to do with the fire. Detective Largarde isn’t like that, she doesn’t just take a look and think the case is a dead end and close the case. Angelina wasn’t convinced the fire was just an electrical surge so goes on her own to solve the case even when she gets told to stop by her superior. I’m looking forward to more in the series and Detective Largarde
I received this book for an honest review. It is a short book of 39 pages. You could read it quickly.
Beaumont is a small town which has a dark secret to it. Murders occurred in the town. It scared people that live there and it also affected tourists from coming to visit. Teenagers from the ages 13-16 have been disappearing and have been found dead. The police haven’t found the killer yet.
A private investigator named Evelyn Prescott is called in to solve the case because the Police gave up. Her granddaughter was also amongst the ones that were killed. Will she catch the killer before he strikes again? This was a very interesting book and I couldn’t put it down.
This one was put aside to read later as I had quite a stack in the to be read stack. As usual Clara does a great job and I had no clue till the end about the bad guy, I should have! Thanks for the good read. I must say it’s disturbing. Such a comment on mental illness in patellar how a loss of a child could cause such trauma. But even more the failure of the notice of the mother’s illness. I am sure this can and does happen in today’s climate of so many women going missing in some areas and not enough time or resources to follow through. Hope fully most families notice and get help.
This is the first book that I have read by Clara Lewis and it won't be my last. I loved it. The action started from the beginning and the suspense of whether Evelyn would survive or be rescued kept me reading. I highly recommend this book about a serial killer who kidnaps the Evelyn, the private investigator who was hired to find who killed young girls in the area. The whole town was shocked to find out who the killer was and it had a HEA ending. I received a free copy for signing up to get this author's newsletters, and this is my voluntary and honest review.
In my opinion, because this author excels at shorter novels, she wastes no time in setting the stage and defining the complexity of the characters. She presents an interactive novel: leaving the reader to deduce by thoughtful consideration, a mind picture that could win an academy award for best picture. What a difference from being fed all the details! It makes for a fast read and a pleasant change.
Her career as a PI investigator has been helping others. a night call has her jumping in to help without knowing the details or if money will be paid. A town that has been targeted taking girls 13-16. Fast paced as you follow Evelynn as she investigates. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
If I hadn't previously read about Evelyn as Dr. Evelyn, I probably would have found this more suspenseful; however, Dr. Evelyn would never check out a suspect without backup. She did accurately identify her, and did manage to escape alive, so it had its strong parts. I think if you haven't read books with Dr. Evelyn, you would find this a suspenseful read. Jean, ARC Team
Just think if Evelyn's phone wasn't notice by Alex. More death! This novels grabbed me at the start! The story got right to the point. I would never have thought Jennifer was such a misguided person, til the end!!!
Girls 13 to 16 are being murdered in the town of Beaumont. Evelynn Prescott a private investigator struggles to solve what’s happening before it’s to late. A gripping and heartbreaking story as you follow her through her investigation. A must read for everyone. Highly recommended.
Private investigator is hired to uncover the truth behind a number of teenage girl disappearances. She then gets kidnapped and has to stay alive long enough for the cops to find her. (not a spoiler - chapter 1)
I’m becoming a Clara Lewis fan. Cry for Help was a fast paced mystery/thriller, and it was nice to be wrapped up entirely in so few pages. I wish we would see more of Evelyn, and even Alec, but I don’t know if that is going to happen. But for a short story/novella this was one enjoyable read.
