Ehhhh, this was just okay. Similarly to Morrison, I think Jodo has a lot of great ideas but sometimes the execution isn’t the best.

The outstanding aspect of this text is Boucq's art. Beautiful! Jodorowsky's story is compelling, although wild and meandering, at times. But this is to be expected of Jodorowsky. It's if he's coming up with the ideas on the fly, going from one story event to another, sometimes in ways that are not as clearly connected and that seem ridiculous (e.g., Moon Face and his friends being carried to the desert on a bed of flying seagulls). But its Boucq's work that makes this story so engaging. He was able to take Jodorowsky's disparate ideas and represent them in a more cohesive visual narrative.

Another Jodorowsky showing of extreme vulgarity, religiosity, and mysticism. Here we have an island nation under the sway of an egg-based dictatorship, battered by unnaturally large waves, anarchists living in the train tunnels, cavedwelling fishermen offering the hearts of whales to a sleeping virgin, and the mysterious mute "moon face", bringing miracles and disruption to the dysfunctional island. The art has a beautiful style, somewhere between cartoon and watercolour, but the characters are some of the ugliest sons of bitches you'll find outside the pages of American indie zines. The environments are beautiful, from the eggy city to the fields and mountains of the island, to the exquisitely rendered living cathedral. Jodorowsky doesn't pull any punches, as usual. There's castration, a mother with a full beard and chest hair, a hideously obese prostitute who thinks her hunchback son is the messiah, and lots of other grotesqueries. The many miracles on display are nearly as beautiful as the island's people are disgusting, including a flying carpet of seagulls, ants carving stones from a mountainside, shrapnel transfigured into stained glass. Overall, a great read.

Trippy, messed up, all over the place but overall enjoying.

The ending felt sort of rushed and there's no true meaning to the whole thing. It felt incomplete by the end but I understand that sometimes that's how art is.

This is typical Jodorowsky taken to extremes: some of it is funny but also vulgar. Boucq's art is beautiful. The story meanders all over the place and even though it reaches a conclusion, it wasn't as satisfying as, say, The Incal or The Metabarons. Recommended for Jodo fans.

Wonderfully unique. The art is amazing. Story meanders a bit. Feels, in some instances, that the narrative is first pass that is in need of some revising.

Moonface himself is an endearing character; some really beautiful frames, but at some points the usual Jodorowsky rolling chaos gets a bit linear or even hollow. This isn’t his best writing. Moonface is still worth a read if you’re into Jodorowsky generally, or for Boucq’s superb art.

For me the highlights are the artwork, and the smiling Moonface’s ‘flow state’ philosophy, he’s the silent hero here.

The Humanoids 2019 print edition I found was also one of the best quality books I’ve had from the imprint, very well made.

Although Jodo is once again using same themes as in other his works, and fact that this dates to the same period as Metabarons and Technopriests, this time I accepted his 'game' and quite enjoyed it. Yes once again we have crazy church cults, rotten leaders, fanatics and same mysterious savior, but it all ties together well. There are some funny ideas (like fisherman beating half dead whales and crippling themselves), some social critique and it all ties together well, creating quite enjoyable book. I even didn't mind strange (or classic Jodo) ending...

The initial premise was so promising, especially with François Boucq’s beautiful immersive illustration, transmitted from Jodorowsky’s brain. However the pace felt rushed towards the end. Very phallic and all the usual Jodorowsky’s madness.

Jodorowsky pieces together an epic screaming quest with unforgettable characters who each okay their role in helping Moon Face to rebuild the old cathedral. I can't recommend this graphic novel highly enough.
