It was 1968 and Margaret Rose McCutcheon had recently farewelled her husband of fifty years, Albert. While she was grieving, she was also being hassled by a member of Albert’s law firm about what she was going to do with her shares in the business. Whilst going through the desk in Albert’s office, she found something she had been unaware of, and in trying to discover what it was all about, she came in touch with retired investigator Tom Bateman. When Margaret told Tom about the siblings she had lost touch with over fifty years ago, between the two of them they began their search for the long lost relatives.
Back in Coal Creek, West Virginia in 1901, Eliza Hobbs was giving birth to her sixth child. Martin, Eliza’s husband, was not by her side; he rarely was. He would occasionally come to see her from Charleston and give her a small amount of money for the children, demand his rights as her husband and leave again. The farm Eliza and the children lived on had belonged to her parents and they were happy there. But it was small and run down and with little money, it continued to deteriorate. But the crunch came when Eliza informed Martin she was pregnant again with their eighth child, and he demanded she get rid of it. Eliza loved each and every one of her children and there was no way she would do that.
What would happen to Eliza and the children? And would Margaret, sixty years later, find her siblings, the ones who were still alive?
When I Last Saw You is the latest offering by bestselling author Bette Lee Crosby and I loved it. Ms Crosby never takes a wrong step in her novels and this one is no exception. Based on fact, the characters are so real, have so much depth, it’s easy to know and feel for them. Eliza was a strong, determined woman and only wanted the best for her children. Margaret was lonely through having no children of her own, and family was what she’d always wanted. When I Last Saw You is a poignant, heartfelt and memorable book which I have no hesitation in recommending.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Margaret lost her husband and needed to find at least one of her many siblings to be added as a beneficiary for her estate.
Finding her siblings was quite difficult because they all were sent to different homes since their father abandoned them and their mother couldn’t take care of them.
While cleaning out her husband’s desk drawers, Margaret finds the name of an investigator, Tom Bateman, who did some work for Albert twenty-four years ago. Little did Margaret know that he had hired Mr. Bateman to look for Margaret's family.
Tom agrees to continue looking for Margaret’s family after all these years even though it is something Margaret is worried about.
Margaret is reluctant to go back to Coal Creek because of her horrible childhood and possible secrets that were never revealed.
Tom turned out to be a wonderful companion and investigator. Margaret had some hope that he would help her find her siblings especially since he found Caldonia who was like a second mother to Margaret and her siblings.
I couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to find out what Tom and Margaret would uncover and if they would find any of her siblings.
WHEN I LAST SAW YOU is another gem from Bette Lee Crosby.
It is a beautiful read filled with the love of family and hope, but some heartbreaking situations as well.
You will not be disappointed in Ms. Crosby’s WHEN I LAST SAW YOU.
If you need something cozy and comforting, make this book your next read.
The characters and the story stayed with me long after I was done reading. 5/5
This book was given to me by the author via Book Funnel in exchange for an honest review.
Another gem from one of my favourite authors, Margaret Rose McCutcheon is mourning the death of Albert, her husband of fifty years. While clearing out his desk she finds the name of a private investigator. It seems Albert had started to try and track down Margaret’s eight siblings that she has lost touch with. Twenty four years later Margaret hires an investigator to help trace her family. Tom Bateman enters her life bringing changes Margaret never expected and uncovering secrets from the past. The story is told in two time lines. That of the Hobbs family in Coal Creek starting in 1901 and that of the current story of Margaret and her investigation. With characters you really care about, this story of love, abuse, deceit and family, gripped my attention and never let it go. I adored this story. A joy to read.
There are a few authors that have the art of writing southern women's fiction down to a science, and Bette Lee Crosby is one of those authors. Her stories blend together real world events, the past and present, and an array of emotions.
This novel focuses on Margaret, a woman that has just lost her husband and discovers that he had originally searched for her family many years before. We are taken down a path that shares her upbringing at the turn of the century in a small rural town in West Virginia, where most men ended up working (and eventually dying) in the coal mines. Growing up in small quarters and with a large family wasn't a hardship for Margaret and her siblings, but that is because they do not know any different because the most important thing was the love that they felt from their mother and each other.
The story flips back and forth between the past and the present and we learn more about her life growing up and the secrets that are kept hidden from her and several others. The journey she is on is one that is sad yet fulfilling as she rediscovers her siblings and family. Not every situation results in a happy ending, but Margaret is able to find closure in some situations and new life in others. She is able to do all of this with the help of a private investigator named Tom. There are many humorous situations (remember this is 1968 and morality standards were different) but their adventure brings them together and creates a new friendship.
While the crux of the story is about Margaret, the past focuses on her parents, Eliza and Martin. Martin is not a likable character and the way he treated Eliza and his children is heartbreaking, to say the least. I appreciated the positive light that was shone on Masons (Masonic Lodge) and that they watch out for their brother and his family.
If you are looking for southern women's fiction that will pull at your heartstrings, then anything by Bette will fill that bill and I highly recommend this book or any of her others.
I have been a fan of Bette Lee Crosby since I read her first book and have read all of her books since then. Her new book establishes her role as one of the premier writers of women's fiction. This book is women's fiction combined with historical fiction and it's fantastic. I wanted to finish it last night but fell asleep reading and it was the first thing that I picked up this morning. It's that good!
1968 - Atlanta. Margaret has just buried her husband of over 50 years and is facing immense grief. She is shocked when asked to update her will and name beneficiaries. She had no children and no family and didn't know what to do. Well, she did have family but they lost touch years ago and suddenly she felt an urge to find her lost brothers and sisters. She hires Tom, a retired investigator, to help her find her brothers and sisters. The quest takes them all over the South as they try to find family that she hasn't seen in 60 years. 1901 - West Virginia. Eliza married Martin, the love of her life. Their family was growing so he rented an apartment in Charleston where he worked and came on the weekends while she stayed in her mother's house with the children. As time passes, he comes home less frequently and she is suspicious that he has another women. When their 6th child is born, he won't come home and when she gets pregnant again, he wants her to drink some tea that will supposedly make her lose the baby. She feels that every child is a gift from God ad refuses to end her pregnancy. He gets angry and stays gone for months while she has to struggle to keep the children fed.
The way that the story is written we get alternating chapters from 1968 and 1901. Both of these women are stronger than they think they are and both have a strong love of family. These women were beautifully written and i understood the struggles that each of them faced. The author tied the two time periods together beautifully and the reader has a beautiful well told story featuring two strong and resilient women. This is a beautiful of family - both family by blood and family made up of the people we care about. It's about love and loss, strength and courage. These are two fictional women that I won't soon forget.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
When I Last Saw You by Bette Lee Crosby is a compelling and heartwarming story that I couldn’t put down! When Margaret’s husband Albert dies, she feels as if she is all alone. With no children of her own, her thoughts return to her childhood and her eight siblings—brothers and sisters who she hasn’t had contact with for decades. When she begins a search for her lost family, she learns as much about herself as she does about all that has transpired since the day she was separated from her mother and her siblings. This poignant story is brimming with warmth and heart. It is a lovely tribute to families, and especially mothers, who stop at nothing to ensure the health, safety, and happiness of their children. I loved the characters in this book, and I was as moved by their strength and bravery as much as I was touched and saddened by their hardships. The author has skillfully woven together two timelines to tell this story, each of them equally riveting; I was as enthralled and invested in learning about the history of Margaret’s family as I was about her quest to reunite with a family that she thought had been lost to her.
In When I Last Saw You, Bette Lee Crosby invites readers on a truly epic journey that explores the depths of the meaning of family. Written with a dual timeline, the story begins in the town of Heatherwood, Georgia in 1968 where Margaret McCutcheon has been left a childless widow. Crosby then takes us back to 1901 to the poverty-stricken coal mining hills of West Virginia as Margaret begins to search for the family that has been lost to her for practically her entire life. One of nine siblings, she becomes determined to put the pieces of her family tragedy together and perhaps discover the answer to a secret that has haunted her forever. This is a story of heartbreak, hope and resilience that remains with you long after the last page is turned.
With the help of an investigator, a widow from West Virginia sets out to search for her long-lost family. A heart-wrenching, heart-warming hold-your-breath novel. Bette Lee Crosby does everything right. Get in a chair with this book.
This is another wonderful novel by Ms Crosby! In When I Last Saw You, she writes of the hard times in the early 1900s, the love a woman has for her children, and the lengths she will go to in making sure her children are cared for when she knows she will be unable to provide for them. The second timeline, in 1968, is interesting as we follow Margaret’s search for her siblings. It was hard for me to put this book down. I was equally fascinated by both stories and their outcomes. It was easy to love characters and feel their emotions. I highly recommend this book.
Wow, Bette Lee Crosby has done it again! She is what I’d call a true storyteller. I have read more of her books than probably any other author and it’s simply because they are all just so good. When I was given the opportunity to read an arc of this new book, When I Last Saw You, I jumped at the chance because I knew I was in for a treat. And as usual, Bette did not disappoint. However, I was forewarned that I’d need tissues and that was very true as I found myself tearing up on several occasions. This is a story about family and the love between a mother and her children and the heartaches and sacrifices she goes through to do what’s right by her kids. The story is told in 2 different timelines. One telling of the life the mother and her 9 children had while dealing with her no good for nothing husband with his mean and selfish ways. The second being about the daughter, Margaret Rose, who as an older adult searches for her scattered siblings. Along this search she finds more than she bargains for. Not only does she find family but she learns that it’s never too late to accept change and find love and happiness. I absolutely loved this story and I know everyone who reads it will too. I’d like to thank Bette Lee Crosby for writing it and inviting me to read an early copy. It’s set to release on May 4, 2021 and at that time I will be sure to purchase my physical copy to add to my home collection. This is a much deserved 5 star read!
When I Last Saw You is the touching and soul-stirring story of Margaret McCutcheon as she tries to find her family after being separated for almost 50 years. This story is told in 2 different timelines; the first is 1968, shortly after her husband, Albert, has passed away, and she realizes she has no family around her. The 2nd is the early 1900's, when she was a child. As always, Bette Lee Crosby has written an emotional, heart-warming story that you just can not put down. I highly recommend you grab this book. I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy, in exchange for my honest review.

Now, after all these years, will Margaret be the one to find the pieces of her broken family?
My Thoughts: When I Last Saw You begins with Margaret dealing with the loss of her husband, which includes going through paperwork and discovering interesting details of what her husband had tried to do for her. Curious about why he didn’t pursue the investigation he had started, she reaches out to the last investigator, Tom Bateman. He wasn’t that interested in pursuing the case, but when they met up, she was able to persuade him to try.
From that point on, we follow Margaret and Tom as they pursue the trail of clues leading them to possibilities they had never imagined. Would Margaret find her family? Would the connection that has developed between her and Tom turn into something more than the working relationship?
The story had sad and heartfelt moments, and I laughed, cried, and held my breath as I waited to see what would finally happen.
I loved this book, so of course it earned 5 stars.
Margaret’s husband Albert dies and now she feels she is all alone. She has no children of her own and starts thinking about her childhood and her eight siblings who she hasn’t seen or talked with for decades. While cleaning out her husbands desk she finds a card for a Private Investigator a Mr. Bateman. She does hire him to try to locate her siblings. This story is filled with warmth, heart and heartache. I loved reading about their strength and bravery and was saddened by their hardships. The author wrote about two timelines in this book. I enjoyed learning about Margaret's family history and Margaret's quest to find her siblings and reunite with them after so many years. She and Tom travel all over to locate her siblings and Tom starts to have feelings for Margaret. Margaret also starts to have feelings for Tom but, because she was afraid of what people would think and she was afraid she would be betraying her late husband Albert she told Tom that she wasn't ready to take that step. If you want to know more about this book you truly, truly need to read this book. This book brought tears to my eyes at times. I truly loved reading this book!!
Bette Lee Crosby has such a unique, beautiful way of telling a story! This novel is told in dual timelines, beginning in 1901 and alternates easily to 1968 where the quest for Margaret Rose's ancestry search begins. Margaret Rose realizes that since her husband has passed on, she has no more family and the desire is strong to search for her eight siblings. Where did they all go? Why did her mother Eliza, have to separate her children? She hires a detective and immediately the journey begins! This is just a fabulous, heartfelt, family, love story that had me in tears at times, and laughing at others! It is a perfect time in our world today, to meet Margaret Rose and help to find her family! You may just find some life lessons we all need to know! I know I did! I absolutely loved this book
I received this book for free from the author for an honest review.
Honestly, I was blown away by this book. The mystery surrounding the nine siblings and why they had to part ways was intriguing. The pace was well-formed and kept me turning the pages. There were several life lessons here. Don't care what other people think and it is never too late to try are the big ones. I can not say much without spoiling but know this: The Hobbs family has so many secrets the come spilling out in many ways and by the end is fully resolved.
Grateful to the author and publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of When I Last Saw You ! What a lovely book ! I couldn't put it down. Margaret loses her husband and starts to question where her life goes from here. She hires a PI to find the family she was separated from when she was a child. Her childhood and that of her family is heartbreaking and sad yet at the same time , full of love. She goes in search of her family, there is good news and sad news but she soldiers on and when she least expects it , also finds a new love. Wonderful from beginning to end !
There is nothing a mother will not do for her children and Bette Lee Crosby’s latest novel, When I Last Saw You, proves that and more. Inspired by a true story, readers will be rooting for Margaret Rose and Eliza Hobbs as you accompany them on their epic journey of life, love, and healing. -Kay Bratt, International Bestselling author of Wish Me Home
What a wonderful book. I gave it 5 Stars with a box of Kleenex at my side. I read this with Kindle Unlimited. It takes place in Georgia and West Virginia, West Virginia being the main destination. It takes place over a 60+ year span with many main characters being introduced and followed along in this saga. This book isn’t for everybody, but for those of us who it is for, it will hit you hard and fast! Probably not for the younger generations, it would be hard to understand the frustration, anger and happiness that over 50 years of marriage can give you. If you are like me and the sole survivor of your family, with your parents, siblings and close relatives all gone to the next resting place, leaving you behind, this will be for you. Great story line… but I was thinking, how can I give this 5 stars without a pet involved.. .but wait there is Chance, so we are good. Now that I’m writing this, I don’t believe there was one bad language word in this book, but there was certainly domestic violence. My favorite quote from the book is ‘ If you Never Try you will Never Succeed’ Final thoughts… I hope that everyone has a ‘Tom’ in their life.
I received an ARC from the author. One of the reasons I really enjoyed this book is because of where we are in life today, the changes taken place. Margaret Rose McCutcheon was struggling with cleaning out her husbands desk and on his desk was the sign, If You Never Try You Will Never Succeed. She started cleaning out his desk, and she came across an invoice with not much info on it but determined her husband hired a private investigator. When she found her husband had a business card with the investigators name on it, she called him. Her husband had hired him to find her family. Tom Bateman at first said he was retired but eventually checked his notes and could still remember the case. Her husband had abruptly ended the investigation once he learned something about her father. Margaret hired him, and together they went looking to find her siblings. The story is told in two parts, Margaret's life as a child and Margaret's life after her husband's death but it is so neatly written that the two is told separately, but it isn't confusing. In the early 1900s, Eliza, Margaret's mother, was living in the house she grew up in with her six children. Her husband was living in Charleston, supposedly to work and send home money. We learn what life was like back then, how they survived, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her children. Margaret and Tom finally find a lead to finding one of her brothers and sister. In this part, we learn because they haven't seen each other in fifty years, what the years did to them. Times sure are different but one thing they all realized when their mother sent them away, so they could have a better life, they each took a piece of each one of them with them, and fifty years later they still carried it with them and remembered many things. But as we know what you think as a child and what you think after putting the different pieces together is two different things. This is two stories told separately and then blended together to tell the whole story with all the events that was happening at the time and how it affected them. Times were tough but what love can accomplish comes through in this story. As Margaret kept saying if you never try, you will never succeed.
WHEN I LAST SAW YOU by Bette Lee Crosby I have read all of Bette Lee’s books but must say this book is my all time favorite! Now this is saying a lot since all of her books are good. It starts with Margaret’s husband dying suddenly and Margaret finds papers indicating that, unbeknownst to Margaret, Albert was checking up on her family from the past. This book goes back and forth, but is easy to follow. I highly recommend this book, although as you can see I am not going into detail. You have to find out for yourself. I can assure you that following Margaret’s family is so interesting you will find it had to put the book down.
Linda’s Book Obsession Reviews “When I Last Saw You” by Bette Lee Crosby, 2021
Wow! Bette Lee Crosby, the author of “When I Last Saw You” has written a captivating, intriguing and heart-felt story. It is hard to believe that Bette Lee Crosby actually bases this on a true family situation. I love the way that Bette Lee Crosby vividly describes the characters, the events, the landscape, and the plot. There are two timelines in the story, West Virginia in 1901 and Georgia in 1968. The author describes her colorful and dramatic characters as complex, and complicated. In both timelines, there are secrets.
Margaret Rose McCutcheon, in 1968, is in mourning for her deceased husband. She realizes that she doesn’t have a beneficiary if anything happens to her. Then she has a recollection of once having a family. After going through her late husband’s papers, she hires a detective that had once worked for him to locate her family.
Eliza Hobbs, in West Virginia in 1901 has many children, and her husband disappears often. He seems to appear, and then there is another baby to take care of. During this time, women have very little rights, and Eliza is left to her own resources in raising her family and trying to keep them safe. Her husband, Martin is an abusive man who sends a token amount of money for Eliza to take care of the family. It is amazing how the author combines and connects the stories and the timelines.
Bette Lee Crosby is a master storyteller and an amazing author who has written a memorable, thought-provoking, emotional novel that shows us that sometimes you have to find your past to move on to your future. I would highly recommend this amazing novel! Happy reading!
This story starts with Margaret Rose as she is mourning the loss of her husband and left with no living relatives and wonders at this point in her life where her 8 siblings ended up after their family was separated.
As she goes to look for her siblings the chapters reveal Margaret's investigative progress as we are given more insight into her mother Eliza's story in the alternating chapters. Oh Eliza. If only men like Martin could see that children are made by 2 people, such a selfish man.
The dual timeline between the 1901's and 1968's time period before computers and the ease of googling and handheld devices always feels so foreign like a different language. I remember watching my mother read through the microfiche at the library and really wanting to get my hands on that machine. But tracking down a person with no internet, no cell phone, no real papertrail now is an adventure and so interesting to follow along.
This story has such beautiful descriptions of times gone by and the importance of family in life. Life is made up of experiences and human interactions. The way each of the siblings she was able to reconnect with remembered and told their own pasts only sharing the good memories. Even though they grew up with the least they had the most love available from their mother Eliza.
Margaret also learned that when she thought her life was over, going on this adventure to find her siblings she was given a second chance to live a new life with her family that she thought she had lost forever.
I am more of an Elder Millennial and I will say YOLO whenever anything comes up and definitely when family asks to do stuff. My mom would try not to impose on her sister and I am like go impose on her, she wants to hear from you. You only live once and your family wants to hear from you and hear about your life. I mean unless your name is Martin, then just send money.

Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours for having me on this tour and @betteleecrosby for gifting me this gem of a book. It's like a time capsule. I didn't want this book to end!
This was my first Bette Lee Crosby novel, and it won’t be my last! I love how she utilizes dual timelines to tell a story of heartache, loss, and family secrets.
It’s 1968, and Margaret Rose McCutcheon’s beloved husband, Albert, dies suddenly. Now she has decisions to make about his law firm and their estate. As she’s going through Albert’s office, Margaret finds paperwork from a private investigator. When she calls the number on the card, retired PI Tom Bateman informs Margaret that Albert had hired him to search for her siblings. But once certain information was obtained, Albert had called off the search.
In the early 1900s, Margaret Rose lived in Coal Creek, Virginia, with her mama and daddy and eight siblings. Life wasn’t easy, money was scarce, and daddy didn’t always come home from work. Daddy had dark moods, he drank, and eventually, he came home less and less. Soon Margaret’s mama knew she would have to protect her children at all costs, even if they would end up scattered across the South.
Margaret hires Tom once again to find out what happened to the siblings she lost touch with decades ago. As Tom and Margaret work together, Margaret revisits the past but also discovers how to move on to a bright future.
𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮 will tug at your heart and stir up your emotions. It certainly displays the power of love and family bonds but reminds us that family can be anyone we choose.
Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and @betteleecrosby for an invitation to the tour and a signed copy.
Lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling. I liked the characters and feel Crosby did justice to all of them; good, bad, rotten and mediocre. Kudos for writing a strong woman, albeit defenseless in 1901.
I loved the story. I would highly recommend.

What started out as kind of slow and a little depressing turned into a very good book. Told in dual timelines, recently widowed Margaret Rose (in 1968) finds paperwork in her late husband’s desk for a private detective she didn’t know he had hired. She soon discovers he had been hired to track down Margaret’s many siblings she hadn’t seen since she was a teenager. She decides to rehire the detective to continue the search. Back in 1901 in West Virginia Margaret Rose’s mother struggles to keep food on the table as her mean heartless husband generally only shows up often enough to get her pregnant while only occasionally giving her money to help with expenses. As the two stories come together, we come to appreciate the character development and the family “secret” that has been buried for so long.
When I Last Saw You by Bette Lee Crosby After reading Bette Lee Crosby for the first time I messaged her on Facebook and asked her what I should read next. She suggested When I Last Saw You because it was a story she said, “actually taken from a true story that happened in my Mom’s family.” Now that I have completed the book, I am eager to hear Ms. Crosby talk about it and she has promised me she will be doing just that during a live Facebook chat after Thanksgiving. Margaret Rose McCutcheon, the main character, has lost her husband and now finds herself alone. They had no children and she has lost touch with everyone in her family. She was one of nine children born to a loving mother and a not-so-loving father; something we find out about as the story develops. Often, I am bothered when a book goes back and forth in time with each chapter. Not so, with Ms. Crosby’s writing. At the perfect time, she switches back to the past, and then, when the timing is once again right, she brings us back to the future. With this method, the reader learns how Margaret’s former life affected the life she is now living. As I said, Margaret has lost contact with everyone from her past. With the assistance of a former private investigator, she travels south to see if she can discover what happened to everyone. Ms. Crosby’s words flow across the page; making her writing an easy read. If you have never read anything by Bette Lee Crosby, this is a good book to start with. You won’t be disappointed. I am now ready to read another one. 11.22.2021
Margaret, late sixties, is recently widowed. When going through her husband's files, she finds a receipt from a private detective. She calls him and finds out that he did some work for her late husband, years ago, trying to uncover the truth of Margaret's childhood. Margaret hires Tom to get back on the case, because she wants to know the truth, finally. Why did her large family break up? Why did their mother send the children away?
Although Tom is retired, he's intrigued. After a bitter divorce, he doesn't have that much going on in his life, so agrees to investigate, spending many hours talking with Margaret about her family, trying to get leads. He sets out on the road, but after his initial foray, asks her to fly in and join him. She agrees, and they begin their search together. As they drive around the South, investigating (it's 1968, so there's no Google), they grow close.
As they return to Margaret's roots, another story begins to unfold in parallel: that of Eliza, Margaret's mother, and the early years of the family, before all the children were sent to live away from their mother. Dirt poor, living in a shack in West Virginia coal country, Eliza is a married to the brutal, selfish Martin. He gets a job in town, leaving her to raise their ever-growing brood in desperate poverty while he lives well and has other women to entertain him. Eliza is a good woman, and the children are loved. Martin visits occasionally, keeping Eliza pregnant and the children frightened.
In the present day, as Margaret travels with Tom and begins to learn what happened to her family, she is also learning about herself, coming to understand the cost of the life-changing concessions she made to her late husband. Will she finally, now, prioritize herself and seize happiness? Is it too late?
When I Last Saw You is a beautiful story, richly detailed, with characters who stayed with me after I finished the book. Highly recommended.
Margaret Rose McCutcheon finds her life in an upheaval after his husband, Albert, passes away. Albert's law partner is worried about what she will do with the shares in the company and the fact Margaret has no children to leave her estate to. They had no children but Margaret had eight siblings with whom she had not been in touch with for decades. She knows now that her priority in life is to find her siblings. She hires an investigator to help with the task. Part of the story takes place in the early 1900's where she remembers her mom, Eliza and how hard life was for her, the trying times of having so many children and living in poverty and a father who was not very nice and was away a lot. A mother's love is so deep that she will do anything to protect her children. There are family secrets that have never been told. The other time line is 1968 when Margaret locates some siblings, learns sad tales of others but keeps reminding herself that "if you never try, you will never succeed." Can Margaret let some happiness finally come into her own life. This was such a compelling story and definitely highly recommend. You won't be disappointed. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I have read several of Bette Lee Crosby’s books (which were all wonderful reads), but I have to say that When I Last Saw You is by far my favorite. The story was so real and my heart ached for many of the characters, especially that of Margaret’s mother, Eliza. This story took place in the very early 1900’s, and then in 1968-1969. It’s hard to think of a time when we could not jump on our computers or phones to look somebody up or search for them, especially long lost family members. I’m so grateful for the technology that we have today to be able to do those things. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again- you can never go wrong with a Bette Lee Crosby novel. Do yourself a favor and read this book, I promise you that it will touch your heart and stick with you for a very long time.
