About the author

Mary Buffett is a best-selling author, international speaker, entrepreneur, political and environmental activist. Ms. Buffett’s first book Buffettology, co-written with David Clark in 1997, was an immediate New York Times and Business Week best-seller. Since that time, all seven of Ms. Buffett’s books have been best-sellers.

This was a mixed bag for me. I was going to rate it 3 stars, but after some thought, I’ve decided to go with 4 stars.

I liked the simple, easily understood language but there were a few times when I thought the topic itself was a little too dumbed down. At one point, I double checked to see if I was listening to a version geared towards high school students. One of the example scenarios really completed that feeling for me and I started to question the scope of the book. I stuck with it though, and in the end, I understand the necessity of the rather simple examples.

I felt there were some good starting points and intelligent rational for beginning investors, but also some information that was better suited toward intermediate investors. There are takeaways for both, and the relevancy of the advice seems to be dependent on the type of investor you want to be – casual with a fundamental understanding, or a more serious and continuously informed investor. All in all, I’m satisfied with the information I came away with, and if I choose to further my investing knowledge, the advice shared here will set me on the right path to a more studious approach with hopefully even greater outcomes.

Summary of Economic Moats/competitive advantage Chapter:

Economic most is having advantage over its competitors.Some of economic Moats are,
1. Branding
2. Economics of scale
3. Legal barriers to entry
4. High switching costs

Moats may NOT last forever, so review if business you invested is still relevant ten years from now.

Some companies have multiple Moats.

Summary of Valuation chapter:
1. Net-Net model: Buy stock if it's share price is less than Net current assets value (NCAV) per share.

NCAV = current assets - total liabilities

NCAV per share= NCAV/ total shares

2. Margin of Safety: Advise is to buy a stock at below 2/3rd of NCAV per share.
(Meaning of this is evening if company closes today, we still make money- buying below liquidation value)

But still things can go wrong. Company may choose not to close even if it loose money and net current asset value run dry over time.

Hence, Warren advices to only invest in circle of competence. He never invested in tech stocks because he did not understand them well.

2. Price-to-book value/Net Asset value (NAV) method

Note: This method considers both current and non-current assets.

NAV= book value=equity=net worth


NAV per share= equity/no. Of shares

Margin of Safety is 20%

So, if stock price< 80% of NAV per share, buy it

Other way of calculation: ( most websites do this way)

Price/book:-

stock price is used for price & book value of equity is used for book

So, if price/book ratio is less than 0.8 buy it

This method is used for physical asset heavy companies only.
Service companies like Google, Facebook do not require huge asset to run their business. Warren does NOT invest in such business. He invests only in physical asset heavy businesses.

3. Price-to-earnings (PE) Ratio

A. Compute avg historical PE ratio of the company
B. Take 30% margin of Safety: 0.7* avg historical PE ratio
C. Look at current earnings per share (EPS)
D. EPS* value we got in B will be our entry price of stock.

4. Dividend yield

= Expected divided per share/share price

Check if divided paid is consistent. If it is paid for past 10 years, it is considered consistent.

Aim for dividend yield to be higher than 2% of risk free rate. Risk free rate is higher of bond rate & bank deposit rate.

Diversify your portfolio.
Nobody can be right all the time. Diversifying our portfolio shows that we are humble and smart enough to give ourselves right to be wrong and still have the ability to profit from our overall portfolio.

There are two types of investors;
1. With discipline to diversify
2. Bet-it-all gambling mindset- loses money

Rules;
1. Enter into stock or market when it is undervalued.
Warren stayed out of the Market in 1969 when stocks where overvalued and got back after four years.
2. Never put more than 10% in any stock.
Allocate funds based on your confidence but should not be more than 10% in any particular stock.
3. Stronger the stock, higher weight. But not more than 10%
Rank the stocks and allocate
Eg: rank A- 10%
rank B- 9%
rank C- 8%
4. Review your portfolio at least once a year.
Read annual reports and quarterly reports. Take notes of any news from ordinary.
5. Do NOT sell purely based on price.
If fundamentals have declined and you have lost confidence in the business, then sell if off.
If price decline and fundamentals are stong, in fact buy more of it. Warren does it.
6. Do NOT sell when prices rises
Review the business and revaluate price based on valuation methods.
If based on valuation methods, stock is considered undervalued, in fact buy more.
If business is performing well, you may choose to not sell.
Go back to fundamentals!

Summary of Mindset of a successful investor

1. Patience: impatience & eagerness to get rich quickly is the key cause of failed investements and people buying into scams that promise high returns
2. Independent thinking/ Contradiction thinking: Being able to stand against the temptation to follow the crowd is the mark of a true contrarian investor

I wanted to give a lower rating for this book, but I couldn't because I learned so much. I did not come from a business or accounting background so I don't have the fundamentals of reading financial statements (i.e, balance sheet, income statement, cash-flow statement). I've heard of those terms, but never know how to read them.

The reason that I wanted to give a lower rating is that it does feel like they are trying to sell the book by using Warren Buffet's name. It's probably ok, but what kinda ticked me was this repeated quote/joke that you can't speed up on getting a baby in a month by getting nine women pregnant at the same time. I mean it sounds funny, but have it once at the beginning and another one at the closing chapter feels too much.

For me personally, I was already using the technique outlined in the first part of the book where I kinda just buy stocks from the company that I'm a customer to. It was really the section on the financial statement and valuation calculation (secret 5 & 6) that's true gold to me.

The book gives basic idea of investing and is perfect for total newbies, who know nothing about investing. It is written in simple, easy to understand way. I would split the book into 2 parts: first one is about how to save, behavior, where to find ideas for stocks to buy, etc and the second part goes over accounting, balance sheets, etc and explains some main formulas and terminology. A lot of the formulas are from Benjamin Graham. Didn’t learn much new things that is why I gave it the 3 stars.

7 secrets to Investing Like Warren Buffett is an excellent book with a variety of tips for anyone wanting to view how to improve your finances, grow your investments and define a path forward to financial freedom. A good starter book and beneficial in many ways. I suggest you take notes and be open to the processes outlines. I highly recommend this book. I took lots of notes and will reread it on my journey.

This is is very straight to the point, easy to go through. Some chapters are as short as one to two pages, which is great, no bullshit, straight to the point. If you are someone who has some understanding of investments, do NOT need to read this book as they are very basics. There are certainly not secrets but basics to most people.

However, if you are someone who is looking for their first book for investing or personal finance. Highly recommended this book. The book did not only introduces you about the basics of value investing (how to pick stocks, MOATS, valuation methods, etc), it also teaches you how to interpret the financial statements and some important habits that everyone (not just investors) should follow.

Really enjoyed this book!

Well, I always wanted to learn the basics of investing in such a way that can help me to initiate my transactions and get into stock market with confidence, and this book has completed that purpose . When it comes to financial books, it seems boring but the author made it so interesting and easy for us that I was enjoying every chapter of this book. I would recommend if you want to think of your future income , learn basics to advance techniques in simplified way, go for it. You will not only learn but also enjoy this.

If I met the authors, I would honestly ask them for my money back. They teach the EPS growth formula as if it is the best thing in the world to value a stock when the truth is that even Graham himself stated that it is not a good method for valuing stocks. The publisher is tossing around big names like Buffett and Graham hoping that their celebrity would attract sellers when the truth is that this book has very little to offer. The information given about how to read financial reports is dumbed down to the point that it is going to have little to no value to the reader no matter what your level of expertise. While it is written for beginners, they sell the reader on the idea that they have enough info to start analyzing stocks and betting their money on the market. The best advice this book offers is more about personal finance which it covers in the first few chapters, a better place to go for that type of material would be anything written by Gail Vaz-Oxlade. There are much better books than this to start out with including investing for dummies and then when you've acquired enough knowledge, Grahams original version of the intelligent investor.

There’s so much great content in this book. Marry has a wonderful ability to talk about things that most people would not find fun, in a simple and easy to understand way.

The book covers investing 101, gives you great reminders on how to keep investing simple, and lays out how to read financial statements in an effective manner. It’s a great book for someone who wants to improve their investing capabilities.

look at two things for an income statement: 1. 10 year record of profits and 10 year record of return on equity to show how efficient the business is and using its equity.

searching for price to book value (P/B) that is 0.8 or lower (this allows for a margin of error. It means you are buying stocks for 80% of what they’re worth, should a company go under, their assets would still be divvied up and you would not lose money.) This really can only be accomplished for business that need physical assets to operate (banks, insurance, etc) not tech companies (google, FB)

Marry Buffet was the daughter-in-law of Warren buffet. She observed warren buffet closely for 12 years and learned mindset and techniques from warren buffet. Sean is an investor who has delivered many workshops and seminars on investment in around 45 countries in the world. He is the reverie of the warren buffet and mentee of Marry buffet. They have both written this book in very simple language. Even a layman can understand many things about the stock market easily.

In this book readers will learn how to read financial statements, balance sheets, cashflows, which are considered to be complex things by many investors, are explained in simple language. One of the core philosophies of warren buffet investment is value investing. This was explained with live examples in simple terms which I never knew before. I would say this would be a perfect start if you are naive in your investment journey and never heard about financial terms in your life.

They not only spoke about the technical part of the investment but the psychology part, how the mindset of investors should be. How to react when there is a bear market and how to react when there is a bull market. Author also put light on economic moats which are easy to understand for any kind of reader.

My take, this is the best book for people who want to start their journey in the stock market. It will give you a better understanding of complex terms and what to do and not to do in the stock market. If you are already familiar with the stock market, this book is not for you. It was written keeping in mind of naive investors. Overall, a good read which covers all parts of the stock market in an easy and understandable language

Este libro me sorprendió a dos niveles, el primero es el personal, con consejos muy aterrizados y un vistazo a lo que hace genial a Warren Buffett (pues, a parte del obvio haberle escuchado decir que él es un 25% coca cola, con lo que me siento completamente identificado, jajaja...) también está el tema que ha sido el mejor inversor de todos los tiempos y que ha llevado a muchos de sus inversionistas a ser millonarios. El libro arranca con una parte de sus hábitos pero luego llega al segundo aspecto que quiero resaltar, se vuelve más técnico (sin nunca ser aburrido) hasta llegar a dar consejos directos de como evaluar empresas revisando la contabilidad para tomar mejores decisiones de invertir en la bolsa de acuerdo a la metodología que le ha funcionado a Warren, y que ha aplicado en sus casi 70 años de carrera líder de Berkshire Hathaway.

To me an average book. Yes it covers useful topics like how to read a balance sheet, income statement, cash-flow statement, but majority of the book was filling pages (or leaving blank ones) to make the book artificially more extensive. Big fonts, lots of spaces. For example, the list of investment sectors and industries alone covered 8 pages. You anyway won't be reading the list of all possible areas to invest in - something you can just search online and get a dynamic one. Or another example of copying the balance sheet of a construction company, which was mentioned 10 pages earlier.

On the contrary, Dividend Yield and Growth Formula were rewarded barely 1.5 pages each. Especially the last one I needed more in-depth explanation, but alas none.

Overall, the value of the amount of text read versus the amount of useful information received was hardly 30%.

Excellent book to add to your toolbox of financial knowledge if you are a beginner to mid-level investor and is looking to dig into the workings and concepts behind Warren's Buffet's investment strategies.

This book contains practical exercises that allowed me to refocus and hone in on my financial goals which I find valuable. It shares a lot of Warren's quotes and stories which I enjoyed to put into perspective of the chapter and felt that I was gaining insight into his thoughts.

Yet, what made it relatable and unique was the story of Sean Seah and his personal success as well because he started out like any of us and proved to be done with these methods, Mary's guidance and Warren Buffet's teachings.. I would recommend this read!

I enjoyed this book. I feel that is more beginner orientated as they do not dive too deep into the techniques, but this was expected. The book read easily, and concepts was explained in layman terms. I would not necessary call this 7 secrets to investing, but rather 7 chapters to investing. Some of the 'secrets' at the start is obvious or well know if you know anything about investing. The last 4 'secrets' is where the true value in this book is. I enjoyed the chapters about ratios and how to use them to value invest and will use them in my portfolio. This book is very value investing orientated, as this is Warren Buffet's investing philosophy. A good read for anyone who has not started investing.

Current and very useful information for the greenest of investors, well , not really, a green investor would require some instruction on opening and setting up a account in the case of a self directed investment account or how to setup a account with a brokerage, what to expect, how to initiate a buy/sell order.

I just if your last name is Buffett and with Warren in his 90's, all other Buffet's have been exposed to these small details.

I'll have to Google it, but I am pretty sure that the majority of the 7 million plus population does not have a trading account.

Google has bout 52% of Americans owning stock , so that leaves 150+ million opportunity .

This was from the ex daughter in law of Warren Buffett who is profiting off of conversations from her ex father in law. Mary and another guy, Sean, share their life experiences to help you become a better investor.

This is a very dense book that gives you "secrets" to investing. This would be a great guide for someone new to investing. It wasn't much of a revelation for me and it seemed confusing bouncing from Mary's POV to Sean's POV without any indication except for the tense. There are 200 other books just like this. Most people are probably reading this because they want to hear Warren Buffett.

This was a really great book for a beginner like myself. I really felt that it spoke in a language that was very easy for me to follow. And it really gave me all the information I need to kind of start my journey into learning about the stock market. However since this was written for beginners it didn’t go into a lot of depth on many topics and just gave you the wider picture kind of. So I don’t think that you can start investing solely with the information from this book but I really do believe that it is an amazing starting point to learning about investing. I would recommend this book for all beginners that are looking for an easy to read book that’s not hard to understand

Apresentação muito fácil e bem estruturada de aspetos chave da avaliação de uma empresa como o balanço e a demonstração de resultados, assim como dos rácios que daí se podem extrair para decidir se se tratam de bons candidatos para investirmos o nosso dinheiro, através da compra de ações.
Para especialistas da área financeira e de contabilidade talvez seja muito básico, mas para quem queira começar a compreender balanços e demonstrações de resultados é, quanto a mim, um excelente ponto de partida.

Como qualquer livro sobre investimentos dos vários que li, as expectativas vão diminuindo a partir dos 2/3 do livro. Este vende-se "à sombra" de Buffett, ex-sogro da co-autora.

Na teoria todos estes livros são fantásticos e bastaria seguir o que lá está; mas na prática há milhares de variáveis não descritas, servindo o livro para muito pouco, na minha opinião, face aos objectivos que promove.

Serve sempre para nos acautelarmos, ainda que conheçamos vários princípios de investimento, pois por vezes deixamo-nos ir e ao ler de vez em quando sobre o tema somos como que "acordados".
