Criminal investigator Larry Macklin faces the worst moment of his life when his father, Sheriff Ted Macklin, is attacked and left for dead by the side of the road. Larry’s days become a blur of hospital vigils and watching from the sidelines as his colleagues, Pete and Julio, launch an investigation into what happened. In order to help clear their schedules, Larry takes over several cases from Pete and Julio, including a string of high-end auto thefts and a mysterious assault where the victim clearly knows his assailant but refuses to press charges. These do little to distract Larry from worrying about his dad, who’s slowly recovering but showing worrying signs of brain damage. Then the department is rocked by a discovery that closes a five-year-old missing-person case… and points to a disturbing answer regarding the attack on the sheriff. As the Adams County criminal investigations team tries to tie up loose ends that don’t make any sense, a dangerous winter storm sets its sights on North Florida. Before the storm is over, Larry will find himself on a wild ride to catch the most mysterious criminal of his career.

This one better than the last. The story kept my interest and curious as to connections to other people of Interest and a missing girl we read about in previous book in this series. Her story is put to rest when we find her. I can't say much more about that though without spoiling so I do not do that. Want people to enjoy the story and see for themselves how things turn out. Speaking of that I will say there are a few twist n turns in this one and I'm on the fence as to liking it or conflicted in how it wraps up. It is good story though and worth a read. Oh these stories are in northern pan handle Florida. Kind of funny to me that in this story there is concern of Winter storm coming. Maybe 1 or 2 inch ice or snow that might last a day.... umm I live Western NY , Buffalo suburb and that is so funny to me. Really that is nothing! However I get that when you almost never see snow or icy streets it can be very scary but really a storm just made me have an unexpected laugh in this story. Over all it is a good story and entertaining. I like his Dad who well,,,, stops to help someone and things go bad from there. Read it. Ok Peace.
Pretty typical Macklin mystery. I could not put my finger on which mystery was the main story item. I know that in the end, they ran together, but neither was really the main emphasis. They did come together at the very end, but that seemed to be something that came out of the blue. All of a sudden someone barely mentioned in the story spills his guts to Larry and the whole thing is solved. I kept waiting for one story to take the lead and all of a sudden my Kindle Paper White says I'm 97% finished. They're free to read with Amazon's inexpensive monthly fee, so I'll keep reading them, and others, as they're published. I wouldn't pay to buy the book though. I will buy books by Sandford and Grisham though.
I WAS ONLY AT 4% AND WAS WORRIED AND MAD ALREADY. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN THE BOOK AND MAD BECAUSE I HAD TO STOP READING (baking pumpkin squares). I HAD ONE EYE ON MY KINDLE AND TRYING TO WATCH MY TIMER WITH THE OTHER. I SHOULD NOT HAVE STARTED READING BEFORE I WAS DONE BAKING. GLAD EVERYTHING TURNED OUT GOOD . . . THE SQUARES AND THE BOOK. THE BOOK WAS AS I EXPECTED VERY EXCITING, I WAS SUPRISED I EVEN NEEDED A TISSUE OR TWO FOR THIS ONE. SNIFF! ;D
All the books in this series are dependable for a good read, and this is no different. Always something happening in this little town. One of my favorite things is that although the story flows through each book, you can read it alone to a satisfying conclusion. Can’t wait for the next one.
This was one of the best stories, maybe because it cleaned up some of the happenings in previous books, but there was a good flow to it. I drove through S. Carolina during an ice storm, so know how bad the area can be. Things are looking up in Calhoun! (Just a few typos)
Another terrific Larry Macklin tale - Love all the characters in this series, better with each new book, even the four legged ones. This story is about as twisted as they come, keeping you guessing to the end. Loved it and sure hope Mr. Howe is already hard at work on the next in the series.
I can’t wait for the next Larry Macklin book. I have yet to be disappointed with anything this author has written. Don’t just read this series read anything you can find and you will enjoy them.
This is the 16th Book in the Larry Macklin series I have read them All. This story began with a shocking story line. The story stalled a bit, but pick back up in latter chapters. Still a very good read. Not for action junkies.
It's hard to believe I have to wait for more books!
I just couldn't stop reading till the end! Waiting for the next book will be hard, but I love the characters and look forward to reading more about them!
Love this series! First off, my favorite part of Florida, so I can place where things are happening. The characters are great, the stories are believable and they are a very easy read! Can’t wait for more!
You can always rely on these books to be an enjoyable read. Characters you have come to know and love, a good plot with a twist or two. And the lovable dog, Mauser.
Love the Macklin men and would so like to cuddle with Mauser. Should you put them on film I want to cast Larry and father. Know exactly how they should look!
I enjoyed the book and have read the entire series. I did think that the plot was too complex, and lost some credibility as a result. The ending unraveled the mystery very quickly.
Nice switch from top detective to taking on other caseload. Eventually they cross but it gives so many characters to play a part. This series never disappoints.
An enjoyable police procedural. This author is talented enough to spin a suspenseful story while developing his characters so well that I really cared about them.
