Amish Inn #2

An Unlikely Match

Rate this book
"When sparks fly between a good Amish girl and a hunky member of the Hollywood elite, even matchmaking innkeepers Esther and Lizzie know better than to fan the flames. Evelyn Schrock has dismissed the attempts of every young man in her small Amish community to court her. She's willing to wait for a suitor who shares her curiosities about life and faith. The only reason Jayce Clarkson is in Amish country hefting equipment for his famous father's movie production company is for the paycheck. The homestyle cooking at the Peony Inn is a perk though, as is his friendship with Evelyn Schrock. If Jayce can endure his dad's put-downs for a month, he'll finally be in a position to make a fresh start--somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and the shadow of his checkered past. To matchmakers Esther and Lizzie, the widowed sisters who operate the inn, Jayce seems like a good man stuck in a life he doesn't want. But the boy isn't Amish, and that leaves far too much room for broken hearts. Despite that, Jayce and Evelyn start to realize that they can't deny their growing attraction. Any path forward seems impossible, and they will have to learn what the future will look like when they leave their fate in Gott's hands. "Beth Wiseman's An Unlikely Match will keep you turning the pages as you are pulled into this heartwarming and unpredictable Amish romance story about Evelyn and Jayce, two interesting and compelling characters. Beth doesn't disappoint keeping you guessing as to how this story will end." --Molly Jebber, bestselling Amish inspirational historical romance author "This was such a sweet story. I cheered on Evelyn and Jayce the whole way. Jayce is having issues with his difficult father, who's brought a Hollywood crew to Amish country to film a scene in a nearby cave. Evelyn has a strong, supportive family, so she feels for Jayce immediately. As they grow closer and help each other overcome fears and phobias, they know this can't last. But God, and two persnickety Amish sisters, Lizzie and Esther, have other plans. Can a Hollywood boy fall for an Amish girl and make it work? Find out. Read this delightful, heartwarming story!" --Lenora Worth, author of Their Amish Reunion"--

This is an Amish Clean Romance, and this is the second book in the Amish Inn series. I have read and review the first book in this series before reading this book. I do not think you have to read the first book before picking this book up. I have to say this series is a very different for the normal Amish Clean Romance series. I love the characters in this book. Jayce is an Englisher that stays at the Inn with his Dad because they are filming a movie. Jayce fells in love with a cute Amish girl named Evelyn. I love both Jayce and Evelyn characters. I also loved seeing more of the character of Gus for the first book. We get some of Gus's backstory, and I really love Gus. I am so happy his character is more in this book. I love the character development this book gets, and this book is so character driven. I think this book does a good job showing some of the difference between the Amish and the English world. I love a book that I fell in love with all the characters. I did not want to put this book down at anytime during me reading this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zondervan) or author (Beth Wiseman) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

An Unlikely Match is the second book in the "Amish Inn" series. In the first book entitled, Picture of Love, we are introduced to two elderly Amish sisters, Esther and Lizzie, who run a bed and breakfast called "The Peony Inn" located in rural Indiana. I read the first book a year ago and I really enjoyed these characters and the way the like to play matchmaker to "help" a young couple fall in love. Esther is the more practical sister, while Lizzie is quirky and is often at odds with a man, Gus, who rents a house on the property.

I really enjoy reading novels about Amish life. While I don’t think I would fare too well with all the manual labor, I appreciate how the young Amish woman, Evelyn, describes her family lifestyle:

“We work hard, we love deeply, and we worship God.”-p. 224

A simpler way of life has a definite appeal to me as it does to the young man, Jayce, who comes to the inn with his father who is shooting part of a movie in Indiana. Lizzie gives permission for the entire cast and crew to stay at The Peony Inn, and there’s a sharp contrast between the life the guests are accustomed to in Hollywood and the slower pace of Amish life in rural America.

Jayce happens to meet Evelyn after an argument with his father. Jayce is trying to hold on to his faith while questioning his Hollywood upbringing and family relationships. He finds a friend in Evelyn, and together they wrestle with questions of love, faith, and family.

This is a truly heartwarming book with lots of laughter along the way. I love a happy ending and this book doesn’t disappoint! At one point in the story, Jayce has to make some major decisions about his life and he comes across a note that was left for him with the following advice:

"Each day is a gift from God to be cherished. Fill your heart with the people you love. Cling tightly to your convictions, but allow room for change and growth. Be the person you want to be, and never forget that anything is possible. Above all else, stay wrapped in God’s presence and follow His lead."-p. 306

Lots of things to think about for us all!

The final book in this series, A Season of Change, is due for release at the end of the month. I can’t wait to read it and enjoy another matchmaking effort by the two sisters and see what life lessons are learned along the way!

When I started reading this, I immediately knew that I had read book 1 of this series. I remembered the very memorable characters from book 1, such as grumpy Gus, Lizzie, Esther. I was so happy to continue this fun and enjoyable series. I enjoyed the book because it was a really light-hearted read for me. There was drama, laughs and so enjoyable.

I found this heartwarming romance very nice as Amish girl gets to know Enlish boy or "man" as Evelyn never fails to point out. A page-turning book that will keep you reading till the very end!

I received a complimentary ebook copy of this book, which I highly recommend from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

A return visit for me to The Peony Inn, and the delightful widowed sister's Esther and Lizzie who run the Inn along with some matchmaking.
Now with the arrival of Hollywood and RV's in their yard the sister's are at their breaking point taking care of meals and the Inn and non-stop laundry, they need help!
Grumpy Gus is back, and so is the bickering, but the sisters are so busy. Enter Jayce, who knew a rich Hollywood kid would know how to cook, but that is not all we learn about him and he has a growing friendship with Evelyn Schrock. Jayce likes what he sees about Evelyn's life, but could he forsake two cars, phones, and lots of money for the simple life.
This read kept me page turning, we become immersed in these people lives, their ups and downs, and you may need ear plugs when you meet Rose! With her there is another book coming! Yes!
I received this book through the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.

An Unlikely Match by Beth Wiseman is the 2nd book in The Amish Inn Novels. Esther and Lizzie have twelve guests descending on The Peony Inn from Los Angeles. Lizzie told Esther that the guests are from a produce company with meetings in the area. It turns out that it is a production company. They will be staying a month while they shoot a movie nearby. The ladies are unprepared for the two limousines as well as two large RVs with their loud generators. It seems that some of the guests are not willing to live without modern conveniences. Jayce Clarkson meets Evelyn Schrock and is smitten with her. Evelyn knows that they cannot be, but she is attracted to Jayce. He is the first man with whom she could envision having a future. What does God have in store for these star-crossed lovers? An Unlikely Match can be read as a standalone, but you will be missing out on a cute Amish novel if you do not read A Picture of Love. I thought An Unlikely Match was well-written with great characters. I love Esther and Lizzie. In addition, there is grumpy Gus who surprises you at times. We get to meet Rose who is Esther and Lizzie’s new helper. They need to keep Rose away from sugar and caffeine. There is one scene with Rose that had me laughing so hard. An Unlikely Match is a character driven book. I enjoyed the witty banter. We get to see the differences between the Englisch and Amish worlds in this story. Jayce is curious about the Amish. He asks Evelyn many questions about the Amish and their beliefs. There are some touching moments in this tale. I like how faith was incorporated into the story. It is present and the point is made without it being preachy. Prayer and the importance of listening for God’s voice are items I gleamed from the story. An Unlikely Match is one of those stories that you do not want to end. I am eager for the next book in The Amish Inn Novels. An Unlikely Match is a delightful Amish tale with septuagenarian matchmakers, a grumpy Gus, an energetic Rose, rain galore, clamorous generators, and mouthwatering meals.

This book reminds of why I love Amish romance. This lovely story shows the best of an Amish life. There’s a certain innocence in that lifestyle. Their reliance on the Lord must bring a peace that most don’t experience. It helps me grow my personal spiritual life. Love Ester and Lizzy, and Cantankerous Guss. The narrator added greatly to my enjoyment. Happy reading and listening!

On my return to the Peony Inn in Montgomery, Indiana, I was delighted to reunite with Amish matchmakers Lizzie and Esther and their friend Grumpy Gus and to meet their new guests from Hollywood! This story of family, friendship, fears, and faith is engaging and heartwarming. The well-structured plot flows at a steady pace and kept my attention from beginning to end. The characters are lovable and realistic. Jayce Clarkson and Evelyn Schrock are from different worlds, but are they really so different? Their love is slow building and sweet. The strong faith element is inspiring. I look forward to Book 3 in the series to read Rose’s story and hopefully see how Esther and Gus’s relationship further unfolds.

We're back at the Peony Inn, with matchmakers Esther and Lizzie as they welcome a new set of quests to the inn. This time, they are serving an entire movie production crew her to film in the caverns. One of those crew members is a young man struggling to find his path in the world despite having grown up in the lap of luxury. As he randomly befriends a local Amish lady, sparks start to fly despite them trying to keep things casual.
Esther and Lizzie want so despirately to step in, but can they face the facts that he will return to LA and she will never leave her home?
I really loved this book and honestly liked it better than the first in the series. I liked that we saw a different side of Gus and even learned a little of his back story.
I highly recommend this book and think it should be a must read on any Amish lovers TBR list. I would rate it a higher star rating, but alas it only goes to 5 starts.

I haven't read Amish fiction for a long time and now I'm not sure why I haven't. I like seeing cultures clash and seeing things from a different perspective. It made me laugh when Esther realized her sister booked in a Production company instead of a Produce company. It was fun watching Jayce (from Hollywood) and Evelyn (an Amish woman) become friends. I love witty banter and they didn't disappoint. Even the feud between Gus and Lizzie was entertaining.

There were some poignant moments and a good reminder to listen for God's voice. "Sometimes His words are subtle, but the more time you spend in tune with Him, the easier it becomes to hear His wisdom" (location 2450).

I'm curious to see what happens between Gus & Esther and to find out what Lizzie has in store for Rose. I'll definitely check out the next book in the series and will go back and read the first one. Thank you to Zondervan for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

What a treat to return to The Peony Inn! Lizzie and Esther just crack me up. Their relationship with each other, as well as with Gus, make me laugh out loud. I especially enjoyed Jayce and Evelyn's journey to find each other. The juxtaposition of Amish life and Hollywood certainly highlighted the wide range of differences in cultures in our country. It would be interesting to discuss the similarities and differences with others. I can't wait for the next installment in this series.

Adorable elderly Amish innkeepers Esther and Lizzie are back in this heartwarming romance of forbidden love as a movie set rolls into their small Amish community.

Evelyn doesn't want to settle in love, and she is intrigued by Jayce Clarkson who is working hard to make his own way while putting in his time with his father's production company. I liked their easy friendship, and Jayce is a thoughtful man with dreams of his own, and I loved how he get's on well with Lizzie and Esther.

I like that this series follows the sisters Lizzie and Esther, one of my favorite parts of the story is the friendship between Esther and Gus, and I was so happy to see it continued from the previous book. Rose is a hardworking, well meaning young woman, and I couldn't help but admire her determination and industry.

Overall, a charming Amish romance, with wonderful engaging characters, a fun plot, faith and family.

Beth Wiseman is a master storyteller, as once again proven in her newest book, "An Unlikely Match", Book Two in "The Amish Inn Series", taking place at The Peony Inn in Indiana. This novel is classed as Amish Fiction, however it is far from the norm for this genre! The Amish meet Hollywood.... just how different is that!! If you are looking for just the regular Amish genre of girl meets boy then this book is not for you!

Beth has used her unique talent of including the most unexpected events and subjects in a way that captures the reader’s interest and makes you at once become part of the characters’ lives! All of the characters are descibed so vividly and realistically that you easily identify with them. This author has a special talent in adding humour in her stories with the many unusual, quirky personalities . I have to say that I loved both Esther and Lizzie, who took the problems of the world in their rather inept hands.

The plot moved quickly with many twists and turns, keeping the reader totally engaged. How can an Amish girl be so attracted to a handsome, rich Englischer? Would it ever work?? Can Lizzie and Esther influence the final decision??

This book is one that I will be rereading again and again. Definitely a five star book!!

This book was supplied by NetGalley. The opinions and thoughts expressed are honest and my own.

Beth Wiseman does an excellent job of mixing cultures and making it work for an interesting and can’t stop reading story. I was thrilled to revisit The Peony Inn and the fussy sisters Lizzie and Esther. They literally crack me up and when you throw Gus into the mix you have great entertainment value. It was great to delve more into Gus and his background story to understand why he is so grumpy. Add in a production company and Hollywood personalities and you have a clash of cultures but a sweet love story in the making. Jayce is complex and trying to fit into a mold his father has created for him while he longs for a simple lifestyle. You have to root for him and Evelyn and a relationship that seems impossible except for their commonality of faith. I recommend reading book one so you understand the sisters and Gus relationship although it isn’t necessary to enjoy the story, but who would want to miss out on such a great series. I highly recommend moving this to your must read pile for the summer.

God did that with a little help from the sisters
How about some progress for Gus and Esther while we are at it? Jace and Evelyn are polar opposites. He is the son of a movie producer, she is an Amish Farm Girl. But I would venture to say it was love at first site but it took a while to overcome obstacles like she can't see a non Amish man in a romantic setting. Trouble is Jace is already half way gone to Evelyn when he arrives with his father. He clearly doesn't want this life and is working his way out of it. So enter Lizzy and Evelyn of the Amish Inn to meddle a little and push a lot. Wonderful story with a great story book ending.

An Unlikely Match is a wonderful addition to The Amish Inn series written by Beth Wiseman. This story is wound with amazing characters, a great tale of how opposites attract, and overcoming fears. The author takes us back to the Peony Inn run by self affirmed matchmakers Esther and Lizzie. These two elderly sisters find joy in placing unlikely couples together and this time their job is cut out for them. Becoming attached to Jayce Clarkson, who is at the inn with a movie crew, may not be the best thing they have done. When Evelyn Schrock accidently meets Jayce she is smitten right away. Knowing their is no future for an Amish girl and an Englished Evelyn tries to keep her feelings in tacked. But the heart wants what the heart wants. Mean while grumpy old Gus doesn't hesitate to reappear within the story and Lizzie and Esther are still trying to figure out the mystery as to why their mother promised him a place to live for the rest of his life. When that secret is revealed everything becomes very clear. This story is full of forgiveness, love, faith, and unlikely endings.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

I was so excited to revisit The Peony Inn which is run by the elderly widowed sisters Esther and Lizzie. Will they once again be back to their matchmaking?

A film crew takes up residence inside the inn and outside of it in motor homes. Jayce is the son of the filmmaker and they have a strained relationship. Evelyn is a young Amish girl who befriends Jayce, but can there be anything more there?

I love the character of Gus. He is a cantankerous elderly neighbor of the inn but i enjoyed how his true personality came through.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

This series is so much fun to read and the characters seem like family now. I adore Esther and Lizzie so much. These two women are full of life and make me laugh. Their schemes to matchmake always gives readers an adventure to read. Wouldn’t it be nice to stay at their Inn?

I loved the plot of this story where a production crew overtakes the Inn and surrounding land. Someone made a mistake when they accepted the booking. Oh I laughed so hard when the motor homes pull up with limos following close behind. The noise of the generators are enough to make you run away. The author does an incredible job of letting us see two characters try to understand each other’s beliefs.

Evelyn is a sweet quiet and hard working young woman. She has deep faith and her actions show how much she respects her heritage. The Amish have always fascinated me and this story talked about the differences between the Amish beliefs and other beliefs.

Jayce is here with his father to help with the movie but their relationship is strained. His father is very stern and doesn’t seem to want to spend any time repairing his relationship with Jayce. I liked how Evelyn and Jayce became friends. I enjoyed reading how Jayce and Evelyn began to have feelings for each other but Evelyn is not sure she should let her feelings grow for him. They come from different backgrounds and have very deep conversations about God. I thought it was very interesting for them to question each other about what they believed in. There are many religions in the world so I think Jayce was a little confused why Evelyn believed one way when he was never taught that. This part of the story was well written and answered sone questions I have had about the Amish ways.

I cannot leave out my favorite character Gus. He is gruff, standoffish and a loner. I do think he may have a crush on one of the sisters who runs the Inn. I hope this gets more attention in the next book. His unhappiness is explained in the story and I wanted to give him a big hug. All these years he has been sad and now I know why. Don’t miss the excitement when Gus gets a part in the movie. There is a nice surprise about him that will have you respecting him even more.

I loved this story so much because it shows how two people who are different are willing to listen to each other and follow their heart. Life is too short and they need to live each day in happiness. God is very important to both Evelyn and Jayce. The importance of prayer in the story is prevalent as they each seek God’s wisdom for their future. There is reconciliation, forgiveness and new beginnings that fill the pages of this inspiring story.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Zondervan Publishing. The review is my own opinion.

4.5 stars.

An Unlikely Match by Beth Wiseman is a very charming Amish romance. Although this newest release is the second installment in The Amish Inn Novels series, it can be read as a standalone.

Lizzie and Esther’s latest guests at The Peony Inn are from Hollywood. The large group  includes the producer, Brandon Clarkson, and his adult son, Jayce. Their relationship is tense due to Brandon’s constant berating of his son. Jayce has been in and out of trouble, but he no longer wants anything to do with the Hollywood lifestyle. He has a strong faith but he is struggling to find a church that feels like the right fit.  After the movie is finished, his father will pay him enough money for him to begin his life from underneath Brandon’s thumb. After meeting Evelyn Schrock, Jayce is beginning to envision a future that is very different from the life he currently lives. But Evelyn is Amish and has no intention of leaving the area or her Amish life. Will Jayce leave behind the worldly trappings and become Amish?

Evelyn is an upbeat young woman with an inquisitive mind. She has dated some but she has not yet fallen in love. Although he is not Amish, Evelyn is quite drawn to Jayce. They grow close as they enjoy chaste dates and their feelings continue to grow. Evelyn is surprised when their discussions turn to God and she is pleased to discover Jayce’s faith. Both are heartbroken when it is time for Jayce to return to California. Is their budding romance strong enough to weather their separation?

Lizzie and Esther have yet to replace their previous employee and they are exhausted caring for their guests. They are also both shocked when their testy tenant, Gus Owens, is offered a role in the movie. They are also taken aback to learn that Gus and Jayce share a friendship of sorts. The sisters have long wondered why their mamm insisted that Gus could live on the property as long he wishes. Does the answer to this question lie within a startling discovery? Will the changes in Gus continue once the guests have returned home?

An Unlikely Match is a wonderful Amish romance of faith, love and new beginnings. Evelyn and Jayce are marvelous characters who are a very cute couple.  The romance between Evelyn and Jayce is an absolute joy to watch unfold. Despite their divergent backgrounds, their faith draws them together. With an unanticipated plot twist, Beth Wiseman brings this beautiful romance to a touching conclusion. Old and new fans are going to love this latest addition to The Amish Inn Novels series.

I loved this story, and reading about characters from the previous book. There's grumpy 'ole Gus, Lizzie, who still misplaces her dentures, Esther. Lizzie and Esther still run the Peony Inn, and still are in the matchmaking business.
Do not pass this story by if you haven't read the first one in this series. You won't feel like part of it is missing. It's great as a stand alone, but I suspect you'll want to, also read the first one.
Evelyn, is still officially in her rumspringa, but she knows without a doubt that she loves the Amish life and faith. She hasn't found a man she's willing to commit to, so far.
LIzzie made a mistake when she rented out rooms, and then these motor homes pull in, along with fancy cars. Esther is in a panic about what to do with all these people and what to feed them, as there are so many more than expected. It seems Lizzie told them they could park their motor homes on the property. Well, those motor homes with their big, loud generators running are a problem for grumpy Gus.
These people are there to film a movie and will be there a few weeks.
Jayce is the director's son who has a bad relationship with his father, and is only there to make the money so he can move out of his dad's place after the film and not be dependent on him anymore.
Jayce and Evelyn meet and become friends. Her mother cautions her that friends is all they can ever be, and there will be pain when he inevitably has to leave for Los Angeles and his life there, if she lets the friendship go further.
Both Jayce and Evelyn have fears, which they work together to overcome.
You'll love all the characters, even grumpy 'ole Gus!
This was such a delightful story with a happy ending!

This was such a lovely surprise!

Ok, 1) roughly 20% of these kinds of books are about food, and as a very food motivated person I lust after these wonderful family (in this case inn) meals.

2) this book... wow, I didn’t realize how much I needed a good character driven story, and I am not just talking about the main characters, smaller side characters you don’t think much about at first also get their time to shine. More than romantic relationships gets time to grow and evolve and I am here for it. Gus especially, and I did not see it coming.

I love the time this book spends on conversations and making characters try to relate to each other, but also especially how it doesn’t shy away from reality, i.e. nothing feels “unreal” or too speedy really, as is sometimes common in the genre. It felt organic and true to all characters.

There was a series of lovely quotes, but I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone else, all I’ll share is “Cling to your convictions, but allow room for change and growth. Be the person you want to be, and never forget that anything is possible.”

All I can say is that if you want a romance that allows for genuine complications, a variety of interpersonal relationships, and character growth, this might be for you.

I, meanwhile, will wait for Rose’s story, I found her wonderfully charming and can’t wait to see her as a lead. However I’ll admit that I may just be ready for a few more rounds of Lizzie and Gus, this grump off dynamic must continue!

Beth Wiseman writes beautifully and takes her time, this is a good thing. Thank you to NetGalley and Zondervan for this ARC, I’m excited to see this in print.

I have enjoyed this series and the quirky characters that visit the Amish Inn. The sisters that own the inn and their long life tenant Gus, they all add spunk to the Amish life. The sisters Lizzie and Esther are hosting a Hollywood Production team and of course there is so much chaos. However, in short time there becomes rhythm of sanity. The son of the producer Jayce Clarkson is a young man that is conflicted. His relationship with his father is strained. Always having to prove himself and his lifestyle is not satisfying. He has entered in a relationship with God and longs for the simpler peaceful life. When he meets Evelyn Schrock, he is struck by her beauty and simplicity. They both know that nothing more can come out of friendship and they both are willing to take their chances.

Of course their friendship develops into something more because they find something in each other that is lacking. They develop more of bond when they face their fears and also what living in simplicity means.

What I liked about this romance of friendship was Gus. The cranky old man that has been a secondary character in all the Amish Inn books. You finally get to know more about him and his relationship to the sisters. The sisters had made a promise to their mother to look after Gus but not knowing why. That is what this romance/life book is centered around- understanding others makes room to love them. It is a faith driven to do so because it values others more than yourself.

I can't wait for the next one.

A special thank you to Zondervan and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Once again, Beth Wiseman proves why she is one of the best Inspirational Amish fiction writers that there is. I read my first book by her a couple of years ago and then gobbled them all up as quick as I can. Now I wait excitedly for each new release. And, as usual, An Unlikely Match did not disappoint. Book two in the Amish Inn series brings us back to the Peony Inn where Esther and Lizzie are providing food and comfort for their guests, along with a little matchmaking. This time, though, the matchmaking may not be a good idea. The newest guests at the inn are all part of a big movie production that is happening. One of them, Jayce, just wants out of the industry, but since his dad is the producer, he is on board to help out and then hopefully leave the business for good. Evelyn is an Amish young lady who meets Jayce on the road when her horse is hurt and is instantly charmed by his good looks and his kindness to her horse. What follows is a whirlwind romance that is bound to end in heartache, as Jayce only has one month to be at the inn before he heads back to LA. However, with Lizzie, Esther, and God, anything is possible. I love how this book explored themes of redemption, trust, and faith. I love that I laughed out loud and cried a little too. I love that we get to see the characters again soon in another book in the series. Thank you again to #BethWiseman and #NetGalley for sharing your heart and your stories with us. #Bookstagram #all_the_pages

Boy, is this title ever an understatement! An Unlikely Match brings together an Amish woman, Evelyn Schrock, and an English young man, Jayce Clarkson, whose father is a Hollywood movie producer. The movie crew is staying at the Peony Inn, owned by sisters Esther and Lizzie who are known all over the area for their matchmaking. The sisters see the attraction between Evelyn and Jayce, but knowing the lifestyle he has lived, they know better than to encourage a relationship. Or, at least, Esther does. Lizzie comes across as a bit of a ditz, who can't keep her teeth in her mouth let alone keep from meddling in Evelyn's love life.

Jayce is fascinated by the slow, gentle pace of Amish life. He never realized how much he has craved a change until he came to Amish country. Yes, he has faith in God - something his father has never encouraged, but then, when has his father ever encouraged him about anything? Could he find the peace he's been searching for in this place, and in this faith?

Talk about unlikely! It seems more like an impossible match, but then, God is in the business of making impossible things happen. There is, as always, a lot of humor in these stories - most from Esther and Lizzie's antics. Jayce's story is heart-rending, but his faith carries him through some pretty deep waters. I have enjoyed all three books in this series - this is book 2 - and would recommend reading them in order.

I have enjoyed reading Beth Wiseman for years and her latest book " An  Unlikely Match", does not disappoint.  She does an outstanding job making her characters come to life and endearing to your heart.  This book is the second installment to her Amish Inn series.  You may want to read book one beforehand so you can be better acquainted with Lizzie, Esther, and their grumpy old friend/neighbor/man, Gus.  However, it isn't a must.
The setting for this book is in Montgomery, Ohio at The Peony Inn, which is run by sisters Lizzie and Esther, the infamous matchmakers.  The story revolves around Jayce, an Englisher, and Evelyn, a young Amish woman.  Jayce is the son of a Hollywood movie director that has come to Ohio to shoot for a movie and they are lodging at the Peony Inn, with the entire film crew.   This story of family, friends, faith, struggles, is page-turning entertainment.   There were so many fun elements to this read, it was easy and plain fun.  I found myself getting tickled several times during this read laughing out loud.   I didn't want the story to end.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Not the typical Amish novel

I’m reading these books and although they are interesting, the idea that someone like Jayce will convert to the faith is not realistic. I don’t understand why for once someone in these books doesn’t actually leaves the cult and is happy. Yes, I said cult. A religious group that denies education, insists on strict adherence to the leader, threatens to shun anyone who leaves, insists on controlling the adherents environment, dress, social circle and individuality is a cult. The insistence on women having to marry while still in their teens, the refusal to use birth control, and the teachings that they are only permitted to be wives and mothers is cultic and harmful. Yes, the young people are permitted a time of running around, but with only an eighth grade education, no Social Security card and no experience in the world, of course the majority of them join the cult. They are completely unprepared for normal life.

My main problem with this series is the character of Lizzie is totally unlikeable. I hope she becomes more tolerable in the third book.
