Moonstone Bay #8

Rate this book
Hadley Hunter thought she was getting a grip on the paranormal world she never knew existed until recently. She was wrong. In the shadow of a massive shifter retreat, she finds she knew absolutely nothing.
Her live-in love Galen Blackwood has his hands full with the conference. Not only is his mother pressuring him to make his presence known but it’s also up to him to keep the not-so-friendly factions from going to war. Things only get stickier when a member of the Michigan wolf contingent ends up dead on the docks.
Hadley wants to help Galen, as does his cousin Aric Winters, who has brought his magical mage wife Zoe and their daughter to the island at the behest of his father. Aric prefers distance when it comes to shifter politics but he’s happy to see his cousin, and be introduced to Hadley for the first time.
Because they’re not shifters, Hadley and Zoe are considered outsiders. That allows them to join together to track down a murderer.
Hadley is out of her element but she’s determined to help Galen by any means necessary. Unfortunately for her, the other wolves don’t like it … and decide to make it an issue worth dying for.
A wolf war is brewing and Hadley is at the center of it. Not only that but she’s a target. It’s going to take all of her witchy energy – plus a little help from a new friend – to make it through to the other side.
Somebody else has different plans … and they’re deadly. It might be the wolves warring, but Hadley is the one who might die on the battlefield.

Absolutely Wonderful! Deserves 10 Stars!

When Zoe, Aric, & Sami Winters descend on Moonstone Bay for a shifter retreat there is lots of danger, lots of action, lots of excitement, & most importantly heaps of laughs. I truly enjoy these crossover stories. I never tire of revisiting with the Winters family. I love the way Hadley & Galen’s relationship is growing & strengthening. I think seeing the Winters interact with each other gives Hadley & Galen a glimpse into their own future. And I agree with Sami, I really, really, really want to meet a shark shifter - preferably a Great White. Hammerheads are just too darn creepy! Amanda M. Lee does knocks it out of the park again.

Underwhelming

I was so excited for a new Moonstone Bay book. Unfortunately, what I got was a partial convenant college book with a sprinkling of Hadley. While I absolutely love the Winters’, I wanted to read about Hadley and see her grow. But, she was a sidekick in her own book, and an extremely weak one at that. She second-guessed everything, constantly sought approval and permission from Galen, and basically allowed Zoe to steal her thunder at every turn. The climax was anti-climatic because Sami ended up sort of saving the day. Please, give Sami, (and maybe Zoe more of), her own books so that she/they can stop taking over all the other series. This was definitely one of my least favorite books.

It only takes one annoying character to ruin it 😕

Honestly, I wish I could give this a higher rating as the story was fast paced with a decent mystery and I liked most of the characters, but… yep, the dreaded but. And here it is. Sami drives me nuts. There I said it. I know she’s supposed to be the sassy chip-off-the-block mini-Zoe, but her attitude has solidified her brat character status for me. I don’t really like her as 99% of the time she can’t control either her mouth, her temper, or her magic. I don’t think she’s ever faced the consequences of her damn the torpedoes attitude and that just frustrates me no end.

Oh Yea, another crossover (said with all the snarky sarcasm I can muster!!)

Not a good story. It was another excuse to have another crossover event with another series characters. This time the Lake-Winters mage/wolf family. Boring! So once again in the crossover lines, there was the Winters family and multiple mentions of the Covenant series storylines, two instances of bringing up the Grimlocks, one for the fire elemental in the Mystic Caravan series and likely more. Again, BORING! and extremely over done. The various books from each series are listed at the back of the book, isn’t that enough to get readers to read this formulaic series.

There was very little plot development. It all was about a big shifter retreat, of various types. Though always in past series, it was said that differing shifter types didn’t like to interact with one another. Guess that changed somehow. Also I am pretty sure that in previous books, including the last book, that alligator shifters didn’t exist, or if they did, it was rarely seen or heard of. Yet now there is an entire pack of them in Florida. Plus during all the purist wolf fighting, where were the bears, ferrets, bunnies and alligators. All these other groups just ignored the race wars that were happening under their own noses.

The constant comments about wanting to meet a shark shifter is getting so old. I couldn’t even begin to count how many times it was said throughout this book, let alone previous ones. First they started out as non-existent, then it went to maybe they existed but now extinct, then now it’s they are very rare, yet Aurora has even met one in her teens, so 15-20 years prior. The joke has gotten old.

Just as the Zoe, Aric, and Sami show has gotten old. I will give the author credit for limiting the number of “She gets that from you” snark comments, but enough with so many other stupid things they each say over and over again. Are they that brain dead they can come up with new dialogue between themselves. If they can’t, no wonder they constantly complain of hating each other, I would too and likely mean it just as they do in their passive-aggressiveness.

Honestly, the snark comments are fine to a point, but there is no real substance behind anything. It’s either snark or relationship comments that don’t register as being truthful. The women all tend to be emasculating to the men and the men treat the women as possessions as well as some form of weird little girl princess fantasy. Don’t get me started on how the men treat other men or that the women are even worse with other women. It’s all vile. They need to grow up and find out how a real relationship works, whether that is for friends or for something more. They need to start treating each other, not to mention themselves, as human beings first. It difficult to understand how any of these characters found friends, let alone relationship partners. With the exception of Booker and he had his magic to force those connections, yet sadly his were still a tad healthier then the rest.

Finally, the stories need new plots and characters. Each series is a slightly modified copy of one of the others, only possibly set in a different environment. This environment variant is supposed to make you ignore the fact that the characters and plots are all just rehashed crap from the other series. This is formulaic writing at its worst. The entire purist wolf blood line takeover story was already done in the Covenant series, which was even brought up in this story. There was even the similar sub plot of someone else trying to take control away from the purists after they succeeded but then were in a weakened position, such as Kennedy and his human kids in Covenant and Natalie and Dax in this one.

Seriously, the author has no new ideas at all? Her initial books and series were pretty good, for a beginner author. These had unique plots, interesting characters and were a fun read. Now all you get is the same story redone over and over again. Then characters profiles and plots lines are reused again and again in each series.

Book 8 Moonstone Bay

Some funny and light hearted banter with new characters.

In all fairness, a review of a book is of more than just the characters, settings, etc….
It’s also a review about how the author writes. This applies to all genres of writing. (I’ll use present/past tense verbs later in review. I would hope authors read reviews and constructive criticisms as a way to better their writing. Another reason for stating this is/was to remind them/us that no one is perfect, but the goal is to do and be better writers of our works!
After all - Would you hand in writing with grammar mistakes to your Language Arts teachers knowing that they might circle all you errors in red marker and staple it to the bulletin board for all to see that pass by it on their way to the next stop?! The HORROR😢☹️😩😣. That’s right. Others see and read your writing, too.)

Lee, as the author, had done fairly well grammar wise until this book.
She also gets/got stuck on word choices.
For example, in an earlier book in the series- pragmatic, was repeatedly used. Synonym words could have been used. This book, and book seven, was “fantastical” where better word choices were needed.
Run on sentences were also noticed.
The pronoun “I” was grammatically incorrect in several sentences. NEVER use “I” in the predicate of a sentence; or “me” in the subject of a sentence. ALWAYS remember to temporarily remove the other person in the sentence if you are/were not sure which pronoun to correctly use or just use the grammar rules you were taught in third grade and up.

Oops! Amanda M. Lee, there was some good writing in the eight books read so far, but what happened with this one? All the characters, settings, actions, etc… will be less interesting for some readers who struggle with certain parts of the writing process.

Exceptionally entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

This is an exceptionally entertaining and fun filled supernatural cozy mystery series. A fantastic cast of characters with an intriguing and entertaining storyline. Hadley inherited a lighthouse on a tropical island summer off the coast of the United States. Is a tropical island inhabited the most part by supernaturals a mini different kinds. It is a paranormal get away and vacation spot for Paranormal‘s. Hadley did not know until she arrived on the island that her grandmother was a witch and in fact so is she. Her powers begin manifesting once she reached The island. She soon fell for the local sheriff and is beginning a new life in her new home. As a new witch in town and being a that was described by her boyfriend busybody. She always gets entangled in murders and other crimes and their investigations. Along with a few of her new friends in cohorts they solve the crimes or in some cases they must battle evil to save their island or on occasion even the world. This author has many different series set in this world. On occasion many of them will cross over into each others stories. One of those other stories happens to cross over into this particular story and is extraordinarily entertaining. Read on and find out what happens.

Shifters retreat..

As the shifters start arriving on the island for their big retreat Galen discovers the body of a wolf shifter down by the docks. With its throat ripped out its clear that they have some kind of shifter attacking others but with all the shifter communities gathering it's not necessarily a given its another wolf. What's more is who has been killed.. Norman Dixon was the son of one of the pack leaders and Galen is going to have his work cut out for him with his mother Margery on his case as one of the welcome committee.

When Aric, Zoe and Sami arrive, reluctant participants in the retreat, they very quickly meet up with Galen, cousins and in similar situations with their families over bloodlines and purity, as Hadley is just learning about wolf politics Zoe and Sami and she bonds quickly with the mage and her even more powerful offspring which is a good thing because the attacks start pretty much immediately.

With the body count piling up after the women defend themselves and none of the packs enquiring about missing members it's clear something is going on but even though they are heavily outnumbered, despite support from Booker, Lilac and Aurora, can they take down the purists and end this once and for all?

A not to be missed crossover, Lee draws you in and keeps you fervently reading to the last page.

My favorite Moonstone Bay book by far. I loved this crossover with the Covenant series main characters and references to other series she also writes. There was action, laughter, snarkiness, fun and yet also an issue that speaks to parallels in our society and acceptance of differences making everyone better. All accomplished without being at all preachy, just humorous and treating people with respect for their unique abilities and personalities. I rarely reread books much less immediately but this one I did, despite a large tbr list, because I devoured it and reread to catch more details. You don't need to have read her other series to really enjoy this, you won't feel left out, but it definitely adds another layer to the story. I love that aspect actually, that nobody will feel left out if they haven't read the others yet. Using the daughter Sami to teach how acceptance of all is a strength and helping others brings its own rewards was a masterstroke. You will also enjoy just surface reading it for the funny families and events even without looking for anything deeper. This is a book that could easily be a vacation beach read and just as easily be the subject of a paper or article for a class about layering meaning and acceptance.

Sami Winters strikes again

Sami Winters is one of my favourite character. Her parents Zoe Lake and Aric Winters met, fell in love, married and had Sami in the Covenant College series ( by the same author). Sami is now fourteen and a a far from typical teenager, first off she’s a being of immense magical ability, half mage and half wolf shifter, second she’s been raised by her parents to be independent, strong and decisive. Especially when in a fight, you see, there’s a lot of factions in the magical community who don’t believe Sami should be allowed to exist and work towards her death. So to this book, Hadley and Galen are preparing for a convention of all the wolf packs in America, a convention which the Winters family have agreed to attend. Hadley and the Winters family meet their first day on the island and immediately hit it off, they are enjoying spending time together and seeing the Island when they are set on by a pack of wolf shifters. Turns out someone has decided the Island would be a good place to deal with the troublesome Winters family once and for all.

Definitely one of my favourite series!!!

This book is in a series of escapist fair I read to relax and distract my mind from the serious stuff I otherwise read. As such my requirements are simple: fun, likeable characters that don't take themselves too seriously, a story line that's not too deep and a mystery I can ponder without too much thought, and a romantic relationship that's not fraught with tension or too much reality. But it has to be grounded in this world so I can relate. Moonstone Bay is the type of place I would like to visit and hangout. Galen the werewolf sheriff/ love interest of the central character Hadley Hunter, who is a witch just learning her craft, and the paranormal characters that surround them straddle the line between serious and fanciful. Light reading it is, so I don't pick too many nits with it. Amanda Lee's style and imagination help cap the days with an hour of delightful humor and excitement. I can't ask for more.

Like many other Lee fans I also like when characters from other series intermingle. In this one we had Aric, Zoe, and Sami Winters from Michigan who are cousins to Galen (from the Living Covenant series).

Once again (like in the Covenant series), there was a battle between the shifters. Hadley and her motley crew fought to the death.

Lilac and Booker admit they want to be more than friends. Hadley and Galen admit they are freaked out about having kids of their own…until a few years have passed.

Next book is The Joy of Hex (A Moonstone Bay Cozy Mystery Book 9), however, it won’t be released until 01/04/22.

Soooo…for my next book I am going to read “Jackets, Jack-O-Lantern, & Justice (A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery Book 22)” by Tonya Kappes (yes, I have read and reviewed the previous 21 books in this series)

Not my favorite in the series

This book has crossover with Zoe, Aric and Sami visiting the island. Time is fairly equally split between Hadley and Zoe. I usually like the crossovers, but this one really focused more on the Winters. Hadley was not really effective in battle and Zoe took center stage. The storyline was more about wolf politics and extremists. Galen and Hadley have discussions about their future, but no forward momentum in the Moonstone Bay story. Lilac and Booker had a change in this one but it was more filler. I really felt this was more of a Zoe book. I looked forward to this release and I'm a little disappointed in this story's focus. Not my favorite in this series by far. 2.5 stars

A favorite of the series

I loved this book. It had so much snark with Zoe, Sami and Hadley, I was laughing hysterically thru it. The way Ms Lee writes her female characters is inspiring. They are strong, snarky and powerful. What more could you ask for? She then layers in tons of action so descriptive you feel like you are on the front lines. I love all of her characters in all of the Amanda M Lee series and I have read them, but my favorite are Zoe, Sami and Eric. I am so happy you write a about them. My wish is a book where all of your strong women characters have a female get together. Awesome book you will not be able to put it down.

I love crossovers

I enjoyed seeing Winters ,although I still find Zoe's mouth annoying. Clearly Hadley is overdue to work on her training. They left many mysteries open from seers to shark shifters to poseable popsicles. I expect to see more of Kelly and the resort and the FAR in future books. The wolf political analogy was a bit heavy-handed, (Donald? Really?) But it's soothing to think blood purists are only 10% not 40 or more. At least in fiction a story can be told where there's a conclusion,if not a happy ending.

The Winters arrive

Zoe Lake meet Hadley. When a shifter retreat arrives on the island you know that mayhem is bound to follow.
Aric and Galen are related and Galen as the younger cousin looks up to Aric and the way that he has committed to his life with Zoe, even if she isn’t a wolf. As always the relationships between non-wolves and wolves is bound to cause a problem. Sami and Zoe bring their particular brand of snark. Do we also get to learn more about the developing relationship between Lilac and Booker ….. possibly!

I love the snarkiness of Amanda Lee's characters. The story lines/ideas are just out-of-this-world! However, I wish she take the constant sexual needs down a notch and stop making every male character so rigid when their partner gets into some type of trouble. I hate the guys saying "You're grounded", "I'm angry 'cause you got in troubles way", etc... I mean, come on, these girls are bad-ass characters who can take care of themselves. Please let's get the guys to stop complaining and instead start celebrating their women; it is, after all, 2021!

PHENOMENAL!

I’ve loved this series from the first book. I adore Galen and Hadley! They are the perfect couple. They balance each other and aren’t smoltzy. It’s refreshing. Booker, Lilac and Aurora round out this list of characters and each add their own little flair. And THEN Zoe, Aric and Sami are added to this mix and you get PHENOMENAL!

Each story in the Moonstone Bay series is original, unique and very well plotted out. I hope this series has a super long run!

As usual, Amanda M Lee wrote another great book. I actually paused another book I was in the middle of reading as soon as I found out she came out with her latest one. So far I’ve loved all of them (Wicked Witches with Aunt Tillie is still my favorite series of hers), and am really enjoying the cross-series thing she has going on in some of her books. It’s like having one set of friends meet the other! That’s the feeling it gives me. I can barely wait for the next one!

Excellent Story in a Good Series

Hadley and Galen have to solve the murder of a werewolf when the werewolf retreat is held on Moonstone Bay. Joining then are Aric Winters, Galen’s cousin and his wife Zoe and daughter Sami. Together try to unravel the mystery behind the murder and other events that are going on. The book is well written, with plenty of snarky remarks. There is plenty of excitement and intrigue. I enjoyed reading this book very much.

Excellent

Of course any time Sami, Zoe, and Aric is involved , you are going to have a fun read. This was no exception. Still a good amount of Hadley and Galin, though a little less of some of the others. Lilac has a great experience with Sami. Twisty mystery and the whole book was entertaining. I recommend this book and series. All books by this author and her Lily Harper Hart pen name are worth reading.

Ruining Moonstone Bay

When is it ever right for a 14 year old to discuss her "Girl Parts" in the company of grown men? Or to treat grown men as sex objects. I tried to ignore it in the traveling Circus series. But its Never appropriate for a 14 year old to behave this way. Just because this child is powerful doesn't mean, that she should be encouraged to talk and act as she does. Children are not sex objects. Won't be buying anymore from this Author.

Funny, good plot, great characters

I always enjoy this author's stories, especially her characters. The mysteries are always interesting and meets my one criteria of happy endings. My only regret for this series is that I want books about the main characters' evolving lives and relationships and in the crossovers I feel cheated because the books are more about the visiting characters than the main characters.

WOW

One of the best crossovers sofar, I really missed Eric and Zoe, but love their crossovers sofar. Sami is growing so fast so that means she gets her own series in maybe High School right? Well this family be in the showdown with the Winchester Witch? Now that would be amazing and great closer or all invovled. These authors are fantastic writers of their genre and haven't disappointed yet, I look forward to more great stories until it's conclusion.😈😈😇😇

Paranormal fantasy

I like Amanda Lee's humor and am enjoying the visits to Moonstone Bay by her other series characters. Galen and Hadley keep growing as a couple and Lilac and Booker come to a resolution about their relationship. In this book a shifter retreat is being held on the island but some of the wolf shifters have come with a hidden agenda that includes murder and mayhem.

Not the best

I am really enjoying this series, but this wasn’t the best effort. There were continuity issues (in previous books Galen specifically said there were no alligator shifters and Hadley did see a shark-shifter). Sami was an extremely annoying teenager and I really didn’t enjoy Hadley being shoved in the background. There wasn’t even an explanation as to what a Mage even is.

Shifter Retreat

This is an exciting addition to the series. Adding the Winter family to the Moonstone Bay residents made for an enjoyable read. The plot and subplots move quickly, making it hard to put the book book down. Hadley has grown in her magic, but has a ways
To go. I can’t wait for the next book!
