Alex King #12

Hunter Killer

Rate this book
It had been a well-orchestrated defection when King put a Russian bio-weapons scientist on a British submarine under heavy gunfire. But he should have checked. Should have checked that the asset wasn’t contaminated. Tragically infected with the biological agent she was smuggling to the West, King has been burdened not only by her fate, but of the one hundred and eighteen men onboard the submarine when it disappeared.

Aurora is the world’s foremost green energy pioneer and operate an R&D facility onboard a ring of former oil rigs anchored in the Barents Sea. Now a UNESCO green sanctuary, no military presence is permitted within an area the size of France. Aurora has discovered the sunken British submarine and a neutral consortium has been contracted to salvage the vessel and tow it to the Faroe Islands, where the Royal Navy will take possession under the eyes of the world’s press.

With cutting-edge technology, weapons and a terrible secret on board, King is sent to defend Britain’s interests, but soon discovers foreign agents have a more deadly agenda.

Yet another tantalising thriller

If there is one benefit of the recent lockdown it is that this, the twelfth in the Alex King series, has followed on so comparatively quickly after the last, Last Man Standing. All our favourite characters are here so starting Hunter Killer felt like being back in the family or slipping on a familiar and well-worn, comfortable jacket.

The sixth Alex King thriller was Stormbound and Hunter Killer is very much a sequel. In Stormbound, King had facilitated the defection of a Russian scientist. After a difficult journey, he has been able to transfer her to a Royal Navy submarine and thought his job was done but it was not to be. The submarine disappeared and the Russian scientist is infected with a killer disease. King’s job in Hunter Killer is to oversee the operation after the missing sub had been found and deal with the consequences. However, others also share his interest and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

As usual, Bateman’s writing is realistic and highly detailed to the point of being informative, especially when it comes to weaponry. This detail adds to the credibility of the plot and the pleasure of the reader who immediately senses that the author knows his stuff. There are subplots galore that add to the interest and although we always know that King will triumph there’s plenty of tension which adds a seed of doubt – will he be able to pull it off this time?

Although this might be the twelfth in the series it can be read as a stand-alone novel as the characters are as well developed in this as in The Contract Man which is the first of the Alex King stories. Many authors churn out a series almost as cash cows once they have found a popular character and developed a following. Bateman stands apart from this crowd and has the talent to maintain the freshness needed to retain the reader’s interest. I am addicted to the characters and look forward to the next.

Hunter kills

I've just watched Vigil in the BBC and it was interesting to see inside a UK Nuclear sub while reading about subs in this
story. I enjoyed the two separate plot lines births was a little rushed in places, this sub text with the CIA agent is being but clumsy in this story . Still, an enjoyable read.

Thriller a minute

Caroline and Alex face daunting odds on separate missions. We see how far Caroline will go to right a wrong. Alex is his usual, at all costs, self doing everything and more to complete his mission. A great quick read.

Another great thriller...but

Sadly, it seems this Arctic thriller "gave birth" to another story plot just as it was getting going. Normally, like with a sandwich, more is better. But not here. Tell the lead story. Then add the second one as a bonus feature?

Interesting read

There is an interesting mingling of plot lines that each involve characters from the previous installments of the series. The central protagonists seem to be moving even more to the edge of the establishment setting. I wonder where this might lead

Hunter Killer

A good spy novel.
King is tasked with blowing up a British sub lying on the sea bed.
The crew are presumed dead and MI5 cannot risk enemies getting the technology.
However spies and submarines from their enemies are also in play.

Alex King is up there with Jack Reacher as a ruthless but totally believable hero. Realistic narrative and satisfying outcomes have led me through all 12 of these novels. Highly recommended.
