The Inclusive Mindset: How to Cultivate Diversity in Your Everyday Life

Rate this book
Diversity and Inclusion doesn't have to be hard, complicated, and full of shame/guilt to be effective in our lives!  What if we are inspired to focus on how to have meaningful progress instead of focusing on the things we are not doing well?  In Justin’s decade-plus Human Resources work with clients from the Fortune 500 to fourth graders, he has learned that another approach to this critical conversation allows the reader not to be condemned but committed to real growth.  This book is for Human Resources and the everyday person who wants to build real relationships with others (including those who are different).   Diversity and Inclusion is not just something you have to do, but rather who you chose to be!  In this book, Justin takes a vulnerable approach to tackle tough topics in compassionate ways, all while inspiring deep reflection.  If you want to learn, grow, and make meaningful change, this book is for you no matter where you are on the journey.  Walk with Justin as he gets to the heart of the conversation with his relevant stories, practical examples, and helpful strategies to make diversity and inclusion a part of our everyday lives! To be clear, diversity and inclusion is not a hand-holding exercise where we will always agree.  Rather, it is when we can disagree yet still respect each other.   It is when we can vehemently disagree with others' ideology and yet still passionately pursue their HUMANITY!  Everyone is invited to this conversation.  Learn the practical strategies and suggestions (here are a few covered in the book):
While there are many approaches to diversity and inclusion, Justin provides a conversational approach where he often shares his own mishaps and need for improvement (there are A LOT).  Take this personal journey with Justin as he invites you to embrace The Inclusive Mindset.   Here are a few thoughts from everyday people who were beta   Marcey Rader (Productivity Author and Coach): “I am reading Justin Jones-Fosu's book The Inclusive Mindset as a beta reader right now, and folks...you are in for a treat! I've read four books in the last year to get me out of ignorant mode, and this, by far, is the best one to reach a wide audience of all flavors. I laughed out loud three times in the first 82 pages and have already recited three stories to my husband.” Linsey Chamberlain (Executive Specialist – Administration): “This book focuses on diversity and inclusion as an over-arching concept and doesn’t just focus on one segment (race, gender, etc.) like most books tend to do. This book is easy to understand, has a good flow, and is easy to digest and retain. I’ve read books in the past with good information and content. Still, as a reader, I would feel somewhat attacked (even if I agreed with the content, I would instinctually become defensive with the delivery). This book is full of grace and convictions, not condemnations. Justin said it ‘Having privilege is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s all about what you do with it.’”

The Inclusive Mindset is a must have addition for any educator. Our classrooms are a microcosm of American society and it is imperative for educators to equip themselves to empower students and inspire change. Justin breaks the “diversity, equity, and inclusion” conversation into bit-sized, relatable chunks that allow us to better understand our own biases and how to strive towards making our classrooms and the world a better place.

Yes, yes, yes! Perfect timing and impactful messages. That’s the truth about The Inclusive Mindset. While certainly the hottest topic of our time, Justin Jones-Fosu offers a fresh and compassionate perspective on the challenging topic of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

One of my biggest takeaways is the challenge he offers leaders wanting to expand the diversity and inclusion in their business by asking them, “How diverse and inclusive is your life?” Profound and compelling … this invitation for leaders and people to intentional expand their life experience by consciously expanding the diversity of their circles. In contrast to the unconscious biases explored by Justin, he encourages us to not only become more aware of our unconscious biases but to also more consciously diversify our personal lives, circles and relationships.

Three of my big takeaways are: 1. Embracing curiosity, openness, dignity and respect in my interpersonal relationships; 2. Standing up and speaking out for the others especially when they’re not present; and 3. Taking personal responsibility for my impact irrespective of my intent. I’m also grateful that The Inclusive Mindset offers such a simple and comprehensive discussion of privilege (aka luxuries) – specifically, what they are (and mean) and what they aren’t (and don’t mean) – as well as clarifying the role of power and oppression.

Finally, the moving walkway analogy is one of the most impactful mindsets I’ve ever seen to help explain the isms but more importantly empower me to be a part of changing them. I’m personally committed to being an upstander and anti-ist (as described in the book) and The Inclusive Mindset is a fantastic foundation to support me on this often messy journey.

My deepest hope and prayer is that people will embrace the inclusive mindset, lead with curiosity, take responsibility for their biases and impacts, and nurture healthy dialogues to collectively grow our awareness, empower our courage (to stand up and speak out), and to begin the slow process of bringing down the many walls of difference that currently stand between us.

The first laugh came early on when the author was describing his hugging obsession. Humor is essential in a book that can feel heavy for some. Jones-Fosu's book is anything but sober. He fills it with stories that most people can relate to where people made assumptions about someone and found out later they were wrong. Life is messy, and people are messier.

We've all done it. Jones-Fosu meets people where they are.

At the end of each chapter, the exercises make for a great book discussion book where members could discuss and act on a chapter a week.

He went outside the big three of gender, race, and sexuality in this book, which is something I haven't found in the last four books I've read on inclusion. His chapter on privilege was one of my favorites. An example of right-handed privilege was an easy way to explain that it doesn't mean you are a terrible person; you just have something that can't be taken away from you. He's a black man. He may be oppressed as a black person, but he has privilege as a man.

The goal of real diversity is not that we always agree, but rather when we disagree, we still respect each other. I cannot recommend this book enough. I also watched the 7-part series on YouTube, and it is well worth it for the humor and thought-provoking stories that will make you want to share them with friends and family.

This book helps to open your mind to having an inclusive mindset in how to approach life. It explains complex issues in ways that make them easier to digest and understand. Not only does this book help broaden your way of thinking but it also provides actional steps you can do to make this world a better place by bettering yourself. In its simplest form, it urges the reader to listen, learn, act, and repeat!

Whether you are looking for something to assist with your own personal growth, a community organization, or workplace, there are important messages that can be applied to all areas.

Some of my favorite quotes are:
"The Inclusive Mindset is a willingness to approach each day with curiosity, openness, and a desire to treat people you meet with respect and dignity."
"Life is messy; people are messier."
"We have the opportunity to embrace the opportunity to consistently get 1 percent better each day"
"Make small changes in a big way that can lead to sustained growth by developing inclusivity as a habit."

When so many of us are now (finally!) talking about diversity and inclusion in our lives and workplaces, The Inclusive Mindset is a personal and accessible approach to do more and know better. With a focus on respect progress rather than ideals and perfection, this is an engaging and realistic and important and yes sometimes light-hearted way to look at the world in a more caring and open minded way. Recommend it highly.

Justin Jones -Fosu brings the energy with his view on diversity, inclusion, and equity for all no matter where you are at in your equity / diversity journey.

I had always judged for their ‘I’m color-blind’ comments / mindset but after reading this book I’ve found that we truly need to be inclusive and help folks to learn why what they are saying isn’t landing the way they meant it. With Growth Mindset as a large focus I appreciate how this was incorporated into my own D&I / Equity journey. Truly enjoyable read.

Powerful, insightful book on the inclusive mindset. I for some reason thought this book was geared toward teachers specifically, however, it is geared toward everyone and provides valuable communication skills and concepts for when it comes to working with a variety of people.

I honestly think EVERYONE should read this book. It’s that amazing! I would say anyone working with other people, in any atmosphere, would benefit from reading this book (and taking notes, and highlighting in the book/ if you’re like me, even color coding, I would call this a TOOL after all).

This book has (but also much, much more):
- concepts and ideas for handling conflict, tough conversations, differing views, arguments, etc.
- has MANY real life scenarios, examples, and evidence
- has visuals!!!!!!! Diagrams/ graphics to better understand concepts
- is relatable to ANYONE from any background
- thoroughly discusses the topic of the inclusive mindset, diversity and inclusion, and various communication skills/ practical tools or application for when working/ collaborating with others

I would just buy it, if you even are considering it! It’s definitely a worthy investment. It is even a great book to share with friends/ family looking for a good book!

I read this one for book club. Its a nice length. The first few chapters didn't present much new information to me, but later in the book Jones-Fosu discusses conversation strategies and practical ways to be that I found valuable. I appreciated the practical tips for moving beyond learning about our differences to building relationships with people who are not like me in a variety of ways.
My biggest takeaways from this book were:
-one inclusion strategy is to be inviting and to notice other people and behave with an intent to reach out and bring in; be available and open, invite-able. (I could be more inviting and invitable).
-2 steps for giving feedback: 1) ask if its welcome 2) assume positive intent in the other person.
-be more interested than interesting. Ask good questions. (I could put more focus and intention to listening and being curious about other people).
-the “power of 3” conversation strategy. (This strategy supports being interested.)

The Inclusive Mindset reads like an ABC of inclusive thinking — clear, well-structured, and thought-provoking. What I particularly appreciated was that it didn’t come across as preachy or combative. Instead, it invites reflection and awareness without pushing a fight-or-flight agenda. Although written in a U.S. context, its themes and messages feel highly relevant and applicable to the Estonian context as well.

I listened to the audiobook version, and I always find it impactful when the author narrates their own work as it lends an extra layer of authenticity and intention to each word.

That said, the book stayed mostly on an intellectual level for me. While it offered insight, it didn’t quite strike an emotional chord. As inclusion is, above all, a matter of the heart more than the mind and I found myself wishing the book had embodied that sentiment a bit more.

Overall, it’s a worthwhile listen for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of inclusive thinking.

Feedback: the authenticity brought tears to my eyes at times and the suggested strategies were insightful and holistic. I loved the interwoven character qualities of courage, humility, respect, supportive, good listener, curiosity and empathy. These all require positive actions toward an inclusive mindset and inclusiveness in our lives and environments. While requesting the reader to become vulnerable, you demonstrated vulnerability and held that sincerity and truthful approach throughout. Your words challenge us all to examine our personal narratives and reach beyond our personal comfort zones. One small action step everyday, week, month and eventually a habit that encompasses who we are in every aspect of our lives. Beginner Allyship gives us all a place to start and inspires us fill up the half full glass.

FIVE STARS! I gobbled this book up. Justin's story-based, relatable, positive, and authentic approach takes a complex and heavy subject and makes it simple and actionable. Not an easy feat!

It's a MUST READ for those of us working on learning more about how to make diversity and inclusion a real thing in our lives, not just a slogan or a wish. If you’re looking for an uplifting approach to the topic of diversity and inclusion, look no further. It's so refreshing to feel inspired instead of shamed, and to be given bite-sized strategies to use in everyday life. It's like a practical guidebook that I can see pulling out over and over again to inspire me to my next level of growth.

This book is helping me be a better parent, a better team mate, a better neighbour, and a better human.

Prior to reading the Inclusive Mindset, the word diversity had a bit of a negative connotation in my mind. I couldn’t help but think of some organizations’ reference to ‘Diversity in the workplace’, and how this was representative of a bottom line more than anything else. I appreciate Justin’s thoughtful presentation. He gently reminds the reader to bring humanity to the equation; useful for any setting. I love the ‘Action Forwards’ at the end of each chapter, which encourage the reader to take action, step outside the box, and incorporate concepts which foster growth and inclusivity. By the end of this book, I felt I had gained a better understanding of how to contribute to my community in a more meaningful way.

Reading this book was absolutely inspiring. As an individual from many privileged identities, this book provided me with small steps to establish an inclusive mindset. Sometimes it's challenging to appear as an ally to marginalized populations and I wanted to find ways to speak my truth that I am an ally, a support system, and a resource for those that need me. This book provides relevant examples, small tips/tricks, and speaks about diversity from a humanity viewpoint. This will be a book I use as a professional to better myself, my team, and the individuals I collaborate with on a daily basis.

I had written out my review on Kindle, and then it disappeared!

Take 2:

This book is the perfect mix of relatable anecdotes and scholarly research and data.
This is a practical guide with specific action items for taking a topic that can be seen as overwhelming or monumental and breaking it down to achievable steps.

I love the 3x5 Beginner Allyship Model and the Inclusive Mindset Plan and all of the lists of ways to incorporate the inclusive mindset in your everyday life.

Curiosity is key. No one has all of the answers, and asking questions is how we learn and grow.

Highly recommended!

Having previously seen the author speak in person, then following him on social media, I was excited to read his book; and I was not disappointed. This is an excellent book that successfully balances the author's personal experiences and perspective with research-based insight and suggestions for how we, as individuals, can practice the inclusive mindset of the title. Some of the information about bias, etc. was not new (to me); but I appreciated how approachable he makes the content, and how practical the suggestions are.

As a former educator and union representative, diversity trainings in the past were singularly focused on certain aspects of diversity, until now. Justin Jones-Fosu has created a masterpiece of diversity topics, examples, practices, a virtual WHO, WHAT, HOW, to apply Inclusive Mindset skills for all. This is a must have book for individuals and organizations in traversing the mine fields of problems the world faces today. Congratulations Justin on an excellent effort. JB

The Inclusive Mindset is full of insight, inspiration, and ideas on how best to embrace diversity & inclusion in your everyday life. This book is a great reminder that even when you feel your actions are small or inconsequential, the reality is that each action has the potential to leave a significant impact on others and lead to real, positive change in our communities and in our world. This book serves as a bridge to bring people together on this extremely important topic.

I am a little biased as I am the author of this book, but when I re-read it, I am continually challenged to be more curious about others and give a deeper sense of grace to others when people don't get it right. I am ignorant in many things, and reading my own book challenges me to keep growing while striving for progression, not perfection.

Great Book

A great place to start if you want to better understand what diversity really is and what it is not. Justin's heart can certainly be found within the pages and you can authentically feel the investment he is making in changing the world.

Not a fan of the cheerful, talkative style, but it had some good definitions and ideas. I liked the example of how systems favor (privilege) right-handed people. Available free (OR residents) from the Ford Family Foundation.

Good gut check

The later chapters were the most beneficial to me as one which has committed to DEI and an inclusive mindset for many years now. Inclusiveness is indeed a mindset that is intentionally cultivates. Sensitive, divisive concepts are handled with grace.
