Hiragi has finally escaped the attentions of her bubbly and boisterous classmate Utsugi…so why is the resulting peace and quiet so dang depressing? And why is Utsugi ignoring her in the first place? Meanwhile, thanks to Yatsude’s “help,” Rei is having bra troubles--and not long after, Kei’s bra suffers from the same mysterious ailment. Is anyone capable of behaving in this series?
The girls are up to their usual tricks, which basically means driving one another crazy with their antics. But amidst all the janefoolery, things are changing in ways both large and small…
This isn’t as funny as the series has been, but I do think it fully achieves what I wanted from it after the first volume. Frankly, I’d rather have an amusing narrative that grows its characters than a gut-buster that doesn’t bother making me care about what’s going on.
And there’s a lot to care about here. I really wish we had a cast page because it IS annoying having to look it up myself constantly and that’s a constant gripe from me, but, c’mon, there are twins for pity’s sake!
Speaking of, this volume immediately earns some goodwill by focusing on Hiiragi, the mean twin, who gets steadfastly ignored by the normally exuberant (and all over her) Utsugi, which causes a massive rethink of her actions to this point and a self-realization that has been a long time coming, even if her take on things might not be quite mired in reality.
The ending of this one is absolutely charming and really softens Hiiragi down to a tolerable level of crabby while also giving Utsugi a great moment in the sun (her second comes when the disciplinary committee sees how she dresses and nearly short circuits in a separate chapter - the student council here is cliche but fun).
My favourite sections actually involve the dull-yet-good twin, Tsubaki, largely because she continues to bump up against the very flashy Hinako and, to a much lesser extent, the gyaru, Koname. Hinako really, really hates Tsubaki.
Really, really, really.
And if you think she doth protest too much, you are dead right. Tsubaki is still the slightest cast member, but she does get some fleshing out here and this story turns into a bit of a lesson on how you don’t have to be exactly alike just to get along.
Or, you know, to have a very adorable date in all but name only. The montage of these two coming together for an afternoon is going to be a tough one to beat for best thing I read this week. The pairing is just so odd and that uniqueness really makes them stand out
Rei and Kei, ostensibly our leads, definitely blend more into the ensemble here, but what we do get is great. Rei fully goes disaster lesbian in this one and that mixes with the utterly oblivious Kei to good effect.
Rei figuring out that Kei’s incredibly suggestible is a lot of fun (plus the omake where her morals throw a wrench into a classic trope) and the beach section with the movie club is a blast (especially when Kei is sabotaged by her sister).
The needle drop at the end of the beach scene where it’s revealed that Tsubaki is a lot more perceptive than Yatsude, who is mostly on hand to cause mischief, is a great parting shot and looks like it’ll really send things in a whole other direction.
In fact, clueless characters knowing a lot more than they appear is a mini runner in this one, as Kaname figures out Hinako’s secrets with a deduction that would put Sherlock Holmes to shame during the second-best iteration of the Pocky game I’ve ever seen (this one is particularly steamy though).
Definitely enough here to get the full four stars. This isn’t the next great yuri series, but it is turning into a lot of fun. I had a blast spending time with all these characters and it was very silly and very sweet in equal measure. What more can you ask for in a good book?
Was worried after the first few chapters were relatively shaky compared to previous volumes, but this culminates in an absurdly fun string of chapters, with the series' erratic knack for setup and payoff over several hundred pages cohering into an intersection of ensemble members that yields one of the funniest punchlines in the manga. One of the contemporary best yuri gag manga around, shouldn't have doubted this series' demented brilliance.
Well I loved this one. There's actual momentum, or at least it feels that way. Everyone gets some light and development here and it's become quite a fun book to consume. Everyone is so cute and while there's not much conflict to speak of, I'm just having a lot of fun with all the characters.
Everything just gets even better in this volume, from character relationships and changing dynamics! A bit more introspection here and there, and then a lovely flashback of our main duo's entrance ceremony antics.
I’m going to have to reread these before the 4th bc I got confused with the twins. (There are twins aren’t there?) However I find myself drawn in to their shenanigans…
drags slightly in this volume. Rei and Kei taking a back seat means I have to differentiate between the other characters more often lol. beach chapter is cute tho
