Cameron Wants to Be a Hero

Rate this book
Lake: Did you get his number this time?
Cameron: Yes. But I'm not sure I should use it so soon.
Lake: What's soon? Didn't you last see him yesterday?
Cameron: I thought you're meant to wait three days? Otherwise it looks desperate.
Lake: You are desperate.
Cameron: Thanks.
Lake: From everything you've told me, sounds like this could be something.
Cameron: You think?
Lake: Message him. Keep it sexy.

When it comes to romance books, Cameron Morland can always read between the lines.
When it comes to real romance, he may need a dictionary.

Or Jane.

It's Northanger Abbey, complete with a neo-gothic mansion and charming misunderstandings. But contemporary. And gay.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

I will be frank here and say that I struggled with the writing style with this one, but once I got over it a bit, I enjoyed the story overall.

- Cameron is the truest form of a cinnamon roll character. His inner monologues, dialogues, thought process and reactions to what was happening around him were very sweet and endearing. he was simply adorable if a bit unrealistic at times, but that's ok! it's fiction after al.

Henry was also a delight. the English teacher with the mischievous streak who was drawn to Cameron like a moth to a flame.

The friendship that sparked between these men was realistic and sweet. They talked and understood each other. I loved the almost lack of drama.

The UST, the intimacy and the love scenes were in point.. I would have loved more sex scenes though... #Greedy

Loved the ending

Hated John with a passion... he was creepy.

All in all... it was a goood read!

Yep, this is it, this is what I am after. I freaking adored this book.

Poor Cameron, too polite to say no, too shy to ask for what he wants.

Our MC was earthworm spineless and would have been incredibly annoying had he not been such an endearing character and it didn’t result in such a swoony sweet slow burn.

There was such a delectable loyalty to the way these MC’s interacted with and treated each other that pleased me like crazy.

In true Austen form the side characters were hilariously absurd and super fun to hate.

I almost forgot to mention the TEXT CONVERSATIONS, EMAILS AND LETTERS. Oh goodness, pleasure overload.

Also there were cute illustrations interspersed. Such an unexpected treat.

Reading a reimagining of a book you like is a whole different ballpark! I'm really pleased with the detail Anyta took to making it as accurate to the original as possible while still feeling really modern. Also, the characters of each book are interconnected! It gives the series a whole lot more cohesiveness than if none of the characters knew each other.
I really enjoyed Cameron and Henry. Northanger Abbey is not my favorite Austen book (that honor is fought between Mansfield park and Persuasion), but I did find it enjoyable and funny, and this remake has both aspects in it. Tolerating the embarrassment of the first book feels more worth it now with the rest as an open field for the taking!

This 'retelling' just reminded me of how much I really don't like 'the classics'...

I didn't like a single character in this at all and I was hoping for a tragic ending not a HEA because they're all shitty people.

Granted I've never even tried to read Northanger Abbey, but if it's anything like this with a completely spineless main character who gets pushed around by everyone and never speaks up, then I guarantee I wont like it.

Cameron is the character he writes in his own book - he doesn't change. He's full of cowardice and doesn't stand up for himself at any point. He lets people walk all over him, including his own family. I kept waiting for him to realise that he owes these people nothing and that he deserves to be heard and to have autonomy over his choices at the very least, but nope. He does nothing. He ends the book in the same way he started it - the only reason he get's his HEA is because Henry makes the decision.

Isabelle and John were hideous people, Fred had no purpose to existing and the tension around Alicia felt pretty pointless. Both father's were awful - the only thing I can relate to in this whole book.

Georgie was probably the nicest character but she was so condescending to Cameron and his naivety that I still didn't like her!

What I am sure of is that I would have HATED being alive in the time of Jane Austen - obedience and I do not mesh and these kind of books and characters just piss me off 😂

Cameron is a nice guy who never seems to express his wants out loud. He meets Henry who seems to be the able to say exactly what he wants.

The two hit it off the first night they meet in Cameron's office. However, lots of inconveniences prevent interaction for a while. When they meet again they exchange numbers which leads to texting and emailing of letters. Their relationship blossoms through words.

Henry's father knows nothing of Henry's bisexuality. He loves his son but may not accept all of him. This causes some friction in the relationship.

Cameron spending time with Henry gives him the courage to finally ask for what he wants most.

Overall, a cute story. Isabelle, her brother John and Cameron's father were all horrible characters. The way they run all over Cameron made my anxiety levels spike. I'm glad he finally found his courage with 2 out of 3 of them. I do wish there was some resolution to his problem with his father. I do also wish I knew what went on with Henry and his. I don't like unanswered questions. Other then that it was a solid read.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

The story was great, there was chemistry between Cameron and Henry from the very first second. The writing is not always my style and I did not like how Cameron let others treat him, I wish that was different. I think Anyta Sunday does a very good job transforming Austens book in contemporary m/m romance and I am looking forward to the next book.

Edit after thinking about it: I felt the end was very rushed and I did not like that Cameron was being pushed again and again. But in the end I liked it very much.

My favorite Jane Austen book has finally gotten the retelling it deserves! AND from someone who loves it (and a certain mischievous hero) as much as I do. Be still my heart...

The book follows the original pretty closely: Adorably shy dreamer Cameron (who desperately wants to finally be the hero of his story and no longer just a "footnote in all the stories around him") meets mischievous, teasing Henry at a party and finally finds something in the present worth fighting for. Sparks fly, there's bickering and teasing galore, dancing (of course)...

Will I make an appearance in your journal?" Holy hell, could Cameron flush any harder? "'While hiding from my own party, I was ambushed by a despicable English intruder, who snooped through my things and made the most scandalous move to waltz with me.'" "Not what I'd say. Wrong, finally. How relieving." "Want to know what I hope you'll write?" "Go on, then." "I danced with a friendly man and indulged in titillating conversation. His quick wit and bountiful humor agree with me- I hope I bump into him again."

(For reference, here's Austen's version of that scene:
"I shall make but a poor figure in your journal tomorrow." "My journal!" "Yes, I know exactly what you will say: Friday, went to the Lower Rooms [...] - appeared to much advantage; but was strangely harassed by a queer, half-witted man, who would make me dance with him, and distressed me by his nonsense." "Indeed, I shall say no such thing." "Shall I tell you what you ought to say?" "If you please." "I danced with a very agreeable young man [...], had a great deal of conversation with him -seems the most extraordinary genius- hope I may know more of him.")

I ADORE Henry and Cameron together. They have stolen the title of favorite couple from Cal and Percy/ Pax and neighbor Cliff! I love how Cameron grows and learns to stand up for himself, how
Henry teases him about everything and the dreaded word "nice" (if you don't get it, read the original ;))... I could talk about my love for these two all day. <3 They complement each other so well, help each other grow, and just BELONG. I adore how they get to know each other through the written word and how Henry helps Cameron find the strength to voice his desires out loud. Their journey was just so incredibly heartwarming!

Another stroke of genius was combining the characters of General Tilney and Darcy. It perfectly sets up the next book (a retelling of Pride and Prejudice), and gives a nice reason for Darcy's initial coldness. Have I mentioned how much I love this series yet? If not, it needs to be said :D

I also will forever be grateful for this book introducing me to the amazing The Charioteer, the book Henry wrote his dissertation on and introduces Cameron to. Seriously, go read it, it's beautiful and heart-breaking.

"I love the way you say the most touching things between the lines." "I love that you can hear them."

Thanks Anyta, for writing one of my new favorite books based on one of my all-time favorite books!

2.5 rounded up to 3.

I struggled with this one. I really wanted to connect with the characters and I normally love when they have some epistolary in there, but I have to admit that I cringed with every conversation, text and letters.

Cameron was a cinnamon roll and I was rooting for him, but at times his texts and letters were a big ‘nope’ for me.

I didn’t like Henry at all. I will give hin that he is a master of saying things between the lines.

The siblings of hell should return to it. Anyta did superb with them, I really hated them and to elicit that from me? Well, I normally just feel apathy hahahah.

I am very disappointed with the ending, it felt rushed and open, which I don’t like. I don’t have an answer to what happened with both, Henry’s dad or Cameron’s dad, I have no idea what Brandon is doing... Fred... etc.

I just hope that we don’t get Fred’s book.

Anyways, does this mean that I love Anyta’s books any less or that I will never touch another of her books again? OF COURSE NOT! I love Anyta and I can’t wait to have the next installment of this saga. I normally connect with her characters and stories and I super love how she’s the queen of slow burn.

This book was not for me, it happens. It doesn’t mean that this is not a wonderful book.

I received my ARC from GRR Tours.

I really wanted to love this book of Cameron and Henry as much as I loved the first book.
But you cannot compares Lake and Knight story, the sweet and the chemistry between them was there since the very beginning.
While Henry and Cameron seemed like forced, because Henry approached Cameron first and they had almost the same problems. Fathers.
Not to mention John who's always trying to separate them, with his weird sibling as well.
I didn't really like that Cameron cannot say no to Isabella and John.
Henry seemed like a nice guy, but a little bit of less spine in my opinion.
But I like the happy ending though.
Overall, this is an entertaining story especially when Anyta put Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot as guest stars.

Northanger Abbey is my least favourite of Austen's work so I dived into this with a little lower expectations (even if its by Anyta Sunday, who's one of my favourites). In the end, I absolutely loved Cameron Wants To Be A Hero! Cameron and Henry both spoke to me on a personal level; I related heavily on Cameron's insecurities and incapability to say no and how he'd rather dive into fictional worlds than attend parties and such. I also understood Henry's struggle to have a close relationship with his father and be true to himself. A teenager me needed this book in her life, and I appreciate it so much now.

The romance is very adorable and cute, I enjoyed Cameron and Henry's moments together. Full of Sunday's trademark sharp wit and nuanced dialogue with a mix of cluelessness, all of which I love a lot. One thing bothered me a bit: there were some issues and situations which were not resolved. I wish there'd been an additional chapter tying in some of them, including some resolve between Cameron and his father, even if its an acknowledgement that they'd never be close, and what happened to John and Isabella.

All in all, I loved Cameron Wants To Be A Hero and I'm eagerly anticipating the next Love, Austen book!

This series is really missing the mark for me. This one was better (though it would be hard to get any worse..) than book one as far as the romance was concerned. Sorta. I did like the early chemistry between them but I'll admit once the Big Feels started getting involved.. eh. Also, the sexting scene was cringe. Which, hey, good time to segue, I am not enjoying any of the author's sex scenes so far. Big nope. I full on skimmed that last chapter just to get it all over with.

However the main fail for me was.. every other character involved, with the only exception being the love interest's sister, Georgie, in this book. Seriously, toss them right into a volcano.

Honestly, though, the writing, the dialogue, the random weird transitions, lack of payoff from some scenes, the terrible cast.. and why, when you have an entire novel to pull from, you can barely cobble together a fleshed out homage/retelling? It's just beyond me. That said, the P&P instalment is next and at that point I'm halfway through so, even if that one fails, I'll just push on and wrap the series. At least they're a quick read.

Shoutout to the packpackpack for keeping me sane through this buddy read experience. What would we do without gifs.

This author excels with slow burn stories where there is a lot of tension, attraction, playful banter, hurt, where many many words are telling a story without saying it straight out, where the romance is slow-paced, just like here with Cameron’s story.

Cameron has low self-esteem and his father isn’t helping. When he meets Henry his life changes.

Wrong friends and stubborn family made the road a cobbled one.

I wish I could magically put two siblings away to the other side of the planet ugh ugh!
I was biting my nails so anxious I got by them. Also, I wanted to shake Cameron and told him to speak up! I will be honest I wanted to stop reading, I just can’t handle these circumstances.

There are scripts, letters, e-mails, full of humor and sweetness.
Taking the long way they, thank goodness, finally end up together. Awesome!
I always have a love hate relationship with this author’s stories. They are absolutely stunningly written, poetic and romantic, but the slow burn is killing.

4.5 Stars!

This series is just making me so happy. Once I start reading, I honestly am unable to put the books down, and I read with a smile on my face the entire time. Like I said with the previous book, I have not read any Jane Austen, but it definitely did not take away from my enjoyment at all. It's a full story on it's own, and Cameron and Henry really shone. Sunday wrote 2 of the most endearing characters ever while also having 2 of the most obnoxious characters ever and it made for such a great well-rounded story. Lovely story, slow-burn and adorable romance, and some super cute illustrations. I originally picked up this series because I think the covers are absolutely phenomenal, but I will now continue for the amazing stories I'm finding inside.

“Nice.”
“You hate that word.”
“Not with you.”

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that I didn’t read Northanger Abbey .Or any other book by Jane Austen except for Pride and Prejudice. I know, I know, SHAME on me! I need to catch up with the classics.

description

Anyway, putting that shameful confession behind us, I’d say that I found this book a pleasant read. Clearly, I missed all the reference to Northanger Abbey but the story is enjoyable equally. So my fellow non-classic readers have no excuse.

I cannot count all the times I could relate with Cameron when he was expressing his feelings toward books. He was such an adorable MC, I liked the way Anyta Sunday portrayed his shyness without making him a loner. And you could tell that Henry was the perfect match for him since the moment they met. His confidence helped Cameron to overcome the obstacles he was creating to himself.

I’d make a shout out to the author for creating the most obnoxious characters that I’ve ever read so far. John and Isabella are easily in my top ten most hateful characters. Especially John, every time he opened his mouth I was rolling my eyes so hard.

If you are looking for a slow burn retelling with lovable characters (and others not so much) this is the story for you! And can I say how lovely and accurate the cover and art inside the book are?

I love Anyta Sunday and usually devour her books, but I really struggled with this one. It’s beautifully written and she does a great job building the romance between Henry and Cameron. The letters and texts are sweet and sexy. However, I didn’t like any of the characters. Cameron was really annoying. He had no backbone and refused to help himself out of bad situations. I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for him? Henry was ok, but I didn’t really connect with him either. Isabella and John are terrible. It was difficult for me to get into the romance when everyone was so self-centered. She continues to be the queen of the Slow Burn Romance, and I wanted to like it, but I was kind of over Cameron by the end. I’m rounding 3.5 stars up to four because I do love her writing, but I was disappointed with this one.

I am delighted to say i enjoyed this book so much! Very close to a five star read for me and i binged it, Cameron and Henry stole my heart from their first scene together and i was in love with them as go through all the feelings.

He was fated to serve as a footnote in all the stories around him.

Cameron is adorable and so relatable, his very awkwards and doesn't want to upset anyone so tends to just agree. He puts others before himself a lot, but his very passionate at heart and his writing is beautiful.

Henry is hilarious and full of mischief, he has a sense of adventure and lots of passion though his also good at hiding. I really enjoyed his growth and adoration of Cameron.

I like you quoting with me. No matter the book. I love learning what words shape(d) you.

These two suit each other perfectly from that first moment their connection is clear, the interest and fascination for one another i was swept away. I loved all of their moments together as they find time alone, the affection and support they provide for each other is stunning.

Also i am obsessed with all of the love language in this book, its gorgeous and just so lovely to see. From all of the letters, the quotes and of course the steamy texts - there is so much chemistry between these two and when they finally kiss its stunning.

I realized we are them. All of us. Anyone who faces choice in their life, and the battle it takes to follow the call of our souls.

So many lingering looks and touches - how they search each other out in a room. The dancing and the exploring of Henry's home, i was just in love with every moment.

The side cast were a mixed bunch, some i adored such as Brandon and others i could have done without. Plenty of misunderstandings and drama as to be expected, however they actually communicate rather well so it didn't last too long and wasn't as annoying as it could have been.

Isn't it wonderful, how words connect people? The words we say and the ones left unsaid?

Sadly towards the last few chapters it feel a little flat for me, as just as they announced their love it seemed to be the end and just felt very abrupt. Left some things unsaid/finished with sidecast, that i would have loved to have seen on page.

Oh there are some incredible illustrations throughout the book too! Which i was so glad to see, they brought the scenes to life and made me smile to see the characters in art is always wonderful.

However it does end with a beautiful happy ending, where Cameron has definitely become the hero of his own story and is looking towards a beautiful future with Henry 💕

I read romance for escapism, the achievable happily ever after.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It certainly elicited strong reactions from me!
On the one hand I got very frustrated with Cameron: he is so incapable of saying no and afraid of disappointing others, he finds himself dragged along and doing things he doesn’t want to but just seem to can’t get out of. (My frustration is probably due to the fact that I am much the same as he is, so... there’s that!)
I loved Henry, steady and always there and patient enough to wait Cameron out. Granted, he could have maybe be more direct and open in his advances and pursuit, but he probably did not want to scare him off.
In my opinion the scene is stolen from the two MCs by the nasty, annoying, rude neighbour siblings, John and Isabella, who are so outrageous I had to put down the book to calm myself whenever they were on page!
All in all I enjoyed the book, it felt a bit hurried in the end, I would have loved to know what happened with Henry’s father and with poor Brandon, but the story was nice, and I love how Anyta Sunday is wording this books, in a way that feels suspended between modern times and Austen’s one….

Anyta Sunday sabe darle voz a Henry.

((sigh)) I absolutely loved Cameron, he deserves all the good things in life. I didn't enjoy much else about the story surrounding him though....

There’s a lot to love about this retelling of Northanger Abbey. The characters, love them or hate them (looking at you, Isabella) absolutely drew me in. The eccentric setting, which Sunday does an amazing job of bringing to life. The slow burn, pining, full of electricity romance between our heroes, Cameron and Henry. The way the writing flows and somehow works as both a modern story, yet still manages to have this classic, romantic feel to it. It all comes together seamlessly.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read Austen. And I’ll admit to never quite being able to get through Northanger Abbey.

I had zero issues devouring Cameron Wants to Be a Hero.

The story of Cameron and Henry had me from their very first meeting.

I absolutely loved Cameron. He was often naive, but that’s sort of the point here. He’s so into his books that sometimes he just doesn’t seem to connect well with people in the real world. He’s sweet. And sweet is wildly underrated. Seriously, Cameron is just the perfect cinnamon roll hero.

Henry is charming, funny and sexy. It’s easy to see why Cameron is captivated by him.

The illustrations thrown in added a definite charm to the book.

While this book is the second in Sunday’s Austen series, it absolutely can be read as a standalone. I’ve read and reviewed the first book in the series, Emerett Has Never Been In Love and I highly recommend giving it a read as well, though.

This book really does check a lot of boxes. It’s sweet, romantic, sexy, fun. It has great characters. The writing is beautiful. We have actual bi representation.

I just don’t think you can go wrong with this one.

I’m looking forward to the next one in this series.

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the first book in the series and I loved this one too. Although, somehow, I feel like this one is very different, I can't really describe it. If Lake and Knight weren't mentioned, I would think this is a standalone. There were also significantly less characters here, which I enjoyed more.

This is a story about Cameron and Henry.

Cameron is Lake's friend and neighbor. He's a book nerd, very shy and anxious, sometimes slightly awkward. Cameron knows who he is and what he wants, but sometimes struggles saying it out loud and standing up for himself. Let me tell you, HE IS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. I loved everything about Cameron, his obsession with books, his shy demeanor, his love for his brother...

Henry though, is a complete opposite. He's an extrovert, he's bubbly, flirty and completely smitten with Cameron. He's so patient and sweet and I loved how he treated Cameron from the start, he wasn't pushy, but encouraging and supportive. He's not out to his father and that eventually becomes an obstacle for the two of them.

From the moment they met, their chemistry was explosive. I loved their first meeting, their first dance and just such a natural progression, nothing forced or awkward. They were so clearly enamored with each other from the beginning. I loved their every encounter, their little adventures and dates and how slowly, but surely they fell in love with each other.

The only characters I didn't like were Isabelle and Josh. Ugh, just... No. They were both so inappropriate and pushy and just too much. I loved Henry's sister Georgie and Cameron's brother Brandon though.

Plus, the illustrations were absolutely stunning. I just love this book so much.

I received an ARC from the author and I'm forever grateful.

Beautifully updated retelling of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.

Northanger Abbey has always been a difficult book for me because a lot of the characters are quite unlikeable, and I really struggle with that. I think the author has captured these horrid characters perfectly, and John's actions in particular are relevant to the current elevation of discussions around consent.

Henry is so full of life, especially compared to Cameron, who starts the book as someone unable to speak up for himself or his needs. There's fortunately some character growth for Cameron, so we get to see him blossom into confidence and they are much better matched by the end.

The gothic quality of the original is much more subtly weaved throughout this contemporary take, with ghostly undertones that just creep the tension up that little bit.

If you like Northanger Abbey and books about men falling in love, this book is absolutely for you.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I have chosen to leave an honest review.
