EDGE OF FEAR is BOOK 3 in the thrilling post-apocalyptic survival prepper EMP fiction AMERICAN FALLOUT.
This is book three of the American Fallout series and after the surprise sudden added on ending of the previous book, the start of this one is not much better. Liz is now claiming that she killed the preacher, when in fact it was her daughter Sierra. Sierra has been missing for three days, just after her father returned, and Liz had rescued both of her kids from the evil clutches of the preacher and his cult. But we already know that Sierra is found dead due to the last sentence or two of book two! The start of the book has Boyd, the man who saved Luke at the end of his journey, suddenly gone and deciding to travel months to reach any existing family he might have on the other side of the country, rather than stay with Luke and his family. Derek, the man who saved Sierra when she was being attacked by strangers at the start of her bike ride to their bug out cabin, is suddenly back in the picture. Whilst looking for his missing daughter, Luke overhears a group from the preacher’s cult, who now call themselves the Children of the Bomb, talking about killing all non-believers and those responsible for killing their previous leader, aka Liz and her kids, but Liz doesn’t want to confront them and cause more violence! What she is thinking is beyond belief, when a group have already tried to kill her and her kids multiple times and stolen their food supplies, now she is acting as a pacifist. The author really needs to work on what skills and mindset each character has, as those with the military skills have been sadly lacking, and not wanting to protect yours and what you have suddenly, is the wrong move against a fanatical group. Considering how much Sierra seemed to like Adam in the previous books, her sudden one eighty about face to be talking about why Derek hasn’t noticed her and why he doesn’t think she’s fit and want her, since no guys have ever walked away from her before, is really odd and she seems to have forgotten the very situation her flatmate Nina saved her from, with a guy she was interested in, but who drugged her and was about to let every one of his pals have her! Her thoughts about Derek lead her to do something she knows she shouldn’t and the secret he was trying to hide is revealed. Leading him to do something that will have repercussions in his relationship with Luke and his family. The COB, the Children of the Bomb cult have been growing their numbers and their presence near to Luke and Liz’s cabin is causing concern. A huge gun battle seals the deal near the end of the book. The author’s really bad attempt at a cliffhanger and then starting this book with the discovery of Sierra’s dead body, leaves it very confusing when the story suddenly backtracks and Luke is still out looking for his daughter. Lots then of three days earlier, two days earlier and one day earlier, pull you into the mess of Sierra’s disappearance and Derek’s which was actually called out but never done anything about at the time. Sierra was her own worst enemy, but she tried to do the right thing at one point and ruined it by not being able to keep quiet the next. A confusing storyline, with lots of contradictory information and characters who don’t act as they should from the life experiences they have. In book three Derek is described as a former Navy Seal, but in the first book he was a Marine, whilst Luke was the one in the Navy and a Navy Seal. At least we got to see a bit more about Kyle in this last book, but he still acted his age at times and placed himself in grave danger, much like his sister. He at least, I would have thought would take a gun with him to a gunfight! If the characters are supposed to be preppers and former Navy Seals, then they really should have more situational awareness in enemy areas and in protecting their own homes. The whole premise about who dropped the nuclear weapons on the eight cities was never truly discovered, with only a very quick decision about it being one certain country, rather than a home grown effort or other countries they have issues with. Some of the books are readable and enjoyable, but the inconsistencies mean this gets a much lower grading than it would have gotten if they weren’t included. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Warning some spoilers! I read the first 2 books of American Fallout and enjoyed them. This one annoyed me from the beginning because of some mistakes. In the first book it was stated that Luke was a former Navy Seal. And Derek was a Marine. In this one Derek was a Navy Seal and Luke a former soldier. Later in the book Luke became a Navy Seal again and Derek a soldier, not a Marine! Yes,Marines are not soldiers, they are Marines! My husband is/was a Marine. In the second book,Sierra killed the crazy Preacher, but in this one it was her Mother that did it instead. The book just skimmed over some things or ignored explanations, like what happened to Derek's parents, the death of Sierra, and why the community co-operative of the families around Liz and the Weights ended. It wasn't a horrible book, but I wish the continuity from the 2 nd book had been better. I like Apocalyptic books with bunkers, lol,so that helped the rating to up.
Short term memory issues or just lazy writing? So many issues. Let’s start with them referencing, probably a dozen times, that Liz killed the cult leader. She didn’t, Sierra did. No mention of Adam and his mom in this story. Another story line that was started then simply ignored. And how did Derek end up living in their area? No mention of that, or what happened to his parents. Many more examples of storylines left unfinished or completely unaddressed.

This is the final book in the series, however I feel it was to short. There are still some areas that needed to be clarified. All in all an okay read. Not my favorite post apocalyptic read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Quick and easy read. Interesting and fast pace. Lots of foreshadowing and action scenes as well as emotional drama. Definitely enjoy reading series. I finished all three books in just a couple days.
I really enjoyed this series. Partially because l taught a nuclear arms briefing in the Air Force and partially l am from San Jose. It was enjoyable reading about a setting l was very familiar with. I would highly recommend this series,
