The delightful third novel in the bestselling Gabriel’s Bay series.

Big trouble is brewing, secrets are coming out, threatening reputations and even lives. Outsiders are in town with questionable motives. Power and privilege are casting a seductive but ominous spell. And the Love Bus is completely munted.

All your favourite characters are back: Mac, down-to-earth as ever; Sidney, eight months pregnant and feeling it; Dr Ghadavi, anxious to do right; Patricia, quietly determined; Bernard, who must face his nemesis; and young Barrett, unable to face the truth.

It’s crunch time for Gabriel’s Bay, and nothing less than magic might be needed to protect this close-knit community and its future.

If you like fast-paced plots, sparkling funny dialogue and heartfelt emotion, I'm the romcom author for you. I write about real people struggling with real stuff, but who each get their own happy ending. My brand of humor is perceptive and kind and I love jokes and wordplay. I love to write series with characters who develop through each book - basically, I hate to let them go! I live in the glorious wine country of New Zealand, and share my life with one husband, two grown sons, four cats, two dogs and a flock of no longer spring chickens. Spellbound is the third novel in the Gabriels Bay series. I have read them in sequence one after the other which has helped to keep track of the large cast of characters. Delightfully written and easy to read. Full of Kiwi slang and te reo! Wonderful to be able to relate so easily to stories because they are set in New Zealand.

This is the third novel by Catherine Robertson set in Gabriel’s Bay, a fictious New Zealand town. There’s a large cast of characters and a number of plot lines to keep track of, Staid Dr G’s romance with activist Emma; local body politics, domestic violence, an overseas development threatening a community tourist attraction. It helps to have read the previous novels, but there is a list of characters which is somewhat helpful.

Despite some of the more serious subject matter, the book is easy to read and light hearted. It’s a very NZ story - lots of Te Reo Māori, kiwi slang, familiar characters. It’s like a nice warm bath😊

I enjoyed this in the end, but found it a struggle to get into. So many characters and trying to remember who's who was overwhelming initially. I'm pleased I persevered because it came together and had a great ending (if not a little strange with the cat as the narrator).

Really loved this, especially more use of Maori language and customs. It could seem odd the dropping in and out of Maori and English, but having watched 'Casketeers' since the beginning I've seen that is how it happens in NZ. all our favourites are back, though I would have liked Kerry's parents to return. It is funny how some reviews say they've been to Gabriel's Bay when it doesn't exist (though I always imagine Tokamaru Bay on the rugged and isolated East Cape) hopefully we'll see more of the inhabitants, and some more babies, soon.
