D-Day is a month away. Berlin still expects the Allied landing to be in the Pas de Calais region, but the Normandy invasion planners have a surprise for them. Tactical intelligence on German naval reactions is needed during the early hours of Operation Neptune, the naval portion of the Allied invasion, Operation Overlord. Navy Captain Tony Romella and a small contingent of radio intercept operators are covertly inserted into the Normandy region before D-Day to provide this critical intelligence. Romella’s strategic location gives rise to being tasked by London with impromptu and perilous additional missions with the OSS and French Resistance. When Romella’s missions are complete, returning to London is blocked by formidable Wehrmacht forces that stubbornly defend positions behind the Allied beachhead in the Normandy region. Romella’s choice is to wait weeks for the Allied forces to secure the Normandy area, risking discovery and certain execution, or embark on a hazardous trek to safety.
My naval career intersected the skillful author’s naval career without us ever meeting. I am familiar with several of the geographic settings in the book series of Tony’s wide and dangerous travel adventures. The geographical references and my career experiences gave me a dimension to the 6-volume story that civilians readers may not experience; they should enjoy the stories as I have because universal truths permeate the pages in each chapter. A typo or two scattered minimally distracted not from my total enjoyment. The comment that associated the US Army the USA configuration of BOMBEs is an eye opener, curious, and worthy of my investigation. The “Code Girls” at Arlington Hall and the Friedman Army era are familiar. The BOMBE a surprise.
This was an outstanding series and as they say all good things must come to an end. Each of these books were well plotted, researched and had quite a bit of mystery to them. The characters were suberb.
I have just finished the last of the series and they were all great. If you know about the war this still takes you deeper in. If you don't read them and learn about our heroes and get a glimpse of why we are free and why we should stay free. Our military people are to be honored and respected. Thank you every military person who served is serving or who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
This final book does an admirable job of wrapping up Tony Romella's career but I really hated for it to end. I loved the way the author worked key historical people, places, and military actions of World War II seamlessly into the life of the main character. This series has something for everyone and I highly recommend it.
