“Dark Elements: Forge” is the fifth and second to last instalment in the “Dark Elements” series by Luke Davids. A dystopian thriller series evolving around Detective Atticus Cornwall and his world.

This is a six parts serialized story, each book (part) has a length of about 70 pages, and is a fast-paced, action-packed read, that grows darker with new instalments. The books are been released in a short time span, which helps to highlight the serialized element of the narrative, comparable with a good Netflix dystopian series, but instead of ‘chilling and Netflix’, ‘thrilling while reading’ would be a much more accurate description for “Dark Elements”.

“Dark Elements: Forge” begins on a high note, things are looking really well for the rebellion, which seems to be conquering Chicago at a fast pace. But, as Duke has already learnt in multiple occasion, nothing easy is ever long-lasting, and this last tragedy might be the one Duke is not able to come back from, or at least not fully.

An inciting look into a dystopian society, in which people are strictly divided into those who have been chipped and those who have remained unchipped. The chipped run the place and enjoyed all privileges, while the unchipped survive at the will of the former. A premise that that feels all the more thrilling with the realization that, at the core, this world is not that different from our very own.

Overall I really enjoyed this installment, it felt a bit slower paced than the others but in a good way. Upon reflection I think the reason it felt slower was due to the additional character development and individual character storylines. In my eyes this is a great reason to slow down the pace. It worked really well and I was still hooked. Of course in between there are scenes of bloodshed and action as always.
There is an amazing twist in this one that I wasn't expecting that I bl**dy loved! It does pose more questions than it answers but leaves you wondering what the hell is going to happen next! The twist is deeply rooted in a certain character's backstory and now I can't wait to find out more.
This one is definitely the most heart-wrenching of the 5 I've read, there are at least 2 moments you will be exclaiming expletives out loud as you read.
The mech units are such a cool idea and really add to the futuristic sci-fi vibe. They're more integral to this installment but I'm looking forward to seeing them more in the next.
Will definitely be reading the 6th book shortly.

Where there is Hope
So, so quickly coming towards the end, book 6 soon please.
Some are lost, some were lost but may be found.
OK, so the rebels progress, the city waits and it starts to kick off.
I need to know the result.

I hope that when we have the result we can find out what happens next.

I am still enjoying this and looking forward to the next read, still quite a quick read but maybe that is because I am enjoying it so much.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
