Even when Enyo is using it."

Etienne has lost his grasp of magic and must forge new strength to face the troubles ahead. The road is rife with danger, but the rewards are a chance to save Alphonse and find new friends along the way.

Bound by promises they may not be able to keep, Etienne and Delyth are forced to reassess their plans when a new foe comes to light. This story confronts but does not endorse nonconsensual contact (not sex).

What readers are

”Vassal and Goddess both provide incredible stories of growth, love, and family. Through it all, I have found the most central part of the Call of Calamity series to be the characters themselves. You’ll find yourself rooting for them, yelling at them, and at times crying for them. This character-driven story introduces the reader to the beautiful and sometimes harsh world of Illygad that is just as vibrant as the characters themselves.” -Lauren L.

This was an epic journey—not only an adventure, but also something that made me really think about social norms and taught me along the way. There were unexpected twists, unique characters, tons of imagination, and never knew what was around the corner. It kept me on my toes and throws formulaic writing out the window. I really got invested with the characters and actually got mad when I thought some of my favorite characters were in trouble! Magic, risk, loyalty, fearless service along with a wild ride.” -Kat R.

3.75 ⭐ (rounded up to four) CW: violence, blood, death, child death

Goddess by Liv Savell and Sterling D'Este is book two in the Call of Calamity duology. I have really been enjoying these authors, and the way they write relationships and keep their casts diverse. This sequel fell a little flat for me though. Possible spoilers for Vassal ahead.

We follow Etienne and Delyth after the events of book one. They set out to find Enyo with a new companion, a clanswoman named Meirin. All Delyth wants is to get Alphonse back, and Etienne wants to get rid of his guilt for his part in all of this. Meanwhile, Enyo and Va'al are trying to bring back more gods so they get their original bodies back and not be trapped in human vassals. Although the gods are enemies to Etienne and Delyth, they eventually realize they must work together to defeat an even greater threat.

I really liked the addition of Meirin in this book, I think we needed another character in the group since Alphonse wasn't around really. I wish she hadn't just gone away near the end. I would have liked to see her come back around at some point. She ended up just being a plot device. Etienne finally got better as a character. He had some major growth. I just wanted Delyth to be happy! Giant warrior woman with wings deserves that! I didn't love the epilogue, but the short stories at the end really helped.

My major issue with this book was the pacing. It was way too slow for a sequel. It was fine for the first books to be slow paced since it was more of a quest story where we got to know the characters, but I think this book needed to be faster paced with less focus on everyone walking everywhere. I also have an older edition, and I know the authors recently made some significant changes, so that might have fixed whatever I'm complaining about. Still a solid story with great characters, and I'm looking forward to more from these authors.

A FANTASTIC sequel!! This is probably one of my favorite high fantasy series. I adore getting to know the characters from the first book more and getting to know new characters!! I think you can read Vassal and Goddess as a duology but I know more stories are coming with the same characters. 10/10 would recommend this fantastic queer fantasy!

This is literally what reading is all about. The intensity of disbelief I had at the end brought me to tears. I could not believe what an amazing job the writers did on this and can't wait to read everything they ever write.

Delyth, the winged warrior, is determined to defeat the goddess Enyo and see the return of her love Alphonse. But a greater threat even than Enyo is rising, and opposing sides must work together to save the land.

This is the second and final book in the Call of Calamity series and it does not disappoint. I absolutely loved the first one and this one is just as good. Ettiene got better character development in this one. He often seemed shoved in the first book, but in this one we get a deeper look at his character. I ended up growing very attached and liking him.

This one also deepens the complexities of the gods, showing their softer sides and familial and romantic bonds. This was interesting and created very complex, inhuman characters that were fascinating to read about.

There was so much emotion in this book and I got so invested in Delyth’s attempts to get Alphonse back. Their romance is so sweet. I also liked how the ending felt realistic. You get a real sense of loss from the events of the story, and even if most things turn out okay there’s still heavy consequences and you can see how the characters are forever changed.

There were two short stories exploring Delyth’s life after the events of the series. These were great additions and I loved seeing more of her, plus a look at what happens to Ettiene.

This is a wonderful queer fantasy indie duology and I encourage everyone to check out the books.

Goddess had me from the beginning. Winged warrioress Delyth and the healer mage Alphonse and my fave Enyo the earthy goddess of chaos plus a band of gods and goddesses continue the extraordinary adventure that left us wanting for more in the first book “Vassal”. I adore all of the different flavors of personalities joined on a common quest. And who knew “ Death “ was so entertaining? Inclusive indie authors making a difference 🌈♥️🌎

Really enjoyed this queer fantasy sequel by Liv Savell and Sterling D'Este!

Goddess picks up right after the big ending of book one, and I enjoyed reading about these characters again, and how they interact to try and save their friend, especially since they weren't very close in book one. The pacing was a bit slow towards the middle, and I felt like the book was a bit too long, but overall was invested in the story.

This ended the series well, and everything felt tied up in a satisfactory way, but still leaving the lore of this world open! A engaging queer high fantasy book with a lovely romance.

I loved Goddess! It’s a stunning continuation of Vassal, with faster pacing and the same beautiful attention to character development. The end had me sobbing, but in a good way. This is definitely something you should pick up if you’re looking for an inclusive, lgbt+ friendly, character-driven fantasy!!!

magnificent

A beautiful epic series. Gods, undying love, brutality, loyalty and friendship. I would have love to have read more in detail on how both Delythe and Alphonse returned to eachother but the characterization of each Gods and each human characters were filled with such high emotions that leaves you wanting more.

Satisfying conclusion to Calamity

I enjoyed this series a great deal. The authors successfully portrayed the common truth of no true evil, just different points of view with their own truths to hold on to and explore.

A book review is here! I would first like to thank the authors for sending me a copy of the book for my honest review.

.

Here is a book that I was completely surprised by. I remember reading Vassal and being completely blown away by it. From characters to plot to setting I just fell in love with the series.

This sequel just solidified something I already knew after reading Vassal; that this is a series that I wanna follow and keep reading.

I absolutely adore the characters and I find them to be the strongest part of both books, but especially Goddess. There is just so much that happens and the characters actually react in ways that doesn’t seem weird or strange, but ways that everyday people would react.

The epic-ness though of Goddess far outshines Vassals. Everything just seems larger in this book and the plot is where you can see that take shape. To avoid spoilers I won’t going into too much detail; but in Vassal we were following a very specific plot point and in Goddess we are introduced to a much grander plot along with side stories that are mingling all together. It makes the journey feel so much bigger and I love it.

Overall, I highly recommend this book and Vassal too.

Loved Goddess! It was a worthy sequel of Vassal!

It made good on the expectations of Vassal's ending, enlarging the plot and raising the stakes. As with Vassal, the use of language is wonderful, creating great descriptions as well as lovely and well-crafted dialogue.

The characters are the greatest strength of the book. Each character is complicated with strengths, weaknesses and desires. Their relationships feel real and important, be it a friendship or something more conflict-ridden. They hold true to their own personalities, and change and grow in natural ways. The progress of the characters is a true gem, making the characters feel real and one can truly understand them. The changes are both big, the growth in personality, or they can be small like the understanding of a new perspective. Both are rewarding when they come to be shown. Every character has their own journey in this book, every one a rewarding and interesting one even if my favourites has to be Alphonse, Etienne, Delyth and Enyo (I know, most of the main character's that... but that's because they're great!). There is so much to love about every character and their unique journey, their unique personality and mix of strength and weakness.

The story and plot itself is larger than the one of Vassal. Thus it is also somewhat different, though not in a bad way. I want to avoid spoilers, but it is an epic journey from start to finish, with a more personal quest on the one hand, and a world-important plot on the other. The characters have to weigh one against the other, with important consequences for everyone. The story hooked me from start to finish. This finds me with a second great strength, the ever-constant progress of the book. Every chapter something of interest takes place, something that brings the plot, characters, relations and world the forefront, and taking it a step further along. It is constantly on the move, though always at a good pace with plenty of space for the various sub-plots of character and relationships.

The mix of these strengths brings me to the third. The characters, their reactions and emotions that too brought out emotions in me as a reader. Lovely, powerful and sometimes heart-wrenching emotions are described in fine and stellar detail. It runs off the page in the perfect manner, making me as a reader feel everything from sorrow, anxiety and hopelessness to hope, amusement and happiness. I enjoyed this a great deal!

I could find a thousand more things to say, as the book explores complex topics like depression, death and relationships as well, all in a healthy and worthy manner. To summarize, it is a well-written book that is well-worth a read. It was exciting, sad, happy, and thought-provoking! I can't wait for the next book personally!
