What is fate? Destined? Providence? Irreversible? I don’t understand. Only know that I can’t bear to see your hair turn white before your time, a sword to end a love that has yet to begin.
This is a f/f retelling of a wuxia story, Baifa Monv Zhuan. In the original story, Nichang is merely the tragic love interest of the heroic protagonist. In this one, the main character, Zhu'er (a girl who transmigrates from the modern world), meets Nichang as a child and falls in love with her. She vows to herself to save and protect Nichang.
The first part of the novel follows Zhu'er and Nichang's childhood, and then the events of the original story happen. I haven't read far because the translation is unfinished.
The translation is fantastic and does a great job at making the story really atmospheric. I was engrossed in the small world of Zhu'er and Lian'er (Nichang). This story reminds me of Clear and Muddy Loss of Love in its characterization - the characters feel like real people you would know. A lot of Chinese webnovels, especially the bl, have characters that are comedic or dramatic and they don't feel real. I really enjoyed this and plan to try and finish the story in Chinese.
This is an exquisitely crafted, slow-burn narrative of transformative love that will take you on a profound emotional journey, leaving you breathless and deeply moved. A classic piece! A must read for fans of GL and wuxia enthusiasts alike!
She, a rock, dares to disrupt the natural flow of the calm river, yet fate, like water, is fluid, soft, and yielding. "What is soft is strong". Can she truly change someone else's fate? Can they both handle the consequences?
Zhu Xian(Zhu'er), burdened by a tragic past, is reincarnated into the world of martial arts rivalries, political intrigues, and personal vendettas. Despite being ordinary, she defies destiny & seeks to alter Lian Nichang's sorrowful fate through sheer will. She's a compassionate & lovable character. Her internal conflicts & emotional turmoil make her deeply relatable and human.
Lian Nichang's(Lian'er) combination of strength & vulnerability are masterfully depicted. Her complex character is richly developed. Her cold, immovable, & domineering exterior masks a deeply vulnerable human.
Equally well-rounded & lovable characters are master Ling Muhua, Tie Shanhu, & Jiu Niang.
I realized the reason why Zhu'er often seems indifferent to most people is that she sees them merely as characters from a book. Only Lian'er and their master—the people dearest to her—are whom she sees as real. The rest are inconsequential. But in the end, only Lian'er truly anchors her to this world. For instance, after the Wudang incident, she She's so metal.
FN: • Angsty but with a HE • The MC & FL's relationship didn't progress to a romantic relationship until they reached the marriageable age of that era (the author handled this very delicately).
(I read the remaining chapters on the official website, JJWXC, as they're free. I avoided MTL translations because they're gibberish and headache-inducing)
