MEET THE MADRIGALS: A magically gifted family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a miraculous house, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. This vibrant behind-the-scenes book explores Walt Disney Animations Studio's latest big-screen adventure, Encanto, featuring colorful concept art, storyboards, character designs, and insights from the creative minds behind this beautiful film.
A končím. Lebo by som šla pozerať Encanto 😁
A gorgeous book. If you love Encanto, you'll love this book. 176 pages (not 64 like Goodreads says) of the beautiful artwork created during development by various artists, with titbits about the inspirations drawn from Colombian culture. My favourites were by Lorelay Bové.
It took me a bit to read this book since I really wanted to take in everything in the book and put aside how I feel about the actual movie. That being said, I love how colorful everything in this art book is. I enjoyed seeing the promo sketches/designs for every character in the movie but, especially for the Madrigal family members. Another really interesting thing about the art book, was reading about scenes and even characters that didn’t make it into the final version of the Encanto movie. It was also helpful to see that certain parts of the movie got their own sections in the art book.
it's always so fun to see the process behind such beautiful films such as encanto. the character sketches and designs were so colorful and beautiful and detailed, and i found myself really in love with some of pepa's original designs, as well as isabela's!
the film was so wonderful, and so was this lovely behind the scenes tour that really gave us a glimpse into the world of encanto and the madrigal family.
No podía fallar.
Do you love Encanto? I do!! I stumbled across this book and I am so glad that I did. Reading this book enhanced the movie for me, and upon watching it after reading this book the world of Encanto felt even more immersive. The vivid colours and illustrations in this book are spectacular and it is neat to see the process of the character and story development. It also gives fun tidbits, like the characters having symbols on their clothing that represent their powers (ex Luisa having barbells on skirt). This was a throughly enjoyable experience reading this book and I would highly recommend it.

I really loved reading this and getting able to see the initial concept was and what the artists felt was the main purpose of the story and the characters. I’m sad that the book didn’t get into much depth into the characters of Pepa and Julieta and the other cousins, but I’m thankful anyways they compiled these beautiful pieces and creations for the public to see a little bit of the whole pre, production and post of the movie!
I have a few art books and this is one of the more enjoyable ones. I was pleased to see there was so much 2d art and pencil sketches and paintings and 'comic strip' scenes and very little on the 3d aspects. I was worried that the Art of Frozen II might become the standard for Disney's 3D movie art books; thrilled to see I was wrong.
English Encanto is one of my favourite movies; I hope it wins lots of awards and gets the attention it deserves. And, maybe one day, hopefully, Disney will make a movie about Argentina. This book is perfect for fans of Disney, Encanto, cinema and animation in general. I recommend it to everyone, but specially if you're an artist, you'll love it. The drawings are beautiful, colorful, alive and creative. The rejected ideas, deleted charaters, cut scenes and everything that could've been is super interesting. It includes quotes from the producers and writers that give each drawing further context. In general, it's perfect and I love it. The best part is that you can read it for free online!!
For one, this book made me fall in love with Lorelay Bové as an artist. Her work is amazing, and her art for Encanto is no exception. As a person who loves art with bold, vibrant colors, I couldn’t not fall in love with it, and with this book in general. I pretty much like the style for everyone who contributed to it. My reason for giving this book four stars instead of five is that I would have liked a deeper insight into some of the characters, although I understand that being so many of them it was pretty much impossible. I especially would have liked to know more about Dolores, but literally the only thing the book says about her is that the work team had their priorities set on making her hair right for her ethnicity. Being the character I understand less in the Madrigal family, I would have liked to know more about how she came to be and why she got her specific gift. The second aspect I did not like much of this book was the foreword. I found it to be pretty gaunt. To summarize it, it said that the goal of the work team of this movie was to make a movie set in Colombia, and to have it centered on a family. To me, it felt like they said the only reason behind making this movie was making a profit out of it. Maybe Disney magic and creativity are really fading like some say they are?
What has become one of my new favourite disney films, I'm glad that with the Oscar nominations I was able to read this free online and I love the love and attention that was put into every tiny detail of this movie. I'm usually a sucker for behind the scenes looks and art books for movies and tv shows but this just made me realise why I love this movie so much. Apart from the beautiful colours, animation and life that this movie has it is also predominantly a character driven story told through the lens of magical realism to help express the emotions of the characters and what they convey... which is literally my favourite thing to consume in media 😅 So thanks disney, I was excited to watch it when it came out and it was better than I could have dreamed. Looking forward to whatever they come up with next, though this is a tough act to follow.
I got this ebook back during the Encanto craze when Disney decided to give away free digital copies to download. I'm forever fascinated with the way Disney animated films change and evolve into the stories we watch and rewatch today. The art in this is gorgeous and it almost makes me want to buy the hardcover so I can look at every detail and have it proudly displayed in my collection. It's a must if you enjoyed the movie as much as I do.
Also if everything in this book is 1000% true, then we have Lin Manuel Miranda to thank for suggesting the idea of using Latin music, specifically Colombian music, for the film's soundtrack thus giving us a Colombia-based Disney film. And as a Colombian, I thank him for that.
A beautiful book consisting of sketches, concept art, storyboards, and character designs as well as insight to Walt Disney Animation Studios multi-year process of bringing the film Encanto to life. Enjoyed seeing how much information from their research trip to Columbia they took into consideration for each aspect of the film and continuing the representation efforts by bringing staff members of those cultures into the mix. The artwork is gorgeous and helps you become aware of details that don't always show in the fast-paced animation. A superb book to check out whether you are a fan of Encanto, an inspiring animation designer, or needing inspiration for your own character creation.
After watching Encanto (2021), I have been immensely enticed by the art, music, and most especially how the core focus of the story was portrayed. With the release of this book, I was able to greatly appreciate the development, inspiration, and effort of the whole production to make the movie a successful feat of unspoken struggles, conflicts, and challenges surrounding ourselves in and out the realm of family.
Indeed, a comforting read and perusal on how Encanto was developed, and inspired through storyboards, sketches, and illustrations.
What a wonderful art book! I loved the movie, so it was great to get more insight into the making of it, and to drink in all the beautiful art created by the artists who worked in Encanto.
I do wish we had gotten a closer look into Bruno, my favorite character, but it was a great book nonetheless, and really makes it shine all the love and care that went into the movie. Now I really want to visit Colombia!
If you'd like to read it as well, Disney's making it available to read for free online to promote it for the Oscars!
