Their love survived his accident, but can it survive the long, hard road to recovery?

Tyler Murphy had his life all planned out: finish college, go back to Sugar Pine as his dad’s able-bodied business partner, and most importantly, marry Rebecca Colson. But a fall from a roof leaves him less than able-bodied, and the pain he suffers as a result goes beyond the physical. Wrestling with his new disability seems manageable only by way of the pharmacy. Which is fine…until the refills run out and he’s denied a new prescription.

Rebecca Colson can’t wait for the day she’ll finally become Mrs. Rebecca Murphy. Tyler’s accident and resulting amputation are traumatic hurdles on the road to marital bliss but nothing they can’t overcome together—until Rebecca stumbles onto Tyler’s secret and approaches his family for help. Suddenly, the love of her life turns cold. In his eyes, her betrayal is unforgivable, and just like that, their hopes and dreams disintegrate.

Becca finds herself facing a future she doesn’t recognize—one where each step forward is a step away from the future she’d planned with Tyler. When a recovered Tyler finally seeks her out, he’s not sure he deserves another chance with her—not after the way he broke her heart. Becca is equally uncertain that Tyler has room in his new, very different life, for her. Is it too late to restore their relationship, or will their stubborn love forge a new path for a future together?

Stubborn Love is book 5 in the Murphy Brothers Stories; Christian novels full of romance and redemption. Don't miss this family of seven brothers as they navigate through life, faith, and love.

Jennifer Rodewald is passionate about the Word of God and the powerful vehicle of story. Four kids and her own personal superman make her home in southwestern Nebraska delightfully chaotic.

Born in Colorado, she experienced both the seclusion of rugged mountain living and the busy streets of a Denver suburb during her growing up years. Somewhere in the middle of college, she married a Husker and found her way back to the quiet lifestyle of a rural area, which suits just fine.

Blessed with a robust curiosity, Jen loves to research. Whether she’s investigating the history of a given area, the biography of a Christian icon, or how nature declares the glory of God, her daily goal is to learn something new. Aiming to live with boundless enthusiasm, her creed is vision, pursuit, and excellence.

Jen lives and writes in a lovely speck of a town where she watches with amazement while her children grow up way too fast, gardens, and marvels at God’s mighty hand in everyday life.

'Their love might not be enough against the unidentified monster lurking in the shadows. The thought shook her to the core and made her want to weep.'

Jennifer Rodewald brings us the fifth novel in her Murphy Brothers series. I love this family. True to the core, every single one of them. But they have had to traverse some mighty difficult terrain in their lives. Here is Tyler's story. Tyler had his life down to a tee: he'd finish college, go back home to work with his dad in Murphy Builds, their construction business. He'd marry Becca and they'd build a life together. Then a fall from a roof destroys his plans. He now struggles with a horrible disability as well as a pain medication addiction. Then his life spirals out of control in ways he never could have thought would happen.

'Only God, Becca. Only God. Give this to Him. He is an expert at turning ugly into beautiful.'

Becca looked forward eagerly to the day she became Tyler Murphy's wife. But she doesn't even feel she knows him anymore. Becca makes a decision that she hopes will help Tyler, but it only drives her and him further away from each other. Now she is faced with making a life that she never wanted to happen.

Rodewald is incredibly adept at creating characters and stories that burrow down deep into the reader's heart. These characters go through so much, and sometimes I find myself wishing I could pray for them! But God is a master at redemption and pulling healing through even the most desperate of situations. This series is incredibly deep and powerful and a testament to that redemption and grace that only comes from God. I am enjoying it so very much and I can highly recommend it. And there are two brothers left, so I get to enjoy even more. Sit back and watch Rodewald work and come away with a heart full.

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. I was not expected to leave a positive review and the opinion here is completely my own.

Stubborn Love by Jennifer Rodewald is a delightful contemporary Christian novel and the fifth book in the Murphy Brothers series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces.
This book reveals the importance of trusting God completely. In the good times we praise Him. In the bad times we praise Him because God is good and can be trusted even when life is bad.
God walks beside us in all the seasons of life. In our anger and our pain we may not see Him but that does not mean He left us alone for He promised to never leave us nor forsake us.
There is the theme of courage. Courage is often just doing it afraid.
There are some who seem fearless. Sometimes fearless equates to reckless with disastrous consequences.
We all have dreams. When life throws us curve balls, sometimes our dreams must change.
The theme of addiction to prescription drugs is sensitively portrayed. This is dangerous because when they control our lives, we find ourselves spinning out of control and becoming someone we do not want to be. In order to beat our addictions we must want to get better and seek help.
I loved the idea of battle cards. These are cards where we write portions of scripture. At times of hardship or crossroads, we need to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness and promises as we read His Word.
The characters were well drawn and realistic. I loved three year old Fiona whose mannerisms were perfectly captured by Jennifer Rodewald.
Stubborn Love was a charming read and very powerful as it was grounded in the promises of God. I love this Murphy Brothers series.
I will leave you with my favourite quote:
“He {God} is an expert with turning ugly into beautiful.”
I received a free book from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Stubborn Love was another great one from Jennifer Rodewald. This emotional story really tugged at my heartstrings. I loved visiting the Murphy Brothers again, and even though this is book five in the series, it can totally stand alone.

I really appreciate the way Rodewald brings a story, and the characters in it, to life. There's such an authenticity to them I'll sometimes forget I'm reading about fictional characters. It all feels so genuine and grounded in reality.

This time around, the topic of addiction is addressed in a realistic, thoughtful, and compassionate way. It was hard to watch a favorite character struggle with this, but with it being such a big problem in our world today, I appreciated the spotlight this put on the issue.

Tyler had a tough road to traverse, and he didn't always handle things well. His attitude in the beginning, while understandable considering all he was dealing with, was really heart-wrenching to witness. I wanted to hug him and shake some sense into him all at the same time. The journey he went on, while not easy, was such a great testimony!

Becca was an easily likable character. Steadfast, brave, strong. She didn't always believe she was all those things, but she really embodied them.

I loved the spiritual message woven throughout these pages about trusting God. No matter what we face, good, bad, everything in between, He's there for us. He's got things well in hand. We don't need to worry about a thing. We may not always understand His plans, but there's a purpose for everything. He's got it all under control. What a great reminder!

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

This second-chance romance takes the reader right through the tough stuff that the genre typically leaves out. In doing so, we see the full cycle of Tyler and Becca’s relationship, from a deep but untested love to heartbreak and loss, to mature faith and commitment.

All of the Murphy Brothers have some level of faith to fall back on, thanks to their upbringing. Tyler goes through the wringer to solidify his faith and restore the trust he’s broken in nearly every relationship after an injury leads to addiction.

The book leans heavily on Scripture, and highlights a beautiful and fruitful practice of gratitude for all things, in every moment, the good and the not-so-good. That and trusting in God. (Gratitude and trust build on one another.)

Another solid addition to the Murphy Brothers series!

Stubborn Love by Jennifer Rodewald is such a great book. I've read several of her stories and this one just spoke to my heart in so many ways. What I love about her books is the lessons her characters learn, and some learn it the very hard way. This book dealt with addictions. Which seem to me to be rampant these days. Although, I've never been addicted to drugs or alcohol, my father was an alcoholic. So I could totally understand the hurt and heartache of the family. And as in the usual Rodewald way, she shows God's way with inspiring scriptures that shows gratitude and also hope for the future.
This book is my favorite so far in the series. You could read this as a standalone if you haven't read the others. I recommend all of her books.

Stubborn Love really seemed to take a different direction than the other books in this series, and that was the subject of addiction and how it can and does affect not only the person addicted but those who love that particular person. Tyler loses his leg in an accident and needs pain meds to help him adapt to his new life without his whole leg. Becca Colson is Tyler's fiancee, and she is committed to staying with him throughout this ordeal.

I've never been addicted to anything so I may be amiss in saying this, but I thought the emotions and all the aspects found in addictions were well portrayed here. Tyler lost everything dear to him until he was willing to admit to his weaknesses. I would've liked some aspects to be more expanded on as some of them seemed short and tidy, but all in all, I really liked getting to read Tyler's story.

What a tough road for Tyler and Becca. Following a work related injury, Tyler struggles to find purpose in his life and finds relief in opioids. I was glad that the time span for this novel was years. That made Tyler's journey more realistic. Nice tease at the end for Brandon's story, which is up next.

Stubborn Love is a beautiful story of the strength of love and the good God can orchestrate through brokenness. With Rodewald’s signature depth and elements of women’s fiction blended into this contemporary romance, Tyler and Becca become characters to root for and enjoy as they find their way back to each other.

I appreciate how the sensitive yet extremely relevant topic of addiction is handled within this story. Tyler’s difficulties and experiences are portrayed as relatable with raw honesty and an element of hope as his recovery progresses. His supportive combination of family and friends exemplify what grace should look like lived out in the body of Christ — a heart-touching truth for Tyler and an example for the reader.

One of my favorite things about Becca and Tyler’s characters is each of their journeys to restoration. They are separate yet intertwined because of their choices, brokenness, and healing. Gratitude plays a big role in Tyler’s story, and trust for Becca. Biblical truths are included as a natural, encouraging part of their lives. While both of them struggle with miscommunication in different ways (as expected in romance to add tension and conflict), I like that Rodewald chooses to play out their missteps and faults as realistic, dealing with truth and honesty at just the right time for her protagonists.

There are many other little things to love about Stubborn Love: cupcakes + Fiona, brothers & catching up with the Murphys, gratitude, the perspective time brings, the wisdom of friends. I’m looking forward to TWO more Murphy brothers books!

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy. This is my honest review.

I knew by the book blurb that I wouldn't get as into this one as the others in the series so I basically skimmed it so I could get any family news I needed to move on. I will say the messages at the end were really good, even though they did seem to go on and on and on. I was disappointed that it took Tyler so long to get around to apologizing to Becca. Even after they reconciled, it was several conversations before the apology ever came. Yeah... That needed to happen years ago, dude. I couldn't really root for him because of that.

This is a great read. I love how Rodewald writes Christian love stories. She doesn't write a typical formulated romance which is great but in this case I felt like the book was overly long. If you are a reader who always feels like a good book is too short then you will love this one. I really liked Tyler and Becca's story. I like all the Murphy brother's stories. The romance and real life situations are tender and very relatable. I am ready to get my hands on Brandon's book. Fake Engagement..... should be fun!

Woo wee! The first half of this book was tough to get through. The emotions were painfully vivid and I personally had to set the story down for a time to process it in my heart. I'm so glad I picked it back up because the redemptive, gratitude focused conclusion is worth every hurt and sorrow. These Murphys have come alive on the page and I highly recommend getting to know them!

Wow! This might be my favorite of her books. It starts out with an issue that plagues our world today. Addiction to pain-killers is something that can so easily happen. I love Tyler and Becca's journey! My favorite thing is the way that Becca learned to have Scripture always with her. Oh, and I wonder if Brandon's story is next. Very, very, well done!

The Murphy family returns, and this time, one of the middles is in the spotlight. Jennifer Rodewald never fails to bring an emotionally wrenching and compelling story filled with messages of faith and healing to the page.

Tyler has his future planned out—graduate from college, work with his dad, and marry the girl he loves. An accident and addiction change all of that. Rodewald handles Tyler’s addiction to pain killers with truth but also compassion. Readers see the change in Tyler—the excuses, the ugliness of attitude, the pushing people away—but also the pain and disillusion his injury brings him. And the heartbreak.

And then comes the healing. Not only of Tyler’s body but of his soul as he leans into God. Becca is also healing as she charts a new course for her future.

There was so much to love about this book, from Lauren and Becca’s friendship to little Fiona to the romance. But the absolute best, most beautiful part of this book was Tyler’s changed outlook and response to difficulties. As he learns to praise God in gratitude, this faith grows, he becomes an inspiration to others and a better man than he was before his accident. Stubborn Love is a testament to how God can take what we view as the worst event in our lives and turn it into the greatest gift He gives us because it brings us closer to Him.

I wasn't as much of a fan of this book as I was of the others in this series. One of the younger Murphy brothers, still a college student, becomes addicted to opioids after an accident at work and resorts to secrecy and stealing. His fiance, Rebecca, is the big loser in this situation after she discovers what he's been hiding and sets up an intervention. It was a good story of addiction and recovery.

A must-read story of brokenness and healing

It is easy to trust in God’s goodness and love when things go well but it can be so very difficult when they don’t. In Stubborn Love, Jennifer Rodewald explores how tragedy and loss can drive a man with faith to doubt everything he had believed in a tender and compassionate manner.

Tyler did everything with his whole heart, including loving Becca. While I really, really liked him, part of me was overwhelmed by his larger-than-life exuberance and adventurous spirit! That made me admire Becca’s courage in following him on his adventures despite her own fears.

His grief after the accident and loss of his leg was natural. So were his anger and desire for relief from the pain and suffering he experienced. His problem was how he attempted to deal with it. I grieved with him and was heartbroken by these things! And I cheered when he was finally forced to see himself for what he had become and learned to turn his life back over to the God who loves him. Learning to fight his spiritual battles with gratitude, following the prescription for peace and joy found in Philippians 4, transformed him and flipped his life right side up again.

With the help of loving friends, Becca began her new life, not as Mrs. Murphy as she had planned, but moving forward nevertheless. She learned to rely daily on her “battle cards”, scripture verses to help set her focus where it belonged, on the truths that never change regardless of our circumstances. They prepared her heart for the spiritual battle fought daily.

As I have come to expect from this author, Stubborn Love is a multi-layered story dealing with loss, love, and faith in a way that was realistic, encouraging, and filled with spiritual truths applicable to everyone’s life.

If you enjoy Christian fiction that encourages you and challenges you in your faith, be sure to read Stubborn Love and the entire Murphy Brothers series. Each story builds on the others and yet is complete on its own.

As with the other books in the Murphy Brothers series, Stubborn Love is an extremely powerful story that can be read as a stand alone novel if you haven’t read the other books in the series.

I loved the way the author took us on the full journey that Becca and Tyler went on, from happily in love, to trauma, to their lowest point, through part of recovery, and finally to the possibility of a second chance.

It was easy to see, from the outside looking in, how pain and unrealistic expectations allowed Tyler to fall into what seemed like a necessary solution to his problems, but was really an addiction that was changing him from the inside out. It was interesting to see that in some ways he was the same person, but there was another part of him that was beginning to lie, steal, and hide what he was doing to protect himself. I could feel the pain that Becca was going through as she made the tough decision that would lead to Tyler’s recovery, but ultimately doom their relationship.

Later in the book, it was so encouraging to see how both Becca and Tyler had changed. Fortunately for both of them, they each had a support network of friends who helped them to heavily rely on God to get them through the tough things. They had healed in different ways, but there were still things that they struggled with. Their reunion and their reconnecting felt very realistic.

This was such a wonderful story and I wish it could have even had another chapter or two, or an epilogue! I wasn’t ready for it to end because I was so emotionally invested in Becca and Tyler’s lives. I love that this author delves into difficult topics and points to God through it all. Now I am anxiously anticipating another Murphy Brothers story!

Tyler and Rebecca were set to be married, when a careless accident changed everything. While their engagement survived Tyler's injury, his resulting reliance on pain meditation turns him into a totally different man, and when Rebecca is forced to take a difficult step, he refuses to accept her actions and ends their engagement. When he gets his act together again and they reconnect years later, will love - even stubborn love - be enough to overcome past hurts?

I've read and enjoyed every book in the series so far, so I have high expectations when new books are released. Fortunately, I've never been disappointed yet! This was another heart-warming story of struggles and overcoming, and I loved it. It was particularly nice to see Tyler slowly come to realise how much he'd asked of Rebecca earlier, and push himself to match her courage. To those who have read previous books in the series, this is a great continuation, and you'll hear a little of some previous couples, so what are you waiting for? For those who haven't, you're missing a lot and really should read them! However, this can be read on its own with no problem. All in all, a great book and I'm eager for the next book in the series.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I have loved all Jennifer Rodewald's books and her Murphy Brothers are some of her best. Flawed characters working through their issues - many self caused as in Tyler's case with his addiction to pain killers - not in their own strength but by relying on God. Though this book is book 5 it is easily read as a standalone. I admit Tyler did annoy me in the first part of the book with how he took Becca for granted and was too stubborn to listen to his therapists, rushing his recovery and then relying on pain killers because he did too much too soon - and then his total refusal to admit to his problem. However his long and arduous journey (no quick fixes here) back to a better stronger person than before his accident was incredibly well done. I love how the family supports one another - even when it means tough love. Can't wait until the next books! I received this book as an ARC but this review is my own and definitely this book is a keeper.

Goodness but she’s done it again! This author writes the kind of fiction that wrings you out as you grow — painfully — with the characters. There are so many messages in this book. I’ve never dealt with addiction, or so I thought. But Tyler’s dilemma was much too familiar. He knew to do what is right but evil was present. He battled his flesh just like I do, wanting what he wanted, sometimes without regard to consequences. Isn’t that the human condition and why we all need an extra measure of grace? There are other themes like courage vs fear, giving God control, waiting on his timing, and ultimately, the ability to find a reason to praise Him in all seasons. Reading this book renewed my daily purpose to serve and praise Him in all things. I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Truthfully, I have never been big on series, BUT then I began reading the Murphy Brothers and I have simply loved this series. Each of the brothers has issues and they are real everyday issues and messy.
Jennifer Rodewald writes Tyler's story this time, and Tyler is addicted to living life on the edge and taking his girl Becca with him. And then it all comes crashing down and Tyler has to deal with his addictions in more ways than one and Becca is the one who pulls is all crashing down. This is a story of reconciliation of Tyler with life, with God and with Becca. This story touched me at my core and encouraged me to look for the good hidden in the bad and that is not easy. Thank you Jennifer for the Murphy Brothers and especially for Tyler.

I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of reality and truth in this book. It could be a biography or non fiction then you remember you are reading fiction and following the lives of 9 ( or is it 7?) brothers. I have read these books in order and this one is my favorite so far. A whole lot can be learned from the subjects addressed-addiction, pain pills, loss, accidents, courage, hope, failure, gratitude, Gods faithfulness just to name a few.
My favorite part - “ there’s a verse in Proverbs that says, though the righteous fall 7 times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes… why would a righteous man stumble 7 times, why is he not disqualified from the title righteous after falling so many times? Who is this Godly man? The righteous will live by faith. The godly man will live by faith. When the Bible talks about faith,it’s talking about saving faith, that’s redemption.

I could read this again, it’s that good!
Maybe I’ll continue with book 6!

Even after not seeing each other in three years, they are still in love with the other. Should they say anything?
She's living the life they'd planned, but in another town... and without him.
His new life fits him, but not her.
Now what?

Oh this was an awesome story!
The characters are really well done. The story has genuine tear-jerker moments and a lot of praise and prayers. The drama, trauma, heavy bits of the story are realistic and nothing is heavy-handed.

This was so good. It had me guessing where it was going from the very beginning. Tyler and Becca's story is a very real one. I love the focus on God and giving praise and finding the good in every situation. The anger and the hurt from Tyler and even Brandon is real. I love how Matt and Lauren became protective of Becca and were looking out for her, more than for Matt's own brother. Love these characters. Very Christian, but not over the top. Just right!!

This series is unique and challenging and real. So much pain and a twisty road our characters traverse. It is gritty and tough. Definitely not a lighthearted easy read. But the so much better for it. An incredible story of faithfulness and redemption.

This isn't your typical romance. There are many struggles and obstacles to overcome. Tyler and Becca have a great love for one another, but things don't go as they planned. Can they try again? Will they get a second chance?

I really enjoyed this story. The character development was excellent. The struggles and twists were relatable. It was real life, and not fluff. The Christian message is refreshing. This is a sweet/clean book. I totally recommend it.

Jennifer Rodewald is an amazing author and has once again proven that! Stubborn Love is another book about the Murphy brothers. Tyler feels invincible until a tragic accident changes everything in his life. He finds that he is unable to cope with the pain and the loss without a crutch. The crutch becomes an obsession and his life is spinning out of control. Can the stubborn love of his fiancé and his family help him recover or does it just make him a bitter person. Jennifer keeps the story moving and again demonstrates how Gods love can pull anyone out of the worst situation they can imagine. This is a must read!!!

In this book you read about how your life can change by a unfortunate mistake. Tyler and Becca’s story is truly inspirational and challenging. You will read how addiction and lies can ruin a loving relationship. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

A Very Meaningful Message!

Jennifer Rodewald is a more recent favorite author of mine. She encourages me spiritually through these fiction books. I really appreciate good Christian authors who write what I think of as "gritty" stories reflecting the hardships of real life and how character's attitudes change when they determine to look to God to seek his Plan and not their own. The Murphy Brothers series has been incredible in this regard. Can't wait for the next book!
