“You dare call me traitor? It is you, sir, who is the traitor! You and all your slaver ‘friends’ speak nothing but treasonous sedition …”
It’s spring 1861, and former army captain Nathan Chambers, is on unfamiliar ground; in the center of the swirling politics of the secession crisis, triggered by the election of an unknown Northerner, Abraham Lincoln. While Nathan fights to keep Virginia in the Union, his enemies plot to take the state by force. And when they do, they mean to trigger a war and murder their political rivals; especially one troublesome former army captain!
Meanwhile, Evelyn finds herself swept up in the intrigue of the Richmond upper class. After rescuing a runaway slave, she’s been recruited to help the Underground Railroad. But now her “handlers” want to use her beauty and charm as a weapon to spy for the Union in the coming war. Will she risk Nathan’s love to seduce Southern leaders into giving up their secrets?
And even as Virginia’s secession looms, men from the western side of the mountains plot their own sedition; a split with Richmond to form a new state and fight for Mr. Lincoln!
The Road to the Breaking Series is an epic tale of a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of a deadly precipice: the American Civil War. In Book 3 of the series, Nathan Chambers fights to keep Virginia in the Union as his enemies plot a violent Sedition.
Chris A. Bennett grew up on the shores of Klamath Lake in southeastern Oregon. For a young boy it was a dream world of water, hills, forests, and abundant wildlife. His love for action and adventure morphed into a lifelong love for books when his Mom read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to the family on a long road trip.
It was routine and normal for the family dinner table discussions to involve history, politics, and anything interesting going on in the world. So, when he attended the University of Oregon it seemed perfectly natural (and easy) to study history and political science. But everyone said you couldn't make a living in those fields, so he decided to try his hand at Computer Science. He's been writing professionally, in the software development business for more than 35 years now.
However, Chris's thirst for adventure never faded and he began to live out his love of history onto the pages of his first book, Road to the Breaking. Once he started writing he just couldn't stop and the result is The Road to the Breaking series; an epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster: the American Civil War.
Chris currently lives near Seattle with his wife Patricia. His three adult children Nick, Rachel, and Josh also live in the Puget Sound area.
This book is about the first days and weeks after Fort Sumpter was fired on. People in eastern Virginia had voted to leave the United States. Capt. Chambers had to flee back towards home west of Richmond. My ancestors are from West Virginia and this is the beginning of them breaking away from Virginia.
This series continues to deliver excellent story telling. The title comes from a Native American legend about two tribes at war who “Broke the World.” It's not lost on the reader that the world of 1861 is about to break. This is the third entry in the series and picks up just as secession becomes a reality. The author takes us through the politics and lays out the various factions. The events follow the history as I know it, though there is much more than I was familiar with. The narrative details the East/West split of Virginia just as the Country is split North and South. I was a bit disappointed in that the villainy was so unevenly heaped on the secessionists. Don’t get me wrong, Succession was a huge mistake. But there were people in that camp with noble motives. They simply grew up with a different paradigm. For many Southerners, “States Rights,” was not merely a cover for supporting slavery. Nathan’s view point was only believable because he did not actually grow up on his father’s plantation. He grew up in northern boarding schools and the army. His view that, “It’s just land,” would have been antithetical to those who grew up on the plantations. Even though there is quite a bit of political maneuvering, there is no dearth of action. I was on the edge of my seat hoping help would arrive several times. And I still have hopes for Nathan and Evelyn. I’m breathlessly waiting for Book 4.
Sedition (Road to Breaking book 3) by Chris Bennett is the 3rd instalment in the Road to Breaking series. Having not read any of the previous books I do feel as though I was a little at a loss. Although in the end you worked out who was who, I honestly feel you should read the series. The books don’t work as a standalone.
In Sedition the reader meets back with Nathan Chambers, finding himself on unfamiliar ground where politics is concerned. It’s Spring 1861 and a unknown northerner is running for Presidency, the one and only Abraham Lincoln. While he is busy trying to keep his home state in Virginia in the Union, his enemies plot to take force, starting a murderous war. However while all this is happening there is also a romantic plot. Evelyn the leading lady finds herself mingling with the Richmond upper class. Along the way she finds herself in a difficult situation, does she use her beauty for the greater good but put her relationship with Nate in jeopardy.
This was well written and enjoyable but to get a better experience and be fully immersed in this series, you need to read the previous two books.
In 1861 Nathan Chambers, former army captain, is embroiled in a whirl of politics regarding the secession. Abraham Lincoln has just won the election and Virginia is poised to abandon the Union in revolt. Nathan fights against this while his Evelyn is recruited into the Underground Railroad and coerced to work as a spy. This book is the third in the series, continuing where the previous one left off and our characters continue to find their place in the tumultuous new world, that they live in. Set during the Civil War era, I found this book to be very well written and the characters well drawn out. Even jumping into the middle of the series as I did, I was able to follow the plot with little difficulty and I found that Evelyn’s courage and even her conflicts resonated deeply with me. I am looking forward to picking up the next book in the series. Well Done!
This third instalment in the fascinating series “Road to the Breaking” captivated me even more than the previous ones. What I loved from this book is the fact that it combines political and social history and romance. It develops and describes perfectly those times when politics played a central role in daily life. With this story, I learned about some historical facts that were unknown for me and about others that I thought were false, and were confirmed and explained by the author. Apart from being a source of entertainment, this work is also a source of knowledge. I discovered a lot of interesting information that is related to the protagonists’ story. I recommend Reading this series of books. I did it and I don't regret.
What struck me most about Sedition is how it portrays the American Civil War not just as a North vs. South conflict, but as something far more fragmented and personal. Nathan Chambers embodies the Unionist struggle within Virginia torn, pressured, betrayed. Evelyn, though, gave the story its heartbeat. Her evolution from rescuer of a runaway slave to Union spy was intense, and I loved the way Bennett described the weight of her choices. She wasn’t a superhero; she was a woman making impossible decisions in an impossible time. The conspiracies, the backroom deals, the plots to assassinate rivals, it all read like a historical thriller. I found myself thinking about modern politics while reading, which shows how relevant the themes remain.
“Sedition” is the third book of the saga “Road to the Breaking”. In this reader, fiction mixes with reality as both real life characters and fictitious events mingle.
The plot is entertaining: slaves and a high society, peace and war; and political and social issues are constantly portrayed, making the story run smoothly and keeping me on the alert.
Long books are not of my preference, but I can easily give this saga a special place in my virtual shelf because it surely deserves it. Why? The plot, the characters, the descriptions and the vocabulary make this piece unique.
I cannot wait to read the following book of the series!
Civil war is erupting and Virginia is right in the middle
This historical fiction tells the story of Virginia and the battle brewing in the country. This is book three where we follow Nathan Chambers and his quest to keep Virginia in the union while the split is already forming. At the same time his love, Evelyn is being recruited to gather secrets from the confederacy by using her seductive charms. Will the relationship survive? Will Nathan keep Virginia with the confederacy? Follow the journey as the story unfolds before your eyes. The characters are well developed and the scenes are descriptive and make you feel like you are right there.
The cover immediately caught my eye, and after reading the description, I was eager to read Sedition by Chris Bennett, which is the third book to the Road to the Breaking series. I really liked that it is set in the past, specifically the year 1861, and the setting is so well developed and described that the author really made me think I was in those times. The narrative style is very good and got me engaged from beginning to end. Due to its content, such as violence, I recommend this read to adults, especially those like me who enjoy novels set in the past.
This book as with all I have read in the series is wonderful from so many perspectives. The principles and characteristics of the people are real and reflect a wholesome spiritual view of the circumstances and situations they encounter and positive, caring responses even toward their enemies. Life lessons on a higher spiritual consciousness. Thank you. Please write more of the same.
Secession is on the horizon. Virginia's Governor does not want Virginia to secede from the Union. Nathan, along with Tom and William, go to Richmond to work against secession. Meanwhile, Evelyn becomes involved with the underground railroad. This series keeps getting better and better. Fast paced and hard to set aside. Excellent historical fiction.
I give a lot of books a five star rating if I enjoy them, but this series needs at least a ten! Brilliant writing and detail as well as a great storyline! This one was awesome, I loved the the pack horse and mule part which I actually got to use once with my grandfather many years ago!
Sorry,I skipped a review on book 2 because I wanted to start reading Sedition right away. I have now read both. They have both left me wanting to start the next one. Great reading. Hope all other readers will find them just as enjoyable
Wonderful continuation of a Civil War saga. Great read with enjoyable story line filled with interesting characters and scenes that tell of the beautiful city of Richmond before the war.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This story has me immersed in a time when our country was being torn apart. There are many parallels to what is happening in America today.
Mr Bennett has done an amazing job developing the different characters intertwining them with actual people and events. In reality looking forward to jumping into book four
I was born and raised in rural Kansas and have lived n several southern states. In so doing, I heard many different stories about slavery and pre-Civil War times. I thus read the first two books and about a quarter of the third. I quit as the novel and series did not seem to have much depth.
