Love Lessons

Rate this book
Love Lessons is a classic enemies-to-lovers YA romance set against the backdrop of the intense college admissions process.

For as long as she can remember, Sara Brooks has dreamed of going to Harvard. Every single choice she's made in life has led her to her picture-perfect early application. So when she gets an email saying she's been deferred to the regular admission pool, she is devastated. It's when Sara visits her guidance counselor that she learns the truth: While she always assumed she was first in her class, she's actually third. And what's worse, she's been knocked off the top spot by Charles Chase, an entitled, preppy doucher who's got all the advantages in the world. In that moment, Sara realizes that if she wants to get into Harvard, she has to take Charles down and become valedictorian.

Enter Ethan Perry, Sara's academic nemesis, who she's spent the last four years competing with for every grade and project, and who's currently in the number two spot. When Ethan is also deferred at Yale, Sara and Ethan realize that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", and vow to work together to take out Charles. From there, valedictorian is anyone's game. It's the perfect plan - until Sara's rivalry with Ethan starts to turn into something more....

I’m pretty sure the main character is a sociopath. She literally has no empathy for any other humans.

3.5 stars. I loved this storyline, but I had a really hard time rooting for the main character because she was so judgmental, selfish, and a shitty friend. I hated how she looked down on and referred to her classmates as "peasants" and "commoners" and was cruel toward her sweet parents. Everything Sara did was aimed with the sole purpose of improving her application to Harvard. (By the way, who applies to Harvard without a single safety school?!) She railed against white male privilege, not realizing or acknowledging her own white privilege when her academic rival (based on the book cover, anyway) is black. It was disappointing not to see the racial dynamic addressed at all, and then for this white girl to have everything perfectly fall into place without any true consequences to some of her truly awful actions. Ethan deserves better. This book is basically a YA romance featuring Paris Gellar from Gilmore Girls (Season 1) as the lead.

Part of me also wonders whether this book was originally written in third person and then changed to first person POV because there are certain phrases that came across a bit odd, such as "I turn my perky nose upward."

The ending felt a bit anticlimatic and hollow

Audible has been producing some very high quality Audible Originals lately, even though I'm not too thrilled about how they don't allow libraries to purchase them. This audiobook includes sound effects and some Beethoven music throughout the story. I'm not sure if allowing authors to narrate their own books is the best idea, though, unless the author is, say, Barack Obama, because I think a professional narrator would've done a better job.

I'm a huge fan of books featuring academic rivals that need to team up and then fall in love along the way. I would highly recommend Today Tonight Tomorrow for anyone else who likes this type of storyline, as it is similar to this book but does it much better.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

Sarah Brooks is an overachieving senior on a mission. When she joins forces with her nemesis, sparks fly and she softens. The banter is exquisite. The chemistry bubbling.

This was my first audiobook ever and I fell in love. This is a whole new level of reading/book love. Having the dulcet sounds of the author's voice in my ears made this book come alive in a way I didn't know was possible. I could feel, see and hear the characters' voices. It was like watching it play out before my eyes (even though, yes, technically it was ears, but no matter). It added colour to a book that I didn't know I was missing. Ms. Christie's writing was so sublime, I kept doing 15 second roll backs just to hear her words a second, third and fourth time. Absolutely masterful. She is one to watch!! I can't wait for her next book.

This book has ruined me for all other audiobooks. A must listen.

This was a delightful listen, start to finish, enhanced by Ms. Christie's expert narration. I found myself smiling so hard my cheeks hurt and snort-laughing when her vivid descriptions were so spot-on to reality. If you love a good enemies to lovers romance sprinkled with erudite AP class wit and a very likeable "unlikable protagonist" this story is for you. If your parents have ever clapped when the waiter delivered unlimited breadsticks at Olive Garden, bought a golf shirt at Costco, or played in a Monopoly tournament, buy this book immediately.
