When a human changeling uncovers the truth of his dark past, he’ll risk everything to track down his real family… cutting a swathe of magical destruction through all who stand in his way!
The name’s Crowley, but the Fae know me as Fuamnach’s Hound. She’s the Tuath Dé sorceress who abducted me as a child, making me her slave in Underhill.
For decades I languished under her thumb, suffering torturous abuse while she molded me into her own personal magical assassin and saboteur. After years of slavery, I finally broke free, earning her ire and the attention of her death squads.
Now, I'm searching for my human family and the doppelgänger who stole my identity. I intend to gain back what was lost by killing the faery who is living the life I was meant to have.
All I have to do is evade an army of deadly fae assassins, dig up my hidden past, and locate an imposter who's hiding among the eight billion humans living on the planet.
Perhaps this would be a daunting task for the average human, but I’m neither average nor entirely human.
My name is Crowley, and I swear to take back what's mine—even if I have to climb a mountain of fae corpses to do it.
Shade Hunted is the second novel in The Shadow Changeling Series, a Colin McCool Junkyard Druid spin-off series set in M.D. Massey's Druidverse urban fantasy setting.
M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.
As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.
Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.
I decided to rewrite my reviews to improve clarity. I suggest reading the other reviews but a (rogue, no doubt) Goodreads tech has blocked my seeing them. 🤔 My commenter ID's have also all been masked by a (rogue, no doubt) Goodreads tech. 🤔
I have finally closed my pages to comments and removed all lurkers but one. Goodreads will not allow me to remove a Dr Susan Hamilton (Maths professor at University of Tennessee ?). 🤔 She has posted nothing over more two years since her friend request. She also has not responded to four requests that she unfriend me. 🤔 She must find me a fascinating fellow but I really am just not that interesting. 🙂
My complaints and queries were all forwarded to a (rogue, no doubt) Goodreads tech who has not responded once over three years. 🤔
It reminds me of an old folk saying "You write a scathing negative review of a 'sorry salute to a January 6, 2021 hero', and suddenly a (rogue, no doubt) Goodreads tech can decide that a member being a communist is a bad thing". Quelle surprise. 🤗
For more Goodreads, see my review of "The Last Stand of Mary Good Crow", a really good novel by Rachel Aaron or Powers of the Earth (a sorry salute to the January 6, 2021 hero) and the comments from a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi and US patriot).
To Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 Don't be a numpty. Be a smarty. Come and join the Communist Party.
These patriots from Russia and the US both agree that Putin and Russia must be allowed to destroy Ukrainian identity and that Russia launching nuclear weapons against the US is perfectly reasonable. Tucker Carlson, Claes Rees Jr and the US Republican Party, despite the many bars of Russian gold make no sense to me. In any case. 😐
Today Kherson. Tomorrow Crimea. GLORY TO UKRAINE !!!
This is book 21of the Druidverse, I think. If you've read any of the other books, you are expecting a great novel with good character definition and an interesting plot. You will get that and more. The writer just doesn't have it in him to not write a good book.
That will explain why no review is particularly long. They are going to be repeats of praise for the continued quality of the writing and awesome storytelling. It still needs to be said but short of a book synopsis, it is difficult to find new superlatives.
Crowley is both important to the series and mysterious in his background. This book begins to show his history, his enemies and his motivations for helping the Druid in several key battles. His appearance at key moments and his motivation for intervening were always a mystery but with this book, it becomes both clearer and more complex.
It is nice to get this long awaited insight into what is a major character. It also shows the parallel between the life stories of Crowley and Colin. I doubt that I am alone in wanting to know more about this character and grateful for books about his past.
Between new series installments, I look at older urban fantasy and both Butcher's "Dresden" and Rachel Aaron's "DFZ/Heartstriker" universes. These three are for me at present, the top three urban fantasies. I may be able to add more to their number but I can not imagine any being displaced.
This book works fine as a standalone but starting at book one will make a big difference. It's a good series with strong characters and a very solid background universe. World building can be taken for granted but after seeing it done well, it is hard for me to accept Low Effort alternatives. The characters are engaging and it is hard not to embrace their pain at their losses, the dread that permeates much of the series or their relief if not joy in their too few victories. I probably have given away that I am a fan. Please read other reviews, so that I will not feel quite so embarrassed in my gushing.
If all my fantasy or science fiction reading was close to the quality of this series, I would not have begun to lose interest in both. I will eagerly read the better writers still but the bulk of Amazon's catalogue seems to consist of low end fiction. It tends to separate out into the Low Effort, Minimal Effort, or No Effort schools.
The low end fantasy books are only usually bad romance books or teen male heroic tales. Neither are bad as forbidden pleasures but not very satisfying in the light of day. The low end US science fiction runs to a retelling of the glories of US hegemony in outer space. Unfortunately those who benefit from that narrative do not read these books. The audience for them tends to the more violent patriots (lost fellows with my own working class roots), who suffer no cognitive dissonance resulting from contradictions between their rhetoric and their invariably heinous actions.
Weirdly, for the most part with the exception of No Effort fantasy, the print stories are often better or at least more entertaining than much of video. Rather than read current low end print science fiction though, I watch my science fiction. The streaming services seem to all offer some science fiction, most of which are better written and almost all of which is more entertaining. Netflix, in addition to library size, includes many multinational productions as a bonus.
I started searching YouTube for science fiction news and commentary more than 2 years ago. I found science fiction channels quickly but discovered all manner of other interest area channels. Eventually I stumbled upon the book channels and it was an eye opening experience. The variety of channels is very broad and covers every aspect of the book lover's interests. There are book hauls, second hand book shopping trips, book finds, library redecorating, reading challenges, and more. The reader communities are varied as are their focus but all are thoughtful, curious and above all excited by the entirety of the bookish experience. It is the antithesis of whatever Goodreads have become. I recommend a visit to several book channels for any reader and have listed some below.
YouTube host essayist channels, which are awesome and documentary channels which were very useful, especially for the introduction to and an overview of areas and topics with which I was unfamiliar. Through those channels, I was introduced to the growing number of educational video sites via advertisements. I began my exploration with Curiosity Stream/Nebula at a cost of about $15 USD for a yearly subscription. It was a very good investment and I think that all of the documentary sites are worth a look.
As for Goodreads, please remember that this is Amazon, which has a well deserved evil reputation.
Please protect yourself. There are really bad groups including staff, willing and able to harm someone with whom they disagree up to and including illegal action. They often but not exclusively refer to themselves as US patriots.
I suggest that you treat this site as potentially hostile, just to be safe. 😐 Minimize information on your profile, beware of messaging (exchange emails instead) and remove lurkers (who are not just voyeurs but with the help of staff can be dangerous). Ominous music ends but seriously please be wary. 😊

ok 5 stars.... i really like the characters. its not a hero, just a main character. think spock with a really immoral view on life... and then he falls in love
Crowley continues on his road to finding out about his past and getting revenge for what has been done to him.
The story directly builds on from Book 1, and to a lesser extent from the Junkyard Druid series. The story is well paced but perhaps a little short. The upside of this is that the author has a nice cadence of releases and so you're never having to wait too long for the next book.
The author continues to work to his usual standard. If you're already a fan you won't be disappointed. If you're new to the author it's definitely worth a read but start from Book 1 of Crowley's story (I'd recommend that you read all of Junkyard Druid but it's not an absolute necessity).
Great fun from a character that i have wanted to know more about from the beginning. Here we have a character that everything was black and white now you get to see what happens when he starts to see color. And yet finds somethings are just better black and white. new magic, more world building, more growth and view points of supporting characters and more supporting characters.
has Crowley power and connections grow so do the dangers he faces. his confidence is great but at the end of the day he is only mortal. I do not think he really understands that..yet :) like Batman he is riding the edge.
Is Crowley about to become a real boy? Crowley in this volume continues his investigation into what happened to his birth family when he was taken by Fuamnach and replaced by a changeling. Crowley and Belladonna go to a small town outside Austin when the clues lead him there following up on his family history. Crowley was wiped clean of feelings and emotions for the most part when he was captive in Underhill. But as he finds out more about his family he finds he's not as cold blooded as he thought
Crowley is on quest to find his family of origin, and revenge for their fate.
Lots of character development in this story, Crowley is slowly regaining his humanity with help from Belladonna, and, all in all, becoming a likeable character.
The storytelling is fast, compelling and immersive. Beautifully detailed fight scenes alongside bright and intelligent dialogue.
We find a new side to the evil wizard we were introduced to in the Junkyard Druid series. Crowley became the "bad boy" we hated to love in Shade Cursed. Shade Hunted is Crowley's continuing quest to discover his roots. The revelations of his past not only give him his answers, but also emotions he had not believed he was capable of feeling. It is an exciting, shocking, emotional roller coaster ride.
Crowley really has a lot on his hands in this one! He finds where his family was from but has to get to the bottom of the mystery of his family while fighting fae and vampires alike. Some great use of creative language! Great story telling, sad story line for Crowley. Looking forward to where he's next headed!
Great look into Crowley’s motivations and past. He’s been bombarded by feelings and Belladonna is by his side to kick some ass and help him explore said feelings. When or if he’s ever ready Crowley could resume his original name. I really enjoyed the thrill ride the book took us on but I really loved the Bonus Chapters with Richard, Theo and Gaz. Looking forward to the next book.
Understanding humans was harder than Crowley thought. His past something he did not care about suddenly becomes important for him to know and understand. The love of his life Belladonna whole had shunned to keep her safe wants him to go into business with her. Could life be more complicated? I
This was an excellent follow up to the first. Crowley is becoming an “anti-hero” that you like and relate to. Lots of stuff explained in this book, why Crowley is the way he is. Very nicely done. Can’t wait for the next. Also, as a bonus, a little short story at the end that explains a little more.
Great backstory on Crowley as we finally learn who he really is(was)before Fuamnach stole him away. This is a great read of you've been intrigued by Crowley the Junkyard Druid series. It sheds new light and redefines his character in unexpected ways. A delight to read.
Enjoy reading about Crowley and getting his back story away from "Junkyard Druid". Keeping him chaotic neutral in alignment is interesting and I can't wait to see where he winds up after Belladonna gets done with him. Fun read! Mind you, I read to be entertained, and not to pick a story apart. There's not a lot to pick apart here though. It's a solid story...
Loved it , always had a soft spot for Crowley in the Colin McCool series , loved the 2 so far & I'm really becoming attached to the new & improved Crowley ..more please .
WD Massey has created an interesting universe with The Druid series. His filling in of the other characters has been very enjoyable to read. I will be waiting for the next books in this series!
Crowley backstory is very comp!ex but he learns the truth and gets his memory back as well as a fortune in m o st and land. The hardest part was Laarni g to deal with his past and getting his humanity back. Can't wait for the next book.
The characters are very good! Story line is also good It will be interesting to see how the story develops. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.I am not good with words but I love a good story.
This book really sold me on Crowley as a character. Under his rough, uptight exterior is a true heart of gold. His story is gripping and compelling and it was a pleasure to watch him grow. I can’t wait to see how this all leads up to the conclusion of his trilogy.
First M.D Massey copy Kevin Hearne Iron druid Universe. mix a bit whit WoW and Supernatural now you got this book. i Guest you just sell it better . but im a fantasy junkie soo ofc. i have to read it
This was a great read. I love the filling out of the character Crowley from the Junkyard Druids series he's an interesting fellow with a lot of substance, and I can't wait for the next book
Crowley is a weird and wonderful combination- love his turn of phrase, love his moral stance. His character is much more fascinating than I was expecting. Great book.
Loved it. From beginning to end. Learned more of Crowley’s history. No spoilers meant, but when you read this book, you get to watch Crowley grow as a character.
