Zodiac Goings is a charismatic hustler with layers beyond what he allows anyone to see. Raised by sisters who’d do anything to see him win; he doesn’t let his shortcomings define him. Fear doesn’t exist in his vocabulary... except when it involves Reason. Reason Atkins is in love. She knows Zodiac is the bad boy that parents warn girls like her about, but she doesn’t care. She sees the potential. Reason loves Zodi in a way that can push him into greatness... or out of her life if he can’t withstand the pressure. Every young love has five stages of growth. This is theirs.
4.5 ⭐️ Wow, the romance between Zodiac and Reason was riveting. My mind forgot that Zodi and Reason were kids because he was so grown up for his age. They had a well-established love story. The two of them worked well together, and they were both doing their best under their given circumstances. The supporting characters were interesting. It was great to see how Zodiac's character evolved; it was so genuine. Like a movie, the writing was simple to follow. When compared to Zodiac, Reason still has some room to grow. Her response upon their reunion was quite immature, but I understand why—that was her first love. I adored Zodiac and his ever-increasing faith in their love.
"Be My Reason." Lawd Zodi had me and Reason mesmerized, he was too young to have all that swag.
Zodi knew that he was forever changed after meeting Reason in a neighborhood he had no business being in. Zodi had the world on his shoulders and he was trying to make a way and had no idea he had met his future after just trying to secure something for his family in the present. Reason aka Strawberry was everything! She had a beautiful spirit, she was fiesty, smart, and what I loved most is she understood her worth ...young. Even though Reason was head over heels in love with Zodi she made sure he respected her and she did not in anyway put up with his bs. Zodi knew he had to come correct with her. They say, "if you love someone, set them free; if they come back to you, it was meant to be." That was literally their story.... Zodi wanted to become the man that he felt Reason deserved, and he knew he couldn't do that and keep her. He was so mature to be so young and he made some decisions that broke both of their hearts. This author used every page of this story the right way and allow us to grow with these characters and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I loved the side characters as well. She gave us just enough to enhance the story without overpowering it. In fact their presence helped shape the main characters. I know a story is about to be good when I feel the love jump off the page and I can relate to the characters. Enjoyed this so much.
Ok so Antionette Sherell has skyrocketed to one of the top spots of my favorite authors list . She knows how to write a d@mn book while pulling every emotion from you! Geez!!!! She does not play fair. I cannot wait to dive into the rest of her catalog! Zodi and Reason were a young love at 15 that blossomed into a forever love. Man Zodi took me through it! He had the weight of the world on his poor shoulders but one thing that you never questioned was his love for Reason! The character development was everything and I loved them all! This book was beyond what I could have imagined! The story flowed beautifully and was just so natural. I found myself easily watching the scenes play out as if I was there in the physical. Bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This journey through Zodi & Reason’s love story gave me ALL THE FEELS. I loved that we went through every stage with them. The character development was so good! How was Zodi so mature at such a young age?! He was a product of his environment - doing what he had to survive with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Reason was the good girl that gave him the push to believe in himself. These two were just so good together and I really commend Zodi for making the tough calls so he could be his best self for her. He was just such an amazing young man and I love that Reason’s mom saw that in him right away and cheered him on. His graduation cap next to Reason’s? Ughhh so sweet!
The supporting characters were just as amazing. Shan and Nice really won me over. Nice said what he said! He kept his word and I loved that for Shan.
I just absolutely loved this book and I can see myself reading it again!
My goodness, this story was packed. When I say well-developed, this is what I mean. The entire time, I felt like I was there. Somewhere in the shadows, watching as everything unfold. I was there, I was part of the crew. That's what the author did. She was so descriptive and so vivid you couldn't help but feel like you were part of everything and that these people were your friends. Well done👏🏾 👏🏾
I loved Zodiac. I hated that I loved him so much. He was on a self-destruction path and was not even aware. He thought he was untouchable and for the most part, he was. But sometimes, life just be lifing. He formed this unbreakable bond with Reason that just has your heart fluttering. The way the author worked them together from start to finish was immaculate. Reason was delicate, innocent, and just the most loving and loyal person. Get you someone like Reason on your side and you'll be good. This story was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I don't have enough words to express how wonderful it was. I was utterly sad when the story ended cause when I tell you, I felt like these people were my friends. Usually, long stories kinda discourage me. But this one? While it was still long, I was hoping for more chapters. If you are looking for a well-developed story that feels absolutely real, like real life real, with characters that will melt and pull at your heart, get into this now. If it wasn't clear, I LOVED EVERY SINGLE PAGE. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and there were plenty of each. This about to get personal, but y'all, get you a book friend like mine who recommends THE MOST amazing books. Thank you, friend (you know who you are). I appreciate you. This was was sooo soo good and I greatly enjoyed it. 10/5⭐️
My GAWDT! 🔥🔥 I tried so hard to take my time with this story, I knew it was going to be good from the first chapter but dayummm, it was amazing! The storyline, character growth and development, and gosh everything! Zodiac, that young buck, he was pure and just wanted to take care of the people around him. Unfortunately, that required him becoming a product of his environment. But oh, how I love a good redemption storyline! Sweet Reason, she only wanted the absolute best for her Zodi, Reason was as innocent as they come but she wasn’t a fool. The love between them was something special and I swear I thought I was about to DNF my first book ever at 97%!!! Nice and Shan’s relationship was a great touch to the story, ride or dies forever! I felt so emotional about Hassan, gosh he deserved better than what he thought he did – if you have ever seen The Wire, I swear he reminded of Duquan “Dukie”. Reason’s mama, Ava, I loved her relationship with Zodi! I could literally go on and on, but I won’t! I was cheesing so hard at the end! 10/10
Zodi & Reason was an amazing story. Zodi dealt with so much while making sure all those who he loved was okay. Lyrica leaving was trifling as fck especially knowing they were already struggling. Poor Dani she didn’t deserve that; Bulls death was well deserved. Hasaan 🥹🥹🥹🥹…he didn’t deserve that. Shan & Yonis getting married was too cute. It was nice seeing Zodi get it together after everything he been through. I loved this book. Thank you Rashawnda for recommending another great book 🥰🥰
I absolutely loved this story! I find it hard to put into words how well written this story was. “Love Bred From the Block” was a beautiful coming of age story of two young people from different walks of life that developed such an admirable relationship.
Like so many young black boys, Zodiac had to grow up way before his time in order to help provide for himself and his older sisters in the absence of both parents. While Reason has both parents present and lived a life where she didn’t have to wonder where her next meal will come from.
Zodiac was the true definition of don’t judge a book by its cover. Yes he was a hustler, but given his situation, he had no choice. He was extremely smart and extremely loyal to those that he cared about. He was much more mature beyond his years. The love and devotion he gave Reason had my grown self swooning. Every time Zodiac said “Be My Reason” I melted! His loyalty to his friends and sisters, even when their loyalty to him was questionable, was unwavering.
Reason was this young smart sheltered good girl, but baby girl was loyal and it caught me by surprise at how tough she was. The way she spoke life into Zodiac and was his safe haven was beautiful!
While I absolutely loved this story, two things did bother me a bit. When I read the synopsis for this story I was not expecting for Zodiac and Reason to remain as children (Ages 14-17/18) for 90% of the book. I think it would have been a great idea to let readers know ahead of time, because many adult readers aren’t fond of reading stories with children as main characters. This story was primarily set in the mind to late 90s. It kind of lacked a concept of time. I would have loved to experience nostalgia with the 90s culture through descriptions of fashion and language. We got bit and pieces from music mentioned periodically.
Other than that, the story was everything! I grew to love Zodiac and Reason and their friends. I experienced a range of emotions with these characters as they progressed through life. My heart went out to these young people.
It broke my heart to see them experiencing love, loss, betrayal, and responsibility of this magnitude! This story was so raw and real. You really become engrossed in these characters and their lives!
Overall amazing storyline! Amazing writing! This is an example of character development vs plot development. Antoinette Sherell provided us superb character development! I highly recommend you guys check this out!
I love a good coming to age story and A Love Bred From The Block was just what I needed!! Zodiac and Reason are my babies! I love their story and could not get enough of them!! Their growth, struggles, and friendship was heartwarming and when they were at odds it hurt me. They weren’t perfect but they were perfect for each other. The author really painted a full picture of young love and what it looks like when the good girl falls for the bad boy. Only, Zodiac wasn’t really a bad boy- he was just trying to survive and help his family. Zodi is literally the example of what loyalty is. He went to war behind his family and friends and would tell them they were wrong afterwards. And every time he said, “Be My Reason” my heart was about to burst out my chest. Ughhh!! I love a character that doesn’t mind showing his emotions and vulnerabilities. The characters really hold a special place In my book world. I loved everything!!! AMA-ZING JOB! ❤️
My first time reading a book by Miss Antoinette and she did not disappoint. Zodiac and Reason were meant to be together. I loved them so much! From the way they met to the rekindling of their relationship. Ugh. Obsessed
Forever my Reason!!! Love, love, loved this book. Zodi is definitely book bae. I enjoyed the characters growth from all characters from beginning to end. It’s been a long time since I actually liked all the characters (main and supporting) in a long time. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
I love every bit of this story! Zo did not play about Reason. Ms. Sherell is in my top 3 favs because every book gets better and better. She took me back to the 90’s with this one. I cried laughed and almost had a heart attack but it was worth it in the end. This book is forever etched in my heart. You just have to read it guys!
I loved this book, Antoinette never disappoints. The way Zodi & Reason loved each other was everything. This is a must read, you'll be entertained from beginning to end.
Whew… this book right here? I loved it. A Love Bred From the Block gave me all the feels. Zodi and Reason had me deep in my first love memories, back when it was all butterflies, late-night phone calls, and that “I can’t breathe without you” kinda feeling. This was a coming-of-age story, and it made me feel like I was falling in love for the very first time all over again.
From the minute Zodiac Goings laid eyes on Reason Atkins, it was over for him. And let’s be real—Reason was just as gone. It was love at first sight, 15 years old and already locked in. They come from two completely different worlds. Zodi’s carrying the weight of the entire block, abandoned by his mama, raised by his sisters Tempest and Lyrica, and trying to hold it down not just for his family but for his friends too.
Young love is hard as is—but love with that kind of pressure on your back? Whew. But what I loved most is that Zodi still made space for Reason. He did what he could, and even when he had to make the hardest decision of his life, you could feel that it came from a place of pure love. He was trying to protect her, even if it meant breaking both their hearts.
This whole book was a 10/10 for me. The character development? Beautiful. The plot? Seamless. The writing? Antoinette’s pen is crazy—I swear she don’t miss. She’s easily becoming one of my top five authors.
And can we talk about the side characters?? Because I was just as obsessed with Shan and Nice as I was with Zodi and Reason. The way that man loved Shan?! Too cute. That graduation scene had me full-on emotional. A man of his word! 👏🏾
And then there’s Tempest and Lyrica—listen, my heart broke for both of them. Tempest raised her siblings the best way she knew how, and she prepared Zodi for the life she assumed he had no choice but to live. Meanwhile, Lyrica saw something different in him and tried to push him in another direction. I was disappointed in Lyrica’s decision to leave, but I got it. Watching someone you love choose the hard road? That hurts.
Now let me get into my favorite moments real quick: 1. When Zodi met Ava for the first time? Whew, that was special. Their bond was so sweet and exactly what he needed. 2. Keva’s party?! My girl Reason was in her bag and Zodi was STUCK. Loved that scene! 3. Reason’s relationship with her dad was everything 🫶🏾. We love positive Black fatherhood! 4. And Keva telling Reason to go beat Alexis’ ass?? Because YES. She had it coming and I was clapping.
Honestly, this book was perfect. If you’re looking for a coming-of-age story that gives you all the feels without feeling immature, this is it. It’s soft. It’s real. It’s Black love, Black family, and Black legacy all wrapped up in one beautiful story.
Five stars. Zero skips. I already want to reread it.
Book: A Love Bred From The Block Author: Antoinette Sherell Genre: Romance Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🥵🥵

I’ve yet to read a book by this author that I didn’t like. She’s very detailed orientated and dedicated to putting out her best. Of all the books I’ve read I think this one may be my favorite. I love coming to age stories and the amount of character development in this book was everything I didn’t know I needed. That young love hits different. This book pulled me right in but it also had me reminiscing on my past as a young teen in love. While I loved the Relationship between the friends and Reason and Zodi, the relationship between Ms. Ava and Zodi really touched me. She did everything she could to protect her daughter but I loved the fact that she yet saw potential in Zodi. She didn’t write him of like a lot of other adults. I loved the authenticity of the storyline because your teenage years are when you first start learning about the depths of friendship. When you find out that people don’t always love you back the same and some even carry jealousy in their hearts. I’m still waiting on Quran to be free but now it’s #FreeHer 👀👀👀 Sometimes life can deal you a bad hand especially if your parents aren’t active or there for you the way you need them. Really good book
This book was fantastic! When I can read a book, and it plays out like I'm watching a movie. That means that's a great book. This is the type of book that I will read again. The characters, though. I loved them. I don't want to give spoilers. Just read this book 10 out of 10!!
Ya’ll weren’t lying when y’all said this book is one your favs! I loved it as well omgggg Zodi & Reason 🥰 a great friends to lovers coming of age story. On to read Forever His Reason . Can’t get enough of these 2 🫶🏽
Now im going to give this book 5 stars because it was so damn good but listen it was entirely too damn long. 🤣 Also, they didn’t hunch til like 70% into the book but I had to tell myself they are kids and the author took FRIENDS TO LOVERS LITERAL 😭 like we actually saw them be friends.
This was an unforgettable journey through young love, growth, and resilience. Zodi and Reason’s story took me on a rollercoaster of emotions in the best way possible. Their love felt real and earned—developed through shared moments, challenges, and unwavering loyalty.
Their journey from friends to forever was beautifully written—full of heart, growth, and real-life struggles. Zodi’s maturity and love for Reason were everything, and Reason’s loyalty and strength made her unforgettable. The character development was top-tier, and the supporting cast added so much depth. Antoinette Sherell truly knows how to tell a story that sticks with you. I’m obsessed!
Antoinette Sherell has officially earned her place on my favorite authors list. Her storytelling is vivid, emotional, and natural—like watching a movie unfold. I’m already looking forward to diving into more of her work. This book was everything I didn’t know I needed and more.
After a recommendation from a fellow avid reader I decided to give this New To Me Author (NTMA) and I am so glad I did. The age of the protagonists did not deter me from diving into this engaging storyline and insightful read. This book placed me on the entire emotional spectrum. My heart ached for the abuse Dani endured under the supervision of her mother as well as the downward spiral of Hasaan whose mother failed to be there for him. The thing that made Zodiac distinct was that while his situation was not always ideal, the love of his sisters opened up to the possibility of love with Reason. I won't say much else except my recommendation is for readers to get this book. It is worth the read, quite a literary experience.
Where do I begin? I have been through it with this read. Like truly fretting over these fictional characters. But like Reason, I worried for Zodi and Nice. Heck all of ‘em… secondary characters included. Keva, Wilt, Ava—- er’body.
I loved the “stages”, not only did it highlight the evolution of their love and relationship. But the pacing of their development as individuals.
I could relate to Reason. And yet she had moments when she was pushing too hard that was annoying. But I got it. She loved that man deeply.
But Zo and Reason weren’t the only love story. And for that, I was so happy. Because I quickly fell in love with Yonis and wanted more of him and Shan. And Antoinette delivered.
This author… her storytelling abilities are superb. I’m a huge fan of her work. This is a favorite for sure!!
If I wasn't stubborn and stuck on maintaining my thuggish reputation, I would've cried. This story is so beautiful. I am very likely biased because I love a friends to lovers/crush story and this gave me both. I am happy I saved this because to know this was an earlier work of Antoinette's tells me she has always been talented. I love how wonderfully she crafted Zodiac and Reason's love story. The book being set in the 90s added the perfect touch of nostalgia because it truly read like every love song we sang as young girls. There is a perfect level of angst and love. I love how delicately she crafted each character and the growth she allowed each of them to have.
This book was just everything. It really showcased the author’s growth as a writer. Reason and Zodi were just everything... from their very first encounter. The pace of the story was perfect, the character development, all flawless. I also loved the relationship between Shan and Nice. Nice knew what he wanted and was determined to have her. I also really admired Nice & Zodi’s relationship. This story was so beautifully written and all of the tiny pieces throughout connected so well. Nette did so good with this one and I can’t wait to read what’s next from her.
I ate this book up, I’m not even gonna lie. I enjoyed Zodiac and Reason story from beginning to end. Zodiac was so protective and loyal to everyone on his team , that sometimes it was a blessing but also a curse. I love the way things develop between Zodiac and Reason. The way Reason loved him down and her love never let him down to the way he loved her back.
The hidden gem in this book was Ava(Reason’s mom) she saw Zodiac and she didn’t judge him based on his appearance. The relationship that he developed with her was definitely special
Wow, the standards have been set high! This was perfect! Antoinette is a seasoned writer. The characters were amazing, it was well-written and flowed. There were some incredible heartfelt moments. And Zodiac was the most romantic book bae I've read about! This story was nostalgic as it was rooted in the 90s. The classic era! Highly recommend. I don't want to give anything away as it was an incredible story. I do wonder what happened to Blake though?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much. It held my attention from start to finish and I loved seeing how each character grew up!! Zodiac and Reason were everything and I also loved Nice and Shan! A great urban romance standalone and highly recommended!
