Once she was Sofia Valk, living in a village overrun by evil. In time she became Lord Baltimore's most trusted ally. Now, more than a decade after his death, Europe has erupted with the early battles of World War 2 and dark forces are rising again. With witches, vampires, and Nazis on the march, Sofia must embrace the title of Lady Baltimore! But can she fight monsters without becoming a monster herself? Horror genius writing team Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden reunite, with stellar art by Bridgit Connell and colors by Michelle Madsen as they return readers to the world of Baltimore. ''Witches, monsters, magic, and adventure abound in Lady Baltimore, the exciting new series from Dark Horse Comics, rich in story and art that brings it all to life. What's not to like!''–Cat Staggs
Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.
In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.
In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.
Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.
Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.
Lady Baltimore was one of Lord Baltimore's closest allies in his fight against the Red King. Marrying in secret so that she could continue the fight against evil when needed. And as the Third Reich are gaining power in Germany Sophia knows that they are using dark forces to continue their invasion into Europe. She must once again face nightmares in the hope of freeing herself of the cursed life she has inherited.
Plot: I loved Sophia in the last Baltimore volume and I am so happy they are giving her, her own series. I am a but sad, as I felt the last Baltimore was a bit rushed and, if there was scope to continue, I feel like Baltimore could have gone on for longer. However, that said this was a great introductory instalment of Sophia's story. She, like Baltimore, is a gloriously flawed and likeable character, however, unlike Baltimore she is human, which makes her fighting all the braver. The witches are intriguing and badass bad guys and I am really excited to see where this goes. This is great for Baltimore fans, Hellboy fans, horror fans and fans of dark fantasy. Artwork: Like Baltimore the artwork for this is my perfect art style. Beautiful and unique, dark and vivid. I cannot recommend it enough. Rating: 5/5 stars
Lord Baltimore is dead, but his mission continues. His wife, Sofia Valk, has picked up his sword, wielding it against all kinds of monsters as a new darkness rises. She is not alone though. She's surrounded herself with some strong individuals to aid in this quest, but will it be enough to fight back the forces of evil?
Writers Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden present a very different take on the legacy of Baltimore while maintaining the same overall energy. This is not the stoic, lone wolf warrior - Sofia has a team. Sure, they argue here and there, but they are all in this together. It's a unique vibe that works very well.

I'll admit that I don't know anything about the Hellboy universe, so I went into this completely blind. I really only bought the book because I am friends with the artist, which I think she did an awesome job here! I am eager to see more of her work. The story is just beginning, so I don't an opinion on it just yet, as this issue was all about setup for what is coming.
I was expecting a spin off but it is a sequel . After some years have passed .we are following some of the characters. My main issue is that it is not clear yet on what happened between.
