This story needed some time to take off, but once it did, it has so much to offer.
Our main couple started out as fugitives and is forced to form a Black Chapter team as a way to escape being hunted and tried. They are just commoners who can barely fight, with minimal magic, and, in order to stay as a Black Chapter, they have to complete a task each month. We quickly discover that each member of this team has some secrets and mysterious pasts, and along the way, as they power up, more and more of these secrets are revealed.
My mind is blown away by the world that this author has created. The solid magic structure, the various parties involved, the interconnected plots, and the twists. This author truly doesn’t waste any side characters nor quest. Everything is intentional, and interconnected to the later revelations.
We also get a lot of comedy, angst, friendship and found family. I also love the side couple so much. Their character arc is super interesting, the slow burn makes the reward so sweet. Moreover, their (fade to black) smut is much sexier than the main couple.
Now, this was a pleasant surprise. To be honest, I would usually stay away from Chinese novels with Western concepts because of my addiction to wuxia, xianxia, politics, and history. I gave this a chance because I saw someone rave about it in one of the FB book groups I belong to. Plus, my favorite video game genre is JRPG, so I figured that I wouldn't have a hard time diving into its world. Oh, wow. Talk about really good world-building here. You can really vividly imagine everything in great detail. Though the arcs are "monster of the day" thematically, they're written in such a way that makes you feel like you're reading a collection of fairy tales that would leave a philosophical mark at the end of each arc.
The character development is amazing. I especially love how the author writes female characters. Not to mention, the foreshadowing scenes are planted meticulously. Really looking forward to this author's other works.
DNF - at chapter 67 and I hate to say that I lost interest unfortunately.
Oh boy did I try my utmost best to push through on this one. I could not survive past chapter 67.
Couldn’t connect with the characters or story. Also believe western plots written by Chinese authors aren’t as captivating to me - it could be because of my bias towards Xianxia and the strengths that lie in the writing of those - opposed to an almost awkward telling of western fantasy.
